Before I got the nexus 5 I was debating going back to ios. Now a month later that idea seems crazy to me. I am still in awe and shock about the functionality of this phone. I simply did not even think this level of customization was possible. Sometimes I get so excited when an iphone user asks me why I use android because I get to explain to them all the different functions. But in most cases I find it confuses them more than interest them. But that's fair, to each their own.
xposed framework and gravitybox are the only customizations I have put on this phone. And together with swiftkey, nova launcher, and the vanilla android this thing is a force to be reckoned with. 4.4.1 made the camera so much better and honestly at this point I can say this phone has gone above and beyond every single one of my expectations for a $700 phone, let alone 400.
Lastly, I just wanted to thank the xda community, you guys are f'ing awesome and the amount of support for this phone is unbelievable. And it's all done voluntarily and free of charge (although I feel everyone should donate). Consider my mind blown.
Have you tried the app Tasker?
If you like technical things and playing around with the phone that app is gold.

My programming-teacher uses apple products, which kinda surprised me at first. But he explained, that even though android may be more functional, you need to invest quite a lot of time for it to be really as customizable as people say - Time, that he as a teacher can't really spend. He'll rather spend 300$ more and have a phone that 'just works'. And indeed, from what I can tell, an uncustomized Android KitKat is pretty lame, even compared to iOS.
I'm comming from an SGS2 with CM 10.2 and I was actually pretty shocked how little an unrooted stock Android offers. Now, after investing some hours in driver issues, unlocking, rooting, searching for a good rom and flashing that, with several backups along the way, I'm really happy with my phone. But not everyone can or want to invest that much time or even has the expertise to do it.

Not to turn this into an IOS vs Android debate, but I no longer root or flash my nexus devices because I also want a device that 'just works'. With that said stock Android 'just works' these days. My devices are perfectly stable and do more than I desire even while 100% stock.

Yeah, without going flamewar and all that... I definitely think Android 4.0 and above on it's own is fine for the normal user just as much as iOS is. I don't feel like I NEED to do mods, they are just convenience or to more taylor the phone to how I want to use it. There are plenty of things that open your eyes to doing things a different way once you know about it. I think this is the general problem with ANY user, people just don't like change so if they got into the mentality of Windows or iOS then changing to another way is seen as cumbersome and time wasting when in reality it could be better. Hell if we all still were using DOS 6.22 we wouldn't be able to get some things done as fast as we do today and all that's possible because of change.
As said though, I don't try forcing people to anything specific. My wife has and likes Android devices, my mom has a Galaxy 3 and few of my friends has an iPhone 5 or Lumias all recommended by me.
As for the phone itself, i'm loving mine as well. I've had tons of phones from tons of different companies. I had Windows Mobile to Blackberry (old Bold and Curves, not new stuff) to Windows Phone to Android to Windows Phone to iOS to Android. I liked my Samsung Blackjack tons but definitely loving this phone more than my last Android devices (Nexus 4, HTC One, SGS3, SGS2, HTC Inspire HD, Nexus One, T-Mobile G1). Right now i'm pretty content even though the Moto G and X are pulling at me....
I bought a Xperia Z1 and I'm spending more time on Nexus 5 board
Welcome to the Android fold again without turning this into a flame war just got my black Nexus 5 days 3 ago and I'm totally loving it coming from HTC I do not miss sense at all i agree that android has finally caught up with ios in terms of being functional out of the box and very nice to look at also. Great time to be an android user.

I've tried pretty much all of the roms for the N4 and N5. I'm happy now with stock 4.4.1 and Gravitybox. I've got all the tweaks I want really. I dread to think how much time i've spent flashing roms on this awesome phone instead of actually using it. It must be contagious though, my girlfriend just got an HTC One after years of being an iSheep

In all fairness, if somebody knows what they're doing you can root, add a custom recovery, xposed framework and gravitybox in probably less than half an hour. I would also argue that the stock android with nova launcher is more functional than the current ios. I would have completely agreed with you a couple of years ago, iphones just worked. But with the new android hardware and kitkat, the platform is just as stable an snappy as ios.

Since the advent of "Project Butter"and 4.2.x Jelly Bean, Pure Android phones no longer need to be rooted or fully customized for the average user to have an excellent mobile experience as they work quite well out of the box, so what your programming teacher states is just wrong. And the fact of he being a teacher, doesn't necessarily means he has deep knowledge about the features of every mobile OS out there.
Even though iOS and Android theoretically belong to the same OS family (Unix-Like), the concept of the iPhone and the Nexus are different as night and day.

