[Q] Getting just Market from gapps - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running Aosp's Gingerbread Alpha on my Hero, but I haven't been able to get any of Cyanogen's gapps files to install. Every time I reboot after installing a gapps pack I go straight to boot-looping. The phone works fine though without any gapps installed though.
I'm thinking that one of the many apps in gapps isn't compatible, and causing the reboot. I have a backed up copy of my Vending-2.apk, but nothing else. When I go to open market, it immediately closes -- probably because it never presents me with a TOS screen.
What other apks do I need to make *just* Market work?

I could not get the market to load with the 10/25 gapps.. I used the 10/20 gapps and everything loaded no problem...

Weird! For me, the 12/25 gapps were the only ones that wouldn't cause a continuous reboot cycle. I installed them after I'd already booted into Gingerbread once, per the instructions.
I like having a clan system, so I was happy to see that Titanium Backup was on there and would let me remove unwanted gapps in "Chuck Norris Mode"

Hanging on Install/Uninstall

Disclaimer: did several forum searches and google searches and came up empty, so if I missed the exact wording and this is covered elsewhere please don't flame me into oblivion.
For some reason my Nexus One running FRF85B is unable to install or uninstall any apk's. It just hangs at the installing... or uninstalling... respectively. Has anyone else ever seen that?
Installing has always been really darn quick. Now it just appears to be hanging.
EDIT: Adding new symptom: "Manage Applications" shows the apps installed , but their space is forever listed as "Computing...". It's like the manage applications service is just hosed.
Randy
I have seen that as well. I would have to exit (back or home) then when I got back to the applications screen again it wouldn't have to load at all.
Same here, AT&T Nexus One using FRF85B.
The weird thing is, the app(s) actually DO uninstall or install correctly, just that the Market page shows it's not, and hangs at it.
When I force stop the market, then relaunch and check my downloads, they're now reset to the correct info.
Well I'm glad it is not just me. Thinking it was a bad ROM I reinstalled (with complete wipe) Modaco's ROM, then stock Froyo, etc.
Problem went away when I just said screw it and installed CM 5.0.8.
The only problem that persists now is the server error going to the downloads tab of the market. I can't seem to lick that one even though apps download and install fine from the market.
On a side note CM5.0.8 still is snappier than Froyo. I'm salivating at the thought of CM6.
If anyone is also getting persistent errors with the market downloads tab, please chime in. I find it suspicious that I'm having this problem regardless of which ROM is installed.

No matter what I do I still get the server error in the Android Market application when I go to the downloads tab.
I've re-flashed the Froyo Radio and tried both CM 5.0.8 and Froyo.
I don't see others complaining about this so I have to imagine there's something wrong on my end. I just don't know how to diagnose it. Does anyone have any ideas? At All?

I did see that in the CM 5.0.8 ROM, but Froyo is a complete no-go. I've reflashed the radio, and have been using Modaco's ROM because it is the only one I know of that is just a rooted update I can flash with Amon-RA's recovery, but still no luck.
This is scary.
UPDATE
I went all the way back to Stock, Unrooted 2.1 from January, and still get the server error in the downloads page of the Market app. So for giggles, I wiped, created a new gmail account, and lo and behold, everything works. I could download apps, and they showed up in the download tab as installed.
That pretty much puts an end to thinking it's an app/ROM/radio problem, I think.
I then wiped again, went through initial setup with my primary Google account and I'm back to server errors on the downloads tab.
I guess maybe it really IS a server error. Don't know what I can do about it, except gripe...but at least I can stop scratching my head over what ROM/Radio is installed.
After several days of experimenting, the fact is that on any Froyo rom, whether it's stock or rooted, google's or cyanogen's, wiped or not wiped, new gmail account or existing gmail account, what I'm seeing is that, even if I wipe, go into Android and DO NOT enter a google account, going straight to settings | Manage Applications | running applications, shows "Computing..." forever.
Now, if I do a full wipe, it doesn't know anything about my account, right? And the cache, and all that are all wiped. So, what could possibly cause the infinite "Computing..." in the apps?
Does anyone know?
It happened to me as well last night. I was installing an apk (updating over an older version), and it showed "Installing...." forever. No hardware button gave me any response and I eventually had to reboot the machine by pressing the 3 buttons (luckily this worked. I really hate the thought of pulling the battery out...). After the reboot I tried again and it installed without a problem.
I m on a stock Nexus One FRF91, never hv an issue b4 that latest system update. Looks like it is bringing more issues to me...
what 3 buttons reboot the phone?
The same thing is happening to me. When trying to install any market app, it just hangs at "installing. I have to reboot the phone to get it to stop doing it.
Every once in a while, about 1 out of 15 times, I can get an app to install correctly and quickly, but all the other times it hangs.
It started happening when going to froyo. I have tried several different froyo mods and the same thing happens on all of them. When I nandroid back to 2.1 it is fine.
It happens to me with the Rodriguezstyle mod, the Kang-O_rama mod and the evil n-one shot Noir mod.
In order to fix this issue. You MUST do the following steps:
1. Wipe the SD card.
2. Wipe ext partition (if there)
3. Delete spareparts if you have it ANYWHERE on the system
4. Reboot the system into recovery
5. Wipe all cache's
Tada! Fixed!
This fixed it for me on Kang-O-Rama.
I belive the problem is when moving ROMs and the new app2SD feature stores files on the SD. When moving ROM's, it try's to scan them but fails. Something is stuck in a loop and wont stop .
When taking out the SD card, it ALL works flawlessly (give it a go if you need to install some apps to help)

