Cool. So I picked up the HD7 this AM here in NYC. All my contacts, emails and calendar imported from Google with no problem. Putting some music and photos on and I downloaded the Facebook App from the Marketplace. So far so good...lets see in a couple of hours.
Picked mine up as well so far it is great. Exchange came in with mail, contacts, and calendar just fine.
me too
got mine too, i'm liking it so far.
had to tweak the outlook setup because of a university email (off site exchange server), but downloaded everything pretty fast.
Just a note. If you have a contact whos mobile number is listed as a home phone it wont show up under messaging or allow you to SMS that person. You have to change it. I didnt have to do that in Android.
Got mine today as well. LOVE IT!!!!!
I gotta say, Android does not do this processor any justice... I knew it was smooth by reading reviews but this thing blew me away from the first swipe... Even the iPhone has to work hard to keep up
I know it has limitations and I'm not gonna dismiss them as not needed like a lot of people do... All I'm saying is that im willing to grow with the platform and enjoying every minute of it
yeah.. this device is ridiculously fast..
it makes my galaxy S feel slow and I know the hardware isn't as good in this phone as it is in that one..
Yep, ordered mine today. Hopefully (since I payed for express shipping) it should be here tomorrow. Can't wait! Glad to hear all the good stuff about it as there have been many haters talking about how bland it looked and nit pick the things it doesn't have yet.
I picked mine up today as well. The only things I am missing from the Nexus One are an XDA app, an Engadget app, and Swype.
I'm sure these apps will come in time.
so i went to play with one at my t mobile store and all they had was the dummy unit! Wasn't this supposed to launch today!?
Terrible launch IMHO.

Why are you calling it a terrible launch some stores don't have the unit. you should have gone to another tmobile store to check it out and a lot of 3rd party retailers have the demo as well.
you just do not wanted to put in enough effort to research and blame the whole world for it
My t-mobile store had one on saturday that people could look at..
Looks like your store is fail..
The T-Mobile store I went to on Saturday when I went to pick up my HD7 had a live demo. I got to play with it while the rep activated my phone. They were all pretty excited about the phone too, surprisingly.
Well...phone will not sync with Zune. Sucks really. I will keep trying but it doesnt look like its going to work. I drag music to the phone icon and its says syncing on the phone...but nope..nothing is there....even if i click summary in zune and hit sync it says its doing it but its a no go. Hmm.
Drag it into your collection first.then right.click and add it to the HD7.

Picked mine up today. Love it. Coming from Android.
Im having a hard time between HD7 and MyTouch 4G. Let put android and window phone 7 aside, which phone is better?

Spec wise the MT4G wins hands down. Faster CPU/GPU, More RAM and HSPA+. I was in a similar situation but then opted to go for the HD7 simply because I am interested in the OS. Hoping it's better than the Android and iOS. Also hoping in the next update we get flash capability or Silverlight/html 5.
I absolutely love it! Granted I've only had it 2 hours. Stuck to hand.

I recently reacquired my g1 (it was on loan to my mother, who got a new mytouch 4g for christmas, since I bought my n1 in january.)
I just updated it to cyan 6.1, it won't have a data plan, but what should I do with it?
remote for my ubuntu desktop?
connect it to a weather balloon and try to get pictures from low orbit?
I need ideas, y'all got any?
Im in the same position here not even sure if its worth selling.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Same here. Keeping it as a back-up in case my G2 fails, but I might use it to pick up some JTAG skills.
You could always sell it to me cheap, I need a second g1 for devving on as mine is no bloody use as a phone cause I'm always flashing something or other
unfortunately it's not for sale, plus the shipping across the atlantic would probably cost as much as you'd be willing to pay for it.
Plus I want to do something fun with it, since it is my first smartphone...
I'm considering using it for a test bed of what can and can't be done, with out a data plan, with google voice/skype, and so forth...
I'm keeping mine forever it will be like an antique the grand Dady of all android phones ;-)

using it as a ps3 hacking device or just as huge memory stick
Travel phone for wifi calling and gps related stuff.
use it as an mp3 player, an ipod touch alternative
ull have froyo, games, music, videos, wifi etc..just no calls
well i successfully got it set up for google voice calls over wifi with out a sim card, which is pretty sweet.
Keep the ideas coming, I like the ideas.
Use it as a paperwieght , well... nevermind, thats what the iPhone is for...
RemoteControl for XBMC
I too have an old G-1 that I am no longer using. I would like to give it to one of my kids to play movies on as well as games and music. Do I have to root it to get around the lack of a sim card to make it functional? Any help here would be appreciated!! I have rooted and flashed Roms on Samsung Vibrant but have limited experience. Thanks in advance for any help!
I have 2 g1 but one have with signals and slide so I use it for testing new roms themes and all experiments
I am also tring to costomize my own rom so get useful there
U can also do same

