[Q] difference between 2.2 and 2.2.1 froyo? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

what is the difference between 2.2 and 2.2.1 froyo...can ryans lag fix work on cognition b8 instead of voodoo....which one is better

I would ask in the Cognition ROM thread to try and get an answer for this. I know it gets cluttered but it would seem more appropriate to ask there than here.

[Q] Rogers Captivate Voodoo LagFix

Am I able to install the Voodoo lag fix on my Captivate? I know the AT&T version is supported but I rather not brick my device. Please respond!
Thanks,
Androidfann
I have a Rogers Captivate, and I have used Voodoo for a while.
Make sure you have root access, and go nuts. It really does improve the quality.
have u used voodoo with 2.2?
i just got the captivate and am now on stock 2.2 with root and oclf installed. is it worth changing to voodoo?

OCLF uses ext2, which is less safe than ext4, which is used by Voodoo. If you want Voodoo, flash the JJ4 + Voodoo kernel in the dev section.

Depends. The newer Kernals really unlock a lot of features that we didn't have before, and you don't have now.
If you use your phone as your media player, than the benefits of Voodoo sound were enough to make me switch.
hey guys, i got the official rogers 2.2, can i still use voodoo? what good roms use rogers 2.2 as a base and include voodoo? any suggestions?
Hey folks, another Canadian Rogers Captivate user here...just wanted to confirm if I can use the Voodoo stable 5.4.1 for Froyo 2.2.1 as it looks like I'm on 2.2 stock (and rooted)? I'm new to android and a bit scared, but the Voodoo fix seems easy enough..
No one seems to be answering the main question posed here.
For us STOCK Rogers froyo users which version of voodoo should we use?
I am not running a custom rom, I have not used Odin (used Kies to install official froyo update). I can't seem to find a version of voodoo lagfix specifically for stock Rogers 2.2. If anyone e has it installed can you point us in the right direction?

Hi there to all asking about Voodoo for Rogers,
I have tried suckerpunch (based on speedmod)
Also tried the newest speedmod 13c
No problems with either.
I personally have tried voodoo (5.4.1 and the one for att captivate) with no luck at all.

People have been using the SpeedMod kernel which is the Rolls Royce of kernels; it enables a lot of the Captivates features and power. However, the Kernel is based on the i9000 kernel, which is the sister handset to the Captivate. The kernels are compatible across both phones, but the stock modems on captivates don't seem to do as well with some setups; you'll see this in the sprawling thread dedicated to that topic. Some people will flash an i9000 modem as well, and people seem to have varying results with different combinations.
Having said that, if you don't want to use bluetooth, the stock modem is perfectly serviceable. You could go ahead and flash your SpeedMod kernel and see vast improvements is phone function without tweaking in the handset's general recovery menu. There's also plenty there to keep the tweaksters busy
However, new to the scene is the same developers amalgam of his voodoo lagfix in a stock Rogers Froyo kernel. I'm running it now and I am still testing and checking things, but it seems fine though. There are some caveats to respect though, I just spent nearly an entire day getting my phone back to Stock Froyo after doing a bad job of 'un'lagfixing before flashing kernels. However, if it's your first endeavour into flashing or modifying your phone's software, it would be a relatively safe bet. You should not have any lagfix installed nor should you even think about doing it without doing a Titanium Backup of your phone, which would mean rooting.
Hope that helps a bit.

There is a 1-click Gingerbread UCKF1 thread in the dev forum. Thats what I am currently running and its working well so far.. The only issue I have is my GPS is crap.. but it was crap with stock froyo aswell so no big deal there.
I'm on the rogers i896 also.

It's sort of officially unofficial. It would seem to be a prebuild for a forthcoming Gingerbread release, it's tight and a great daily driver.
I did use Odin; follow the usual safety procedures and all will be well. The modem that comes with the package is great, but my 4G no longer works, it's 3G for now, but I got terrible 4G speeds anyway, so there's not much of a downgrade there.
The GPS did not function so great straight away, but I keyed in the code *#3214789650# - Settings - SUPL Settings, and changed the server to supl.google.com and the server port to 7276. I got much better results from that configuration.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the help of gps friend ... I have it installed and this great .. But you have some voovoo installed, can not find any on the net .. The voodoo 5.5.x served me just to change the start GTI9000, I do not like .. Thanks for your help..

