[Please help] First time installing custom rom, does not work. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is the first time I am rooting and installing a custom rom. Please help me!
I followed the instructions on the first page of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091 but I can't get this ROM to install. I get the following message...
E: Can't symlink /system/bin/cat
E:Failure at line 6:
symlink toolbox SYSTEM:bin/cat
Installation aborted.
I have tried installing both the latest version (7) and 5.6.
What can I do?

which firmware is on your device? are you rooted?
try Docs or darky's rom and do not unzip the rom file. put on internel SD

Im on JM9 (Eclair) and trying to install darkys rom (tried both v.7 and 5.6). I am not rooted as it says in darkys installation guide:
"- Either an 2.1 Eclair Firmware
- or Froyo and a kernel with Recovery 2e [by ChainFire] to flash 'update.zip' files."
I am on Eclair (I downgraded from Froyo with Odin). I have put it on internal SD and I have not unzipped it.

After eclair you have to flash clockwork recovery mod (cwm) after that you are able to flash modded roms

Did you use lag fix?? disable it first.
Or you can also try ROM Manager (d/l from market) to flash ClockWork recovery.
By the way, for which part that you got struck??

Yes, get a hold of Clockwork recovery (linked in Darky's post I think but you can just search for it), rename it update.zip and put it in the root of your internal SD, then using 2e recovery apply it (twice) to get into clockwork recovery from which you can flash custom ROMs etc.

I have got past what you describe. The error message comes when I am trying to install the actual darky rom from CWM.

Hmmm..perhaps you have a broken download? Try this. On your computer, open the Darky ROM with winrar or 7zip or something similar. Does it open fine? Or does it give an error of some sort? If it does show an error, redownload and make sure it's working.
This was the case for people always getting stuck with similar errors while flashing custom ROMs

It opens fine. I have also tried both v.7 and version 5.6.

Rename it only to
Update
As it is already a .zip file

Should I try to reset Dalvik?

Did you try a different rom like a doc rom or one from jim pansee to see if the problems are just with darkyys rom?

Have not tried another custom rom yet. I obviously should try that.

Clockwork Mod Recovery

I installed CWM from ROM Manager, and on boot into recovery (using the VolUp-VolDown-Power), I get to standard recovery and have to select "reinstall packages" to get into CWM. I have to do this every time, it never just goes to CWM automatically.
Also when I wipe Dalvik cahce, I get this:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 (file exists)
Dalvik cache wiped.
What are the problems? I haven't made a JIG yet, so I'm afraid to flash any ROM, especially with these errors.
You're getting those errors BECAUSE you didn't flash a custom ROM.
Perfectly normal. Don't worry about it.

Sorry to be a little paranoid but could you explain why the error comes with without a custom ROM? I'm on stock Rogers 2.2 JL1 by the way if that helps

I think it's because the stock kernel is packaged with stock recovery. A new kernel from a custom rom will contain CWM recovery.

But I installed CWM through ROM Manager, so it's installed. The only problem is that I always have to select "reinstall packages" and it just doesn't start automatically.

you probably got a error when you select reinstall packages.....
i ran into this problem as well......seems that rom manager's cwm is not working probably on the captivate.....at least the rogers version........
the rogers 2.2 stock rom comes with recovery (3e)....but it seems that the CWM will only work on 2e....(at least that is what i think.....)
i got around it by flashing back to the AT&T 2.1 stock rom (since there is no stock rom in 2.1 for rogers)......install CWM then install a custom rom with 2.2.1....(didn't feel like sticking with the rogers rom)

