[Q] Android phone or iPhone with Nook Color

I am new to android and the NC is my first device with the OS. I currently have a Storm 1 on Verizon and I hate it. I love Verizon's network but hate hate hate my phone. I'm out of contract and ready for a new phone.
With all the Verizon iPhone rumors, I'm conflicted. Do I get an iPhone when it most likely arrives on Verizon or an android phone that is already there to go along with the NC?
I'm asking this here as you all seem to know so much about android and the NC. I want to tether whatever phone I get to the NC. I'm a mac user solely and like the compatibility there and would have gotten an iPhone immediately a year ago. Now, after experiencing android, I'm not so sure anymore that I even need or want the iPhone.
What are your thoughts on the two paths in regards to phone/NC compatibility and also to a Mac/phone/NC relationship? I really want to sync data between all three fairly seamlessly. Would having devices running different OS's make things too tough or are there enough cross platform apps and functionality to make it not matter?
I fully understand that the NC's capabilities are a long ways from being fully tapped. This might also be moot as both probably can serve my purposes. Figured I would pick your brains and experiences.

I have a Mac, iPhone 4 and NC right now and love all three. Apple's stuff are sexy and reliable but closed off. Android is less mature and lacks polish but has so much more potential. When I'm ready for my next phone, I'll look long and hard at an Android. If you like to.customize, I'd say go android. But I love my iPhone. You'll need to jailbreak it to unleash its potential.

This is exactly my setup, Mac, iPhone, NC. Syncing, one word - Dropbox. There is entire cottage industry around Dropbox, your Mac, and iOS devices. I don't think you'll be hard pressed to find exactly what you need right there.
But out of curiosity what are you going to be using the NC for, light word, excel type documents, pdf's? I use mine mostly to read ebooks/pdf's, 90%. There are a lot of things in the cloud that are fairly platform agnostic, Evernote comes to mind and different calendar sync apps. Just iTunes search for various one's to sync with google if want it to go with your NC.
As far as Verizon and iPhone, we'll just have to wait. In the US we have it bad, as iPhone (limited by att) does not tether. It's shocking, because in the rest of the world people tehter their iPhones.
I'd say go with iPhone, best of all worlds here, Mac, iOS with iPhone, and Android with the NC. What's not to love, you have it all. That's speaking as a Mac user of course.

Same. I love my i4 and I also love playing around with my rooted NC, I wish the phone could just dual boot both OS and I could be content with that magic phone for the rest of my life.

Each has his/her own preferences, it's really what you're looking for . . . I'd recommend spending time with a rooted android phone--not just the NookColor--before making a decision.
We're doing some amazing stuff here with the NookColor--considering what we started with--but this is barely scratching the surface of development on a device that's still running an eReader's stock ROM for crying out loud. That's not even to mention that it's based on (in tech years) an ancient version of android.
If you spend some time with a rooted Evo, Nexus S, or Droid X running a cyanogen ROM, I wouldn't even remotely say android is immature or lacks polish compared to iOS. If anything, I'd say it's the other way around.
I'm a former iPhone 4 and iPad owner, and I much prefer both my HTC Evo and the NookColor (even in its relatively primitive stage of development) over both of them (Plants vs Zombies is the only thing I miss, and it'll be on Android soon).
They say opinions are like a-holes: everybody has one . . . If that's the case, people having a-holes makes the world go 'round, because android would be much less interesting without iOS, and vice versa. I'd say go to stores where you can play with each OS' flagship devices for a while, check out the best each has to offer, and find what works for you.

I would actually say that stock android is better than stock iOS. But until android can support encryption out of box, I can't make the full switch because I can't sync with work.

As usual, ask a question like this and you will end up getting every response possible if you wait long enough.
I know folks who love their Iphones and tether with them here in the US. Jailbroken, or whatever its called and some custom stuff, of course. So I don't think that needs to be an issue in the choice.
Android phones have excellent qualities out of the box though, and once they start being rooted and rom'd- fantastic, as far as I am concerned. The ability to customize and make them YOURS instead of the CARRIERS (at least in function and appearance) is far and beyond anything I have seen on an Apple phone.
There are some advantages to either, as always- if you are on the fence then I too would suggest trying to "spend some time" with both and see if that helps make the decision.

I appreciate all the responses. I know that everybody is different, but it's still nice to hear others experiences regarding their setup.
I an an architect by trade and my mac is my lifeline to do all my drawings and graphics, etc. I'd be lost without it. I won't be a hardcore user with all three phone/mac/NC in regards to work. I mainly want email, music, movies, contacts, calander, etc. to be able to be sync'ed between all devices. I make a change in one and I can update in all three.
I've been playing with both iPhones and rooted Android phones and it really is a tossup. I do like the idea of having the iPhone so if there are special iOS apps, I can get it and have the NC for any special Android apps. Best of both worlds. I also really have to wait and see how the Verizon iPhone will be. I'll play with it in store for awhile before I make a choice.
Then the next question is do I wait for the 4G Android phones to come out on Verizon? I'm content to wait until late 1st quarter 2011 until the dust settles on some of this. I just wanted to get some feedback from people on how their NC's are working with their phones, iPhone and Android.

