Going from JI6 to cognition - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I've been running the JI6 leak since shortly after it was leaked, but I'm getting tired of waiting for an official froyo release, so I'm planning on flashing Cognition.
Now, as I understand it, my only path from JI6, is flashing back to JF6, re-rooting, installing ROM-Manager/Clockwork, and flashing the latest cognition ROM?
I've seen references to an ODIN flashable version of the cognition (on their wiki), but it doesn't seem to be available/packaged for download anywhere.
Thanks Guys...

Most ruins have moved away from odin packages. What you listed above will get you were you want to go

The recent froyo build is labelled as jpx or jpy, there's a couple roms based on that build in the dev section. I'd skip cognition since its based on an 2 month old build.

I made a ROM Flashing video for questions just like this. Check it out at this thread...

Can anyone pm me a froyo captivate dump.

Hi I have made a rom for the i9000 called ULTIMATE. look at my threads and you will find it, I was wondering if captivate users will also like it, if so pm me a clockwork dump of a froyo rom. Basically do a nandroid backup of your phone, then connect your phone to your PC and in your SD card, go to clockwork>backup. There will be a folder with today's or whenever's date and pm me cache.img and system.img inside that folder. Have a good day

No such thing, only the i9000 has the official jpx froyo.
Yeah. Almost all our roms are based off you guy's source with reoriented kernels.

Hey that's awesome of you man. I hope ur can cook something up for us once... we finally get froyo. Thanks.

I think the Cognition roms are built on the JI6 which is a Captivate rom.
Not certain though.
Both the JI6 and JJ4 based roms are for the Captivate. Neither one uses a reorient kernel.
he's not asking for a froyo source; he's asking for a froyo dump. this includes JI6 and JJ4. I'd do it myself but I'm not at a computer :/

No one is going to "upgrade" to an old/slow/beta build of froyo when the official 2.2.1 jpx build is out for the i9000.
I certainly wouldn't use a captivate rom. I was thrilled when the reorient kernels made it possible to use the i9000 roms and totally get away from the att crap

I think most of us would rather have your ultimate rom customized for the captivate but still an i9000 rom. similar to what doc has done for us and what some of the other devs have done around here with the i9000 roms

Sure. Or use setiron or xcaliburinhand's kernels

just like nobody is using cognition that is built completely on JJ4? that thread still gets a few pages of posts every day. even if it is an old beta build, it's still fast.

Have you tried jpx? Its smoother and faster than any previous froyo build and i'm not even running a lagfix, still running on rfs, try doing that on jj4.
I urge you to try it, you will not believe how fast it runs, plus the browser is gpu accelerated in 2.2.1 pages scroll as smooth as butter, goto www.anandtech.com right now on your jj4 build and see how badly it lags even with flash disabled.
Don't hold your phone back with a 2 month old build, getting jpx to run our phones is pretty simple you just need to add a kernel/modem/sdcard fix, but if webstar1 packages all up in one zip it'll be even simpler.
webstar1: after adding either xcal's or setiron's kernel, add either the jk4 or jl3 modem and hardcore's sdcard fix then it'll work perfectly on the captivates.
+1 for the 2.2.1 usage. These roms are blazing w/o lagfix. The browser is just a pleasure to use.

i'm not on JJ4, nor have I been in a very long time. my only point is, and has been since I first posted in this thread, that it's not a dead build.
I just went back to the optimized JJ4 rom on my phone (from Cyanogenmod Beta 4 nightly). I've been on Perception and Cognition. While I haven't tried the 2.2.1 rom, I am perfectly happy with using an "old" outdated rom that was designed for my phone as every I9000 rom that I have tried otherwise has had some sort of little caveat that made it less desirable for me.
Maybe I just haven't tried the right roms, but I can't be the only one who would rather use a rom either designed from a Captivate rom or AOSP.

[Q] Rooted and applied One-Click Lag Fix, what's next?

Okay, so I've done rooting my Cappy with ECLAIR.UCJH7 update. I've also done with the lag fix from the Market. Now, what I want is to flash a new Rom. I'm somehow caught up in the middle of Cognition and Perception, I don't know which one do I use. Can you help me out? And if possible, steps on how to apply/flash it. Do I need to restore my phone to default? Thanks and sorry for too many questions.
first thing you do is get rid of that oclf. It uses a dangerous method to make the phone APPEAR faster in a quadrant test...without ANY real world improvement. Cognition is the most popular, closest to stock build. check it out here. My preference is the leaked froyo with a few tweaks heres a look at cognition http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532

So you would recommend Cognition instead of Perception? I've read somewhere that there are lots of bug on the cognition. You think I should remove the lag fix?

Ryans oclf=REMOVE NOW! The latest version (2.3 beta 8) of cognition Is built using a kernel as close to stock as possible as i understand. It also comes with the voodoo lag fix. Voodoo is a legitimate file system restructure that produces elevated quadrant scores AND real world results http://project-voodoo.org/lagfix this comes with the latest version of cognition in the link i sent you

Correct. Bluetooth will NOT work. Its recommended to flash back to stock..although im not sure if its required in your case...this may help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364

[Q] Where to now?

