I was reflashing my phone, while in download mode, the power went off, and now my phone won't turn on or anything. I think my phone is bricked.
I bought the phone a week and a half ago. Will AT&T accept my phone for a replacement if I say it just stopped working? I have the $4.99/month Wireless Insurance, but won't they deny it when they find out I've been messing with it? What should I do?
Thanks!
Before you take it back, make sure it isn't bricked. Remove the battery, replace it, hold both the volume buttons, plug in the usb and see if it takes you to download mode

It's bricked. Replaced battery, won't turn on no matter what I do to it.
There's a small scratch on the screen, and the micro USB charging port cover is messed up a bit from something sticky getting in there.
What should I tell AT&T? What's the likeliness of them declining my claim? Can they tell that it's been tampered with even though it's bricked?
Wrong forum. But I would use my insurance instead and tell them it just quit on me...
Try plugging into the computer, remove the battery reinsert the battery. Then hold volume up and power till red text comes on the screen from there switch to holding both volume buttons down and power then when the red text flashes to black release power and continue to hold both volume buttons. That should get you back to the downloading digger bot.

They won't give you a hard time on the software side - to them off is off - they can't tell if you bricked it - they will send it somewhere and have it flashed.
BUT - if there is something sticky in the USB port then they do have grounds to deny your claim - for all they know you poured juice in there.
Good luck.
Get it into download mode and flash it again with odin. Likely not bricked.

The AT&T screen doesn't come up?
Guys we have been told a gazillion times about this...what does this have to do with Development?! Jesus....
Which firmware were you using at the time and which one were you flashing?
also make sure the battery is charged

Nothing does, I tried every combo, SIM card in and out, replacing battery, USB plugged in and out, download mode, regular power button, recovery mode, what the guy suggested above; everything.
Not a single thing shows up on the screen.
You glanced over my question.
The version of firmware you were using before the flash and during the failed flash can be very pertinent to the key combination you need to get into download mode =P

I had the stock firmware, installed the JM5 firmware, reinstalled the JM5 firmware, while doing so, they power went off.
Just pressing Volume Down + Power got me into Download Mode everytime.
Edit: And yes, the battery was charged, it was at about 67% when I was flashing the firmware. How can I charge the battery for the heck of it when the phone is dead? Normally when you plug in the USB cable there's a charging animation on the screen. Nothing comes up at all, can a dead phone charge a battery, or does the software need to send the power to the battery?
Honestly I've had flashes fail at varying points during the flash and I've gotten the black screen before, ALWAYS I've been able to get it to work by following these steps:
Pull out everything, SIM, SD, Battery, USB, EVERYTHING
Close Odin (If it's open)
Reopen Odin
Insert battery, hold vol down (If this doesn't work hold both volume buttons NO POWER)
While holding the button(s) plug in USB
Don't touch the power at any point, if this fails and you want to try the other key combo, start the process over completely.

This man speaks the truth, listen to him.
If your insurance covers damage then destroy the phone and call att and tell them its been destroyed.
if not then it is possible that the power outage could have caused your phone to zap.
Flashing or not if you spilled stuff into the usb port your screwed. Week and a half and you scratched the screen and did that? I have tried to scratch mine with no succes. I say ditch that phone and get a GO phone. And have a mod delete this pointless thread already!!!!
So I was attempting to flash back to stock with Odin (I was using Assonance 5.2). I turned the phone off, then while holding the volume buttons plugged in the USB like normal. Then Odin said added the phone, then I hit start. And it seemed like it was working just fine, then all of a sudden the screen on the phone turned red. Then the status bar on Odin stopped moving completely (stayed for awhile). So I think I made the next big mistake of just disconnecting the USB and taking out the battery. So now the phone won't turn on. So I'm not sure I hard bricked the phone or what? Anyone have any idea? Thanks!
I've plugged the phone into the outlet charger, still nothing happens. This happened like maybe 15 min ago. No action when plugged in the computer or charger. Can't even boot into recovery I don't think. the power button was giving me some trouble earlier today. whenever I was trying to wake the phone up, it seemed to take a few clicks of the power button to wake the phone. This happened only after I flashed Assonance 2.5, so I wanted to flash to an earlier version of the rom. thanks!
What you want to do is get into Download Mode, and flash with Odin One-Click JF6 to get your phone working again..
Have you tried all the various button combos to get into Download Mode? .
If the button combos don't work, you can always try to build/buy a JIG which will force your phone into Download if it's still possible on your phone.
I've tried to get into download mode, but can't seem to do it. I've tried holding the volume up and down button then plugging in the usb (which didn't work). then i tried the taking the battery out, then holding the volume up and down button and power button, then plugging in the usb, then reinserting the battery, then taking my hand off the power button (which didn't work). what is the JIG method?
edit. ok i have no clue wtf just happened, but i am currently in download mode using odin and flashing back to stock.....this is just too weird.....sooo any rom suggestions?

