[Q] Unable to see NC on Windows Explorer - Nook Color General

My NC shows the 5GB internal space and the 2GB external SD.
When I plug the NC into my Windows 7 32-bit with the USB cable,
(1) Explorer does not show the two "drives",
(2) the Disk Management utility acknowledges the connection, but shows "no media" for the two drives, and
(3) suddently the NC shows 0GB for the internal memory and no SD card mounted...!
I've tried everything.
(a) erase and de-register the NC (back to factory),
(b) make sure the NC is not in sleep mode,
(c) reboot the NC and my computer several times,
(d) try 3 separate USB cables, including the charging cable,
(e) revert Windows 7 to a previous configuration... and so on.
I'm trying my trusted XDA forum for some advise before I go back to Barnes & Noble... probably to just return the darned thing...

The same thing happened here. Sometimes rebooting the nook helped. But sometimes it did not. I am wondering if my USB cable is bad...
I also had problem charging the device. The yellow light at the tip of the cable would glow, but it would not fast charge with the nookcolor adaptor.
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App

I am having the same problem, but only since installing adb. I didn't bother with adb for the first few days but wanted to push a new Email.apk into /system/app and needed adb to do so.
I've also found that I need to uninstall the "Android Composite ADB Interface" under Android Phone in device manager in order for adb or Explorer to recognize it at all. When adb correctly recognizes my Nook, I can push files over using adb push, and I can ls using adb shell, but Explorer simply shows two removable disks (G: and H: ), which correspond to my /media and my SD card from before. I can't do anything with these removable disks though.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the bump, but just wondering if anyone has any help for this problem?

i think that it may be a bad cable. i took my nook to the local bn store and have cs agent tested my cable. it was bad. got a new cable and my nook now can charge and sideload.

Captivate & Mac OS X not mounting drives

Forgive me for my Basic lack of understanding on this one.
I'm running os x snow leopard 10.6.4 and when i plug it in usb it starts up a mtp application and only allows me access to pics and as a dial up modem. I would like to be able to mount the disc's to transfer files back and forth. and also when i run doubletwist it tells me to use the drop down menu but when im using usb there is no drop down menu. so no mounting.???
any ideas what im doing wrong?
You need to go into settings, applications, usb settings, and change it to ask when connected. Then when you plug it in choose mass storage from the list of options that come up. Also, enable usb debugging while you're at it

the usb debugging was the kicker after! thanks for your help your suggestion works a treat!

I feel like i'm going crazy here...
i have debugging enabled, i have my phone set to ask on connection.
i use osx 10.6.4.
there is no sign that i have a device detected on my mac.
the phone detects that it has been plugged in. (notifications)
i've gone to the notifications and selected mount.
i've used "adb devices" and get no results.
tried using double twist, nothing shows up.
my phone is still stock.
any help/ideas are appreciated!
Are you on a mac desktop? Mine would only recognize if I use a port on the back, not a port on the keyboard or the front of the machine....i think it's a power requirement thing. Try a different port and post the result.
Also try changing it from ask to being mountable instead and see if that changes things
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
it's a macbook pro. i've toggled between the "ask on connection" and auto mount. i've selected to mount the drives from the notifications, all with not mac love. however, it seems to work with my windows box (using the usb on the back, not front). I would like to get it working on my macbook though as that is much more convenient (couch + tv and all). seems that mac + this phone is not officially supported? (no drivers from samsung anyway).
any tips/idea/suggestions are much appreciated.
This is what I did for my phone.
I put it on "ask when making a connection"
I always choose PC Internet.
I enable USB debugging.
Plug my phone in.
Then go to the USB notification and hit "mount drives"
Then it is on my desktop!
I am using the aluminum macbook.
thanks for the input. i'll have to try it again when i get home.
an interesting note:
when i attach it to my macbookpro and i have it on "ask" the phone will display the connected notification, but it will not ask.