Ok so 2.2 offically came out for captivate today.
I know There is Cog 3.03v which I am running.
Cog 4 came out like 2 days ago.
And I don't have any clue when a Stable rom is coming out for 2.3 Gingerbread.
I am probably going to flash stock (thats odin right?) tonight.. then go to Cog 4 tonight.
I am not really interested in gingerbread theme's so much as the actual changes.
Can anyone break down why cog 4 is an entirely different rom than 3.03v?
My understanding is its a modified version of the stock at&t froyo although I could be wrong.. So I am guessing 3.03v is a ported version of froyo from some similar phone.
Any idea what is going to give best over all performance?
I would like to think 2.3 gingerbread is coming out soon in the form of a rom.. but, I am also not holding my breath.
Advice would be appreciated.

You could easily answer this question yourself by reading the first couple posts in those two rom's respective threads.

I read first 3 or 4 post on each one.
Neither of them answered what I wanted them to.

as stated in the cog 4 thread:
its based on the newest 2.2 build UCKB1
its the official release we got today
cog 3.04 is based on the 2.2 build JL1 from CANADA, rogers captivate

[Q] suggest me a rom please

im from fascinate.. my roommate has a captivate and would like to get a rom and voodoo.. i would like to get him a super-clean rom, that everything works on. that you have source code to (meaning i can use custom kernels like voodoo) preferably zip aligned and deodexed. im running dj05 sc.9 on my fascinate, and would like something comparable.. if you have froyo source, froyo would be preferred.
thanks in advance. i appreciate any and all help.
Try dilligaf's 7.x. Link in my signature
You can't really go wrong with the newest versions of Cognition or Serendipity either. I was on Cog 4 then flashed Serendipity 6.2. Both are are very stable.
Any of the more popular roms should meet your criteria.
Is it just me or have there been an abundance of "what rom?" threads lately?
Agreed. Less reading, and more cbf'd people.
My vote is for FireFly. I have yet to have any issues and when there is an issue X is quick to get a fix out.
Sre with ryan za olcf
CM7
this link should give you a run down on everything current

And tell your roomate to flash his own rom that way you won't have to flash for him every other day

[Q] froyo to gingerbread on captivate

I rooted my phone sometime back and upgraded from eclair to froyo 2.2 (not at&t's froyo)
I have a 3 part question:
My question is do I have to flash back to eclair in order to install gingerbread? Or can I go from the version of froyo I have to gingerbread?
My last question is what is the best version of gingerbread out there?
The best answer is Read on the dev site the different GB roms. You have to choose from "leaked" stock KF1 (2.3.3), "leaked" stock KH3 (2.3.4), a few roms based out of KF1 and KH3, a ton of I9000 ports. Up to you to choose. Id stick to native Ginger bread like KF1 or KH3. You need to flash Gingerbread bootloaders though, and that carries risk. Check out all the Dev threads about them.
To answer the first question.... You definitely don't have to go as far back as Eclair; it is just preferred to start from a stock ROM. I personally always return to stock KB1 if I'm going to flash a Froyo custom ROM, or use KF1 for Gingerbread. I've never used AOSP, so I can't speak to those.
Also, remember that newer Captivate models will not boot if you try to flash Eclair. I made that mistake the first time I ever tried to flash a custom ROM.
Finally, be sure to pay attention to what boot loaders the particular ROM you want to use asks for, as that will affect what exact sequence/technique you use to flash. I definitely recommend Heimdall because of the level of control you have over what parts you want to flash.
Just to add my two cents: If you are Windows 7 x64 and using Odin, make sure you use XP Service pack 2 compatiblity mode, this also makes you use admin mode with it (the most important thing).

Why stick with native gingerbread? No hspa, no kernel source for sound/color enhancement.
Ported froyo roms were more popular and feature ridden at first for this exact reason. and there are still not many kb1 roms because the time that came around I9000 ports were way more complete.
Same holds true. Native builds will always be playing catch up.

That is only true for a particular build of eclair, jf6 the firmware contained in odin one click. There are other builds of eclair that will work on newer phones...
HSUPA support isn't important to me. I rarely use ATT's network since 90% of the time im near WIFI. I do miss Voodoo color fix, but thats about it. Ive used other I9000 ports and all of them seem to get funky after a while. Native builds don't. BUT like I said BEST answer was for him to read and choose from the DEV section. What some roms have that I like doesn't mean other people do. There is no "best" rom, its a matter of choice.
Edit: Remembered something else i do miss, BLN =/

Thank you all very useful info.
But now I have 1 more question. I am running windows 7 partitioned on my Macbook Pro. I keep getting this error when using ODIN. "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application."
Is there a way I can just do this on the Mac side? I haven't been able to look this up but I think the error has something to do with .NET framework I believe I have 4.0 not sure if I need to install all versions?

Odin does not use .NET, so that's not the problem. (The icon is a dead giveaway that it uses MFC.)
