In the quest for the ultimate device, CM gets pretty close. A bunch of people on the CM forums are chiming in with donations for working TV-out for the Incredible, and I wanted to cross-post it here to hopefully garner some more attention and interest.
The goal here is to have working TV out without compromising any other main functionality (like Bluetooth on Sense ROMs).
Not sure if it's possible at all, but if I can attach my phone to my TV and play SNES with my kids using Wiimotes, I will chip in my $20 bucks, and a bunch of other people will too.
The donation count was up to 160 bucks on CM forums as of the time of this post, and I have 3 friends that will chip in as well.
If it happened, I'd donate. CM already deserves donations, but this would up the amount for sure.
Dude thats sick you can get SNES games on the Incredible than (if) this gets fixed hook it to the TV and play it on the TV using wiimotes... can you use xbox remotes instead, you say that it can be done on sense but you loose bluetooth, so can I hook it to the tv on sense and use a wiimote? or xbox remote if works cos thats what i have lol
i'd chip in if that happens (and before i jump ship and get an Incredible HD lol), absolutely

I'm pretty sure tv out works on other (sense-less) roms, it's just a cyanogenmod issue. Use a different rom & it should work. I know nothing about video game systems past the ps1, so does the xbox 360 have bluetooth controllers? If it does, there should be an app on the market for it.

The Xbox 360 controllers work via radio, not bluetooth. Just an FYI.

Why not just get SNES9x for PC and hook up your pc to the tv via HDMI, use a bluetooth dongle to connect the wiimote to the pc for a controller and there you go. Thats what I do

thats what i do too, the bluetooth dongle was $2 on amazon and everything else was already in place for me.
I would also chip in $20! It is the only thing that I really miss of HTC Sense.
Bluetooth is required to connect the Wiimote to the phone. The Bluetooth stack on sense roms is a piece of crap and doesn't allow modern protocols.
As for the computer thing, I want to be able to do this in the car, at a friends, or anywhere that doesn't involve lugging around a computer. That's why I have a smartphone.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
From what I read they had to reverse engineer the entire HDMI stack to get HDMI working on the EVO -- I'm guessing they'd have to do the same to get TV-OUT working on the the DInc? Heh... or we could all save up cuz the DInc HD is alleged to be "revealed" on Jan 6th. A device that basically looks like a VzW EVO. ;P
But seriously... I'd give it a go and even help if we had source code. But I don't think you get source code when you reverse engineer...
+1 on this. There's got to be some way to get both bluetooth and TV out functioning on the same rom. The wiimote+tv out idea is pretty much the reason I got the incredible when it came out, only to discover that its now been nearly a year with no solution to this!
I may have to buy a TV-out cable and see if I can get some extra money! LOL!
Go for it!!! (connect 4!!)
I will throw $50 into the pot for whoever gets this working. I know Netflix is not here yet, but I got the DInc so that once it did, I could stream to my TVs, specifically the one in my car.

This donation to make a rom/tweak **** is getting insane. As far as Netflix, they say Android is too insecure of a platform, however a new phone that was just showcased had a NetFlix app icon on the homescreen. Hmmmm.....