Why WP7 when we have Android?

Now don't get me wrong here I'm not trying to start any flame wars in any way. I would just like to gather thoughts on why would someone go with WP7 when Android seems to be kicking so much ass?

I'm a photographer, and I've had my eye on the Galaxy Tab for some time now in order to show off some of my work (mini portfolio) with clients when I'm out shooting.
Yesterday I walked into my local TMO store knowing that I was going to buy the Galaxy Tab, but I was not aware that they had a promotion going on with the Tab. Pretty much the deal was... buy a Galaxy Tab, and get a free Smart phone. I'm thinking that's cool! Turns out that the phones (Android) that were free were phones I've already owned, or pretty much didn't care for. So, the only phone left sticking out like a sore thumb was the HTC HD7.
Yeah, the phone is sexy, but it's a Windows phone, and why the hell would I want that, right? I mean, I owned the HD2, but it left me with such a bad taste in my mouth, and led me to sell it after 3 weeks. I just found it to be such a sluggish phone, Windows 6.5 was not doing it for me. Shame because it was a sexy phone as well.
Anyway, I took a chance with the HD7. I thought I'd play with it for a bit just to check out Windows new UI. I knew when picking the phone I'd sell it because I didn't want a Windows phone. I'm an ANDROID FANBOY! The money made from it would break me even for my Tab purchase. Sweet!
Guess what...? The phone is not going to sold, because I think I'm in love? I also feel like I'm cheating on my wife, or something. This phone ROCKS! Still not sure why I feel this way, but I do.
1. Phone is SEXY!
2. Love the layout of the UI.
3. It's just so damn smooth!
Yeah, it has a few I dislike...
1. Very weak Market, and what's up with the high prices?
2. Pink tint in the center of my photos when using the camera.
3. Facebook, Twitter, and browser all seem to run a bit sluggish.
I'm sure the above 2, and 3 can be fixed with an update, and 1 will grow with in time.
My only questions are...
What do I have to look forward to in the future with this phone/UI?
What can I do now?
Will WP7 have great support by Devs?
Should I say goodbye to Android?
Thoughts?

Have to say I have the HD2 and HD7 and love them both in their own ways. I agree the HD2 was a pile of poo with stock rom.. so much bloatware I'm surprised it even booted up! But with an NRG rom on it just rocked! Plus it ran Android really well from SD...
My new HD7 rocks in a different way. Yes the market is a little small and pricey right now - but so was the iPhone one at the beginning....
My only gripes are not being able to LOCALLY sync with my calendar on my PCand not being able to tether it to my netbook for internet access... give me those and I would be in heaven!!

I was Android fan too, until I saw WP7 phones. Yesterday I checked them in shop (I was reading and watching many videos), but Trophy blew my mind off!!! It's awesome!!! Android really sucks, compared to WP7

Honestly, I have tried to go back to android just b.c i do like the mytouch 4g(webcam, app quality/quanity, and wi-fi calling)
But i love my hd7
the mysense and android experience seems...so boring...no matter how much you replace launchers, root it or whatever
I LOVE WP7
i just really want them to get ringtones 2011 and better applications

I also tried going back to my Android before my 30-day return window was up for my HD7, but within an hour I couldn't even stand how sluggish it was compared to my HD7.
There is no question, I am sticking with my HD7 and will probably continue with some sort of WP7 device until they come out with something better.
HD7 (WP7) works smoother than any other phone out there including iPhone and is so much sleeker than every other OS. I absolutely love it.

How do you measure CPU performance on two different platforms? It's not like Linpack is available for WP7, is it?

Ya the experience is VERY good on the HD7! I'm an Android fan as well but REALLY am liking my WP7!

Im just saying in day 2 day experience
the overall experience with mytouch is sluggish vs hd7 smooth(only lags with games)

It has nothing to do with the CPU differences.
It is OS difference.

I'm an android fan got Desire HD, Tab and HD7, HD7 UI is fantastic very smooth. Screen animations brilliant but I'm afraid that's about it.
The browsing experience on HD7 is very poor a complete let down, pants. Picture quality not good. Battery life poor. Market phew complete rubbish compared to Android and that's being very kind.
If wp wants to catch up to Android it has to improve it's market and browsing experience otherwise it will never be popular as android.
Personally I would go with WP if the browser and apps can be fixed the other things can be tolerated as the ui and animation smoothness makes up for that.

i was a great android fan starting from(G1,MYTOUCH3G,....) to(GALAXY S DEVICES) but once i bought the HD7 i was in love with it.
Just cant wait for the update (NODO) next week and the other update (MANGO) in a month or 2.
I'm never going back to ANDROID.