[Q] Install new ROM 2.3

Hello,
I try to install new ROM the my first time (and also try to backup my ROM)
So I root my phone (I hope I did it )
and I install ROM Manager .
I download ROM Ultibread-V1.4.ZIP and copy to the root of the SD.
When I open the ROM manager and select to backup my ROM or select Install ROM fro SD Card and get into recovery mod I'm getting only the following options:
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip (this all the time give me error that the file is corrupt even if I download and copy new file
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
format internal sd-card
How can I solve that ?
An easy alternative would be to flash any Froyo Kernel. It would give you Clockwork Recovery directly. You just have to boot into recovery and apply the ROM.
Thats because stock rom can not run unsigned update.zip.
Try to flash speedmod or ultimate kernel via ODIN.
But please make sure that you have 2e or 3e recovery before you use ODIN
Flash cf root in Odin. This will give you 2e recovery which you need to install zip files. Then flash speedmod Odin version and you should have working cwm.

hi dude,
what I would suggest is using Darky's rom ressurection edition
i had the exact same prob but it got solved
it's a little difficult but you shouldn't get stuck if u follow the instructions well
link here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671
this should work
I think I'll wait with flashing Gingerbread for Darky's rom based on it Wouldn't change that for anything else!

NeonGT theme

heya guys,
first of all im really new to all this stuff
ive just installed 2.2 froyo.
and now i would like to install NeonGT on it.
I am rooted.
so i downloaded the NeonGT zip file.
renamed it to Update.zip
so i went to recorvery mode (lower vulume + power + menu buttens)
and click on the 'apply sdcard:update.zip'
but it say'd this
'E:error in /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip
(status 2)
installation aborted'
so i dit some more looking on the web
and it say'd i had to download ROM Manager and so i did.
went to 'reboot into recovery' but it didn't reboot, it didn't do a think.
so i went to 'Install rom from sd card' also dat didn't worked
can anyone help me?
First off, you need to be on a custom ROM because it's deodexed and therefore can accept a theme. You need to be on a custom kernel with clockwork mod in order to flash the zip file that the theme comes in. Finally, you need to make sure that the theme that you are flashing is compatible with the ROM you're using.
Step one; pick a custom ROM and download CWM version and stick it in the root directory of your SD card. Do the same with the theme.
Step two; flash a custom kernel with clockwork mod through Odin.
Step three; enter recovery, clear cache, Dalvik cache, factory reset/wipe and then flash the custom ROM. You're rooted so I'll assume you have titanium backup, if not you should have gotten it and I'm hoping you read these instructions before acting on them....
Step four; flash the theme through recovery mode with clockwork mod. Use "choose zip from SD card", not update.zip
Step five; run the restore on titanium backup, wait for a little while(paid version) or sit there and press install... done for all of your apps.
Step six; enjoy.
.
heya Exinferios
thnx for youre reply.
well i have Gingerbread 2.3 the leaked version on my Galaxy s i9000
im very noobish so i dont know what files i have to use.
cause i installed Gingerbread while following a movie on youtube >-<
if you can say what things i need to download to get this working
it would give me a happy day lol
Confirmed working with Spike's 5.1 JPY, Darky's V7.7/8.0 JPY, Insanity 0.3.1 JPY and Doc's V8.0/1 JPY.
New confirmed working with new JS3 roms, like Doc's 9.1/Darky's 9.2 as well as other custom JPX/U/Y and JS3 roms.
so what should i download ?

[Q] Help With Custom Rom installation.

Hi there,
Since gingerbread with most probably be the last update for SGS i would like to install a custom mod.
Now i have been trying to do this (darky 10 RC4) for the past 2 days.
I followed Darky's instructions then i had a problem with the CWM only accepting "edified" script.
So i downloaded rom manger and tried to downgrade ta 2.5 but as soon as i tap on the 2.5 it immediately comes up with an error, "an error occured while flashing your recovery."
this is done on a 2.3.3 JVB SGS with CWM 3 installed (orange text).
Are there alternate routes? maybe downgrading to android 2.2 installing an older version of darky and than upgrading the darky rom?
any help is much appreciated.
thanks
Download the rom CWM-zip and put it in your internal sdcard.
Download some froyo-kernel (yes, froyo) with CWM 2.5. Speedmod for example. Then flash it with Odin repartition and auto-reboot unticked. When the flashing process is completed, pull the battery and then boot to recovery (3 button combo). Now you have CWM 2.5 and you can flash the CWM-zip from there.
thanks, i wil try that.