Okay I was using odin one click it was at rebooting device after it completed pushing stock onto the phone thats when I discounted the usb.... should have waited two secs I know but now the phone doesn't seem to get past the att world phone screen keeps looping over and over I have tried all the key combos different times and ways, vol up and down being held doesn't get to download mode the screen remains black plunging in seems to get to charge mode where even plunging into the wall charger it loops trying to calculate the battery status... any method I haven't tried... I did get it to boot once full and was usable didn't think to redo odin at the time and restarted back to this mess...tried three different jigs using the 100k 5% X3 even through its not a full brick due to the button combos gotten no where. Please Help
Search the forum to build a jig in order to get into download mode. Or you may need to buy one just in case in the future.

Try this:
Open Odin and plug your cable into your computer but not your phone yet
Pull battery on phone and put it back in
Hold both volume buttons down and then plug your phone in
It should go into download made and you can reflash the stock ROM
Can anyone please help, i have the exact same problem. No matter how i try to enter download mode, it just gives me a charging sign and when i start my phone, it goes into an infinite boot loop.
Try this:
1. Remove battery from phone, SIM card and MicroSD card (if you have one)
2. Wait AT LEAST 10 seconds with your phone in this state
3. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go
4. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery
If this worked, you should be in Download Mode almost instantly.
There are a lot of key combos for Download Mode, this is just one of them. If all the button combos don't work, you need to build/buy a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode.

Ahah Thats the same exact steps I was able to get the phone to boot that one time instead of the up down I was still attempting it to get past the loop holding the power button instead using those steps, if I had know it would have been one of the only times I would see it in there I would have pushed it to download with adb though...
can't test getting it to download mode now took it back fit the description of the standing on/off issue with the device still honored by warranty. And I wouldn't have posted without searching everywhere to make a jig, I made three of them though I noticed it still didn't get to download mode. I made sure that the last two jigs were done correct. Think that when it was disconnected from odin it wasn't done finalizing after the stock push gah >,< live and learn and do something else to the cappies XD.
Thanks for the link placing an order just in-case ~whistles looking around then side to side pushes another rom~ lalala
To offer my own advice if it ever happens again, what I've been able to do is:
1. Pull the battery out
2. Put it back in
3. Open Odin
4. Hold Both Volume Buttons (without holding the power button)
5. Plug the phone back in
It went immediately into download mode for me, Odin managed to time out several times while I was trying to flash a co-worker's Captivate to the official Froyo leak. One of those times I couldn't even get the phone to come up with any screen. I really do think this thing cannot be bricked.
BeowulfShaeffer said:
That has been my experience so far, too. I've "bricked" twice, once with an "all black" screen, and once with the phone-!-computer screen. I've yet to need a jig, though I thought I may have needed it last night when I got the "all black" screen.
Keep trying the different button press methods to get into download mode. It took me 4 attempts to get from "all black" to "phone-!-computer" to a happy robot digging away.

Ive used odin before changing roms and have gotten to download mode with combos on my last cappy before that night (dramatic music) en ways..
did some more digging on this bad ass info and learning community "XDA" hehe as to how it got the way it did, I found out I was updated with the new patch when I sent it for screen change to this shop, so...using odin one click with this creates a hang time to where it looked like it was finished after pushing jh6 (which was totally off should have used odin 3 and pushed jh2 then clockwork update to jh7) so thats when I disconnected (second noob mistake of the situation) basically blowing the finalization out and key combs for recovery and download mode. and im guessing the jig was made wrong too at this point >,<.