Don't expect too much goodness with WP7. The updates will be meager at best. WP7 doesn't even have voice nav like WinMo did or any Android phone does. There's a lot missing in the way of features other than voice nav too. You can't use your own ringtones or any other ringtones. You can't do multi-tasking. You can't customize the UI like in Android. Most of the lauded features don't work. Like the live tiles, mine has never seen a live tile....other than letting me know I have a certain number of emails and such. The widgets in Android do a heck of a lot better at quickly displaying events than live tiles do.
I started out liking WP7 because of the quality of the UI (smoothness and cleanness). But I lost interest in it when it was announced that common features would be almost a year away. I'm currently not using my HD7 and it's sitting waiting for an Android ROM to be developed for it. As for the HD2 you had, it makes a superb Android phone. And with the HD2, you could have a different phone as often as you like. Currently my HD2 is an HTC DesireHD, which is a purely superb Android version.
When Android is available for the HD7, it will make an outstanding upgrade from the HD2 because of the software buttons. As for WP7, it's going in the trash. I loved WinMo 6.5 Pro, but WP7 has me buggered. Don't get me wrong, I love a closed system phone like the iPhone and like MS is doing with WP7. But I need at a minimum the common features available on smartphones today.

your bias is so obvious. Widgets doing a better job is your opinion. I have 4 live tiles just in my main screen, without scrolling down.

It's because the HTC Sense UI and other bloatware cause it to be sluggish that way. If it ran vanilla 2.2 it would be way faster. 2.2 on the G2 is much smoother and less laggy than the MyTouch 4G. I like HTC but I was disappointed with the compatibility with Sense UI and Android (although I think it was a great idea. It was poorly realized). But even if it ran faster it would still be plain... Vanilla. For now I'm happy with the HD7 and am looking forward to the bright future for WP7 :]. I mean if you think about it... this is 1.0 and compared to Android 1.0? phew!
2.3 Vanilla was pretty damn sexy though... but only because of the features. the UI for WP7 is my favorite from the rest.

The Fandroid comments make me laugh. I was one of the G1 day one users and there was SOO much crap said for Android. Oh it's going to fail, it's crap. Yadda Yadda. Some time later, Android became the power house that it is now. I've seen the progression of how Android grew. While it advanced to where it is now...It grew more and more boring for me. For people now jumping into the Android pool, it's amazing. But for day 1 adapters, it didn't have anything new/exciting to keep me around.
WP7 launches and of course everyone bashes, it doesn't have this, it doesn't have that. Does anyone remember Apples first iPhone launch? It wasn't amazing either, but look at it now. Yes the Kin was garbage. No one can arguee with that. Windows 6.5 may left a bad taste in people mouth with Windows Mobile OSs. But to some 6.5 was the powerhouse that they wanted and now love. People need to understand that this is Windows Phone 7 not Windows Mobile 7. New OS from the ground up.
Yes, it's lacking features, yes the market isn't strong compared to other. But people it's been out for 2 months. With the growth in developer support, devices, or support for updates, it has a chance to be a strong OS. The Xbox Live support alone makes it a big contender for games with the link to 360 users gamertags.
It comes down to time and growth. Give it till after the set of updates to then bash it. For me, Android didn't have anything to really offer me other then new handsets. Not a Blackberry fan and didn't really care for the iPhone. Never played with a Palm Pre so can't really say anything about it. I wanted something fresh and new. For me the Xbox 360 integration played a huge part in my decision, but the idea behind WP7 had me interested. So I followed it since the initial announcement to launch date in the UK to me actually playing with one in person. I'm happy with my purchase and am not looking back. Looking forward to the updates, growth, and future for WP7.

guy, i understand ppl like Android, WP7 or iOS... but i dont get those ppl who will buy a HD7 and *****ing about why it cant run android because of few missing features which we all knew will not be in till 2011....

Android for HD7

So I don't know why WP7 people feel the need to bash the ones who want android for this device. I'm an HD2 owner, have had android on it for basically the entire time I have owned it...and it's been awesome, because lets face it, Windows Mobile 6.5 was garbage. I recently dropped it and cracked the screen pretty severely, checked into getting it replaced by my $8/month phone insurance (which I have since cancelled), and they (not shockingly) advised me that they can no longer replace it with another HD2, but with a HD7 instead.
So I looked here first, wondering how easily I could put android on it and was shocked by the lack of android development, and the numerous attitudes towards it. Obviously it would be better/easier to get another "4.3" inch HTC phone that runs andro-crap", but I won't be able to do that for a couple of months and was looking at a quick fix. I'm just surprised that it hasn't been done, since it's been done on almost EVERY OTHER PHONE. I just don't get it. So I'm going to buy a digitizer and just replace the screen on my HD2. Just thought I would share my experience. Oh, and yes, I have played around with WP7, and while much better than 6.5 it's just not for me.