+1 My first nexus and am absolute amazed
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
i rally like this phone. i'm sick of custom roms. people get too excited on xda for new things and don't realy remain objective. i don't know why the nexus (after the update, i know it has a few issues but it's pretty amazing now) would be a disapointment to anyone. there were great phones in the past and the nexus might not be that much better than an older phone in ways that matter but disapointment is harsh...
it's like in the military we used to say the best to bases are where you are going the the place you'd just come from. people rarely talk about the place they are now. when you get pcs'd every one tell you about they experiences they had there and build it up to be a real adventure. but when you get there all you have to talk about is your old friends at your old place maybe convincing someone going the other way it's better too. it's just human nature really...
as far as the arguments about apple "just working" well it does... so does your stock rom on your android.. it's nonsensical... it's not a reason not to chose android, but with that mentality there is no reason not to chose apple either.. so to each their own. just don't make it out to be that apple is soo much better in that regard.
a lot of android frustration is from people chosing the wrong mods to use.. i mean there are odex files on a stock phone for a reason... odex roms save space in data and are generally smoother running. deodexing and decompiling/recompiling often breaks things that might be minor but if you wonder why your android doens't run like ios... well it's probably not googles fault..
i had nexus 3 nexus 4 and niw nexus 5 my future device will be nexus 6 / i have an advice : if u want android for first time taste it only on NEXUS devices other android phones like Samsung , HTC , or etc...are piece of sh....t ! trust me
4.4.1 for the N5 is so good I just installed v4a for enhancing the headphones sound, everything else remains as stock. Great phone, one of the best i've had.
I would never criticize someone who chooses apple products. I use both platforms (android for phones, and apple for tablets) and enjoy using each device... yes, I actually love my ipad. Without competition, android would have stagnated ages ago... the best thing for android is apple, and the best thing for apple is android (from the perspective of the consumer).
Given that, I don't really see a fault with nexus devices. They are the most well-rounded android device you can find.
For the average user, it gets updates like clockwork and has a MUCH cleaner interface than OEM skins. Samsung is the worst when it comes to software that seems really really rough around the edges, it seems like their developers each work on their own part without really communicating with each other. To top it off, keeping a nexus fully stock is a rock solid experience.
For tinkerers and geeks, it also shines as the Godzilla-size dev community on a nexus produces absolute gold, with some very unique tweaks that cant be found on any other device. The latest version of android with all the tools to do whatever you want with it is a devs/geeks dream device.
It amuses me when people criticize the nexus devices and their users... then turn around and complain when their year-behind version of android OTA is delayed, not up to date with nexus devices, and comes with enough bloat to fill a landfill...or complain about how their carrier fixed the exploit they used to get root.
Looked on the play store but can't figure out what V4a is.

While i agree that rooting and getting everything how youd like does take some time and reading, using a toolkit it can all be accomplished within 15-20 minutes. However, stock android has gotten so good, that i wish Google would ask manufacturers to give us the option of running stock android out of the box. I had a n5, found a deal on an LG G2 so i returned the nexus. while the hardware on the G2 was amazing, the UI was fugly and slow. Rooted and on aosp, still wasnt as smooth as the N5, which brought me back.