I think when it is in USB debugging mode it will not work like that. But I always select that every time I can.
But having it to ask, it does not default to anything else. Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but I don't have problems putting anything on my SD card.
yeah, i'm totally not having any luck with this device on osx.
i have 2 usb ports. i've tried both. i think i've plugged in the phone with every different option... with/without secondary sd, debug on/off, mass storage ...
i even tried it in ubuntu running in vmware fusion.
i can confirm that it does work (it works on my work pc [windows 7]) and have decided that there may be one additional thing to try. i have the stock cord at work and i bought a backup from the local store. the connector on the micro-usb side might not let the port fully connect (it's a little fatter than the one Samsung sent with it). i don't know if that could really happen since it does charge and the phone thinks it's got a connection. but as of now seems my only hope.

Don't forget to exclude the storage drives from being indexed by Spotlight or you will get all those .filename files in every directory damn near it.....gah I hate Spotlight sometimes
OK. so, first i'd like to thank everyone for their input.
I have figured it all out. It is the #$%^&* backup cord I bought.
I took it to work where my stock samsung cord is (and the phone connects) and swapped out cords. I got the exact same result, phone notices that it is plugged in and begins to charge and allows me to select to mount the cards. The computer however doesn't recognize that a USB device was attached. So i took that damn blocky cord and pushed it in really hard and BAM-O! the drives show up and i get nice full access.
so, because of the recessed opening for the micro USB port on the phone combo'd with the blocky micro USB end of my cord I am not getting a complete connection. at least i have a back up charger. i only need to do my syncing/hacking at home.
I guess this post is a little premature, but i'm fairly positive that when i get home with the good cord all will be fine.
FYI: Don't get a "Retrak" cord from fred meyers.
For those still having trouble even after enabling USB debugging etc:
On my 2 week old 17" MBP, only one of the USB ports (the one closest to the power supply) will allow the phone to show up as mounted -- it's also the only port which will charge an ipad fwiw, so I suspect that it's a power requirement issue.
Bottom line: try all the USB ports on your machine.

OMG, thx for this post! I was having the same issue. Now it's fixed after I used the stock cord, lol.
usb issues with mac mounting and self eject
first my phone does not mount to my macbook like it used (since july) to with stock usb cord but still mounts to my imac (also with bootcamp xp2) and powerpc g4 all running the latest OS X
on imac, when i try to copy a folder from sd card to my mac the sd card will eject it self after starting coping files. it started with a system.img file from my rom backup files, now when i try to copy other folders even a jpg from DCIM will eject the sd card and external sd. (see attachement for error code) then the error message that the disk was not ejected properly. all happens with any random files, copying folders from mac to sd cards is fine
in xp2, the desktop windows freeze while coping is in process, then i need to disconnect the usb cord to get back to the desktop
i copied same folders from sd card to external sd on the phone itself and it works
update: now, only by selecting a file on external sd will unmount both sd cards!!! going to buy a replacement cord and see....