Throwing android on the HD2 was always going to be an improvement... I had an HD2 and threw WP7 on it, which is why I now have an HD7... But if you liked android and the HD2, why not get the Desire HD?
Gotta love the versatility of all these HTC devices though...
I think its human nature to want something different or odd... I'm sure if it were easy to get android or WP7 on an iphone, heaps would do it just to be different...

I agree with you completely. I'm in the exact same situation as I had a dual boot android/wp7 hd2 and the digitizer broke. Mostly I used android because of the apps, but I like wp7 better for it's sleek design.
I'm baffled how 75% of people on the hd7 threads can say 'JUST GO BUY A ANDROID PHONE" and "why would you want to dual boot an hd7?". I could buy an android phone but, stupid tmobile replaced my hd2 with an hd7 for free. it's a great phone, there are few which are better currently.
In the hd2 threads, most people wanted to push the limits and explore every possible option; that seems to be missing in large part from the hd7 threads. "just go buy an android phone" will never be the answer.

Otherwise, there is just very little interest in getting Android on this device, which means that it makes more sense to go buy an Android phone, because you're just going to be waiting a while for an Android solution, on a device/platform that does not need it as much as something like the HD2/WinMo did. Hence why there is little to no progress on getting Android on this device.

Because when I am able to get a new subsidized phone, it will definitely be something better than a Desire HD. I just have to wait for my contract to end first, which is in January.

The overall WP7 posse hardly resembles the WM crowd.
I've been a die hard Windows fan ever since my AT&T 8525-even before that with a couple PPC PDA's. When I lost that phone I replaced it with a Samsung Epix. Despite my horrible experience software fiascoes and the Epix, I still returned to Window's Mobile when I got my Tilt2. It was while I was dealing with my Epix that I discovered a cooked rom on a site that I had not previously heard of, XDA Developers. I now use this site a my primary guide to purchase new phones...if I can't hack it and install custom roms I have no interest in it.
Through my time with my Tilt2 I made some observations about the Windows Mobile community. Many of them were like me and had over time found many CABs that work well for them and were content with a platform that the were familiar with. Many of them were veteran programmers well versed in C++ and could really do some magic. Others just signed a two year contract with the cheapest old smart phones their provider was clearing out. What ever the reason we had our devices in a world where IOS and Android were rapidly taking over. Every one worked together and amazing things were accomplished. In the Touch Pro 2 forums, Android and Ubuntu was running, and a lot of you are familiar with everything that was done with the HD2. These things happened because WM fans by nature enjoyed doing them.
As Windows Mobile phones started to die off through breakage and device upgrades, a lot of my companions switch gears to the Iphone after it made great strides since the first gen EDGE only model, in OS capability, hardware performace, and a now enormous hacking community. Others who wanted remain anti Apple and wanted more freedom out of the box went with Android.
It finally came to my time in the begining of this year to upgrade. I knew very little about Windows Phone 7 devices except that I did not know a single person who owned one and that it was not backwards compatible with any of my software. Being completely anti Apple I began shopping around fully intending to buy an Android device. I started playing with floor models and I noticed one thing about every Android device. No matter how fast the hardware was, when I would touch and slide to unlock, there was always a noticeable lag. I found that to be a bad sign. Then when navigating the phones, they all lack the responsiveness of my wifes Iphone 4. So I tried the Windows Phone devices and they were all incredibly responsive. In all the menus and and web browser I slide my finger rapidly trying to out run the display and I swear I could not find any where that lagged. I was intrigued and hooked. After checking XDA and of all the WP7 phones available to me with AT&T, the HD7s was the only one with custom roms.
I believe this to be the only reason any of us here. Window Phone 7's foundation is simply flawless. Now that's not to say over all the OS is any where near perfect. It is severely lacking in software, customization, and even basic preferences. It is in these ways I've described WP7 as ever more "iPhone" than the iPhone itself. Now all this mean's is the biggest reason any body has a WP7 device is because the actually like it. So it's not far from reason there is little interest in changing operating systems. We've reached a point were all smart phones have virtually equal internal hardware so phone are chosen primarily based on software. The people who find themselves stuck with an HD7 against their liking are a very small fraction of an already small community. Those coming from an HD2 or a Rodium know that to get Anrdroid onto these devices took countless man hours from many very determined and very talented people working together. They just aren't with us here in the HD7 community. We are lucky to have the very talented developers that are here producing custom Windows ROMs.