I just read two similar postings to this, but I felt like I needed to give my opinions anyways. It's not exactly the same anyways.
Nexus One was Google's grand experiment. Some have considered it a failure due to sales numbers, some a success due to lack of marketing, some have lots to say about changing distribution channels, and the plusses and negatives.
But we are the test subjects here. And I'll tell you, coming from WinMo and a TP2, I was at first surprised and happy with my decision to impulse buy an experiment on a new OS. Speed, just-worksness, etc. My only negative was missing Sense. And then Modaco ported the Desire ROM, which I have to say isn't perfect but is 10x more stable than my old TP2 roms. I loved my phone.
However... being a test subject has worn on me. One: the first loved then panned screen, which I've heard everything from inferior coloring to last generation hardware on multitouch, none of which has bothered me, to the infuriating reception, which I have definitely been party to. Worst of all is the world class hardware HTC made to match the Iphone's style... matches it's weakness. I'm on my third N1. One broken digitizer, one broken LCD. Third one no problems so far. The LCD ridiculously while in my pocket.
And finally, the development community. One guy posted about the lack of comparitive stuff he could add from rooting. Any smartphone can add tethering. Porting Sense completed the phone for me, as I missed my smart dialing and weather clock. He got flamed for being demanding of devs, which I can understand on a dev community board... but I agree. The N1 was supposed to be the XDA's dream phone. Fastest updates, superior hardware... you could do anything with this phone. So we have a modified stock rom with additional features and RAM, Apps2SD, and ported Sense. Modaco is off for two weeks, and actually was hammering releases out daily for a while. But on my inferior TP2 they ported HD2 Roms, non HTC Roms, every new feature on any winmo phone... xda did that. They ported Android and convinced me to buy the n1! I am in no way complain about devs. Especially Cyanogen, Modaco, and that guy who has ported both Motoblur and Espresso and is now working on X10 Rom. I patiently await what they do. But all in all, developer response to N1 has been slow coming it would seem.
So to end my giant book post: how do you feel as an n1 user about your experience? The first legit google experience? I am not won over like an iphone fanboy. I am very dissappointed in customer service, and some hardware stuff. But overall I'm happy I made the Android jump. My only conclusion is that my next phone will not be from google dot come slash phone. It will be carrier branded. Rooting means I'll get updates fast anyways, and sales will be so much higher I expect that development will be more active. How do you all feel?
What exactly do you want to be developed? Do you want us Android users to port the lackluster Windows Mobile over to our devices? Is this what you expect?
MOTO Blur can't be correctly ported because of key mapping, and even so the resolution would be off without any current Android devices having MOTO Blur on a big screen, same goes for Espresso. X10 is in the making, as it also has button matching issues. Which are now being figured out.
You seem to be an intelligent person, someone who is smart enough to notice that this phone has been out for less that 4 months - which obviously means there is much to be left discovered. Your post, and this thread, are both pathetic. You act as if developing takes a small flick of the wrist, and as if the developers are not actually "trying" or pushing out more things that tickle your fancy fast enough - exactly what are you expecting? Also, please note that Windows has the ability to boot both Linux and itself, which im sure is a little relevant.
Why don't you wait a little while and see how things play out before making these little rant threads that are not needed..
What else do u want to do that hasn't been done or worked on?

I love my Nexus one.
If you buy a phone for what MIGHT come, you've bought the wrong phone.
[QUOTE=trevorwhopkins;6187241 I am very dissappointed in customer service, and some hardware stuffl?[/QUOTE
You had to know you'd be flamed for your thoughts (although all valid opinions), but I can't see how you point out customer service as an issue when you're on your third (I assume free replacement) N1.
Regarding the community and development: I think this time around the community and devs knew what was needed based on prior android custom roms. Things like tethering, multitouch, rotating homescreen, launncher with an extra column, A2SD etc. were all released within a very reasonable timeframe. Then there were things like custom notification colors which didn't take much time to come out, either.
The phone is not perfect, and 99% of my frustrations seem to he simply a design flaw (aka hardware issue) where the normal/comfortable position to hold it creates a false/unintended pressz of the touchscreen resulting in random presses - which many blame software on while never realizing they simply need to adjust how they hold the phone. I learned to adjust, which I think everyone has to do for every phone (learn its quirks and adjust accordingly).
Disappointed? Not at all...overpriced? Maybe...glad I'm still the only one I know who has it? Hell yeah!
Fair post but good luck suggesting to many people at xda that their phone isn't the be-all end-all of mobile device development, its like telling a parent their kid is ugly, there's no reason or objectivity involved so youll be made to look soulless. : )
I personally couldn't care less about xda participation. However I am a little disappointed every time a new bug comes up and it turns out its regarding outdated hardware, in that department I did expect a little more. It's disappointing that we have an old screen and what not, surely Google didn't think users wouldn't discover and discuss the copious problems with the phone...
And I do feel like a beta tester. It does feel like the phone was rushed to the public. But this software is still awesome and ultimately we do have some solid hardware to work with and if Google wants to they can make this phone as stable and pleasurable as they advertised it to be. I am so incredibly curious to know what android has been doing lately, the folks there are historically bad at keeping secrets (thankfully) so they have either tightened security or they have been staring at the wall. I'm guessing the former and I can't wait. For a while after the bugs and shortcomings for this phone began to mount I turned my attention to the iPhone, lucky for android the iPhone OS 4.0 is not impressive. As long as the hardware isn't either, android can string me along for a good while.
I really don't know what to think. Google is making no effort to advertise the phone (for good reason at this point), and they are silent to all of the problems that have come up. I'm starting to think Google wishes the nexus would go away so they could try again...