Sorry. With CWM-zip I meant the Darky's Rom.zip, which can be flashed through CWM.
it didnt work, u just gave up.
hopefully some new rom update that is edified will show up in a couple of months
Install supercurio hacked kernel, it has recovery 2.5 instead of 3.0.0.5. From there you should be able to install darky's rom. If the new version of his kernel is recovery 3, tell me i'll send the old one just for the purpose.
Hi,
ok last attempt
i flashed ( odin PDA, no pit and no repartition) with this link:
Kernel Download:
Gingerbread-GT-I9000-stock-kernel+hacks.tar
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975349
while i was on
PDA_I9000XWJVB - PHONE_I9000XXJVK - CSC_I9000XEEJV3
rooted with root CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v3.1-CWM3RFS
and lag fixed with CF-Root-ext4-v1.2
and it forking worked red text 2.5 THANKS A BUNCH!
edit just a problema. it is only booting in CWM.
reattempting this without the lag fix.
2nd attempt with PDA_I9000XWJVB - PHONE_I9000XXJVK - CSC_I9000XEEJV3
and without lag fix not rooting.
phone stuck looping at booting with strange sound on each boot loop
3rd attempt with rooting, but no lagfix
If you are only rebooting in recovery, did you flash the new kernel, then reboot recovery ? if yes, the easy way to get out, is to reboot in download then reflash the wanted kernel (Since your rom is installed, you can install any kernel (GB of course)) then, it will reboot in recovery again and just reboot system now. This should fix your problem.
edit : Dont forget to get CF-root 3.1 for JVB and not JVK.

ok, i couldnt do that before because i had deleted the rom form the internal SD.
and also thanks for pointing out that i had the wrong root (i worked by you never know if it could case problems)
ok so
PDA_I9000XWJVB - PHONE_I9000XXJVK - CSC_I9000XEEJV3
root CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS
lagfix CF-Root-ext4-v1.2-Addon
and
Gingerbread-GT-I9000-stock-kernel+hacks
and the zip is in progress.
ps it wasnt stuck the previous time, i was pressing the middle key as the selection while i should have been pressing the power button.
thanks for your help very much appreciated.
if i get some free time i will write at tutorial since i could not the solution.

[Q] Can not flash cwm recovery

Sorry for repost, wrong category.
So, here's the story again .
1. I had 2.3.3 xxjvo Gingerbread with cfroot
2. I flashed 4.02, the platypus one
3. I wanted to go back, I used my cwm backup
4. Cwm's were different version -> soft brick
5. Flashed stock froyo with 2e recovery
6. Unbricked phone with dbdata.rar
7. Noticed still have the 4.0.2 kernel
8. rooted the phone anyway with cfroot because no root
9. Got Rom manager, Superuser. Flashed recovery from the app
10. Noticed: still 2e recovery.
11. Tried to reflash. No result.
It asked the permissions and everything, why not work?
Also, is there a way to install a fully stock rom and kernel with odin?
Can 4.0 be flahed with odin?
Instal a stock rom and then flash CF-root from here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
I'll try, but I kinda did that already.
Where can I get the original xxjvo rom with the kernel, the links seem to always bee broken!

Man try this:http://androidadvices.com/info/samsung/galaxy-s-i9000/page/4/
I solved this one myself: I made a cwm backp, which messed things up from the beginning, but I knew it was valid.
I got a very similiar rom to my own, flashed it, cfrooted and used cwm to restore the old file:
IT'S UP 'N' RUNNING WITH ALL ITS APPS!
I am so glad, I will probably go to ICS again but now I'll just flash the firmware and use my backup. I gotta love this SGS.
