I am really close to buying a Nook Color, but with my luck an updated model will be available shortly after. I would be willing to wait a couple of months if a new one was on the horizon.
Then again, I could get one now, then give it to my g/f when a new one comes out.
i doubt it, ive heard nothing about a new model, in fact why would they release a new one? this one does everything they would want the device to do. maybe they would do something about the handful of design flaws.. but it does not appear to have created enough buzz to warrant a redesign. Not to mention the fact that this one is rather new to the market.
I wouldn't expect a nook color 2 for some time, if at all. B&N is hurting pretty bad as a company (read: hemorrhaging money). I know they struck gold Jerry with the original nook (~30% market share for e-readers), but that still doesn't change the fact that B&N can't close stores fast enough.
B&N put out an ultra-fancy e-reader, one that is vastly over-qualified for what they wanted it to do, so there's lots of room for them to grow into as they release updates. As far as we know, the nook color (hardware wise) can handle both Froyo and Gingerbread with ease, and by the looks of it HoneyComb as well. Also, it was about a year inbetween the two nooks being released, so I would count on almost 1.5-2 years before we start hearing rummors.
I say, get one while you have the cash.
Other plans
I'm pretty sure that B&N is going to shift their goals to building out their Development platform before planning new hardware. Besides, they aren't making their margin on these Nooks, but rather setting up a somewhat razor/refill market that will (hopefully) get people into stores and more interested in their eBooks.
They might NOT be on top of the stack right now, but I'd go to B&N before setting foot in a Borders...

I'm sorry but by this logic... why buy anything tech based? I don't need to think about buying the Iphone 4, I know that 5 will be out soon. Shortly after that 6, so on and so forth.
You need to read less what HACKERS are doing, and more what people SHOULD be doing with a Nookcolor. In the E-Reader market, the nookcolor is the top of the line model. When you look at other E-Readers many people rather have E-Ink (or its at least a common complaint), Currently a real "Nook Color" base doesn't exist. A lot of the features are not fully formed, and completely designed. Many Magazines, do not appear on the market. Even a lot of the actual "E-Reader" aspects are not all there, but lets move past this.
For there to be a "NookColor 2" there needs to be a reason to justify a better version. Unlike Apple B&N cant really afford to do an upgrade like the 3g to 3gs. The screen is very high grade, theres no real lag reading, the E-Reader programs are way better than the default one, backlit, color, etc. The most an upgrade would have would be more a redesign, theres nothing else it needs that it doesn't already have. Things like more memory would fall short, 5 gigs is more than enough for the core function, and buying a memory card is not that much of a hassle.
I agree, no upgrade coming this year. Feel free to buy!

Check out this link, it's a wiki for investers: http://www.wikinvest.com/stock/Barnes_&_Noble_(BKS)
Now go down to "business growth."
B&N is, for a lack of a better term, bleeding money at an unsustainable rate.
Hell, they lost over $40 Million in just the last half of 2010. That's more than they made in the entire year of 2010. And on top of that, they earned HALF of what they made in 2009. Their operating margin(% of the difference between cost and retail of products sold that can go towards profit, or return on sales) fell from 2.8% to 1.3%(BTW that's god-awfull)
Even with their sales increasing nearly by double digits quarter after quarter. They make so little(% wise) that the increase of sales is overshadowed by the increase of costs assosiated with selling more of something.
So, pretty much half of the company just breaks even. The other half either losses money, or losses LOTS of money.
Don't be surprised if B&N doesn't survive long enough to honor our 1yr warrenties.
The real question is. Who's going to buy them? And, will the nook product line survive the transfer of ownership?
Edit: added comment about increasing sales.