Gave up on this phone and now turned it into a Voip phone. Now just gotta figure out how to keep wifi running.
As a follow up I've set my old g1 up with sipdroid and google voice for free wifi calling and texts.
I also set it up with a combo of ip cam view and webkey so that it can be used as a webcam over a wifi area.
It's a couple of cool things honestly, really love the proof of concept feeling about them, even if I don't use them.
I'm willing to try out other ideas. =P
I love you guys getting upgrades. I have bought 3 G1's in the past few months $45-80 was the range of the 3 I bought. I am running GingerYoshi on them all Sparks 1.6.4 before that. can use on wifi with skype and no sim card. Post em on your local Craigslist. For broke people like myself
unfortunately I can't sell it. It's a museum piece for me
Load GingerYoshi1.0rc3 and voip its running smooth
Have a bunch of different nandroid backups saved.
One with an iPhone layout, another with the Windows 7.
Then when one of your friends gets a new phone, rub it in their face that yours can do everything there's can times 3.
I got an iPhone 3G in November of 2009 (On contract) and last September I got my SGS (New off of Craigslist). I keep seeing these new and better phones coming out in the near future and I am saying to myself.
"Self, you want one of those phones".
Examples of said phones:
Galaxy S 2
i997 Infuse 4G
Optimus X2
Optimus Black
Anyway, do you get the newest thing out there or do you stick with one phone for a while?
$500-$700 is a lot to spend on a phone every year, but I love the newest gadget
If it works and does what i want then every ten years or so .
jje
for me, it is every time there is something better for my carrier 1700+2100 AWS, which usually there are not many
I usually hold as much as I can, usually it's 2 to 3 years so I can have the contracts promo's and rebates.
My last one was the good ol' HTC Vogue. Even tough HTC wasn't supporting the device since a while, XDA Devs was and I was running latest android built on it.
Since the popularity of the SGS is pretty more than the HTC Vogue, I assume we'll get amazing support from the comunity also! So I don't think I'll change until another year or two!
I must be sick or something. My SGS works great (Stock JL2, no lag fix, no custom kernel, only rooted). But I still have this little thing about wanting the newest and best.
What will the new Galaxy S2 (Or any listed phone in the OP) have that my SGS doesn't? 4.5" screen, faster CPU (By only a small bit), more MP camera, a flash? Do I really need these things?
Maybe it's a disease or something. Why can't I be happy with what I have? Maybe a woman would help? Anyone know one available?

The phone revolution has finally come to the U.S. so things will have to change...
Before all phones were crappy so it didn't really matter...now every 6 months a phone that was once new will be old news and the new ones will be must haves...
This has been the case in europe for years and so service providers can't force customers into 2 year contracts like here...most contracts are 12 months(and you can upgrade to a new phone practically free in 10mnths) and just to get people into 18 month contracts they have to offer great incentives...hopefully that will become the case here..
But to get to the point..with phones finally getting better you do feel the need to upgrade all the time...don't get carried away...think of it like with a new tv..new ones..bigger ones, faster response time, more color,3d, internet apps, usb ports...they keep adding stuff making you want the latest and the greatest...you don't need it..you want it...but don't need it...
See what your phone has..how you use it and evaluate of it meets your needs...granted now you are using it for a lot more stuff than before...gps, internet searches, facebook updates etc...suit down and think what you use your phone and if it lacks in any department...make a note of all the areas where you would like improvement and then start researching which phone would cover those specified areas..don't get carried away by features that seem cool but once you have them you will not use...(video calling for example..it is a phase..just like it was in europe and it went away fast..not everyone has it here..its not cross platform...ie pc to phone...and it telies on spotty 4g coverage or wifi..). Once you know what you need and find which phone had that...get that phone and stick with it...
I bought the g1 when it came out because I knew I would love android..I was right..after having it for almost two years I found that it was lacking speed due to cpu and lack of memory for installed apps...granted I was using apps2sd to over come its issues but this was a bypass got an issue that was there...i researched and found that the vibrant had exactly what I needed..1ghz cpu and 16gb internal memory for apps and storage...i was right..with nero v5 rom on it and an 8gb card it is amazingly fast and it does EVERYTHING I need...i don't need anything now for a long time...i want the new stuff..i don't need them...now I will wait for a phone that comes with honeycomb and performs well with it...it will be at least 6 to 8 months before I see something worth investigating which will be near my upgrade time so I don't have to spend too much money to get it (i got the vibrant for 99 bucks through amazon wireless with a2yr contact...)
Patience, good research and will power are all key...

