You know how the nook color doesn't have a status light of its own. I think it is on the plug itself (the supplied cable), thats what one of those extra pins in the USB port might be for. So the nook can communicate with the LED in the plug.
I guess i am crazy, but we already knew this - the light turns green when charging is done, etc. i dont know if it can programmed to do more than that, but yes.. it is a status light..

Hi,
I Just noticed That when I plug it into my computer the nook charger has an orange/Yellow LED color, but when I plug it into another computer it has a green color - without any relation to how much battery he has.
At first I thought that orange means charging and green means full But apparently that's not true.
Thanks.
P.S

EDIT:
Figured out the problem, the other computer slow usb ports were just not fast enough to chrage it, so the nook charger lighted green
Today, for the first time, I noticed my Nook Color USB power cable had an illuminated red colored "n". And that was while the cable was unplugged from the Nook Color itself. (But, obviously, while plugged into the wall charger.)
I thought to unplug the charger from the AC wall power. It takes several seconds for the LED to stop glowing. I waited about 15 seconds after the light was not visible before I plugged the charger back into the AC socket. The cable glowed red again.
Upon plugging the cable into the Nook Color, the cable shows orange again. (As I'd expect, since it's been a couple of days since I last charged my Nook.) The battery icon on the top status bar is "filling", so I think it's actually charging.
I'm used to seeing a green "n" when the battery is full. And orange/amber/yellow when charging. Until today I have not seen a red "n" at all.
[Later, the same day... .]
I -do- find the battery is fully charging. I just have this funny feeling that I ought not leave this thing alone in the house, or take a nap, or whatever, charging. Somehow I think I'll end up on the nightly news... another "victim" of Lithium-Ion gone horribly wrong. ;-) I'll probably try, like some others I've now found via Google, to get B&N to replace the cord or charger.
Wonder if this has something to do with the poor quality of the charger? There is a thread about the chargers breaking easily and the plug bending and eventually breaking.
Just a thought...

I love both my Nooks (they serve different purposes) but the chargers/cables are very problematic. I had a perfectly working one with my first purchase but an accident destroyed the usb connector and B&N sent me a replacement. It worked for a couple of days and then died a slow death. I ordered a second Nook and got its cable confused with the third cable sent to replace the second defective one. Both worked fine, though, for a couple of days and then suddenly the N on one turned red while plugged in to the Nook or even connected to the computer. Tried it on two other Nooks and the same thing happened. So, I'll be calling in for my fourth replacement cable. I am very glad that I paid for the warranty; it has more than paid for itself with the replacement chargers/cables that B&N has sent to me.
On a side note, when I was waiting for the replacement cable and had no other Nook charging cable available, I used my Blackberry microusb charger to trickle charge the Nook. It literally took all night but at least it was up and running the next morning. It doesn't charge fast enough to use while running apps, as the battery discharges faster than the BB charger can charge the battery.
Again, I love my Nook, even with the charger/cable issues!
I'm running Froyo off the SD. Every since I've done that, I noticed that power cord never turns green when charging is finished at 100%. Has anyone else run into this problem as well?
Just scored another NC (used) to play with. (There's gonna be a 12-Step Program sooner or later for the Nookie-addicted!!) Anyhow, was charging this new toy and noticed something odd...the "U" (or "N" if you prefer) on the microUSB charger cable inserted in the bottom of the NC....it glowed "red" whilst charging! Wierd. The other cables (yeah, I know, mulitple NCs) glow yellow then green when charged.
Anyone else seen this? Not worried, just curious. (Actually it's kinda cool..)

Yeah, my sister brought her's over this weekend and the charger did the *red thing*. Thought I screwed something up for a second!
Her's was bought at Walmart and has the 2010 ser#.
Mine glows orange & green and was bought at B&N in Nov. 2004 ser#.
I think it glows red when you run it down so low that the Nook Color shuts down on reserve power. Yellow is the normal color when charging, and then green for fully charged (or when the cord is slightly ajar I've discovered).

This is correct. I've been there a couple of times. As you charge the red will turn orange/yellow & then green when fully charged. It has to be discharged to the point that it won't stay on for the red to show.
Red "N" on USB Cable
I have one of a few known Nook Color USB cables which glows red when unplugged. It just started one day and has never stopped. I think a normal Nook Color USB cable is dark (unlit) when unplugged.
Having said that I'll add this: The red LED seems to be on always. So when the Nook is charging the normal orange color has a distinct red tint to it. And when the Nook Color is full the normal green color has more of a yellow (but not very orange) tint.
This seems moot as the Nook charges fully and otherwise works well. The cable problem occurred before I rooted or installed CM6 RC4.
My USB cable is red now(the little N light on it). Before it would either be green or orange but now when the nook is not connected, it's on and red. Why? Anyone know? Is this a problem?
mine has been doing that too, but it still charging, so I didn't think any thing of it...