I dunno if it's insane so much as it is a small minority of people realizing what it's gonna take to motivate those with the skill to solve the issue. Realistically, I'd bet thousands of people have an incredible in their pockets and don't even know it can do TV out, and will never try even if you told them. Verizon certainly doesn't make much noise about the feature!
And even those of us that are savvy enough to know, might never use it enough to care. How many of us are running CM6.1 right now without feeling any loss of function? Dare I say, enough people that the entire process of making CM run on an incredible went through to the point of being called "stable" without even a hint of that feature being available. I know Im running it....even though I want TV out real bad.
Theres so little steam for this, that unless we can literally "fund" the R&D to make it happen ourselves, it might just disappear as newer phones come out and development stops on the older ones. I remember in april last year being amazed that I had a phone that ran @ 1GHz. I mean, seriously. One [email protected]#$^$& gigahertz. And now, we're *****ing about the thunderbolt because it doesn't have dual cores in it! I can't recall a single year in phones where these kinds of leaps and bounds have been so constant.
The whole world of software is a strange parallel to the music industry, wherein it used to be a giant divide between "local band" and "warner bros gold record". Then we had the internet, and an entire underground revolution took place where artists on the ground level could again get their music to the masses, and since most of the middlemen were removed, it again became possible for the idea of a "modest" living on music to be made. The 10 bucks that someone pays for a vynal is going mostly to the artist, where the 25 you'd spend on a major CD might reach the artist as only 2 dollars. The artist wins, the listeners win, and the same kids who were "sticking it to the man" by downloading major releases turn around and trumpet the virtues of "support your favorite bands!!"
This whole world of phone tweaking is almost like that - for years we were lucky if a company made an app for something, and if they didn't, well, a lot of times it didn't get made. Sure, some people developed for WM, but based strictly on popularity of the platform, I couldn't do half of what I can with my android, even though there isn't a huge difference in hardware. It was also much more difficult to find the guys who made these programs - some of them were made in the 90's and just stayed part of the WM continuum for years after they should have been replaced.
Now we have a whole community based on this android os, and it feels like a lot of the middleman has been cut out of the equation - the "audience" can directly reach the "artist", and through that direct connection, can much more easily justify paying for the efforts made. It's hard to pay 60 bucks for a windows mobile app for GPS, for example, knowing that the developer at the end will see only a few cents of that. But when the price on the google market is only 5 bucks for an app, and you know a large percentage of that is going directly to the guy who put in his time and effort to make the program, it's much easier to swallow that.
When someone writes a program, Torque is a great example, that helps me, I'm willing to give the DEV some funding for it, just like I'm willing to pay for tickets to see a local show.
It's a sort of "golden age of software" that I think many have been waiting for, almost as if we get the virtues of "mom and pop shop" service, with the Walmart pricing we've come to depend on as a society.
Hell, I paid 15 bucks for the cable to make TV out function. After what I've paid for accessories for this phone, and considering I intend to keep it till t breaks, I'm certainly willing to contribute to the guy who finally gets the TV out running like it should. If I was a capable software dev, I'd do it myself. But, I'm not. I am however a mechanic, computer systems admin, musician, live sound engineer, and multitude of other things. And when someone asks for me to solve an issue in one of those areas, well, it's certainly nice to make a little scratch on it!
Sorry about the long rant, I'm drunk. And feverishly hoping someone makes this happen! Last trip I took was 12k miles of driving with no real map, in an overheating van, forgot the CD book at home, with a bunch of guys in the back begging for internet access, and we never ever had a hotel lined up before arriving at a destination. And my phone helped solve 100% of these problems, over and over again. Now if only I could get street fighter on the hotel TV from my phone (and hand a wii controller to my opponent), I could die a happy man!
Nothing but real talk man ^

I going to buy a new game console for my son's birthday. He wants a 360, but when I looked at the PS3, it seems to be a better buy.
There are several "cons" about the 360 that make me think the PS3 is a better buy.
No built in power supply
No HD movie support (Blu Ray)
No built in wireless
You have to pay for online gaming?
Ring of death?
Noisy operation?
No bluetooth (but do you need it?)
Are just some things that make me question purchasing it over a PS3.
This old fart needs some young gamers advise.
Why don't you just buy him a new high tech computer? It's much better and the games that are for xbox are mostly also for PC and you can play and connect to xbox players via windows live or something like that. I saw in gizmodo lol. But A computer is a much better buy. But from what you say,
Xbox 360:
Better gaming
Better controls
Better online play
PS3:
Better graphics
Tilt control (no one really uses it lol)
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth
Can fit a regualar drive into it
PC:
ALL OF THE ABOVE
I got him a laptop 2 birthdays ago, but I doubt it has the horse power to run any games he wants.
I think his motivation for a XBox is the game Halo. He has several friends playing that game.
[Retracted by author due to the degrading quality of this thread]
PS3 has a brighter future then 360 and in about a year will be the dominating system
Take it from me I have all 3 current system and I play my ps3 90% of the time
I have all three and use the PS3 about 85% of the time. I even let my xbox live run out bc I just dont use it much anymore. I have started to play the WII a little more. Plus blue rays are awesome on my 47 and 63 inch 1080p tvs!

To get a PC that would be on par with the PS3 or even the 360 would be very expensive, much more that either console costs.
The games argument is a bit out dated. True exclusives are becoming more and more rare, most are just temporary. The 360 got FFXII and PS3 is getting Bioshock, though some titles won't move like Halo and Metal Gear.
On the hardware side, the PS3 can do more (bluray, linux, web browser, bluetooh, wi-fi) out of the box without hacking or other accessories.
For online play, the 360 has more people that play online. It's been building that user base for two console generations. The PS3 is just getting started with that.
I have a PS3, have one friend with a 360 and another with both. In the end it comes down to what you want to do with the console. If your son has a lot of friends with 360s that play each other a lot, he may feel left out with a PS3 if he likes to play online too. I've never been much interested in online gaming (it's not usually a friendly environment to a more casual player), so it doesn't bother me that I'm left out. My console can do more anyway