"Wish in one hand, **** in the other. See which one gets filled first."
Lol, wish I had every new one that came out
But I renew my phone once every 2 years.
@Ian/w98seng, nope it doesn't change much with a woman around either!
I have a Nokia 6120 Classic right now from 2007 I think , but I LOVE SGS. Hope to get one as soon as possible with a contract. I didn't know about SGS 2, which is nice
Either when something better comes out or when O2 offer me an upgrade
Pretty much only upgrade when my existing contract expires and I get a discount on a new phone
OK, I'll be patient and wait a couple of yeas before I get another phone. It'll be hard and I'll cry a lot, but I'll be a good boy and wait. (Maybe)
you know you can SELL the phone, and upgrade to another phone....
that's what most people do to keep up with the latest and greatest
sell it meanwhile it stills hot (6 month to a year)
then upgrade to the next phone will not be as painful
it's like leasing a phone
you pay a $100 give or take every 6 mth to get a better phone
My job allows me to change the phone every year and I think its an ideal duration to play around, fiddle and poke around in a phone, especially when my company pays for it But exceptionally, Galaxy S keeps surprising me every now and then keeps me busy. Its like a woman, once you conquer it you will get over with it and get bored of it BUT not yet!! Unlike iPhone 3GS where I was looking to move on after 4-5 months.

Wait until your plan allows you to upgrade at low cost (usually after 18mnths on t-mobile) and go for a phone that had honeycomb and decent hardware to run it...I'm thinking 6-8 months from now there will be enough info on the models that are out to make an educated purchase..

The current rumor on the sgs2 is 1.2 ghz cpu, 8mp camera with lcd flash, capacitive touch screen,2.3 gb on it, fm radio with rds, hdmi output, 16gb memory,ffc....
if you have have the current vibrant I suggest trying nero v5 with voodoo lag fix.. ka5 with proper flash support...it will completely changer your phone experience...trust me...make a nandroid so you can give it a try and if you don't like it...restore...it feels like a new phone...search for sbg.v2.4 from jdan as well and that will make it even better...

I have an Ipad1, a Nook Color and an Evo 4g (both cm7) and if my wife told me I could only keep one it'd be the Nook Color (she would never do such a thing in her right mind). Its snappier, perfect size, easier to get ANYTHING on it, I can't stand iTunes and my ipad is jailbroken themed as gingerbread android. I actually have my ipad on craigslist for a trade and cash for a Xoom, hoping some apple nut got a Xoom from one of his rich aunts or something. Don't get me wrong I love my Evo 4g.... I think there's more custom Roms for that phone then any other phone but...... my Nook goes EVERYWHERE with me now. I own a restaurant and am the Executive Chef and I'm constantly grabbing my NC, whether it be for listening to Howard Stern, Facebook, inventory, recipes etc. The only problem I'm having is finding a decent movie player for my NC (I use Vplayer no and meh). Just my 2cent for the morning in case anyone is on the fence about what 7" tablet to get. And for the camera and GPS I always have my phone in my pocket (back pocket not front, I don't want ball cancer). Honestly the ONLY thing I use my ipad for is Netflix and when that comes to Android I wont touch it. Hope that all made sense, I'm typing this with my morning coffee. If anyone disagrees with anything I've said speak up.
Thanks,
Dave
The speakers on the NC are a bit of a bummer and Im running a kernel that boosts the sound but still pretty low.