Press the trackball, volume down and the power button all at the same time.
If you have root then the app quick boot is a one click solution.
When I was or do have a stalling at the install. I clear the market data and this works for me. I also try to keep the cache clear.

market.android.com

has anyoen gotten this to work on cm7?
Most of us all have it working perfectly.
Make sure your gapps is updated.
I haven't. when i sign into the website, it says no phone associated with the account. I might (if i'm really bored) reflash to the newest nightly with full wipe etc...
Nothing downloads, haha.
i was using the gapps that was made for the slide and it didnt work, i wiped and flashed the gapps that is delivered in the download manager and it works like a charm now.

I had to wipe and reinstalled from Recovery and it works just fine now for me. Installed app right away. I have been reading about people having delays in the actual install of the apps, so its nice to see it was pretty much immediate.

New market - automatic?

Is the new market pushed to our phones automatically? I'm on CM7.1 nightly. Just wondering if I should just install it manually or wait.
Thanks!
Why not install manually in any case?
Look for 3.0.27

Good point, not like it would make a difference. Thanks Jack.
is it still enormous? The last time I tried installing it the thing was 8mb in size...seriously hurt my poor n1's space-free so i uninstalled it.
It has always auto update for me. You can wipe data for market using TB to speed up the process.
If not you can manually install it, make no diffrent how you get it, work the same.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
wiped with TB, rebooted and received the new market
@disgustip8ted If you are rooted and have Titanium Backup installed (you might need the pay version... I can't remember), you can select these updates and merge them back into the ROM to replace the original market. This will clear up all that space.
@baseballfanz My market update worked every time except for this last one. I was at the old one until I decided to wipe and update my gapps to T's latest unofficial gapps file with the #151.
Uninstalled it too. New Market was too slow and clunky for me.

[Q] Google Play Store w/out sim card?

So I recently picked up a cappy (SGH-i897) as a backup device.
Quickly realized it takes a normal sized sim instead of the one I've got in my GS3 (also ATT), so I have sim adapters coming.
I rooted using the corn kernal and clockwork recovery. SU is installed
Then I moved on to a different ROM -
First I wiped everything - cache, dalvik cache, full factory wipe, batt stats -
I flashed CM10 and the corresponding GApps from goo.im
No Play Store no Google anything I"m used to seeing on my GS3 with cm and gapps flashed-
So I wanted 10.1 anyway and I thought there was a possibility something went wrong with gapps -
I flashed cm 10.1 and the matching gapps again
Again still no play store - even if i manually install the play store (dl the .apk and install on the phone) it loads up and crashes instantly
Tried clearing the app's cache and clearing the app;s data - it just does the same thing - it pops up on the screen for a sec and dies
So my big ? is - Is this problem linked to me not having a sim card in the phone? Will the play store only work if you have one?
Any help is appreciated...

