Hey
Sorry
I have a non rooted nexus one.
I downloaded rom manager
When I go into the app it says that it can't find su under /system/bin.
I found a superuser app- superuser.apk.
If I put superuser under /system/bin would rom manager work???
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
It clearly says you need root in the application description.
But I think it says that so superuser could install. If I could install it manually could it work??
I will flash cyan's mod so that would root.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Superuser is like a firewall that lets you restrict su access to your system. It's only useful once you have rooted. You need to root first...

How do you plan on putting something on the /system partition (that you don't have write access to unless you are rooted)?
Please save yourself some stupid posts (and everyone else's time) and read the newbie threads and articles that appear in Sticky threads at the top of each forum and/or in the NexusOne Wiki. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page&pagename=Nexus_One)
You are obviously in over your head and will just end up breaking things unless you start out by having a decent understanding of what you're doing.

You can see it, but can't write to that folder until rooted.
No, not again. 7th thread on the subject?
Reported.
1) Superuser.apk doesn't go to /system/bin
2) You should use that link I gave you yesterday, rather than making yet another thread to ask the same question.
http://jaxov.com/2010/10/root-android-2-2-1-frg83-google-nexus-one/
PLEASE READ THAT AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, AND YOU WILL HAVE A ROOTED PHONE.
That will root your device and install the su binary.
You've asked the same question about 7 times now. You have been given the answer. Please search, use the wiki, and use google, as I did, to get that link.
Again, the links in my signature may give some help for future in the etiquette of asking questions.
This has got to be like the 10th post I have seen from you asking the same thing over and over. If you want root, you need to either run the 1-click or you need to unlock your bootloader. You cannot and will not just magically get root by adding an apk. Do some reading and quit asking the same stupid ass questions.

Agreed..plus you even took the time to check the box saying it was a question?????? then you could have taken the time to see the STICKY THREAD saying post questions in the right section.
second off if you dont know what your deleting before you delete it then you shouldnt be deleting stuff from your phone. Do some research before you start deleting items. PLUS do some research about pushing an item. quit being lazy.
Go to the market and get an app called system app remover(it works wonders)!

I see your was asked in your last thread about battery, you should not post questions in development section. It took 1 minute using the search function in this forum to find your answer to where that file is.
Hopefully this information will make you stop posting these questions in this section, Using Root Explorer or a comparable program navigate to (Mount R/W first): data>system> you will find and be able to delete file batterystats.bin or you can use Rom Manager and boot into clockwork recovery mod go to advanced and there is an option to wipe battery stats. Then you will need to cycle your battery a couple time to get it to show correctly.
Yeah but you know none of these options have worked and neither of the have shown it. I am know thinking that it is a problem with the way I flashed it or a problem with my phones Tom so that's why I posted it in the android development section. You know people like you make us wonder why people aren't nice any more

Astro will not work, you need root access. Download root explorer and go to the root directory. Data-> System -> Batterybins.bin
just delete it from there.
For future notice, a Google search can avoid all this. Thats what i did when I had this same exact problem.

You need to dumb down the terminal... It's trying to display colors.
Try...
ls --color=never (I used this one)
\ls (This also turned up in a search)
Still no luck
I have adb installed and I can get to shell but i cant get it to install apps. I have downloaded the apks but when I try to install them I am lost. I was hoping someone could upload an image of froyo with all the needed apps if this is possible. I am leaving town in the morning and I will not be able to bring my computer with me. So I was hoping to get this before I go to bed so I have something for my trip out of town. I really want the market and but really all the wanted apps. Thanks in advance.
Some of the recent posts have suggested that we may soon see a patch for the root exploit we currently have.
Being that we have root now is there some place we could hide SU where we could access it later should root be closed on us, allowing re-rooting of the device? It would have to be some place that does not get overwritten when an update is pushed...and I am not sure if that even exists on Android.
Not easily, since system is one of two partitions that doesn't have nosuid or noexec set.

Dunno about that, but I've been told there are a couple root methods being saved for later....
So I guess I am correct in assuming that the entire /system gets overwritten during an update?
I just played a bit with /root but cannot get anything to run with the current permissions of the mount.
For my understanding am I correct in the belief that all system directories get overwritten "/sys/ /system/"?