YAWN...
You didn't add anything new to what was posted before. It's just a bunch of empty thoughts.
What is it that you want????
As I said before, we have the most up-to-date version of Android already, we can't anything new if we don't fully understand the changes.
This is just about as open a platform as we will ever see, learn to fix/add what you want.
Here is what I ask? At the time the Nexus came out, what phone was better? Iphone... uhm no. Touchpro2... not a chance. Moto Droid? Inferior hardware. The bottom line is, even with a few problems the Nexus has, it is still a top 5 phone, if not the best phone there is. I can honestly say, for T-Mobile, there is not a single phone offered that I would rather have. I can think of ONE other phone I'd consider getting outside T-Mobile and thats a phone that isn't out yet (Evo 4g). Come on man, do you want the phone to mow your lawn for you? It's an incredible device.
Oh and judging the quality of a phone based on sales figures is retarded. I don't care if it only sold one phone, if its a great phone its a great phone.

I agree with you. Unlike the G1, we aren't trying to backport 2.1 features or build ROMs with as many things working in 2.1 as we can.
People like Sense, good for them. Personally, I don't care for it in the least. I like a few of the visuals of the status bar from it, which is why I kanged them, but I don't really care at all for the rest of it.
I'm running stock right know.. you know why? Because 2.1 is already the best Android experience! Like Eclair said, I don't get what you want right now.. Yes, the G1 and Magic have alot more ROMS out there but most of them are just 2.1 port attempts! They're trying to get what we already have on our phones. Just to further echo some common sentiments, the phone has only been out for a few months whereas the G1 has been out for a year and a half.. Don't worry, the development will come.. You should feel assured in the fact that many of the top G1/Magic devs switched over to the N1, it was one of the reasons I chose the Nexus over waiting for phones like the Desire.
All that said, I definitely am disappointed with a few things: The various hardware issues that have been popping up amongst different users (I personally have the purple tint issue), and the lagginess of the homescreen swiping. While the 2.1 is very fast in terms of app to app switching or web browsing, it lacks the polish that I hoped 2.1 would have (ie. like the iPhone). Yea, I know things like smooth scrolling on the iPhone are just eye candy, but it matters. It's what appeals to the masses.
An example, I have a non-techie friend who has played around with my Magic before (The Magic was running CursorSense). When he first played around with the N1 his first response was "How come this phone is slower than your Magic, I thought you payed $600 for it?".. He was referring to the scrolling. Of course after I showed him a few neat things (live walls, 3d launcher and gallery etc) he changed his mind but the point remains, the N1 doesn't leave the best first impression.
Overall I am happy with it although I feel it is definitely over priced. But the hardware is built for the future so I'm know that the software updates and future xda development will make it an investment that was worth taking!
Obviously the marketing (lack of) cant have helped sales. Putting it out first on Tmo was a mistake because it severly limited its market even among those who knew about it due to the lack of coverage. I think a traditional carrier launch on either AT&T or Verizon would have moved a lot of handsets. I think Google isnt stupid and they knew these things going in so they had their reasons.
Im not getting the slow development complaints. Its been 4 months. None of the other devices I had saw development that was faster in their intial months of release. At least not as I could notice, I freely admit I wasnt counting roms/apps and logging them in a database.
Personally I dont feel qualified to comment in great detail on a phone I picked up yesterday but I can say I dont regret it at all now that I have hardware in hand. It pretty much rocks as is and I for one am confident that good things are coming and its going to get better.
I will be returning my Nexus One to HTC for repair/replacement due to a faulty power button.
My only real gripe with the phone itself is that the power button is used to sleep & wake the device by default. There is no single button more important than the power button, imho, and it was a poor choice for HTC to design it so.
I take that back, the other huge gripe I have about the phone is HTC's decision to embed the radio antenna at the base of the phone where it is covered by the meaty part of the hand while holding the phone to your ear. Maybe they just assumed everyone would use the headset or bluetooth, but I don't. It is annoying to see it drop a bar of signal because I'm holding the phone naturally in the palm of my hand.
Once I get my replacement phone, I will not be unlocking or rooting it. I will be keeping it intact (and possibly sealed) until this summer, when I can see the next gen iPhone in action, and possibly as late as November, as Windows Phone 7 is already shaping up to be pretty slick.
Here are the things I want in my phone:
1. Just works. Most important thing. Dialer, Contacts, Bluetooth, etc. These things should just be a flick of the finger away.
2. Feature-rich. Integrated search, multi-touch browsing and maps, GPS nav, Native Internet Tethering (bugs the **** out of me that Android doesn't offer this OOB still).
3. Business AND pleasure - don't make me choose between personal email and contacts and enterprise features. HTC has saved Google's ass on this one with their amazing Sense framework from the Desire ROM. Exchange with ActiveSync is a MUST. Also where's the love for Blackberry mail server?? I guess Android is not for law firms? /shrug