I've got an NC and an EVO 4G also. Nice combination. I don't think I'd want to give either up. Actually, it's pretty remarkable how much like a mini NC the Evo is. The other day I went to Las Vegas and the hotel wanted to charge $12.00 a day for wireless. Yet, I was getting excellent 4G reception on my Evo, so there was no point. I don't have a tethering plan, though, so I used teh Evo to surf and keep up with e-mail. It's a shame cell companies try to charge an additional $20-30 for your phone's wireless hotspot feature (I know I could get it for free by rooting, but I'm not ready to travel down that path just yet).
Funny you say that. I keep my Evo next to my NC all day at the restaurant (faldonis.com gotta plug my biz) and keep it tethered the whole time (hope sprint doesn't catch on) and its snappy as hell. I've had my NC for 2 weeks and haven't picked up my ipad since, battery might be dead Idk. I'm serious when I say when Netflix comes to Android I will never touch my ipad and probably give it to my kids if I don't find a rich apple lover on çraigslist with a Xoom.

you should do your good deed for the day and send me your ipad for free
If you are looking for a good movie player, try Mobo Player with the Arm7 Neon codec pack (which it should grab automatically for you. Given that it is good enough to decode some of the 720p movie trailers out there, i think it will fit your bill.
I'm still having problems playing some movies with mono and the addons. I'm downloading them as mp4 ...... is that the correct format or is there another way I should be downloading the movies? @beezy - I would give it to ya if my 3 year old daughter wouldn't woop my ass.

Soemthing to try - press and hold on the file you want to play, and select the software decoding, to see if that helps.
It(Nook) really is great. The Nook forums are a bit more crazy than the G2 forums but I managed to get phiremod going nonetheless.
Yeah, I am really glad I got the Nook!

This is the samething thing that is happening with me. I got an ipad, nookie, and my captivate. And ever since i got the NC i take it everywhere i go and the great thing is that since the captivate is an android i can tether with no problem (unlimited data) without running the risk of getting the letter from at&t saying to stop tethering. My brother has an iphone 4 and we tether the same amount of time and he got the letter to stop. I think only iphones can be detected of such use. Anyways, the only problem is that the captivate has a super bad gps and is pretty much worthless for that, but im in the process of getting the Inspire. Aside from that, the Nook Color is awesome! Just a few days a go i went to a restaurant and as i waited to be seated i booted HC from SD card and the manager asked me if it was the Galaxy Tab cus they're almost the same size and as soon i told him it was a NC he was amazed by its capabilities. Makes me proud to own one!

I don't seem to notice any adverse effects of low RAM, but this is my first Android phone so I have nothing to compare to. Its amazing how much RAM some of this bloatware uses, but it still runs pretty fast. Can't wait to see how much this thing flies when its rooted.

But coming from iOS the major difference is that Google has no interest in controlling how you use your device, as far as they care you are free to do anything with it. Moto and Verizon care a little, but it's still not locked down as tight as the iPhone, especially in the App Market.

Even unrooted Android is still a lot more open than iOS. For example you can install a SNES emulator, supply your own ROMs and you're instantly playing the classics. On iOS this will require a jailbreak, easy to do, but it voids your warranty. You can pretty much install what you want from an apk file even if the app isn't in the marketplace.
Android has the advantage of being spread across a wide variety of devices. Its not a one device fits all market. Some like a physical keyboard like the Droid 3, some want a larger screen and could care less about a physical keyboard like the Droid X2, etc.
The main thing is that the iphone has more control over the apps it runs. For example, on android you can close an app and 10 minutes later its back open, whereas the iphone wont do this.
edit: you can get apps that can help with this, like advanced task killer set to highest level
also, the appstore is all meant for the iphone whereas some of the apps in the market are splintered, with some not being able to work because of hardware differences. it doesnt always happen that often, but when it does its like heartbreak.
Android is the new windows vista, bro.
If you can live with those two things, the experience is far superior and you will like how everything works vs an apple product. plus, you wont have to be a hipster//macfag anymore
Lol I've been using android for over a year. I know how it works haha. Just that I was using an iphone for a while so I was wondering if anything interesting happend during my absence