Own android nd wm7/hd7
I agree with all of you but, with that said this is my take on it. I am using Simple Mobile $60 unlimited plan by the way just so everyone knows. I have both a htc hd7 with a 32gb sd in it- its running mango. I also have three android phones. HTC wildfire s in white, Samsung Vibrant, Htc mytouch 4g(my only 4g phone). Starting from the top. All my android phones have custom roms installed and are rooted. I love android as much as the next guy cause when I use those phones I love the apps and love that I have all of them nearly maxed out on there performance figures due to the roms and overclocking.
This being said all my android phones still can not keep up with my hd7 in everyday use when you talk about smoothness. Like the guy before me was saying as well how all the android phones he tested lagged when unlocking. That is still the same situation here with me after installing custom roms which did make the phones faster and after overclocking made then even faster. But even with my hd7 running a stock mango rom it still is the phone that I use most because of the smoothness and responsiveness that it has when using it for normal everyday smartphone activities like gps, internet browsing, watching videos, playing music, and texting and calling of course. This stock oem wm7.5 mango hd7 works better at all these things than any of my android phones.
This being said I would like to have android on the device as a dual boot that way I would get rid of my other android phones and just have this one phone for both. But, I would still use wm most of the time, which is the reason that I think ppl who own an hd7 or any other wm7 or 7.5 phone own them cause everything works great. and yes i agree with the other guy before me in saying that it does need more development in customizations and applications. but where it lacks here it makes up for in performance and ease of use. so in my opinion there is a plus and minus to both android phones and wm phones. the only question is which one will correct there downfalls first. apples will not be talked about with me cause i hate them but, as far as wm and droid go both need improvements.
Going with this thread this would be my reason for why i think no one has really developed an android system for this device yet cause unlike the android devices the hd7 does everything the way a smartphone should. I would dual boot but, i would never wipe wm7.5 off of it cause that would just be stupid and would be like downgrading. performance wise wm7 > android anyday until android fixes their laggy os.

Samsung will likely release a next gen tab in Barcelona. Will this mean minimal support for our tab?
I was a big defender of android for 2 years. But i have had it. Will switch over to iphone 5 and ipad 3. Our tab rom from Samsung is suboptimal to say the least. Still no ICS. App quality still sucks for business, science, musicians etc. Improvement too slow. I thought differently 6 months ago but now it seems we can not catch up to Apple ecosystem.
I am just trying to make a rational decision, no ideological arguments.

I agree.. I'm feeling frustrated from lag and the low support from my device. Yes Apple taking the full control for IOS.. But I realise that its for good.....

None of the roms for the 8.9 seem to display hdmi out correctly or have other significant issues.

well but that ain't really androids or samsungs fault. if someone designs a crappy app for android and a well working app for ios then of course it will look better on ios....
as for support. the older iphones aren't getting any updates and ipad1 is missing out on a lot of features that the ipad2 got via software. so it aint like android is all bad and ios is all good.
that being said, yeah samsung is being slow releasing stuff and touchwizz is bloated crap. they should try and please people releasing updates as fast as possible instead of bloating them and making them slower.

I've only owned my sgt 8.9 for a month and I think th nhardware is fantastic and going from iphone 3-4s and my wifes ipad 2 to this android and samsung show they can pull it off better than apple in most ways.... But.....
Time between releases isn't practical, the features of true clean android os (no samsung excess besides ebook) are fantastic but samsung kill it with touchwiz and excess compulsary samsung apps, and the market is great but also it's own worst enemy. (but we cant do anything about that because its un-regulated so to speak). Been muking around with custom roms and my hats off to the develooers as they're are really trying to polish up and bring us the best experience possible but they're relying on samsung to continue support but sadly they just are developing enough for our developers to improve on.
It's sad when a combination of 2 great products with both ability, style and funding can't bring it together and focus on fewer models or realeases to perfect something thats already almost there and really flex there muscles in the face of the competition.

agree, but that is why we need to consider the whole ecosystem that generates design standards, a sense of esthetics and professionalism and coolness...
samsung seems to push new bricks with better technology at a frantic speed but this does not improve usability. they are bad at engaging users and are terrible on the softwareside. It also seems that the ios ecosystem has the more demanding users that care less about tech and custom roms but overall usability.
I have my tab now for 5 months, there has not been a release of any appropriate rom by samsung for a 600$ Tablet! not acceptable...and my sgs i9000 is also not supported anymore by samsung...

I have an 8.9 and I feel your pain as well. I want Android to work out but it seems the manufacturers are only interested in the initial sale of the item, after that support dwindles quickly. Compare this to Apple who understands that your building a relationship with your customer. I think it sucks that the Kindle Fire has better support then the Galaxy Tab and most honeycomb devices.
App support with Android is poor at best. When compatibility has to be reviewed for each device by the developer (Hello hulu, netflix, & Gameloft!), you have a poor ecosystem. A number of really good games avail on the iPad do not even have Android the radar.
Still, I hang in there, because I don't like Apples restrictive system. Hoping manufacturers & developers will get on board and fix things. If it doesn't change in the next year though, I'm out and going back to iPad, because at the end of the day I want to use my device not hack it.