[Q] A few quick questions before going 2.3.3

Hey guys, I'm currently on Darky's 9.3 (Froyo) and I'd like to try some Gingerbread . I was hoping I could clear a few things up first.
Is THIS the stock 2.3.3 rom? Can someone help me understand the XXJVA/B/K, or are they just newer revisions (B being the newest)? Being on Froyo, I should flash XWJVB NEE or XEE - correct? Will I have to remove any current lagfixes (I dont believe I applied it...but how can I check?)
Will there be incompatiblities for things like LauncherPro? Other apps?
I've read about a few of third party ROM's running 2.3.3 who are discussing camera app not working?
How do I save my Asphalt 5 savegame data? I've worked very hard to get to where I am, I'd like to be able to continue this progress
Lastly - which is your suggestion for 2.3.3? Stock, Simply Honey, Darky's 10.0 RC, MIUI, etc? OR, should I wait a little for it to mature...
Thanks for reading

+1 same questions
Gingerbread/2.3.3 not released yet .
Newer versions.
All flash lagfix must be removed .
Will there be incompatiblities for things like LauncherPro? Other apps?
Might be it depends upon the app most are 2.3.3 compatible .
I've read about a few of third party ROM's running 2.3.3 who are discussing camera app not working?
yes in custom roms . 2.3.3 is to all intents and purposes still a beta .
Any rom bar darkys but i would wait for the devs to get full working themes etc .
jje
Darky has a very nice GB-ROM (v10RC5) and Hamsterbread is also a good ROM. So just try some different ROMs and take your favorite. I've also tried Simply Honey but I didn't like the design...
Juwe's 4.1, based on JVB, is also a verry good gingerbread custom rom.

[Q] Samsung Captivate 2.3.3 Q/A

I have a question and you may find it silly but that's okay, I have my reasons. If I take my Rogers I896 Captivate from stock 2.2 rooted froyo and put it on GB 2.3.3 from the I-9000, Instead of having the GB launcher can I go back to touchwiz from Froyo? Because I love the dock and the launcher, very smooth. And if I go to 2.3.3 is there any chance I can go back to 2.2? I keep hearing everywhere that I will brick if I do.
Yeah you can go back, but you have to be careful because your flashing bootloaders.. A lot of the bricks from 2.3.3 back to 2.2 is user error.
Why do you want to put a i9000 ROM on your phone. Captivate has a ton of gingerbread ROMs...?

The stock 2.3.3 uses the "same" launcher as 2.2 its just TW4 instead of TW3
you can go back to 2.2 you just have to be careful that you dont flash new bootloaders

All the 2.3.3 ROMs for the captivate are from the i9000 source code of gingerbread.

What exactly do you mean by flashing new bootloaders? Are You supposed to keep the ones you got from. 2.3.3?
What folder are ringtones stored in 2.3.3
I want to move my MP3 ringtones to the phone ringtone folder but I can't find them. In the 2.2 version they were in the audio folder but now I can't find a audio folder.
Thanks,
I am trying to search for ROMs based on the I897 2.3.3? Is there a list somewhere or what is best way to search these ROMs without the i9000 ROMs being included? Specifically I would like a ROM that just removes all AT&T branding and bloatware as well as the power on/power off tones/screens.
I have loaded 2.3.3 and flashed the beta 2 Kernal from DG but I do not want Cognition just a clean version of the stock ROM and maybe add a couple things later.

[Q] Which are the best 2.1 ECLAIR roms for the Captivate?

Which are the best 2.1 ECLAIR roms for the Captivate? I've been using a 2.2 rom and it's very slow. I've been searching for 2.1 custom roms without succeeding. Does somebody knows a good 2.1 rom for the captivate?

You wont find any custom 2.1, only 2.2 and above. Just out of curiosity, why do you want to go SO far backwards?
I reasoned that it will be smoother on the captivates hardware. How come that there isn't any 2.1 roms?
Cuz it is 2.1... We had froyo and no body cared about 2.1. Now we have 4.0.3
Thread closed.
The best ROMs are those in current development, and are subjective no matter what platform they're built on. Do your own research and find one that works for you.