Actually, I am not the type of person to sit back and wait for the latest version to come out, unless it has been some time since the original came out. Also, even if a new version comes out it has to be a big enough change for me to buy it. For instance, I bought the first generation iPod Touch, but didn't spring for the subsequent Gen. 2 or 3 because they were only minor upgrades, in my opinion. But when Gen. 4 came out, I upgraded.
The Nook has been out since last fall, I believe, and I remember reading on some tech site (CNET, maybe?) that this spring a new Nook Color would appear with 3g. I would only get this, however, if the 3g was free like on the Kindle.
In any event, where would you guys be more likely to purchase a Nook Color -- at an online retailer, or go directly to your local B&N store?
Aww that is news is bad for BN...my three stores always have people in them and two of them I always have to wait in line...unless I am there at odd hours
If I can buy locally for almost the same price...I will always buy locally. Now if I could have obtained the nook for $200 online...you bet I would have gone online! I think most "e-reader" people would prefer to go to a physical store than buy online...but look at the success of the Kindle...
Another aspect my stores are pushing are the Nook Color classes or meeting to share tips and tricks and how toos on the NC. While these dont apply to me...I would imagine they would appeal to the mass users of the NC.
To Whom It May Concern,
As an Android enthusiast and owner of a Nook Color, I'd like to let you know that your entirely open and permissive attitude towards the modding community has made me VERY inclined to purchase content from you whenever possible. I've already bought three e-books from you and plan to buy more from you and ONLY you whenever I feel like purchasing content. This approach IS making you money. I promise.
Sincerely,

Somehow I do not think they intended the Nook to be as open as it is.

Maybe, but they haven't done anything to change it in any of their updates, either.
Let's hope that attitude remains the same when the official 2.2 update comes out. I'm with you though, I love this thing! Outside of Netflix, there's nothing the iPad has that I want and I cannot wait for Google to release their 3+ AOSP so we can make these Nooks even better!
You'd be surprised at what B&N suspected. I mean why else pack this much punch into an ereader with the Android OS backing it? They knew what they were doing. If they didn't, then I feel sorry for them...Im happy it got past them, but c'mon, the Android community has blown up since late 2009, Rooting became 100% legal (even if it voids the warrenty) and they even made it easy by allowing the SD card to boot first! They either planned it or it was horribly designed.
It's just guesswork, but I think B&N made it just difficult enough that casual users wouldn't be likely to screw up their NC but easy enough that the android community would be able to- and generate a huge amount of buzz about the Nook Color.
If it was JUST an e-reader as intended, half the articles you see online would not exist; maybe even fewer.
Pretty good advertising if you ask me...

There's no such thing as bad press.
The flip side to having little to no device security is easy maintenance. I'd be surprised if BN stores didn't have a full reinstall/recover microsd image. It would be so easy to do.

I also think that at LEAST 1/3rd (if not way, way more than that) of the people who bought it did so to make it into a tablet (or the very least to root it)
I am buying books on it. I am recommending friends buy it, and let them know they only get help if they bought it from Barnes and Noble.
I want B&N to get all the revenue from this device, and won't touch a Best Buy unit.
And yes, I bought it once I knew it was rootable and a great platform to learn Android hardware with.
Even as an Amazon Prime member/Kindle owner, I have been purchasing ebooks from B &N to show support for this device. I had planned on buying a Xoom this summer, but this device has exceeded my expectations.
They really need to up their advertising on this device.

This is one of my biggest questions about the NC. I strongly suspect that development of the device pre-dates Barnes and Noble's interest in it, though I have no way of knowing that for sure.
I bought my Nook and one for my nephew as soon as they rooted it with no intention of using it as an e-reader. I had never been to a B&N and bought all of my books from Amazon or Borders. Since I bought the Nook I ordered all of my school books from B&N and have also bought a few e-books and audio books from them. The Nook provided exposure to B&N that they would not of had in my case.
Just my 2 cents on how open b&n is about rooting the nc. I went into a bn store to get a cover and was presented a book by an employee on how to root and make it a full fledged tablet.

The reps are real cool about rooting it and know what they're talking about. Then you get the guy I got the other day who knew nothing about the nook period. They either know all or are dumb as hell.
As an employee of BN, specifically a digital lead, with a rooted nook color running CM7, I do my best to let management know how important it is for me to be able to support the modding community. I root devices in-store, fix rooted devices, and make sure returns and warranty problems go off without a hitch even for modded machines. I never feel as though I am going against the grain and I think we're being very smart about all of this so far.
I guess I'm in the minority here. I bought the Nook because I'm too cheap for the iPad. I'm also too cheap to pay B&N's prices for their books and I am always on the lookout for free ebooks. Paying $7.00 and more on a regular basis for books seems like waste.