I can understand the frustration fully. I have an LG Optimus S, and my wife just upgraded off her Samsung Moment. Sometimes, vendor support for the latest version of android is minimal at best. In contrast, Apple EOLs their hardware, and there is no coming back from that. Every hardware update/major version release sees the previous oldest supported platform unsupported. Additionally, even the previous version sees missing features on the software side (ref iphone 4 + siri) that hafe been proven to run on the older platform.
Atleast with android, you can rely on strong dev communities to build new versions of the software in a timely manner. All weekend I ran the ICS alpha/beta and it is very nice!

I like my tab mainly for the size and form, and for 360 dollars it was a deal. It doesn't work any better them my Acer A500, which is more use full in the long run. Anyways my first android was the Samsung Moment which was terrible, htc hero, evo, nexus s, Acer A100, Acer A500, nook color, I pad 2, and now this 8.9. So I have had a lot of experience and I can surely say this is my last android mobile device. I'm tired of being a lab rat for these half baked devices all has had major problems. I don't want to have to rely on developers to fix things. I have only kept the I pad for a month and couldn't live without Google's services, but now I'm over it. Until they get more control over these manufactures to provide updates in a timely manor and manufactures fix their hardware I don't see a reason to stay. I guess the flexibility of android comes at a price and we all get burned.

This is a really interesting thread, because it portrays what I think would be a very different opinion versus if you asked the same question other in the dev board. And the different demographics involves paralleled a conversation I had the other day at work.
I am a complete Android head - half the appeal for me is tinkering with the thing. I see that as normal - no, actually I see that as a big part of the experience. I hate the iPad because it is so rigidly locked down in every respect. I had an iPad, but found it stifling and could get on with it even jailbroken.
I was shocked, however, when a girl at work gave a ten minute scathing diatribe on Android based on her experience with a low end Samsung phone. "But that was a low end Android phone!" I said. "It was bound to be slow and clunky. That's not a fair assessment of Android to base it on that experience. Plus, even if it was underpowered hardware, you probably could still have found a ROM for it out there that'd solve most of the problems you were having".
She didn't care. She just wanted the thing to work out of the box and her eyes glazed over when I started talking about ROMs.
It was a new perspective for me and I find myself recommending devices differently now. Time was I would have recommended the GT 8.9 unequivocally. The form factor plus hardware (in my opinion) beats anything else currently on the market. And I'd put my ICS equipped 8.9 up against any iPad in terms of user experience and I'd say it comes out on top. However, if you want a tablet that you get out of the box and use, it's not this one. The stock Samsung Android install is an abortion and unless you are happy to tweak (or have a family member who'll do it for you) it's not the device for you.
And therein lies the problem with 99% of Android devices on the market. Until vendors get over this need to differentiate their devices by adding layer after layer of bloat on top of Android, Android will continue to play second fiddle to iOS in terms of the user experience - even if that iOS user experience is rigidly controlled and prevents you from doing basic things like moving an icon a couple of spaces away from another.

I never had a problem with android until I lost my nexus one. Then I entered the world of other manufacturers devices. So far they all suck. HTC has the ****ty looking sense the I dare to define a great punch in the face to good design, Samsung is notoriously known for making good hardware but not giving a crap about the software, I'm not sure why this is, why they think that the software is not as important to the device. My next try will be with Asus, they seem to update their software on top of having decent hardware. This in regard of tablets for phones, i'll switch to a nexus device as soon as my HTC dies or the galaxy nexus comes to t-mobile.
I went through apple and i dont like the company. First of all i'm forced most of the time at work to use imacs to work on visual effects, i dont know where studio owners get their facts, but those machine sucks for production! They are designed for customers not professionals, they have the guts of a laptop and none of the benefits. Then i have a macbook that gave me nothing but hardware problems for 3 years, an iphone 4 that i can't use because its super locked to at&t and i used to have an ipod touch which died unexpectedly during a vacation. The only apple stuff i'm kinda happy about are my two ipods that still survive (and yet do not allow, me to officially get my music out of them).
So as you can see I'm fed up with apple and their shady hardware, they killed all the great professional stuff they had (shake, final cut pro, quicktime pro, apple servers and raids) and i don't think osx has any advantage over windows anymore either.
There are two faces to every coin, but I'm sure one day I will find a good tablet/phone/computer maker for my needs, it's just a trial and error job.