If you cant get your jig to work take it in to warranty (if your water inicators are sound and no physical damage) and say its power cycling on off at random times (which is true.. ) and it did it when you were sync to mini kies, did it an hour after the OP heh good luck

Purchase jig from ebay, or google and try igo jig.
If your phone is turning on with jig you are not touching the right prongs. I know, I know it is not easy, but unless it if touching just right, it can turn your phone on.
Holy ******** i got it to download mode! For some reason i kept touching the same pins and nothing would happen. After about readjusting for about 5mn it finally worked!!!!

That happens try a different usb port or just borrow someone else computer, I used my networking classes computer my laptop was doing the same thing when I was change roms.
Changed the title to fit the issue, this is not a soft brick this is a boot brick that can affect the charge indicator in power off state as well. So whats the difference the soft brick is when you flash a rom incorrectly and you get the att world screen constantly staying on, the key combinations still work when the phone is like this.. in the case with a boot brick the att screen cycles over and over and the jig may or may not work I haven't been able to fully test it here in this state I have seen a packager attempt to finish once on the recent one but all the key combos I could find didn't function my noob guess is the phone forgot how to ride a bike (meaning is hasn't connected keys to recovery that was being flashed or hardware to there states without being booted normally) ultimate fix is if its in warranty (meaning no physical damage or water) take it back for power on off. the soft brick i've seen before and have fixed with odin 2-3 three times, and ive seen a blown kernel type too where keys and odin fix up like new.

Have a link to which one you have? It sounds like the solder points on the jig were a little weak. This can happen if they aren't good welds. If you want give one of mine a shot. I'll refund you if it reboots your phone...
Buy one HERE...
I had a boot brick happen to me just the other day. I was running Andromeda 1.1 with stock kernel & modem, and tried to tinker with swapping the AT&T boot screen using connexion2005's video on the subject (NOT insinuating any blame at all, his videos are fantastic).
I tested it successfully the first time, then flashed back the i9000_param_lfs, and pushed a new image to the device again (everything was exactly the same, with the exception of the boot_screen.bat script not making the phone ask for superuser approval while pushing the new logo_ATNT), and everything looked ok.
Reboot device, and...boink.
Black screen, no image at all on power on, only charging screen when usb cable connected. ADB, nothing. 3 button, nothing. Vol up+down, remove battery, insert usb cable, do hokey pokey, nothing. 5 attempts at the 100k resistor jig, for hours, nothing. No download, no recovery. Seems like the phone was toast.
Strange how I had just done this successfully earlier in the day, to now having it completely hard brick this phone.
I ended up taking the phone back to a local warranty center, and they swapped it (1008) for a 1010 (gps works fantastic on this one, btw)...I just hope there's no bill coming if they find out it was rooted and flashed. *crosses fingers and uses any and all karma*
Any ideas what happened? Did I scramble this things boot loader? I've heard how hard it is to fully brick this phone, and looks like I succeeded. How lucky.
I'd just like to know what went wrong so when I (or anyone else) root and flash next time, the chances of this happening are reduced (or better understood).
Thanks
So the power button on my phone went out, which made getting to download mode and flashing back to stock a lot of fun, let me tell you. I eventually had to buy a JIG.
Anyway, I run ODIN to flash back to stock. It completes and as I'm disconnecting the cable, the battery falls out. (I was able to get into download mode because CM7 auto boots when it had power, something stock does not do.)
So it's flashed back to stock, it didn't have a micro SD card in... but am I right in thinking that the internal cards contents are still there? I.E. My pictures and apps and... the cyanogenmod nightly zip I was using? I can't hit the power button to turn it on so I can't check.
Needless to say, without the power button I can't get my phone back on (Unless a wizard here has an idea?), so my question is... will the files still be there and if they are, how hard does Samsung check these things for voided warranties? Anyone got any experience with their returns? The AT&T store guy says they only reject warranties for water damage, but I didn't exactly volunteer that I had flashed my own rom. If I'm likely to get a $400 hit on my cell bill, I'd rather buy a newer unlocked phone.
TLDR: warranty voiding files might still be on unbooting phone. Will Samsung care?
Do you have an att service center near you? Luckily I did and I just walked in and they checked it a bit (tested it for like 20 minutes). After a quick conversation, the actually just replaced my phone. I told them I wanted a phone with working GPS.
Now if you have to mail it in, that's maybe another story.
It will be mailed.
I assume your jig still gets you into download mode, no? If so, use heimdall/odin to flash something and set it to auto reboot. You could flash something as small as the kernel or maybe just go back to stock once again.
I also want to say that heimdall has an option to try and kick you our of the "phone --!--PC" state and when I tested it while in download mode it just rebooted the phone.
These may be a few ways for you to kick the phone on to let it boot so you can clear the internal SD.
Also, when I take out the battery, insert the USB cable and hold down both volume rockers and put the battery in, I'm kicked into download mode. Perhaps yet another way to turn your phone on?
Use your jig to get into download mode, the use the heimdall one click unbrick in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310
It will reboot your phone from download mode.
I'm certain the JIG would work, if the phone would power on. Without a functional power button (or a rom that auto boots when powered like CM7), I don't think I can get to DL mode.

