Need for Kernels and Modems? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I have read correctly Flashing a new ROM doesn't make changes to Kernel or the Modem. First is this correct? Second if this correct is there a need to Flash different Kernel or Modem? Third if you do need to flash a separate Kernel or Modem is this done though ROM Manager after you have new ROM going?
Thanks

Almost all roms if not everyone available for the captivate will change your modem and kernel. Most of the roms available are based off of i900 froyo, so you need a compatible modem and kernel.
You can change your modern and or kernel using clockwork recovery which rom manager installs. So if you were on a rom that used kernel a, but you wanted kernel b you can change just the kernel and keep the rom

I was aware that kernels are flashed as part of the ROM, but modems are too? Does that mean I don't need to worry about compatibility, I can just flash ROMs and be good to go?
With HTC devices the modem (we call it radio) is stored on a different partition from the ROM so kernel, spl/bootloader and radio have to match when installing a new ROM.

Yeah, modems are included with the roms. I am guessing that true captivate roms (Cognition) would not have to include a modem if they chose not to (as long as everybody does the suggested 'flash back to stock'), but the i9000 based roms pretty much have to include a modem.

Nope, cognition would take care of it. I'm not sure what modem Cognition is using, but I am 100% sure it includes one. There are to many different opinions about modems for a developer not to favor one over another and include it in their rom.
Even if Cognition for some reason did not include a modem, your JH7 modem would be fine with the cognition rom/kernel.

[MOD] T959UVJFD Kernel support in newer builds (Flashable .zip)

I've created a zip archive that can be flashed via Clockworkmod Recovery to replace the necessary files in /system/lib and /system/bin to flash a kernel built against T959UVJFD onto a newer build (thanks to eugene373 for the list of necessary files^_^).
Incase anybody is wondering... I've flashed this myself with no issues and bluetooth works fine.
Edit: A good example of this is flashing one of JAC's or kingklick's kernels onto the new OTA UVJI6 firmware .
Forgive the noob question, but will this allow us to flash Jac's XMOD kernels on a JI6 rom?
Nvm found the answer myself. For any other noobs wondering, the answer is yes. Duh
Thanks for posting this!

Edit: Nope. Phone hangs at Vibrant screen.
Worked perfectly for me. Saw the other threads about this and just hadn't had time to give it a go but I am now running Jac's uv/oc/cf.

Can you describe the steps you took to flash this? I came from stock JFD (repartition and EFS clear checked) to JI6 (nothing checked) and then flashed the .zip with CWM and it worked fine.
Spoke too soon. I just flashed the zip without JAC's kernel because I forgot I deleted it from the phone after I installed JI6. So I pushed the 1.1 OCUV kernel to the phone, flashed it and it worked. Seems a little choppy though but I will give it a few minutes and maybe another reboot to see if it settles in. Thanks for the work.
Edit: Oh yeah, it's frikkin rippin now! Thanks
Thanks. I haven't quite decided to do this yet, and it helps to have an easier way to do it. I need to go search later, but anyone care to save me time and explain what the downsides are to reverting these libraries to earlier versions?
Didn't work for me...
I tried to flash using colockwork, got stuck at vibrant screen...
So you have to flash this and JAC's kernel at the same time? I'm a noob so please help me out...

Yes. Flash back support then BEFORE rebooting flash the kernel you want. Or use the all in one zip posted above.
Thanks...
Thank you guys for your help... I'm trying the all in one now...
So, just to be clear, from ji6, I reboot with clock work, flash old kernel support, when while still in clockwork, proceed to flash jac's kernel, right, then reboot? Or can reboot after applying old kernal support, then go crazy flashing kernels?

Which CM7 Rom should i flash?

Hi all
I'm interested in trying out cyonagenmod, but i have no idea which rom to flash.
I thought i would just try the latest nightly build, found here -
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=galaxysmtd
but then found this -
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/24052-cyanogenmod-7-for-the-samsung-galaxy-s-v710-rc1-26-june-2011/
Which looks almost more official, like it might be more stable, but i have no idea. there is no description on how it differs to a nightly rom.
Which one should i try? Hope you can help.
You should flash the latest nightly, but remember the Nightly #82, need a Gingerbread Bootloader to the best work

Not just any ROM, it must include the bootloader. that means the PDA-file (.tar or .tar.md5) must contain boot.bin and Sbl.bin
check the ones marked with Sbl here
I prefer this thread with bootloaders flashable to odin.

You putting your bootloader in PDA, dont tick re-partition
I want to try CM7 too but don't know whether Traditional Chinese can be displayed and edit successfully?