Rather than Google Play, your ROM probably has Android Market.
To get Google Play, it may be as simple as opening Android Market, which will tell you that you need to update to Google Play, which it will do for you. If not, then you need to download and the APK from somewhere. (Like here: http://www.droid-life.com/2012/03/06/download-new-google-play-store-version-3-4-6/)

No, he should be using Google Play since he's on Jellybean ROMs. If he was on Eclair/Froyo/GB I would say yes.
The fact of the matter is Play Store should be included in the gapps package you flashed and shouldn't be affected by whether you have a sim card installed or not. I would suggest verifying that you downloaded the correct gapps for the version you are using. If you did download the right one, maybe it was a bad download so try again.
thanks for the responses folks
i got gapps from the same place i got them from when i rooted and flashed cm to my gs3
goo.im
there's a chart on there that i used that shows you what gapps correspond to your version of cm
i'm on cm10.1 (kernel 3.0.54-geedcf0c) based off of android 4.2.1 and gapps -jb-20121212
anyone know if what order you flash it in makes a diff?
i flashed gapps first both times - right before cm
i will flash it again if someone thinks it will make a diff - not sure if i need a wipe and everything first or i can just do it
keep in mind - i actually google play in my apps tray - it just crashes every time i attempt to launch it

I would think gapps is a package of apk's mostly, and so flash only after everything else just like you would regular apps ( if you would be able to reach them..)

anyone know this from experience?

Glad you got the other stuff working. To answer your last question, technically yes that's all you have to do. I say technically because sometimes during a flash you can loose your imei or a couple other things.
But start by just trying to pop it in and if it doesn't work we can trouble shoot from there.

Broken (tk, open) gapps problem 505ing on all crucial updates

I cant seem to find a reliable gapps for CM12.1, SlimLP and Resurrection Remix. I have tried Dankomans slim mini, TkGapps, OpenGapps pico, nano, full, they all install just fine but then when the system boots and i try to login to the play store to update my apps they all start 505ing and its usually just google apps and services, i seem to be able to install other non google apps just fine.
If someone could help point me in the right direction i'd really appreciate it, ive been flashing for hours, im at my wits end. :crying::crying::crying:

Open GAaps arm/5.1/nano works fine. Your problem lies elsewhere. Be sure to do a full wipe and flash GAaps concurrent with rom. Leave FlashFire defaults alone.
I tried to use Open Gapps and it didnt work for SlimLP, so I installed CM12.1 with Open Gapps, I am getting the same problems with CM12.1, So i said lets try another rom, I installed Resurrection Remix, same problem, so i tried tkgapps same thing. why is it 505ing with every gapps package and rom that i Use? is there something im doing wrong? Perhaps the newer builds on open gapps have probelms? Should i try an older build? I am using flashfire 0.53
Here is what i do when flashing list order first to last:
1. Wipe: System Data, 3rd Party apps, Dalvik, Internal storage, Cache Partition
2. Install Rom.xxx.zip (default ff settings)
3. install SuperSU (default settings)(if necessary)
4. Install Gapps package (Default ff settings)
everything goes through smoothly, i get to a good running environment. Then, once I add my google account and open the store, it attempts to check for updates. Updates are usually available for google webview etc, they all fail with a 505. Tried, removing account then signing back in, changing time, clearing cache stopping processes, nothing seems to solve the issue.
so ive finally encountered a solution to at least get everything running. Install CM12.1 with TKgapps (tk_gapps-modular-pico(uni)-5.1.1-20150920-signed.zip) NOT opengapps. Not sure why opengapps isnt working right now but its not, with no rom that i have tried (fire 7" 2015) other versions of tkgapps didnt work either they also 505ed on me, but these ones work great.
You can find them here:
https://basketbuild.com/devs/osm0sis/gapps
Still hoping for good working gapps for SlimLP (my favorite so far)
yeah... so even after all of that, i woke up just to find it 505ing again. fml.
i have never had this problem with any rom for any other device, EVER. this is so frustrating.
I gave up on finding a fully functional gapps package for any roms on this device. What I did is just force update every apk 505ing on me through ADB. Everything is running smoothly now. Will update if anything changes. (should have done this like 5 hours ago... but when you are tired you dont think straight... hahahaha)

Sorry to hear of all the problems w/GAaps packages. Seems to be a 1-off as a large community uses Open GAaps on this device w/o issue. Multiple ROMs.