I must argue that point. I've built a great PC for about $500. 4gb RAM, 500gb HDD, dvd-rw, custom led case. It's not that difficult. But my point still stands. The xbox 360 is superior in every way for online gaming. I would only get the PS3 if you're interested in titles such as MGS (Metal Gear Solid). But I also prefer the Wii. That's always a creative choice. And now it's getting even better with MotionPlus coming out.
i have both the elite and ps3. For Online experience I would say has to be elite at the moment value for money has be ps3 blu-ray, bluetooth, online free etc. Ps3 has the potential to be a much better games console then the xbox whether this potential is relised that is another matter.
i have always been a sony, always n nvr wanted/hated microsoft, but no one has a ps3, and the ONLY thing better is the graphics LATER on cuz sony announced that their games r yet to its fullest potential but, again no one has a ps3, the gameplay is so much better, ill just wait for ps4 and get that and its soooooooooooo much cheaper, i thnk the fixed the ring of death, on later versions and now wit the nexflx buy and different packages just get the 360, i love my ps3 but i dont play it much, only for the graphics and its also used for blu ray so i use for that also, and im sure he will want it just in time for Gears of war 2 and UFC undisputed

Awesome! Be sure to come back and post your PSN ID!
the PS3 is simply a better system known world wide. u have already named a couple of the better features urself. the XBox 360 has NOTHING better than the PS3. it also has NOTHING that the PS3 doesnt already have. and it simply doesnt have some of the things that the PS3 has also. lets start with the grafix. to be honest... they arent really worth comparing but i have owned them both and i have sold my XBox 360 because i was in so much of a rush to get rid of the crappy system. ive owned both the same titles on XBox and PS3 and noticed that the PS3 games looked way better and into detail. u have to purchase the wireless XBox controller.... all of the PS3 controllers are wireless. the XBox has a bulky wired head set for their internet chat... while with the PS3 (since it has built-in bluetooth technology) u can use the same small bluetooth headset that u would use with ur phone ON THE GAME CONSOLE. how convenient and universal the PS3 makes ur wireless headset. oh i forgot.... the XBox has a wireless headset also.... but u cant pair it to ur phone, HA . as for online gaming. who can really compare the online gaming??? thats so false what the guy on the first page said. the online gaming performance ALWAYS depends on ur broadband connection, not the console itself. so the online gaming is completely the same. BUT!!!!! XBox u have to pay monthly.... sony made theirs free of charge to have fun. the built-in SixAxis is a really cool feature in the PS3 controller if u do choose to use it. i myself use it very little, but it is still a nice feature to have. its xtremely fun and makes u feel more into the game if u ask me. just like the Nintendo Wii. the XBox does non of this. the XBox has no built-in cooler and the system runs VERY HOT!! run it too long..... and its gone! trust me. i've owned 3 of the peices of crap and its true. u have to buy and external system cooler and it still doesnt work cuz my second XBox over heated too... and once again, i was introduce (FOR THE SECOND TIME) to the "Red Rings OF Death". and the XBox doesnt have to over heat to give you the "Rings OF Death". just simply try to turn it on one day and u will see them... TAA DAAA lol. u have to turn it on and off about 30 times to finally get it to come on. that IF u didnt already over heat it. cuz then its GONE COMPLETELY. the PS3 always turns on. ALWAYS without a problem. remember this popular slogan? well this time lets point it toward the "Ring OF Death"...... "ONLY ON THE XBOX 360" lmao. trust me bro. i dont think anyone else can tell u any better. ive owned them BOTH and the PS3 is just way better. everyone knows. even those people that try to lie and say the PS3 is worse. even they know the PS3 is better. numbers never lie so take a look for urself at the console sales. the Nintendo Wii sold the most.... PS3 sold alot right underneath it..... the XBox sold not even 1 Forth compared to both consoles. everyone knows it for its bad rep. and now that bill gates retired and the head guy for it games is gone too...... what future do they have now??? and look at it this way man. if all the other reasons are not good enuff... the PS3 is STILL THE CHEAPEST BLUE-RAY DVD PLAYER U WILL EVER FIND! simple as that. enuff said yet?? sorry for the long post. just wanted to point u in the right direction. u get what u pay for. dont buy something that not going to last, let alone entertain you.

