This is probably stupid question but.... I rooted my hero today and flashed a Rom to it, do I need to flash a kernel? If so then whaT is the best kernel to use? Thanks in advance.

The stock kernel is fine unless you want to overclock. If you want to Overclock you want ToastCFC's godmode kernel.
Thanks man I really appreciate it. Is the speed noticeBly better when overclocking? and I'm running damages 2.09.1, what should I overclock to for best performance? I'm sorry for being such a newb

the 0711 build plays very nicely with ov kernels, but thats it. any cm6 after 0711 will loop with ANY hydra kernel.

I don't know if there is one yet, I don't think there is on here, at least with all the ones currently out. I'm bored, so I'm making one so people can easily see all the Kernels available. I'll TRY to keep this updated as new dev's release new kernels. Might be kinda tough though, but I'll try.
Anyways, here's a list of all the kernels (as far as I can find on this site) as of 12/9/2010. If I missed any, please PM me and I'll get it added.

Nice thanks I've been thinking one of these was needed.

You seem to have them all covered. I've been waiting for a consolidated kernel thread, I mean we had one for radios, and theres only like 5 of those lol... Anyways, thanks for the convenience.
Sent from my Droid Incredible running Myn's Warm Two Point Two RLS4.
Thank you so much... Having these all in one easily attainable thread is extremely helpful. Thank you again!
Very nice.
Finally!
Loving Hydra on my DInc
Rad. Nice work.
good idea, this should be stickied!
linked to it in the wiki so if it does get buried we can find it
no problem guys!
I had major instability with KingxKernal #5, had to switch back via Nandroid... anyone know a good, stable kernal?

try incredikernel for sense roms or ziggy's new one. they are both excellent kernel devs.
I'm running invisiblek's AOSP kernels, with good results.

Should I have wiped anything before flashing the kernel? I didn't see anything anywhere about that.

Are there any over-volted kernels? I want to run 1.15ghz...

I usually wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Great list. Thanks for setting this all up. I agree that we needed one of these.
Will wiping my cache/dalvik do anything for me now? Or should I flash a Nandroid, then wipe and flash the kernel again?

Probably won't do much for you now, since you don't seem to be experiencing any negative side effects, but it's good practice for future reference.

I'm looking for a kernal for cog4 that won't kill my battery or freeze my phone (sadly the new suckerpunch is a no-go). I'm testing the firebird v2.10 I had with cog v3.04, but idk about speed and battery life. Also has no OC option.
Sent from your girlfriend's Captivate
I'm using suckerpunch #54 without a problem. Have you tried paragon?

Well on the kernel page it should say if the kernel will work for 2.x or 2.2.1 roms
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Its based off of speedmod, will work with both 2.2 and 2.2.1 captivate roms. I'm thinking the overclock made it freeze up, which is unfortunate because I'm looking for a bit of stable OC
Sent from your girlfriend's Captivate
The only OC kernels I saw out there were i9000 series. Wonder if some true Captivate based kernels will show up.
A lot of conflicting info here and on rootzwiki.com. I just was asked by the play and trade guy to flash his captivate. All in trade for his pandoras battery and knowledge of its use. Basically fix my psp and I flash his phone. Ok I just want cm7 stable on here with a good oc kernel. Can I do like a mesmerize and odin flash a recovery and the. Flash cm7 and gapps reboot and do a kernel? What steps do I need to take. I see a lot about bricks in the captivate threads, are they easy to break? I'm told this o e is two years old. That would mean its probably ok with being able to get I to dl mode easy yeah?
Like I said alotta info floating around I just wanna do this right can a cm7 user break this down for me. It's an at&t phone if that matters.
Thanks in advance.

CM7 stable comes with an OC kernel. Just Odin in a kernel with CWM on it, then flash the CM7 zip.
Got a link to the right kernel to odin?

Flash the Glitch kernel as it OC's up to 1.7 ghz though I wouldn't recommend it.

I would say the Captivate is actually very difficult to brick, and going to CM7 has basically a 0% chance of a hard brick. As Aus_Azn points out, CM7 will overclock with the default kernal.