Dear Barnes & Noble;
I bought the Nook Color in mid-December simply because it could be rooted. Since that time, I have purchased a cover, screen protectors, and extra charger and 58 e-books. The NC is a great product, and your employees that I've dealt with support it enthusiastically, even though it's rooted. This results in a happy, loyal customer base and helps ensure repeat business. Kudos to you.
I will sign the letter too!
I had no great love for Barnes & Noble before this (their pricing took a steep upward spiral many years ago; long ago they were the only good discounter, but that's long gone and I have little use for lattes and biscotti in a bookstore). But now I have a very soft spot for them and we visit the store more frequently to buy things as inexpensive as paper magazines and toys and as expensive as, well, the Nook.
Let's hope they continue with the openness and don't make fools of us by root-blocking attempts with the 2.2 release.
For what it's worth every B&N clerk I've asked about the Nook has "just happened to mention" that it's rootable -- I almost think it's part of their official sales pitch.
Given that B&N set up store displays for the Nook Color that included a book that told you how to root the Nook ... I'd guess they were pretty open to the idea that it would be ... open. Heck, I've had 2 long conversations with employees in B&N stores telling them about how to get more up to date info here on XDA. I can't read the minds of the execs at the top that product managed Nook Color, but everything from the lower levels says they're perfectly happy with it.
Consider me /signed as well
Just been to get the new Nook, for 139bucks, figured it'd make for a decent reader. Specs seem great, the display is beautiful, and though don't have plans to root/play with it as my other machines, it's always good to know it's possible. Had a 1st gen Kindle when it came out, but the keyboard/usuability/scrolling around, just never clicked. Found it very annoying to actually use in it's designed for role as a reader. Especially the location of the buttons to move around. So, when I saw this new Nook Touch, and had chance to play with it in the store before they were available to purchase, I figured B&N have created an excellent winner here. A neat device perfectly suited for it's role, REALLY great form factor to the point you can drop it in your pocket easily (cargo pants at least!). Great price. An obviously well designed piece of tech!
Good job I actually am aware of the device.
Got to the store, found the booth setup for the Nooks, and they had all 3 available to play with. There was a girl dealing with a customer, so I stood back and waited.
Found myself getting more and more distraught to hear what she was saying. She had an iPad and had no qualms singing it's praises, and that it can do so much more than what this 139 machine can do. The... customer? (not sure if going to be a customer if they're not going to buy the machine after being put off) admitted they had an iPad, loved it to bits, but was looking at this new Nook as it DID look a great device, more portable, battery life being good.
The girl /really/ did a bang up job putting this guy not only off the new nook touch, but the color nook too 'yah, don't think you can play mp3's on this, but my ipad is REALLY good, sync's up with Itunes just great, and the sound, it's awesome, and...'
Didn't want to look the annoying know it all, but couldn't help but mention 'it'll play most stuff you throw at it, it's not a bad machine for the price' and left it there. Ended up having to find another assistant who looked after me wonderfully. Not a hard job I'd think to sell something to a customer, he even mentioned how he had one himself and preferred it to everything else he'd tried (hey, could be lying through his teeth, but it's a nice thing to hear the person selling you the device has one and enjoys it!)
But...
sheesh, I hope that's not the typical level of knowledge being shown by staffing selling the hardware. To compare a 500 (minimum, I didn't ask what model/storage/3g plan she had) device to a 139 book reader seems a bit silly.
But to see someone actively try so hard to put a customer off wanting to buy a product from their store? Never seen anything like it.
Hopefully, B&N can give a bit of training to their staff on what they're selling if this is to be their main product coming up. There were a few other things this sales girl simply had no idea about, should be covered in <5 mins training (app stores, mp3 playing, youtube content, browsing). Not asking them to know the ins and outs of flashing CM onto it and getting a full app market on, but knowing that B&N DO have their own app market for stuff other than just books? Guess not on commission, so don't really care, but even so.
/phew, rant off.
Oh, and apologies for this being in the Nook Color section, not sure where should be, but /really/ needed to vent this off to a community who loves these devices!
If/when the nook touch forums get up, wouldn't mind this thread being pushed across please!
Cheers
I was in a B&N store yesterday and took a few minutes to check out the new Nook. I had no intention of buying, I just wanted to play with it in person. As I was there, I overheard the sales person helping another customer who was asking about the difference between this and the Nook Color. The sales guy said, "well, this is new one is an e-reader, whereas that one is a Google tablet. So anything you can do on any other Google tablet, you can do on that one."
I just cringed.
a week after i bought my nook color i went back to barnes n nobles to buy screen protectors and a silicon case for it. i took my nook color in with me, put it on the counter and said "i want screen protectors and a black scilicon case for this nook color". the girl there sells me both case and protectors for the nook 3g. not realizing that it wasnt for my nook i tried to apply screen protectors, then i saw they werent right.. i took em back and they wouldnot return the screen protectors cuz they had been 'used'.. those god damned protectors cost 16 dollars for 2! TWO!.. vultures...