[Q] Rooted NC suddenly won't sync with PC

Hey Guys,
I am having a vexing problem with my rooted NC. All of a sudden, after 5 great days of rooted goodness my NC will not sync up with my PC at all, not as itself or as a mass storage device. Moments before this happened, I had downloaded some pdf magazines through Calibre and several moments before I had installed the RepliGo pdf reader app from the market. I have deleted the two magazines, rebooted both my nook and computer several times, tried all of my pc's usb ports, unchecked the usb auto mount, the re checked and nothing I have tried has worked. Everything else is working great and I can load files on to the sd card through my PC and they are recognized just fine after I re-install the card. Also, when I plug my cord in to the nook linked to the PC it starts charging just fine.
Any help would be appreciated.
OK, let's start with a dumb question. My NC can be fickle...sometimes when I connect USB, it automatically mounts, other times it takes a while. One thing is for sure...I get nothing unless I look at the screen, and make sure it's unlocked (swiped past the lock screen). Have you made sure to do that?
Sorry if that's an idiotic question.
-Matt
Thanks for the quick reply. Each time I plugged in my nook after I made some change I was sure to unlock to confirm that I was still having the same problem. Also, when looking in the device manager I doesn't seem to acknowledge that a new device has been plugged in which makes me thing something is going on with me nook.
Next question...have you tried a few different USB cables? Also, I'm on my second (soon to be third) Nook. The first had a USB port that appeared to have minor internal damage. When you plug in the USB does it go in smoothly, or does it take a few tries? If the latter you may have port issues.
-Matt
I haven't yet, but I plan on bringing the cord to a B&N close to my work tomorrow to see if that is the problem. Is there somewhere that I can get the nook color usb drivers? I have seen a link on nook devs but it is in the context of using adb so I don't know if it would apply to this situation.
Thanks
Jon
I get this too. Got my cable replaced at B&N today. Haven't tried it on my computer yet though. When I connected mine to my MacBook, it will say that the nook is drawing too much power and then disables my USB port. Annoying.
Sent from my XDA app on my Nook Color
I was going to mention reinstalling the drivers, but you noted that it isn't showing up in device manager. But I wonder...take a look at:
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_USB_ADB
In particular, this might be helpful:
If you did not succeed, identify each nook entry in device manager (each device with a Hardware ID of USB\VID_2080&..., right click and uninstall it. There may be several. Uninstall all of them. Unplug the nookColor, replug it, and restart from Section III.

-Matt
So I would need to do all of the steps on the aforementioned nook devs site in order to reinstall the drivers. Also, in the device manager I looked at all the usb devices and did not find the right information to indicate the nook was attached.
Thanks for all of the help
Jon

[Q] nook not showing in list of devices in adb command prompt

does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can get my nook to show up in my list of devices attached?
It will not show up, so this missing link is what is stopping me from pushing market to my nook.

a good starting place is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882751
thanks for the suggestion i should have mentioned that i am running a MAC
I use a new macbook air running the most recent Mac OS for android software development and was frustrated at the start. Now it is like clockwork.
The first time seemed the toughest.
My initial configurations was froyo with usb set to debugging support.
Plugged it into my mac and didn't see the device with "adb devices".
Unplugged it and plugged it in again - still didn't see it.
I switched the nook from usb debugging to usb storage. The nook indicated that a usb cable was present and I could see the device in "finder" as a usb drive.
Switched the nook back to usb debugging and presto - there it was in adb devices!.
It will still disconnect from the mac after a period even without going to sleep. The solution is to unplug/plug it in again and it will show back in the devices list.
Thought I was going mad getting this to work but I've got this down to a quick process.

thanks for the idea because any idea is something to look into at this point.
problem with your suggestion though is that i am running honeycomb on my nook i do not have a way in the usb selections to toggle between usb debugging and usb storage.
Try adb wireless. Works well for me under linux mint.
i cant do that otherwise i would, i cant get to the point of putting market on my device to where i could even download the ADBwireless app. since i cant do that i have to go with the usb plug in. in other words im screwed
adb kill-server
adb devices
Run the above as Root (if possible) while your NC is plugged in.