here we go again with the "nobody owns a PS3" talk again...... omg lol. when u go online to play a game and u enter a room to play. its always full. xbox is always full too. alot of people play online. so how can u compare that system to that other garbage system THAT HAD TO COME OUT WITH AN ELITE VERSION to fix only SOME OF ITS MAJOR BUG ISSUES. man that 360 is wack. just telling the truth and keeping it honest. besides.... u say nobody owns a PS3???? numbers never lie man.... numbers never lie. nobody has a 360 if u ask me. i remember when it first came out. nobody lined up outside with lines wrapped about the building, waiting for them to open so they could buy one. and i remember everywhere i went, they always had them on shelves trying to sell them. on the other hand.... it was very difficult to get my hands on a PS3. mann........ that thing sold like CANNED P*SSY.... u thought i was gone say hot cakes huh. hhaahaha

PS3 did not dominate when it first came out...no one bought it due to its price
Now with the pricedrop and expansion of games, PS3 is the dominating system
I have owned both so here is my take on it:-
No built in power supply - a pain as its big and needs to be kept cool
No HD movie support (Blu Ray) - will be an issue in a few years
No built in wireless - means you need to keep it near to a socket - pain
You have to pay for online gaming? - con as ps3 is free
Ring of death? - yep it will happen to you as everyone i know has had it. Mine went after 1 year and it was a real pain to send back and get repaired but MS did fix it for free it around in 2 weeks. They replaced the motherboard and the CD drive as that was also going wrong. Very Poor for a year old machine.
This was the reason I traded it in for a Wii once MS sent it back
Noisy operation? YES IT IS NOISY compared to the wisper of a PS3
No bluetooth (but do you need it?) No use for it except controllers
PS3 now has plenty of good cheap and 2nd hand games, IMO it looks better, controllers have built in battery that last much longer, itssilent, blu ray, wifi, free online. PS3 wins.
I have both and I use my Xbox for gaming and the ps3 for watching movies. Come this fall you'll be able to save xbox games to harddrive so youll have faster load times and it lifts the limitation on the dvd storage, im sure sony will eventually follow suit. Of course xbox live isnt free but it has less lag than the ps3. But id see which system more of his friends has bc he will get more out of it(i.e playing online and borrowing games).