You don't need use the power button to get into download mode. Just plug the jig in and your in download mode. also if your phone has captivate bootloaders just hold down the volume up/down buttons and plug in usb cable to a pc wait about 3 seconds and you should be in download mode, no need to touch the power button to get into download mode.
Ah, well I get no power up from JIG or USB cable hooked to PC holding vol up, vol down, neither or both. Nothing on the screen at all.

plug your phone into a wall socket to charge the battery and leave it for a while, the come back and check to see if you can feel the battery getting warm. If it does get warm try the jig again. If it doesn't get warm you may have something else wrong then just the power button.
If there is nothing else hardware wise wrong with the phone besides the power button and your boot loaders are not corrupted (and as long as nothing is wrong with your jig) the jig should put you into download mode every time.
charged phone, battery didn't warm, but area just above it did. Tried booting with JIG and USB cable and all combinations of volume buttons, to the same black screen.
Sounds like you should go ahead try with your warranty replacement.
But, if i were you i would try an going to an att store or service center, sometimes there with a hardware defect like your power button they will swap the phone right on the spot quick and easy. if not, the worst they will tell you at the store is to send it in for a warranty replacement, no harm in at least trying.
Yeah, I went to the store and best they did was watch me talk to the warranty people on the phone.
The disconcerting thing with the return is that they send me a phone, then I send them mine and if they have a problem $400 magically appears on my bill and there's nothing I can do about it.
If I can get it warrantied, great. If I can't, I'd rather spend $400 on a newer, better phone (instead of a factory refurbished version of the same phone).
I'm surprised there aren't more people with returns experience here...
I did a return for my wife's captivate at the att store. Her phone had random soft reboots. They did not even look at her phone, and just swapped it out with a new captivate.

My cappy was bricked because Odin failed while flashing the boot-loader.....so no boot-loader or anything was on there. I went into the att service center and told them I realized it was off and I couldn't get it to turn back on. Every question they asked me I just said I dunno im not sure. The guy said let me trouble shoot this to see whats wrong....lol he came back and they gave me a new one on the spot.
It seems that you really don't know whats wrong with it so there is no morality issues........IF there were any before lol.