Ineffective
Relatively good idea but ineffective. Reason? Google don't/won't give a damn anyway. They simply don't care and buying from another store won't make the slightest bit of difference.
What will make a difference is: Noise. And lots of it.
The only thing I think will work is if everyone who is irritated by the fact that their pre-orders are going to arrive AFTER retail stores stock and sell this device starts getting VERY noisy about it on Google+, facebook, anywhere where there is a community. Google+ would be ideal - there's already noise on there about this farce.
So it is ridiculous that a company can so blatantly alienate it's pre-order (and therefore most likely loyal and fervent) customers who would most likely evangelise about Google, it's services and products. It's the very definition of dumb and the sad truth is that they genuinely don't give a damn. They don't care at all.
I'm very tempted to simply cancel my order because if they don't care enough to organise things so that pre-order customers get their orders first then thank you very much but see you later. It's not a premium tablet and yet, I very much have a case of sour grapes going on here as I'm sure others here can relate too. It doesn't bode well for the ego in me to see that some others have ordered on other websites AND had their devices DELIVERED before Google themselves can even get their ass into gear and organise delivery for their loyal pre-order customer. I have to say - pre-ordering this product at such an early stage is/was genuinely an act of faith in that lots of us who did so didn't have all that much info to go on as to whether this product was any good. It seems that Google, like virtually EVERY other company out there simply doesn't believe or operate with the belief that treating customers well is good business sense - and why should they. They get by just fine without our tablet purchases from them thank you very much. I've invested a lot of time in Google's products and services. I'm a self-confessed, labelled "geek" and believe me - this has me pissed off enough to move to other services, and as the elder-geek in my circle of friends and family, I'd take them with me slowly but surely. Sour grapes indeed.
So: A: Google simply don't care
B: Make some noise!

noble effort, but i really dont think even the slew of pissed off people on here would make a dent.
plus, those other app stores suck.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a bit pissed about the whole shipping thing... but this is the first time google had ever pissed me off and I'm a long timer user.
A few days isn't going to make that big of a difference.
Except that we do get the best warranty coverage since we bought from the Play Store. Google is going to handle our warranty stuff instead of Asus, they will ship a new one out before as soon as we say something is wrong. And pay the shipping for our broken tablet to be shipped to them.
And while this might be slightly annoying, Google is and awesome company that I use every single day.
If you want to really protest do the following:
Step 1: Switch to HotMail.
Step 2: Change your Search Engine to Bing or Yahoo.
Step 3: Sell your Android Smart Phone and Tablet to buy an iPhone, have a ton of fun loading your awesome custom Rom's onto it.
agreed, while i am mad stores have them first, let's all take a deep breathe and relax here. I got my shipping emal saturday morning so i will have my device on Tuesday, i am happy and it and looking forward to my tasty treat!

Morning! Still aint got ****. I preordered 7/2. Got charged on 7/13 though.
I think those "kids", yes i said it, have never dealt with a mass distribution like this on a grand scale. They're geeks, what do they really know about the production line. All it would've took for those geniuses to make a ****ing priority list and ship preorders first, then ship to retailers, instead of giving them stock and say, "hey, don't sell it yet". How hard is that?
Its simple yet so hard for one person to realize that over there? Im with the OP. Where's the loyalty???

I SO AGREE with what your saying in op post. except we here on xda is a minority compared to all the android tablet users . There are not really enough of us to make a stand with the whole no buy from market thing. Nor do i think its fair. Google is really setup to sell or distribute hardware.Asus has been a mess for the past years and getting worse. I have a asus netbook that has a issue with the camera. The repair facility is 4 miles from my house. I had to mail the thing to them using UPS. THEN WAIT for them to repair it mail it to there shipping facility in chicago. 5 hours away and then ship it to me.. TRUE STORY.
SO with that all said this is a Android tablet (Kinda a TOY) .we will all get thru this launch shipping mess .We will be happy before you know it.. Lets just hope that asus has not messed up the build quality we would expect from google.
Good luck alll

I don't think it's fair to punish a mistake, as long as they acknowledge the mistake and apologize. I don't really believe in revenge. Google has been good as a company and doesn't warrant punishment in the form of boycotting the apps from their store in my opinion. It sucks though and really Hope that they straighten this out with an apology of some sort. Regardless, i don't think I'd preorder from Google again unless i have confidence that they'll learn from this fiasco.