[Q]Cyanogenmod 7.1

should i install a froyo rom before i flash cyanogenmod 7.1???
No, cm 7.1 works better when your install base is Samsung gingerbread because of the bootloaders.
P.S. you don't need to create a topic when there is already thread for Q&A regarding CM7

The very same thread u're referring to says one needs to running rooted Eclair/Froyo Bootloader.
My question is, Do i really need to Downgrade to Froyo if I'm already on stock Gingerbread?
and also, How would we know if Gingerbread bootloader becomes "safe" in future, if ever?

No need to downgrade, GB bootloaders are safe.
In the early(er) CM7 days Froyo bootloaders were needed for CM, for the last couple of months both bootloaders are supported, and GB bootloaders are preferred because of lower batt drain.
If needed you can always go back to Froyo bootloaders using Odinn/Heimdall.

Can't find a source stating this, but i'm running CM7 with GB Bootloaders. Only risk you were running installing CM7 on GB was that your external SD-Card wouldn't be recognized, and there was a Loadscreen glitch when the phone booted.
Those issues was fixed a couple months ago, so there is no problem flashing CM7 over GB Bootloaders.

Unless Vibranturk knows how to compile kernels, he is of no use right now. Sorry, I would take a go at it, I just don't have any Linux installed right now and don't wanna DL the source to build the kernel. You have to build a modified kernel for the Phone to boot, you can try flashing Glitch after you the flash the ROM and reboot.

[Q] Getting my Note tomorrow! A few questions.

Hello lovely XDA users. Just wanted to ask a few questions about the Note. Im used to Nexus devices and the unlocking and rooting process is usually straight forward, reading up on the Note I got a bit confused lol. So how do you root it? I have read about the ICS leaks bricking phones so I will stick to GB for now, can anyone recommend a good GB ROM? Would like stock Android if possible. One more question, apart from rooting how do you get CWM Recovery on it? Thanks for your help people and I'm really looking forward to getting the Note.
There's a thread in the dev section with pre-rooted firmwares. You can flash any of these with PC Odin and you're rooted. I suggest you flash the European Open or UK version of XXLC1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
If you want to get CWM Recovery as well you need to flash the CF-Kernel for the version of the rom you flashed. So if you flashed XXLC1 you need the CF-Kernel for version LC1.
Scroll to the bottom of this post and download the file for the correct version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18978158&postcount=1
Extract that file, double click the alread-rooted.bat file and it will push all the necessary files to the Note. Once it's done your phone will reboot and you can use CWM Recovery (hold power+home+volume up untill Samsung logo pops up) to flash any rom you like.

Explained like a pro, Thank you very much. Any GB ROM you would recommend? Preferably with Stock Android although I'm guessing you can't use the S Pen apps? Might stick to Stock Touchwiz ROM although I hate it. Any kernel to recommend with a Stock ROM? Thanks for your help.
All the custom GB roms fully support the s-pen because they're all based on official Samsung firmwares, I'm not aware of any custom rom with stock Android UI at the moment. You can always use a custom launcher to at least get rid of TouchWiz. I'm using CheckRomHD V6 and installed NemusLauncher at the moment and I like it a lot. RocketRom V23 is a very nice rom as well though it's a bit of a hassle to flash as you first need to flash V22, do a wipe and then flash V23.
You can even combine custom roms and custom kernels. If you want to be able to overclock as well you can flash for example CheckRom and then flash the AbyssNote 4.2 or FM Kernel 2.0 in CWM Recovery. Or if you go for speed and good battery life you can flash SpeedMod Kernel 2-11.
Basically it's all up to you. Read the threads about the custom roms, choose a few with features you like and just try them for a while. Just keep in mind that there is a slight chance you end up in a boot loop (usually solved by doing a data/cache/Dalvik wipe in recovery) or soft-bricking and you have to start all over by flashing a pre-rooted kernel and CF-Root again, but this applies to any custom rom on any phone.
You said them firmwares are pre-rooted but on the thread it say's they are not directly rootable. ???

If yes, then CM9 probably is not the right thing for you. It is devoid of all the
Samsung crapware, plus you don't get native S-Pen Samsung support. This
means no SMemo and similar stuff; you have to use different apps from the
Market instead.
OTOH, if you want a lean, smooth and fast Rom, and are not afraid to do some
tinkering, then CM9 would be ideal for you.

1. CM9 is here.
2. No optional kernels for now, because it contains the only safe ICS kernel ATM
3. No OC either, but you won't be needing it - the kernel is very fast as it is. In
fact, I keep mine at 1.2Ghz. It feels just as quick, and it's somewhat easier on
the battery.