As far as the Games on HDD goes, if your 360 is modded you can already do that.
A majority of games for PS3 write large amounts of Data when you first load the game to the HDD giving it much faster access
ONLY DOWNFALL OF PS3 - IT WILL NEVER BE MODDED!!!! Many have tried, none have succeeded. Sony seems to have learned from the PSP
i was mislead so im gonna go back and double check at BB to see if what i remember is right or my mind played a trick on me
share your experiances you have had
I rooted mine two hours after buying it, and it's slowly replacing my laptop for web surfing, last.FM, etc
I've wiped mine a few times due to issues i've created tinkering with it....but I love it just the same
Sent from my Nook Color using Tapatalk
As soon as I can get RDP or VNC to work it will replace my laptop when I'm on the move. It is very capable for a tablet.
i just wish it had 3g not every place has free wifi
I used mine about 2 hours total to make sure it was working, then I updated it to 1.0.1, Auto-Nooted it, and have been installing apps and playing with it since. Not a single problem so far except for one which hopefully will get resolved sometime.. I really love my Delicious Bookmarks app, but it requires going into the Accounts and Settings and adding an account, can't do that right now.
I haven't tried the B&N Store or Lend Me since rooting, per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=873975 <--this thread
Otherwise zero problems, it's working great. I'm using FBReader to read my epubs like I always have. The Softkeys are slightly quirky but I'm getting used to them... and like seems to be totally normal on dual-storage devices, some apps aren't looking in the place I'd expect them to, such as WallSwitch (automatically switch wallpapers) is looking in /system/media and not /sdcard or such like I'd expect it to.. I might wind up pushing my pictures there /system has 160M free, no biggie
EDIT: After running the built-in B&N Gallery app, it seems like it spawned a media search and WallSwitch now shows my Backgrounds folder. Yay.
I have had a very good experience with mine so far- problems, glitches, I have minorly screwed it up a few times.
So far I have not screwed it up totally but I will feel much better when we have a full Recovery.
What I like:
The hardware itself, quality and capability seems quite good. Screen is excellent, especially for such a cheap device. WiFi works well- better signal strength than some expensive laptops I have used.
The mod community for rooting and doing so much excellent work already, and hopefully even greater things to come.
What I don't like:
The crippled version of 2.1 B&N has installed.
The lack of GPS and Bluetooth
the lack of portrait mode in B&Ns included software (eReader and many other sections.)
I knew there were many limitations for the stock NC when I ordered mine so I really am not complaining. I don't even mind the lack of cell service since it is pretty easy to connect to an adhoc wifi tether.
The only reason I considered an NC is because they had been rooted a few days before I ordered.
The whole experience is very familiar to me- I first got a Moto Droid shortly after they were first rooted and spent quite a while happily trying many things - and using recovery often.
It is my fervent hope that the devs are as successful with the NC as they were with the original Droid.
Even as the NC is as I type this it is a very good value and tablet.
If we are lucky, it will be a great one soon.
I bought mine solely for the purpose of reading with the added bonus of web surfing and the occasional movie while on the go. I got mine in November before the root and didn't realize there wasn't flash support until I got it home and started playing, went to youtube and got the crummy "mobile" version where the video looked horrible and audio was out of sync. I stumbled across XDA while looking for some kind of a flash hack and rooted after a week of debating whether I should. I'm glad I did.
Thanks to the root, the NC has gone from mundane to a very worth-while device. I love all the stuff I can do thanks to the app support. The youtube app and Dolphin HD alone make it worth rooting.
I was saying in another thread that I had gotten the NC primarily as a reading device, I love periodicals and the NC is pretty good for those. I was on the fence about getting it for a while, the fact that it could be rooted sealed the deal.
I wound up having to exchange my first NC (thankfully the factory reset went very smoothly) due to serious screen flicker issues when the device was set at a mid-level brightness. My second one is much better, though I can still detect a tiny bit of visual flicker under certain lighting conditions.. not a deal-breaker tho.
Couple issues that I've come across :
1. I screwed up the driver install on my PC the first time I tried it, didn't have the INI file in the right place and couldn't side-load anything on to my NC or access it as a storage device. Totally my fault for botching that one. Second try worked fine.
2. My YouTube app no longer launches, it just flicks on for a sec and goes back to the desktop. Probably need to re-install it.
3. Some memory issues when using ACV (comic viewer) to view CBR files. Frequent issues loading pages from the archive files. No issues at all if I extract the images to folders first and load that way, though so it's all good for my comic reading
4. Some apps that I wanted to download like SwitchPro Widgets don't show up in the market for me. Have to side-load them (which stinks since I paid for it and won't be able to get updates directly from the market).
I haven't had the stones to attempt installing the new market app. The old one works well and I'm not a big risk-taker Other than that, the NC is the little tablet that could! It's a fantastic way to get an Android tablet and very capable e-reading device for an extremely reasonable price.
We have 2 of these at home. It has already replaced my laptop at home, Using it mainly for web surfing and reading. I don't mind too much that it does not have 3g since I use my phone to tether when I am on the go. The screen size is just perfect. I just can't see myself trying to carry around anything larger, I love the portability of this thing. I don't know what Steve Jobs meant by saying that people don't want 7" tablets
The rooting process was simple enough and the only problems I had was youtube not working. I did a command in adb that was posted in another thread for the fix. I don't know about the problems with the lend me feature since I have not tried.
I went to my local best buy and barnes and noble yesterday and they are all sold out of the nook color. The nook color seems successful only being launched a month ago, I would not hesitate in getting one. I am very pleased also with the support that it is getting here on XDA.
My wife's NC is still stock but after I showed her what it can do rooted she is thinking about it. It was her idea in the first place to get these things. I was really looking to get a Galaxy Tab but the NC has satisfied my needs @ only $250. I guess I will spend the money I saved on a new Android phone after CES

What he meant was that he doesn't want to sell one, therefore nobody should use them.
And remember, you are talking about the guy who tells people how they are supposed to hold their phones.
I bought one last night fort my wife.rooted it right away and toyed around with for a little bit before bed..
What directory do downloaded files from the internet go to? my evo downloads go to a download folder on sd card but I couldnt find it on the NC. Bash me if you must but give me an answer. TIA
I picked mine up on Black Friday. Had to do some sweet talking... the ones in the store were spoken for already. Well, needless to say I got it, and it's saved my shoulders. Using my 15.6 inch laptop during the 40 min train commute was nice and all but hauling it from car to train, train to office and vice versa wasn't exactly ideal. I'm not a small guy or anything, but HP sure doesn't make things light
So far my NC has been a very worthy companion. It's gotten plenty of looks, comments, oooohhhhs and aaaahhhhhs after I show them Angry Birds and other things. I tether it to my TP2 and I've got internet. I use it in the coffee shops, during lunch to read, at home for a quick browse, at work as a file transfer medium, all in all it has become an indispensable companion. And that's even without BT and Flash. It would be nice if it had a GPS but quite irrelevant really... my TP2 covers that function very nicely. Nedless to say I'm extremely happy with it. One of the best purchases I ever made!
It's great and very encouraging to read all these positive comments about the NC. I have been lurking here since soon after the NC came out and was very happy to hear when it got rooted.
So far I have only played with a stock version in BB, but I'm about 99% sure there is one wrapped and already under the xmas free for me. Thx wifey! Can't wait to officially join the NC group on Xmas day.