Refuse shipment. Buy from someone who isn't Google or wait for the next hot thing. With all the screen issues and other QA issues, it's just waiting to receive your broken tablet and mail it back to them anyway. Refuse delivery, ship it back on their dime and buy it from a store where you can check the unit before you leave. Screw Google, screw their poor customer service and screw their Play Store.
I was tempted to cancel before but if you really wanted to stop your google from processing, refusing shipment, restocking fee, you can simply freeze ur cc or req a new card and new #. Why is that so difficult? U can also tell ur cc company its fraud, and they won't allow it to go through. BofA called me and I approved the charge.
Do it! Wake up
Sent from my SGH-T959
Also to be fair, it's not entirely Google's fault. If everyone did a told, this wouldn't have happened. There are more than one factor than Google messed up. And I'm not going to say "screw Google"when they brought us Android!
My life for Aiur
I think many of us (especially us Canadians who are still mostly N7-less) are pretty pissed off at how Google handled the pre-orders. I think many of you would agree that it's a reasonable expectation that pre-orders from the supplier should come before retailers are able to put theirs on the shelf. This is especially reasonable when you consider that we were charged 2-day shipping via UPS without any other alternative from Google. It has also been reported that some Canadians are getting 4-day shipping estimates even though they paid for supposed 2-day shipping.
I know that many of you will probably tell me to stop whining and just suck it up because they didn't break any promise as to the plain writing contractual agreement. But that doesn't mean that there are implicit expectations which should be met in good faith. This is especially true for a company that has a history of catering to its users and still holds the informal motto of "don't be evil".
I know that Google has always been a pretty open company and listened to feedback, and I still trust that they uphold these values. Is there anything we can do as a group of people to voice our opinions directly to them and let them know? I am sure that many of us are also developers hoping to get their first hands on the device as well. And I'm sure that Google would like to keep its developing community happy.
Addendum:
I just wanted to say why I wrote the post. This is was not meant to be a rant. If you re-read the OP, you will see that I am actually looking for a way to collectively voice to Google our discontent. That's because I believe Google to be a high-quality company that listens to its users. And I do WANT to order from Google Play again for the next device, but not before helping them improve their process by vocalizing our disappointments to them.
A rant in itself is useless, but what I am looking for is a way to let Google know where they can improve so we can enjoy a better Play store in the future.
no point of pre-ordering if we are not given any exclusivity ><
Stop whining.

Not mad at all, I am getting what I paid for.
It's funny when people say that they aren't upset that they over paid for a product that they'll get after people that didn't pre-order.

It has also been reported that some Canadians are getting 4-day shipping estimates even though they paid for supposed 2-day shipping.

awww big baby didnt get his shiny nexus 7 before everyone else *cries*.
Wah. get over it.
Maybe you should launch Angry Birds at them?
I'm a little upset I paid for the shipping from the play store when I could have e just ordered from games top.. Not pay the shipping and get my n7 sooner. It's not that big of a deal for me but everyone will forget later today when they get their devices.

you got/will get it a week after everyone else. how will you manage to live?
Angry is probably too strong, but i'd have hoped (as with pre-ordering anything) that you'd at least get the thing delivered on launch day. Wouldn't expect to get it early necessarily and there are clear commercial reasons why this wouldn't go down well for a product thats being sold via third parties as well as from Google directly. And if the courier is struggling to keep up then its probably Google's fault for apparently giving regional exclusivity to any single company. After all, the likes of Amazon seem to cope quite well using multiple couriers and getting large volume launches of items out on time.
And certainly the communication side of things could've been alot better done than it has been, not to mention the customer services element for those who tried unsuccessfully to can pre-orders a week or more ago.
Isn't this what that OTHER thread is for?

Can't tell if trolls or just stupid.
Did either of you even read the OP? He had an extremely valid point. We paid for required two-day shipping, supposedly in an effort to receive our products on or before the day everyone else could receive theirs. Of course this was not guaranteed by Google, but the fact that it didn't happen makes it unlikely that I'll ever preorder another Google product unless they adapt the same philosophy used elsewhere, like Amazon and Apple.
I followed the rumors since the 370T, preordered within minutes of availability, paid extra for mandatory expedited shipping, and it's finally being delivered tonight. Folks simply wandered into stores last week and picked theirs up. That's not how it should work. I'm not whining - I just believe Google should handle things differently in the future.

