Hey I got a quick question with hero themes, I read a lot on the forums that if you flash from xxx to hero or hero to xxx you have to wipe but I didn't know if that applied to hero-esque themes. I just hate wiping my phone and I understand there is the backup for root and mybackup pro but I rather not mess with that. I am running cyan 4.0.2 and want to use the HE-Aero 1.5 theme.
Any help would be appreciated!
Just try it... if you have problems wipe, then reflash. Nandroid is your friend.
If the theme zip is just the theme and not the whole rom then you dont need to wipe but if it is the full rom then you have to wipe, or you can try that fixed permissions thing, its a thread somewhere in the dev forum i think. if the zip is between 10-20mb then its just the theme and you dont need to wipe
Problems occur when flashing from a htc ROM to a Google based one.
If it's just a theme "update" and it's for your ROM then you shouldn't have to wipe.

I stumbled across this...so here ya go.
thanks a bunch guys
I don't really understand the way themes work. Do they just replaced some of the resource files? Or do they replaced some of the apks? Then How do I cleanly remove a theme? Just flash the same version of ROM back? Won't there be some files only belong to the theme itself still left in the phone?
And what will happen when I try to upgrade the Rom with a theme installed? Will it roll back to the original theme, as all the resource replaced with the new Rom? And if I still want to use this theme, just flash one with the new version?
I am just confused, will themes add files not belong to the rom itself, then just upgrade or reflash without a wipe might not be able to clean the theme. But a wipe is the last thing I am gonna do.
Right now, I am using CM 4.01 with Teds Hero Theme, and I really want to upgrade to CM 4.02, but these questions confused me for a long time, I just need a positive answer, then I can flash and move on.
Thanks
A theme has modified images and files of the rom. when you flash a theme it writes over the original files with the edited ones. you should be ok with flashing cm 4.0.2 then flashing the 4.0.2 version of your theme.
If you are really curious what all a theme changes just open up your theme and look at what files are in it.
plain jane answer to your question.
make a nandroid backup (that way if something does go wrong you have a stable version to go back to if you are not ready to wipe to fix it)
flash cm 4.0.2
flash 4.0.2 version of theme.
if nothing goes wrong then you are good
Thanks for the reply, I'm going to give it a try~
If i flash another theme will it delete my old theme?
I have a similar question that I hope someone can help me with.
I installed a theme which I no longer like. I prefer to use the stock Cyanogen theme. I have upgraded to Cyanogen 4.2.6 and the theme is no longer there however icons from the theme are still on my phone. I have done a wipe and it still did not help. How do I restore the Cyanogen icons?

did you wipe your ext partition? i am guessing, no. boot into recovery, wipe your phone, wipe your ext partition, apply the recovery image that cyanogen gives you BEFORE YOU APPLY THE ROM. THEN ONCE YOU HAVE INSTALLED THAT RECOVERY IMAGE, FLASH THE ROM.

come on man, common sense.
OF COURSE IT WILL.
if its the google apps...just flash my template to revert
Alright I have spent plenty of time looking and have come across nothing. How do you revert back to the theme that original came with the Cyanogen mod?
You can flash the rom again. If you've flashed one of my themes, I usually include a template for the rom version you flashed for, meaning you can go back to original images that I replace with my theme.
I specify my themes because some themes change more than the open source images, and flashing my templates over them might not get you back to original, especially if they have themed google apps (gmail, youtube, market etc that are not included in the roms)
You'd have to do a complete reflash then, from htc1.6 base then rom.
If you are using cyanogen, you might have to install dev image, then cyanogen rom. I had to do that recently due to the fact that the theme changed more then it should've. If that still doesn't work, wipe, reflash all over again. Hope this helps...

After Cyanogen 4.2.7.1, I should install dev image, then Cyanogen rom.
If not, I always loose Market, Maps and Google Talks.
You could always make a nandroid backup before you apply a theme, then if you don't like it you can just restore your nandroid backup.
Quick run down:
Pretty new at all this stuff, flashed my first Custom ROM on Friday (sc 2.4non voodoo), then quickly upgraded to Sc 2.6 Voodoo. From that point I flashed my first Theme (VA Green), really like it but wanted to dab in some other ones just to get a feel. At that point I flashed right over the VA Green with the Black and White Super Light Theme. Everything seemed to have worked fine, but I realized it was a mixture of the two themes and that wasn't what I was going for (being the noob I am I thought the new theme would just 'over write' the existing theme). SO I decided it would be a good idea if I restored back to my Frankenclean 2.6 vd that I had backed up (no theme).
After doing this I downloaded and flashed the newest version of Honeycomb. It booted, but as soon as I unlock my screen; boom FC loops to no avail. I, then restored my Frankenclean 2.6 voodoo (no theme) and everything was cool. I thought it was just the Honeycomb theme, so I tried simply restoring my VA Green theme that I had backed up and this time I got FC loop, into boot loop.
So essentially the only thing I can run is my non-themed Franken 2.6 voodoo. I have tried to trouble shoot as much as possible and truly cannot figure out where I steered wrong. -- I did go into CwR---> Mount/Storage at one point and MAY have changed a thing or two, so if anyone knows what that screen should read that would be VERY helpful (as far as what is mounted/unmounted etc etc).
Lastly, (since I didn't make it very clear earlier) I did do a factory data wipe/cache wipe and davlik wipe before proceeding from one step to the next. I also do have plenty of personal data storage available (someone had told me that could be the issue).
I am close to just flashing over to a completely different ROM and starting over, if anyone has ANY clue on how to possibly fix this I would appreciate it much more than you know.
Big thanks in advance!

Personally, I would factory reset and start at square one with flashing a stock rom in odin, stock kernel, root, then install SC2.6 + patch, kernel, then VA Green. Search the development forum for the stock files.
Sorry bout that fellas, mod feel free to move.
Ok, I guess back to square one it is. Thanks guys
EDIT: Since phone is rooted, if I flash an all in 1 file (that includes root) will that cause any problems?

Nothing will happen, make sure you disable voodoo before you odin back to stock.

Will do that right now, thanks alot man.
Again, sorry for the noobish issues; and more importantly misplacement of the thread.
You CAN flash themes over other themes, they do overwrite eachother, but you need to wipe data in between or they can mix the two themes together like that.

Forgive my ignorance, but when you say data, you are referring to factory restet/data wipe right?
Then from that point would I reboot from my restored frankenclean 2.6voodoo, or just run the zip after the data wipe?
Thanks again

I dont think you should be "restoring" the 2.6v with rom manager (thats what it sounds like to me from your posts). I would red cwm install from zip after wiped cache and dalvik cache. Boot up your 2.6v and restore apps and settings only, not restore your rom backup. Then go back to red cwm, wipe cache and dalvik and install your theme zip. Basically the theme only overwrites specific apks that the dev picked. Hope this helps get you going in the right direction.