4. When something says "Full web browsing", if it doesn't include Flash, HTML5, or Silverlight support, that's false advertising.
Other stuff:
I'm starting to write my apps for Windows Phone 7 SDK, I have been writing apps for the iPhone OS (now looking at iPhone OS 4 beta SDK), and I have written a few for Android.
The Windows Phone 7 SDK using Visual Studio 2010 is bread and butter for me -- its perfect. Working with Xcode on the iPhone SDK always felt clunky, and inefficient. Working with Eclipse on the Android SDK has come a *long* way since I started two years ago, and is much easier now than then.
But VS 2010 makes writing apps for WinPhone7 dead simple. I've already ported across my apps from the iPhone and Android platforms without any 3rd party cross-compilers, and it took a very short period of time.
These days it is the ecosystem that drives the market for handheld devices. iTunes made iPod what it is. The iPhone App store with 180,000+ apps made the iPhone platform what it is (we all know it certainly was nice hardware when it was released, but is definitely dated now). The Android Market has been a blessing and a curse for Android. Many solid apps, but no unified Android platform to develop for (to be addressed in Froyo -- or so they say). No single set of hardware to develop for. It's literally like shooting at a moving target. And developing with open source tools is fun for a while, but gets tiresome when there is so much more effort involved in some of the simplest things.
So that's basically where I am personally at. I love my N1. I will be getting it replaced due to hardware failure. I may not use the replacement, and may sell it instead to finance a Windows Phone 7, or possibly (but not likely) an iPhone over the course of the summer.
And before anyone calls me a hater on any grounds: I have used WinMo in the past, I am using Android now, I have good friends who use iPhones and I hold nothing against them for that. I develop my code on a Windows 7 machine, and I am typing this message on my Mac, which boots Win7, OSX, and Ubuntu.
Lastly, I will say this. There is a sad saying in business that "good enough beats best." This means that despite the technology or ability out there to produce unquestionably excellent goods and services, those which are "good enough" and produce a higher profit margin will win. We will likely always feel like we are being forced to accept mediocrity, but fortunately, the devices we have today will still be outshined, outclassed, and outdone by nearly everything to come in the future.
I would say the negative responses I got here are unappreciated and pointless, but then again they were expected and matter as much as my opinion does.
As for customer service... no. I didn't get anything free. My first n1's lcd broke inside my pocket in a restauraunt. The glass and case was perfect. There were tiny cracks in the lcd. I didn't drop it or anything. I really liked the phone, so I bought another. Google and HTC both gave me a runaround about covering it. Twenty minutes into a conversation, 3 steps up the corporate ladder, and and they finally said send it in, charge 500 dollars, and if your lucky we will give it back. The second time, my wife dropped it, which was her fault. As opposed to my TP2, Palm Pre, my sister's G1, which carriers were glad to replace free immediately if they even looked funny.
My point wasnt to repeat the other guys, only to explain my point about us being beta testers and ask how others felt. I expected some of you to defend it all, and some to complain. I was only explaining the things that made me think about it. And I feel that it is pointless for people to jump all over any person that posts a opinionated comment. If your not trolling or begging or complaining to devs, there's nothing wrong with having an opinion.
I didn't want to end up defending WM at all, only pointing out that their community is insanely creative. I have plenty of respect for how hard devs work. It's not the devs work I questioned, but the amount and interest of the dev community in this phone. If I wanted a WM phone I'ld have gotten the HD2. I like Android just fine, although I'ld be happy to jump on a GSM Droid with 1ghz, as I like my keyboards and hate the glare under the sun of OLED.
Also, all I meant to say about the sales numbers was that is just statistics. Chances are the phone with the most users has the most development, as theaudience is the biggest.
I see all of your points, and didnt mean to complain. The point of my post was this:
How do YOU ALL feel about your experience so far?
Thats why I explained overall how I felt with all the stuff we all have seen positive and negative.
love the phone.. but the touchscreen issues are really pissing me off. and the power button is starting to ***** out on me.
I don't regret at all the $$ I paid for Nexus One. It's an amazing phone with a great OS, it has some negatives like any other phone in the universe (battery, ringtones volume and sunlight visibility) but it has so many positives
My ex-SE phones (that I totally loved) look like an old nintendo NES compared to an XboX360
Other than the **** battery, I'm perfectly happy with my N1.
plain and simple... give me a multi-touch screen that actually works the way it should and I would be 100% satisfied with my phone...
I was hoping that the gaming experience on the phone would be much more pleasurable but with how quirky the touch screen is its nearly impossible to have a great experience...
I would say I am about 80% pleased with the experience so far and I came from a t-mobile dash so the tech on the N1 was leaps and bounds ahead of my old phone but given that I had to shell out all that money for the phone means I should have a 100% sexy piece of hardware instead of 80% of one... with a phone that has no physical keyboard, the touch screen should be much higher quality than it is....
my 2 cents...
Trevor, I agree with you.
Face it people, the phone is a disappointment.