nice post mate. i totally agree with you and half the fun for me with android is the messing about and tweaking stuff. the only android phones i would recomend without thinking twice are the nexus series (because they are bloat free) and the s2 because its just and awesome device. but yeah if you have something more "consumerish" and don't feel like messing around with it you aren't gonna have the nices experience.
for the technologically unprepaired person an iProduct is probably better because it just works as they think it should (even though its awefully restrained and restricted)

i'm still running my n1 and loving it
as for apple machines for production...i have a lot to do in the video sector and we use macpros with final cut (7 not x )
i must say they are awesome machines but also have a few downsides.
they are friggin expensive (as everything apple)
they are not the error free devices everyone thinks they are. only last month we had 2 graphics cards dying 1 hdd giving up and 2 OS corruptions. so the myth about apple products not breaking down is...a myth!
so yeah if you are prepared to tinker i would go with android all the way. if you are my mum or someone else that just wants to USE something and not get involved with it...then i guess the i is the way to go.

I showed my stock skyrocket when I first bought it, she didn't even wanted to look.
Then I installed my preferred launcher (Launcher 7) and custom roms, lots of small tricks and clean ups (hid all the extra apps like Ti Backup, Root Explorer, etc.) and let the Windows Phone 7 interface dominate with big Twitter and Facebook buttons, Big camera and email button, weather. She was sold. She played with it while I was watching tv for a good while.
If the iPhone 5 will feature yet another 3.5" display, I'll take your phone no problem, she said.
I think the Android Interface, esp. the launcher, the widget handling, etc. leaves a lot to be desired. WP7 less is more approach works for some.

If you need an application that you cannot live without then go with ipad. You might be prepared that new ipad3 will blow ipad2 away but this is a bout making more and more money.
I was with Apple before Android. Now I am proud not following the iCrowd.
After stripping all bloatware and services my Sammy serves me well.
In regards to ICS I tried it on Xoom and didn't see anything vitally important.
It seems that in one year every piece of hardware becomes largely irrelevant and in two obsolete.

its still fck alpha so whats the point here??

If you like to use half finished products just not to follow the iCrowd than i am sorry for u... just that.

This phone is amazing!

Before I got the nexus 5 I was debating going back to ios. Now a month later that idea seems crazy to me. I am still in awe and shock about the functionality of this phone. I simply did not even think this level of customization was possible. Sometimes I get so excited when an iphone user asks me why I use android because I get to explain to them all the different functions. But in most cases I find it confuses them more than interest them. But that's fair, to each their own.
xposed framework and gravitybox are the only customizations I have put on this phone. And together with swiftkey, nova launcher, and the vanilla android this thing is a force to be reckoned with. 4.4.1 made the camera so much better and honestly at this point I can say this phone has gone above and beyond every single one of my expectations for a $700 phone, let alone 400.
Lastly, I just wanted to thank the xda community, you guys are f'ing awesome and the amount of support for this phone is unbelievable. And it's all done voluntarily and free of charge (although I feel everyone should donate). Consider my mind blown.

Have you tried the app Tasker?
If you like technical things and playing around with the phone that app is gold.

My programming-teacher uses apple products, which kinda surprised me at first. But he explained, that even though android may be more functional, you need to invest quite a lot of time for it to be really as customizable as people say - Time, that he as a teacher can't really spend. He'll rather spend 300$ more and have a phone that 'just works'. And indeed, from what I can tell, an uncustomized Android KitKat is pretty lame, even compared to iOS.
I'm comming from an SGS2 with CM 10.2 and I was actually pretty shocked how little an unrooted stock Android offers. Now, after investing some hours in driver issues, unlocking, rooting, searching for a good rom and flashing that, with several backups along the way, I'm really happy with my phone. But not everyone can or want to invest that much time or even has the expertise to do it.

Not to turn this into an IOS vs Android debate, but I no longer root or flash my nexus devices because I also want a device that 'just works'. With that said stock Android 'just works' these days. My devices are perfectly stable and do more than I desire even while 100% stock.

Yeah, without going flamewar and all that... I definitely think Android 4.0 and above on it's own is fine for the normal user just as much as iOS is. I don't feel like I NEED to do mods, they are just convenience or to more taylor the phone to how I want to use it. There are plenty of things that open your eyes to doing things a different way once you know about it. I think this is the general problem with ANY user, people just don't like change so if they got into the mentality of Windows or iOS then changing to another way is seen as cumbersome and time wasting when in reality it could be better. Hell if we all still were using DOS 6.22 we wouldn't be able to get some things done as fast as we do today and all that's possible because of change.
As said though, I don't try forcing people to anything specific. My wife has and likes Android devices, my mom has a Galaxy 3 and few of my friends has an iPhone 5 or Lumias all recommended by me.
As for the phone itself, i'm loving mine as well. I've had tons of phones from tons of different companies. I had Windows Mobile to Blackberry (old Bold and Curves, not new stuff) to Windows Phone to Android to Windows Phone to iOS to Android. I liked my Samsung Blackjack tons but definitely loving this phone more than my last Android devices (Nexus 4, HTC One, SGS3, SGS2, HTC Inspire HD, Nexus One, T-Mobile G1). Right now i'm pretty content even though the Moto G and X are pulling at me....