Mines charging as well but I figure a red light like that must mean something and I'm worried that the cable could be damaged and charging my battery incorrectly.
I emailed customer service at Barnes and noble to see what they say. apparently poll who don't root it who have asked on their forums have the same problem, but there was never any real solution/answer.
They replied with the following
We are sorry you are experiencing problems with the charger for your NOOK Color and we are eager to assist you.
If your NOOK Color is plugged in via USB to a computer, try plugging the cable into a different USB Port; a red light generally indicates "no connection." You may also want to try plugging your NOOK Color into the AC Adapter and charge it via a wall socket.
If your NOOK Color is plugged into the AC Adapter and is charging via the wall socket, make sure that the USB cable is connected properly and it is not loose on either end. If the light is still red, the cable may be defective.
We reviewed your email, and based on the information you provided, we feel that we may need to process a warranty claim for you. Before we can get started, we need to speak with you to verify certain information about your device, and to make doubly sure that we understand the problem.
We ask that you call us at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665) and select option 2 for NOOK Support. We are available Monday through Friday from 8AM to 11PM EST, Saturdays and Sundays 9AM to 11PM EST. Customers outside of the United States may contact us at 201-559-3882.

based on their description, I think they are saying if it's plugged in to the charger and the nook and red, then it's bad. not if it's not plugged in...
Guess I will call them tomorrow and see if that is correct.
Mine spent the last couple of weeks failing in very weird ways, finally being dark, red, amber, or green depending on just how I held it. New cable fixed it up.
The really bizarre thing was that it kept the same "plugged in" state it had at boot time; if I plugged it in and booted, it thought it was plugged in forever, and if it was unplugged at boot, it never charged or thought it was plugged in at all. USB mounting didn't work no matter what state it was in.
I think that the software has more to do with charging than I thought.

i have emailed support back and forth a couple of times. this was their final reply to my "no nook plugged-in and the cable is red"
We are happy to inform you that, the charging cable of your NOOK Color is not defective at all.
The red light only indicates that your NOOK Color is not connected or not plugged to the charger.

hope it helps if anyone is having concerns about their cable and or charging issues.

Just got my nook, and my cable won't light up at all. When I turned off the room lights, I can see a very low orange dim. My unit won't even charged. I may have to buy a new cable. there were alot of bad comments on the B&N site about the defective cables.
I hate proprietary cables, and the fact that if it breaks, I'm SOL until I get a replacement.

Why buy one? Go to B&N with your cable, charger, and NC and you'll walk out with the appropriate component. Most likely the cable, but it's possible the charger is bad. There have been cases where they don't have any to hand out and they have to ship it, but either way you don't have to buy one.

It will charge and communicate via a standard USB cable, but it will of course take much larger to charge.
So, I thought I see if anyone else has had this issue with the Nook charger. My first charger stopped lighting up correctly (not turning green when charged). The LED actually never changes from amber, even when the nook is not plugged in. It also stays dimly lit for about 60-120s after the cable is unplugged from the wall. It still provides the normal charge, but I'm scared to use it. I had this replaced (and the replacement is now broken - arg), but I was wondering if it might be safe to use.

Recently acquired certified pre-owned Nook Color, but there is a issue: at any level of the battery charging, the green light is lit on the cord, although it should be orange if the battery is not fully charged. While charging is normal (~ 3 hours 15-100%). In what could be the problem? Very uncomfortable, because is not visible when the device is fully charged.
Previously, I had another NC, which worked fine.
Maybe someone else had this problem? How to solve it? Really need help.
Thanks in advance.

Is this with stock B&N ROM? If not stock, which ROM are you using... some, myself included, have seen carging issues with certain configurations, although I cannot say specifically that my configuration is not causing the issue I see,

In normal charging operation the light is orange until fully charged then turns green. In CM7 the led would turn green and stay green all the time when Host mode (otg) is activated using Nook Tweaks even when charging. In CM9/10 host mode is activated by default. Root hub is present and host mode is active but the encore otg module is not installed, thus we don't have USB otg yet. So, in a nutshell, having the green led on all the time doesn't indicate anything wrong with the charger/cable. I just charge it overnight or plug it in when it gets to 15 percent when the warning sounds the low battery alarm and unplug it when the lock screen indicated 100% charged.
Edit: If CM10 host mode is not activated by default the setting is a remnant of CM7 Nook Tweaks host mode setting.
Update: Tested the charger/cable from my other Nook with CM7 - light is orange when charging, green when fully charge on CM7. Tested same charger/cable on Nook with CM10- light stays green during charging.
Update 12/28/12: Had to get a new charging cable today $14.95 plus tax. The micro pins bent and broke when nook fell off table while charging.
The new cable now shows orange when charging. So issue may well be a bad cable after all. New cable shows green when fully charged.

I had the same problem with my Nook Color and it turned out being the cable. If you have noticed, the configuration of the micro USB connector is different than what you see with say a Motorola Droid. This makes the cable a little more difficult to get plugged in and can cause some damage to the pin arrangement if forced. I called B&N and complained and they sent me a new cable free of charge. I keep the old cable as a spare as it works well other than the indicator.
As a side note, I have used various versions including stock, rooted stock, CM7, and CM10 and the problem appeared to be independent of the ROM being used.
I just got a new cable and the indicator stays orange when fully charged. My old cable still works fine (orange while charging, green when charged), but the plastic at the micro-USB end is splitting apart. I have a piece of clear tape holding it together.
I guess as long as they keep actually charging the device, I can't complain too much.
ETA: On stock rom you can still see if it's charged by unlocking and tapping the lower right corner where the battery icon is. The Quick Settings pop up and show % charged.