Your wife will regret the purchase when your attention span is completely on the NC and not her, lol...
Its a sweet device that will only get better form here on out. Once bluetooth, nav, and a nice EQ music app (like powerAmp) are up and running, this device can become a phone companion (for roaming wifi), nettop replacement, and even a capable a carputer - nav, OBD2 reader/code clear app, and audio source (bt calls and music).

How will peripherals be connected? Does the hardware support USB to go, or do you think there is a BT chip onboard but inactive? Because that would be sweet!

To be fair, the BT **SHOULD** be there, based on the listed specs, but custom hardware for things like this is not uncommon, so i won't dream about BT until we really get it.

I predict that in 2011 Jobs will announce a new breakthrough in Apple engineering, and will release a 7" tablet. At that time he will also rename the two tablets; MINiPAD and MAXiPAD... I'm just sayin'...
Oh you mean the nanopad... I have that already trademarked... Jobs, we know you're lurkin.. Call me up to negotiate leasing rights.
On that note B&N should let XDA release NC2... Nothing but free droid books loaded upon purchase.
Picked mine up last night and the root process went very well. Couldn't be easier -- thanks to all the hard work by the guys here and at NookDev.
I picked up a Galaxy Tab but returned it before I opened it. I just couldn't justify $600 for that device so, while the Tab has a few more features (2.2, GPS, etc.) this is an awesome little tablet for the money.
Couldn't be happier.
I was curious and thought this would be kind of a neat app. Is there an app that I can use to turn my GTab into an external/second monitor for my laptop? If so is it Linux compatible or just Windows? Is it USB or WIFI?
I've been trying to find something like this also.
You could try a remote access app. There are a few to choose from in the market. There are also a few threads here about some of the different options.
Looks like the iPad has one ... wonder if they will work on an Android version:

Too bad too, I like maxivista.
Surprised their devs are so naive as to say they couldn't see the market for and android version. Guess they don't actually watch or read the news much.
(BTW, I mean the PC version, I have never drunk the apple/itunes koolaid)

Lol. I'll second that. Aren't we the "hackers" always looking to do something cool with our open source gadgets? They are as naive as it gets.
I was just thinking of something like this aswell. Is it possible to re-engineer the hdmi-out to take hdmi-in? I'd love to plug my cable box into my tab while i play xbox on the TV (or vice versa) I know there has been no positive progress on hdmi-in with HTC's mini-HDMI implementation. Maybe viewsonic (being a monitor company) has a better possibility? Any dev's feel like taking a crack at it?
iDisplay is available in the android market. works just like the iOS version.
Anyone tried iDisplay on the gtab?
I thought I'd buy it but there are only two bad reviews on their webpage and eleswhere I've read that they do no give refunds. There is no trial version on their site, but their terms of service says that customers are expected to run trial versions before they buy . . .
I sent them a kind message asking them if they truly expect anyone to give them money for basically nothing. But I tried to be nice, and to encourage them to post a trial so I could buy and give them a positive review. Five bucks ain't much, but darned if I'll give it away to shmucks . . .
Anyway, if the app works well, they deserve our support.
My gtab is running vegan5 and I use the HP mini wireless keyboard with both of the office suites available. The gtab is taking place of my laptop and doing a great job of it. To be able to also use it to augment the laptop by giving me more screen real estate would be icing on the cake.
Thanks for posting this thread. I never would have thought if it.
iDisplay working
I gave it a try and am happy to let you know it is working well. It is a bit laggy and slowed down my computer a bit but does work for an extra screen.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll purchase the app. I loaded the XP application and it appears that a virtual server is created which could be the reason for the slowdown.
It would be nice if some of these application developers provided just a wee bit of info that could be used to determine if an app is appropriate or not. I think that the apple market has set a kind of precedent for wishy-washy frivolity that is going to carry over into the android market unless google demands a higher degree of responsibility. The time is now, before the market matures as android tabs and notebooks take over most of our computing tasks, as I think they will.
The apps written for the old Palm devices were held to a much higher standard than a lot of iPhone apps I've seen. But then the Palm devices were oriented towards business productivity and not so much as toy/entertainment oriented as iPhones and iPads. I spent part of the day with my hands on the Xoom tab, and talking to several Motorola reps and Verizon sales people. I must have sounded like an evangalist for the android OS.
If google is listening I'd like to tell them to take their work seriously right now because they could be taking over the entire personal computing market in the near future. Computing, regardless of platform, is not all about entertainment. We in engineering and science have needs that also require more versatile hardware and software. The tegra3 is just around the corner . . . then what? How will all those extra processing cores be made truly useful? I want an android powered tricorder.
My evangelical proclivities are simply gushing forth . . . (in all the wrong places)
Thanks again to the OP for initiating this thread.
I tried iDisplay today. I like it! It is a bit laggy, but works great other than that!