I've tried pretty much all of the roms for the N4 and N5. I'm happy now with stock 4.4.1 and Gravitybox. I've got all the tweaks I want really. I dread to think how much time i've spent flashing roms on this awesome phone instead of actually using it. It must be contagious though, my girlfriend just got an HTC One after years of being an iSheep

In all fairness, if somebody knows what they're doing you can root, add a custom recovery, xposed framework and gravitybox in probably less than half an hour. I would also argue that the stock android with nova launcher is more functional than the current ios. I would have completely agreed with you a couple of years ago, iphones just worked. But with the new android hardware and kitkat, the platform is just as stable an snappy as ios.

Since the advent of "Project Butter"and 4.2.x Jelly Bean, Pure Android phones no longer need to be rooted or fully customized for the average user to have an excellent mobile experience as they work quite well out of the box, so what your programming teacher states is just wrong. And the fact of he being a teacher, doesn't necessarily means he has deep knowledge about the features of every mobile OS out there.
Even though iOS and Android theoretically belong to the same OS family (Unix-Like), the concept of the iPhone and the Nexus are different as night and day.

Welcome to the Android fold again without turning this into a flame war just got my black Nexus 5 days 3 ago and I'm totally loving it coming from HTC I do not miss sense at all i agree that android has finally caught up with ios in terms of being functional out of the box and very nice to look at also. Great time to be an android user.

i rally like this phone. i'm sick of custom roms. people get too excited on xda for new things and don't realy remain objective. i don't know why the nexus (after the update, i know it has a few issues but it's pretty amazing now) would be a disapointment to anyone. there were great phones in the past and the nexus might not be that much better than an older phone in ways that matter but disapointment is harsh...
it's like in the military we used to say the best to bases are where you are going the the place you'd just come from. people rarely talk about the place they are now. when you get pcs'd every one tell you about they experiences they had there and build it up to be a real adventure. but when you get there all you have to talk about is your old friends at your old place maybe convincing someone going the other way it's better too. it's just human nature really...
as far as the arguments about apple "just working" well it does... so does your stock rom on your android.. it's nonsensical... it's not a reason not to chose android, but with that mentality there is no reason not to chose apple either.. so to each their own. just don't make it out to be that apple is soo much better in that regard.
a lot of android frustration is from people chosing the wrong mods to use.. i mean there are odex files on a stock phone for a reason... odex roms save space in data and are generally smoother running. deodexing and decompiling/recompiling often breaks things that might be minor but if you wonder why your android doens't run like ios... well it's probably not googles fault..

i had nexus 3 nexus 4 and niw nexus 5 my future device will be nexus 6 / i have an advice : if u want android for first time taste it only on NEXUS devices other android phones like Samsung , HTC , or etc...are piece of sh....t ! trust me

4.4.1 for the N5 is so good I just installed v4a for enhancing the headphones sound, everything else remains as stock. Great phone, one of the best i've had.

I would never criticize someone who chooses apple products. I use both platforms (android for phones, and apple for tablets) and enjoy using each device... yes, I actually love my ipad. Without competition, android would have stagnated ages ago... the best thing for android is apple, and the best thing for apple is android (from the perspective of the consumer).
Given that, I don't really see a fault with nexus devices. They are the most well-rounded android device you can find.
For the average user, it gets updates like clockwork and has a MUCH cleaner interface than OEM skins. Samsung is the worst when it comes to software that seems really really rough around the edges, it seems like their developers each work on their own part without really communicating with each other. To top it off, keeping a nexus fully stock is a rock solid experience.
For tinkerers and geeks, it also shines as the Godzilla-size dev community on a nexus produces absolute gold, with some very unique tweaks that cant be found on any other device. The latest version of android with all the tools to do whatever you want with it is a devs/geeks dream device.
It amuses me when people criticize the nexus devices and their users... then turn around and complain when their year-behind version of android OTA is delayed, not up to date with nexus devices, and comes with enough bloat to fill a landfill...or complain about how their carrier fixed the exploit they used to get root.

While i agree that rooting and getting everything how youd like does take some time and reading, using a toolkit it can all be accomplished within 15-20 minutes. However, stock android has gotten so good, that i wish Google would ask manufacturers to give us the option of running stock android out of the box. I had a n5, found a deal on an LG G2 so i returned the nexus. while the hardware on the G2 was amazing, the UI was fugly and slow. Rooted and on aosp, still wasnt as smooth as the N5, which brought me back.