That's not my point as Jiggavolt has also explained. I would gladly have paid $5 or $10 shipping to get 3-week shipping rather than the 2-day shipping. But since we were required to purchase $20 (Canadian) 2-day shipping (which turned out to NOT be 2-DAY shipping AT ALL), I think it's fair to say that I feel a little cheated. Beyond that, there are implicit expectations that have not really been followed through or at least communicated. Even a simple apology to say that they were a bit slow would satisfy me.

No, I'm seeking an avenue to communicate discontent with Google in a collective way.

Ha! Since you stated that so eloquently, I just can't argue with it
Yeah, I could see being upset, actually. I ended up just calling all of the Gamestop stores within 15 miles (probably 6 of them) before I found one that had one in stock.
I would be angry too, but mainly about the 2 day shipping issue. However, I believe that UPS is at fault here if they cannot deliver within two days, not Google. I did not want to pay for shipping so I picked mine up at Staples on Sunday.
It's easy. Next time Google comes out with another device. DO NOT ORDER FROM THE PLAY STORE no matter what they say. You will get PLAYED again. They named it the PLAY store for a reason.
In my mind, Google has botched the entire process from start to finish.
1. Mystery specs - for the longest time, nobody could figure out if it had MHL or HDMI out, USB OTG, external storage, etc. Even media sites were conflicted on these features.
2. Saying that it will only be available on the Played store when it wasn't.
3. Shipping to retailers FIRST before fulfilling their own pre-orders hoping that retailers will hold them for an unspecified amount of time.
4. Shipping devices in no discernible order (FIFO, LIFO), etc.
5. Shipping 8GB orders first before 16GB, and then 16GB before those that also bundled a case with it.
6. 2 day shipping questionable... existing posted screenshots showing estimated time of delivery of 4+ days confirms this.
7. Canada gets brown back and US gets black back. WTF?
8. No able to cancel orders and no response from e-mails (at least for emails from Canada).
9. No specific launch date except mid-July. It's mid-July already, and some haven't even seen movement on their orders.
10. No explanation from Google over this fiasco.
The only redeeming feature was the price.
I don't know if this is Asus' fault or not, but Google is to blame. I think what Google should have done is hold shipping to retailers until they fulfilled their own Played store pre-orders first. None of this "everyone gets it at the same time" crap... WE OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T ORDER IT AT THE SAME TIME, so why go this route? If retailers don't have stock to sell, they can't sell it. However, if they do and it is taking up space, you can bet somebody is going to break the rule... esp. when there is no specific date to sell it.
The Played store is the premiere store for buying google branded devices. Google should make sure that when you order from there, you are at least guaranteed to get it the same time, if not earlier, than all other retailers at launch. Otherwise it is pointless to pay shipping when you could just walk to your local B&M and buy it right away for the same price - minus shipping. As it stands now, you would be a fool to order from the played store for the next device no matter how exclusive it will be.
The next time around, not ordering devices from the played store will be a good lesson for google.
If Steve Jobs were alive and this was an Apple product, he would have made it right by now. God rest his soul, he's probably laughing in his grave right now.
In the words of Justin Timberlake... Cry me a river.
I can't say I'm exactly thrilled over the situation. I found out Staples has them on the shelf right now. Meanwhile, I've received nothing from Google regarding my pre-order. No status update, no shipping notification, nothing. It stings a little bit to realize I'm paying more to get it later when you factor in the shipping cost... especially when I could have one within 5 minutes since Staples is just down the road...
I'm not exactly angry to go to war with Google over this, but this is definitely some serious food for thought for future purchases. I can't see myself possibly pre-ordering through Google again.
Anyone who pre-ordered with the expectation of receiving it before those who didn't pre-order, had the wrong expectations. I've been involved with many pre-orders and known of many many more. I've never seen one with that expectation.
However, you should expect to receive it on the generally available (GA) date. That's where this release broke down. Whether it's Google or Asus, it doesn't matter. The process failed.
However number 2. When I saw that pre-orders were paying for shipping and taxes, a flag went up for me. I decided to not pre-order as it would be cheaper for me to walk into a store and buy on the GA date. I saw little value in pre-ordering.