Netflix now has an app for the Nintendo 3DS, yet we can't get one for these Tetra 2 powerhouses. Hell, it works on my Nook!
Its really annoying. I cancelled my account.
If you have an account, please call and ask about it. The more people complain, the more likely they are to make the fix.
Ill restart my subscription if they get it going, but for now, Netflix has lost a customer.
Has anyone heard if/when they are going to step up?
I have to admit that I am surprised that nvidia isn't screaming at them.
i just got my own account the other day, i've been piggybacking off of others for like a year and a half. I can't wait to have it on my xoom so I can just plug it into my living room TV instead of lugging one of my consoles out there, but I can wait.
I couldnt help but to laugh when I first saw a youtube video on 3Ds...I mean it was a big slap in the face to all xoom users.

yeah, we get it, netflix is on the 3ds. this WAS announced from the start you know.
And its not like the doesn't work on the zoom, they just disabled the streaming portion. It took them almost a year after the HTC evolution came to even release an android client, no telling how long for a tablet version.
Yeah no kidding Netflix should be a given on such power full tablets I just don't get it

Haha I do have Netflix on my 3DS right now!
But for my Xoom, nah not possible yet, I hear ya OP. But the 3DS is Nintendo. The Wii is one of the consoles that Netflix fully supports, and if you look at the 3DS version, it's basically the same app ported over from the Wii to the smaller portable 3DS screen.
Nintendo and Netflix have a console+steaming service relationship. They will always officially support each other, no matter what. This is not the case with Android. Not fully and completely supported, not just yet anyways.
We will see full Android support for Netflix in due time. Maybe when Ice cream sandwich makes its debut, who knows. All new tablets and phones will run the same exact OS, making it pretty easy to fully support all devices without a problem. That's what I believe they are looking to do. Makes perfect sense.
The is one of the worst consoles ever. My kids wont even play it, thed rather play angry birds on my phone/tablet. Just email netflix ever day about the xoom...bug the crap out of them

That would be nice, if they listed an email address or had a form to submit. Their customer service contact page only shows a phone number. But, I did just call and had a refreshingly frank discussion with the rep who answered my call. He said they were actively working on it and the issue was related to meeting studios' requirements for DRM in Honeycomb tablets. He was aware of the discussions here and on the other Xoom forum and he even said that some users had been able to change settings to make it work (he wasn't specific, but I presume he meant the build.prop device ID or something like that). I'm still running stock, so I told him this wasn't an option but I thanked him for his candor. He said it was definitely in development, but was unable to provide a timeframe.
I have to admit that his knowledge of the issue and his apparent honesty have me satisfied for the moment and willing to wait a while longer.

guys guys, and girls, get playon for android and stream hulu and netflix and everything else from it to your acer or xoom.
This whole thing with neflix cracked me up. I always thought their streaming selection was pretty weak, I only wanted the dvd's as the last rental place in my town went out of business. So I dropped the streaming part, kept the dvd's and saved $2 bucks. To add to that, I always end up using www.crackle.com as it's free and has lots of good movies and shows. It'll also work on the Xoom browser and on my ps3. Netflix screwed up, greedy company is greedy!

Crackle looks interesting but I can't use it without an almost immediate FC on my stock browser. And keeping a pc running at home while I travel, just so I can run a third party streamer, seems unnecessary. I, for 1, am willing to wait a bit longer... (at least until I find something better)

Playon has to be the biggest piece of crap, you can't even rewind with that or skip forward while playing Netflix, also if viewing Netflix thru playon it wont remember your position if you stop and resume later, splashtop is way better. I've paid for playon for a whole year and am so upset with their product