[Q] Optimus 2x on mac os X

I recently got the new LG Optimus 2X and im having some real headache over it..
The thing is that it refuses to mount its sdcard on my macbook (10.6.6).
I tryed pretty much everything short of injecting valium, but it simply will not comply.
So could anyone please help me before my hair turns gray and falls off?
It pops up on win xp, both on a pc and in a vmware xp system on the mac, so i assume that its not using the default mass storage system anymore, some google searches hints that its using a semi-proprietary system similar to some mp3- and media-players.
So far ive been using my old phone as SD card adapter, and i also have a wifi network (rarely used, using mobile internet on a usb dongle) for ftp transfers.
But that aint enough, i need to be able to transfer audio/video files aswell as games/apps and backups to/from my phone in a easier fasion than adb push or ftp.
i really like the phone but im concidering returning it and buy a mac compatible phone instead.. but there are no other tegra phones available atm...
Does it use MTP? If so, check out http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/
I have a Tegra powered tablet (Advent Vega) and my MacBook Pro sees the sd card when mounted no problem.
You could also look at a program called Syncmate. Mac client and free Android version
XNJB is a no-go.. Will not detect a device.
Googlesearch mac with optimus x2 only reveals mac address related links or sites containing the words in different topic lists.
syncmate is a internet-solution, nothing gets synced locally..
And that is simply not an option when i want to transfer +1gb files (at the best of times i reach about 150k/s, usually around 10-30k/s)
Seems to work fine on my MacBook Pro.. no problem at all!
I have some trouble with the phone not detecting the second SD card, solution for me was to uncheck "USB Debugging" while it was plugged in.
Or
Plugout
Disable USB-Debugging
Plug in
Dangerous one: (This might damage current content on your SD-Card, i take no responsability)
While Phone is live
Plug out the SD
Phone goes belly up about it
Says it might be damaged and needs to be reformated
let the phone reformat the SD-Card
Plug the phone back in the Mac
Poof SDcard once again viewable
^^ Above is not recommended, and i can not explain why it worked. also i do not know if it might damage other components of the phone. But mine looks to be just fine and the SD-Card is performing as intended.
Why it is so hard for the Computers to see the external SD is a good Question, i have had the same issues with my windows 7 PC .. USB debugging seemed to be the fix initially.

On the Optimus 2X you need to activate yourself the USB Mass Storage mode, Go on Applications -> Settings -> SD Card & Phone Storage -> Mass storage only
Desmopro, i already tryed that.
The mass storage setting disables the adb debug tho.
My computer can see the device in system profiler, a hardware list,
And adb devices lists it aswell, but disk utility can't see any connected storage,
mounted or otherwise.

What version of OSX you use ?
In terminal, can you see the device (on /dev) ?
Think to reinstall a combo update, to clean up your system
If you use 10.7 beta and you are a developper or a beta tester, send a report to Apple
If you use 10.7 beta found on bittorrent, downgrade to 10.6
The Optimus 2X dont use MTP but the old mass storage method, so there is normally no problem to use OSX with
Im using 10.6.6.
Its strange, my htc hero mounts just fine, without any hazzle or inconvenience, but the optimus will not show..
I finally did find the issue tho, as soon as i eject the external sd-card (remove it physically), the internal storage pops up without a hickup.
But as soon as i insert the sd card, the mounted card stops responding, folders wont refresh, file copy stops and the only option is to eject the media from finder.
So regardless of what i try, i cannot get the external card mounted on my mac, even tho it works fine on pc.
..ive been using my sd card from my hero from the moment i got the phone..

[Q] NC is automatically installed as B&N Ebook USB Device

I'm running CM7 on my NC. Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop. I cannot get my NC to show up under Computer Management->Devices as anything but B&N Ebook USB Disk (it shows two entries). When I uninstall these entries, disconnect the NC, reconnect the NC, my laptop will recognize the NC as the B&N Ebook USB Disk and I can't override or stop it from automatically installing it as such. I also don't seem to be able to "Upgrade Driver" for either the B&N Ebook USB Disk entry nor the USB Mass Storage Device. Windows reports that it's determined the best driver is installed.
What I've done:
-Installed the Android USB drivers.
-Tried uninstalling the USB Mass Storage Device entry for the NC.
-Tried rebooting both computer and NC and then reconnect.
Is there anyway to stop Windows 7 from automatically installing the driver? When it's doing this, there isn't a stop or cancel button in the dialog. Is there anyway to get my NC to be recognized as an Android Composite ADB Interface? My NC isn't showing up under any kind of Android Phone entry either (there isn't an entry for Android Phone either).
thanks for your help. I writing this from Helmand Province Afghanistan tonight.