I've had two actual experiences. The first was a soft brick. This happened before anyone really knew about how to build a JIG. This happened within the first 30 days. I was basically in your boat, I had a bunch of crap on the internal SD card and I even still had some i9000 firmware still loaded to the phone. I exchanged it last October and never had any backlash.
The second time I messed up /efs. I was able to flash it back to stock and master clear the phone to remove traces that I had done anything to the phone. This time I dealt with samsung directly. They paid shipping both ways, made sure my phone was not water damaged and actually ended up replacing the mainboard (they seem to do that to fix a ton of issues).
Both experiences I mailed in my phone. I never dealt with a local service center.
Ok so here goes my soft brick story.
First off I've been searching for about 4 days and cant get anything to work.
The captivate has a bad power button, I've tried opening it up, doing that QCD cleaner and nothing works. So anyways I got USB debug on and was able to get into DL mode with ADB and used Odin one click, but thats where the problem started. After about 2 hrs of waiting after the process started it just hung so I pulled the cable, and now Im in a soft brick(Phone---!----PC). I read of some people saying they can flash while in that screen but I cant get Odin or Heimdall to even recognize the phone while it is like this.
I've tried the most recommended way of pulling battery, connecting phone to USB and holding both volume buttons to get it into download mode but that doesnt work. As soon as I pop the battery into the phone the Phone---!---PC screen pops up, I tried with both volume buttons, just the bottom volume and just the top volume button but nothing works, as soon as the battery goes into the phone the Phone---!---PC screen pops up.
Only thing left to try is making a USB Jig but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before and was able to fix it without the jig. Im doing this for a friend and I dont want to have to wait for the JIG to ship to my house, and Im not confident enough in making my own considering I dont even have a spare mini USB cable(I have an HTC Amaze so the cable isnt the same) and the cable I'm using is someone elses so I cant tear it up to even try and make a jig.
Also I've tried three different USB ports on my laptop and another three on a different laptop but it still doesnt get recognized.
Sorry for the long ass rant. but this is just driving me insane, I'm about to just use this phone as batting practice if I cant get this to work.
Edit: oh yea this happened while trying the Odin one click to get it back to stock, no GB or anything of the sort, the phone was still Froyo, just a custom froyo rom.

First, please don't double post, because it clutters up the forum. You could have added a post to your original thread.
Second, with this type of problem, I didn't need a jig. First, take out the battery and put it back in (dont turn on!!). Next, plug the USB part of the data cable in the computer. Use one of the various combos to get into recovery mode, like hold both volume buttons, and power/lock button). It should show the recovery screen. Then plug the microUSB part into your phone and run one click recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. This should solve your problem.
Please dont quote the OP when youre the first post...

Are you trying to update from stock?

You need a Samsung cable... I tried to do the same thing with an LG cable, what a nightmare!

RXDriv3r,
Use that screen the same as you would the regular Download mode screen.
U may have to try Linux if Windows don't work.

I read of some people saying they can flash while in that screen but I cant get Odin or Heimdall to even recognize the phone while it is like this.

are you putting the battery back in first? if so try leaving the battery out...I just tryed it on my spare captivate i took the battery out removed sim and sd card plugged the usb in and held all 3 buttons to simulate the power button sticking and then put the battery back in and it went right to download mode i hope this helps you.
Sorry about the duplicate threads, didnt realize that one had gone through since I got an error when I pressed post.
Anyway @nirajpant7 I cant pop the battery in the phone without it coming on by itself. Even if I dont press any buttons as soon as the battery goes in, the screen comes on with the phone--!--PC screen. Also my power button does not work so I cant really try all the button combos.
@SGA was trying to stay stock, phone was on a custom 2.2 rom so I wanted a stock 2.2 rom for the phone. Also does the cable matter that much? Hmm I dont think I have a way of getting a OEM Samsung cable.
@4-2ndtwin Yea thats what I heard but Odin, nor Kies, nor Heimdall recognize the phone while in that screen. Also on that thread you posted I've tried all the different ways more than once with no luck.
Anyway thanks for the fast replies guys I'll keep working on this and update with any new info...or a nice video of a flying captivate Lol
Just try another cable... even if it not OEM. In most cases where the PC does not match up the drivers its the cable. Even when I assigned the drivers manually to the device it would not work. It would always register as an unknown Google device. A new cable quickly sorted the problem out, and you can see that has been the main issue for anyone where Odin does not recognise. I am currently using a generic cable from the dollar store and it works, but the phones are picky. Sometimes they don't even like their own cables.
My cappy is recognised with cheap cable, my nexus s won't for the life of it identify with anything other than its own cable....
Its worth a shot...