I bought chromecast the day it came out from best buy. Since then I have used it maybe 3 times. It was more of an impulse buy since most Google stuff is awesome.
The fact that I can only use this with Netflix or YouTube is bs. Trying to get local vids to play through chrome browser is hit or miss. Most of the time it just downloads whatever movie I try to play. If I want to watch a local vid from the comp I just turn on the Xbox.
Hopefully Google gets their stuff together and let's ppl stream from the phone to the tv, then I would use it. Until then it will remain plugged into my TV taking up an HDMI port until I need to plug in something that I will use or until Google adds more functionality. And Netflix streaming sucks. Kinda a crappy "bonus" if u ask me.
Not useless, but my excitement has waned significantly. Google seems to be following the GoogleTV mode on this device too, which means we most likely won't ever see it reach its potential, for a myriad of political and monetary reasons. My similarly priced Rockchip MK808 GTV stick has lots of capabilities, but I did have to buy a control point (Lenovo N5902) and it is a bit more fiddly than Chromecast, but the power and capability makes it worth it.
What's with the incessant whining? The product has only been out for less than a month, it's still getting into customers' hands and its development is in progress. The product's capabilities were clear when you bought it (Netflix, YouTube, Google Play and Chrome tab streaming). Wait for progress or return it and save us the drama.

I see a lot of people complaining that this device only does what google said it would do. I don't understand this. When the SDK is officially released and apps start appearing then you will get extra functionality but until then don't complain that you can do exactly what was advertised.
I agree, chromecast is pretty much useless.
Casting from a Chrome browser tab gives me a low quality picture.
I'm back to using hdmi cable.
It will gather dust until someday Google permits Fling to function again.
Or maybe until the next garage sale?
Regards
I'm pretty happy with it so far. Netflix support is great and Play Movies is (in my opinion) the best place to purchase digital movies. Really the only thing it's missing for me is playing *ahem* acquired movies.
I am happy with it so far.
I have never been a big youtube user because i don't like to sit at the computer and watch videos. Chromcasting youtube has been a ton of fun for me over the past couple of weeks. I find it a little easier than using youtube in the browser on my htpc with the keyboard. I experience less eyestrain looking at the tablet in my hands than trying to navigate youtube the screen 10+ feet away.
...but hoping the pace of new casting enabled apps picks up.

Thats funny since the app you loved so much uses the same video compress as the chrome browser. I cant beleive anyone is happy flinging <480p video(as far as i know the 500px width is about the highest quality webm video they've gotten to go to the chromecast. Its a neat tool but not practical for transcoding hidef video(or even dvd)
I agree with the current lack of usability. Hopefully new functions will appear soon.
It does what Google said it would do. More functionality hopefully will come and should come. But I use Chromecast daily for watching Breaking Bad and YouTube for my son
Sent from my CLEAN Note II
I got mine about a week ago ir less after being on backorder for 4 weeks. I too HOPE we get more functionality from it soon/in time. BUT it has been nice to have for me for the price. My living room big tv has directCRAPtv connected to it which is okay but no other real devices except dvd player and vhs bel8eve it or not (which hardly ever get used).
So for the price it cost $42 shipped even with netflix it is worth thst little money. We have 3 roku's connected in three other rooms with netflix already, Hulu+ and they cost what about 3 times as much and dont do much more than this.
Since we have already seen some PREVIEW apps that shows what it CAN DO I know in time it will have more usage available. Hell I remember when the google market didnt have many apps with my first android device. I kept seeing comparisons (as stupid as they were) about iCrap having way mire apps available. Some things like this Chromecast start off slowly but I bet most apps worth streaming will work soon enough. So for the price I paid I can wait a while for the functionality I want.
I am an adult and have some patience. We have already seen Google response to the local streaming content. So I know in time it will come. So no worries. I probabky wont buy another 1 or more until it has the functionality/apps ready. But for the price and features already it is worth it. I rather watch the netflix on the 72" screen than my rooms 3w inch screens, let alone my tab or phone. Do I watch it on the other devices? Yes. So I feel the difference in the big screen...

No offense to you but a good amount of that "incessant whining" is highly justified. Logitech pretty much has left us with a device that is buggy beyond belief. If I can't do simple stuff like YouTube without having to reformat it every other day then it's a fail in my opinion. Aw well once I can get my hands on the MiniX Neo X7 then I'm done with the Revue once and for all.

None taken...I felt your pain for a few weeks before throwing in the towel on that product (ow, the pain of early adopter). My point is that we've 'been here before' with some Google widget that fell short of its promise, owing to a too-early, 'not ready for prime-time player' (nod to the SNL oldsters out there) and disorganised messages about updates and direction of development. If they're hunkering down in attempt to curry favor with big media companies (learned a lesson from GTV?), we're in for a long wait, and likely a hampered SDK, Still, I like what I've seen from these third-party devs (Bubble, ALL/Air, etc.), and hope we see a quick release and uptick on 'indie' dev that doesn't necessarily promote Google's own agenda.
edit: I'm curious why you prefer the Minix X7 over a recent MK Rockchip stick?