It doesn't get overwritten, but the update does reset all permissions. Thus, the su executable will still be there after the update, but will be chmodded 0755.
Just brainstorming so feel free to tell me I'm wrong
What about replacing a suid binary. Ping is the one I am thinking of right now. Would the update replace that file?

Looking at the permissions set in the update's script, it doesn't look feasible. If I'm reading them right, PING's permissions only allow it access to the NET_RAW group, which doesn't give us anything useful. Everything else is just as unhelpful.
Anyone know if it would be possible to fastboot flash an older recovery to a device with a newer bootloader, then temproot that and use it to permroot the device?

I would rather have bugs than no root. I sat on my droid3 until root was available rather than activating it.
Would it be possible in that case to run FOTAkill on a rooted d3? If so, would it help?
I noticed a couple of OTA/update related apks while noodling with Titanium.... could those be frozen to prevent updates?

There are only one or two lines in build.prop that need to be changed to prevent receiving OTAs or update notifications. Search on the DroidX forums and you'll find these values.
Editing the build.prop is not the best way to prevent OTA updates.
It will cause issues with Market and other functions that read those strings for various reasons.
Disabling by freezing or renaming BlurUpdater_VZW.apk and FOTA.apk is safer and will not affect anything else adversely.

Thanks. I'll give that a go.
There is always something being worked on to retain/get root again after a patch. There is also a good reason it doesn't get talked about in any kind of detail.
I'm considering buying a HTC Vivid from AT&T, from what I've read, the bootloader for the AT&T Vivid is locked, but it is possible to temporarily unlock it. I also plan to overclock my phone, I've found custom kernels that can overclock the vivid, they say that the phone needs to be rooted. But is a temp root going to give me enough access to install the overclocking kernel? I have jailbroken consoles and HP Touchpad, but I haven't really played with Android or Linux. So if please excuse me if my terminology is used incorrectly. Thanks.
You can unlock the bootloader through HTC'S dev site and get perm root. Just follow the superguide in the development section and you will be good to go.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to this, after I rooted the phone, how do I install the app? I have an apk file and I tried using the Android Central SWM, but it doesn't work with my phone. I have also enabled the Applications from Unknown sources. But there's no way for me to install.
Edit: I saw that it installed an app called Superuser, but I can't install any apps through Superuser, do I need to put the apk file in a specific folder in order for Superuser to recognize it? Thanks.

you have some reading to do......
That was helpful. I was just looking for a way to install apps to my phone. So far it seems like maybe I can modify the .bat script from the temp root method to install .apk files that way, but that seems risky and I don't want to mess up my brand new phone.
Seems like this is the wrong site to ask, this is a developer site, so I guess I'll ask this somewhere else.

no, you just need to use some logic, and this little thing called SEARCHING
you want to install apps on your phone?
you just put them on your sdcard or download them from the phone itself, open a file manager, browse to the apk file and click on it. it will ask to install..... you are making this out to be way harder than it is. and you did not need root for that to take place. its a function of the OS, you dont need the computer in order to install apps.....this is all basic android stuff you could learn by using GOOGLE....
and you are right, this is a developers site, it is not a hold-my-hand site for noobs.....

No need to ask anywhere, google is your friend. Installing apps is very easy, and rooting isn't even necessary. As PG already said, it's as easy as using a file explorer, and also checking that box in the settings about unknown sources.

Thanks for the link, those methods are definitely easier than what I did. I edited the temp root .bat file to copy the .apk file to the phone's internal memory, then I used Astro brower to browse to that directory, then install it from there.

dude, all you have to do is plug in your phone and when it asks you set it to disk mode...it shows up as another drive on your computer...you dont need to use any kind of bat file....this is all seriously generic and basic android usage. as i stated before:
you have some reading to do......
its not to be mean, but seriously, you are asking stuff like this in the same breath as ROOTING your phone. this type of stuff isnt meant to be taken lightly or without some READING and comprehension. know what you are doing to your phone before you royally screw it up....
at this rate, i have a feeling it wont be long before we see a help thread....
I don't understand either. Why not do it the apk way? That is the easiest method. It takes like twenty second to allow unknown sources, go to file manager, click on the apk and install it.