Just wondering if there is a lot of people here that have had the iPhone prior til an android device. How do you like the transition?
I have had the O2X for a month and i can say that i really miss my iPhone So much more smooth, fast, battery life... And if anything goes wrong you have the iTunes backup so you dont need to be an expert til reflash with NVflash and you dont loose all your apps and settings...
I'm using a Motorola Milestone/Droid, and I really don't miss my iPhone 3G. The thing was horribly slow. Zero multi-tasking. Screen resolution was very low compared. Hardware wise, it was a real improvement. I'm running at 1GHz now with CM7.
In the software front, I really like, and prefer, how Android handle things. Apple is too control freak. I want emulator and ****!
But I have to say that the lack of proper backup in Android is really lame. iTunes can be really slow, but at least it does a proper sync and backup.
There is absolutely nothing like it in the Android world. Google has to improve its game!
Yes i do miss my 3gs apps on android are really ugly android has a lot of problems but, wanted a bigger screan so here i am using noveka rom 2.2 with honeycomb theme and have android only for
1 month flashed like 30 different roms but if iphone 5 or 4s what ever will change the boring home screen im going back. On android maybee on ice cream sandwitch sorry for my english but im romanian

I have never had an Iphone and will NEVER get one Android is the way forward
Used to have a 3g, and i hated it.
I love the openness of android, and on the hardware side the O2x just blows all the iphones away.
Whar ROM are you using? Since my O2x is way faster than my old iphone, and my buddy's iphone4

I just bought an iPhone again, even though this phone has great potentiel. It just lack the commitment of LG. I tired of trying out new roms every second day, to get it running as it should from the start. It's a great piece of hardware, but the hardware is only as good as the software running it.... Goodbye LG Mobile it was a laggy experience knowing ya
Thats one thing I will never buy and that is a IPhone. Don't like Apple due to there bringing old tech out and telling everyone its new. I mean come on Facetime, Video calling is years old but because Apple did it. Its AMAZING and been invented by aliens from a future race!.
The IPhone could have a 8 core CPU running at 3GHZ each, but will never give Apple my money knowing that there laughing at all the sheep jumping on the band wangon of every Apple product that ever gets released with the letter I in front.
There OS is closed and controlled. Android isn't the best OS about but it has Openness, yes that is a plus and a negative but I would rather buy a fone that is MINE rather than feeling that Apple have control over what I can and can't do.
I will give credit to Apple though because if it wasnt for them, we wouldnt be where we are now with technology. Also, Apple are good with updates but for me personally...
I would rather buy a £10 basic fone than a IPhone.
Google arent perfect as there just as bad because they want to make money.. The difference is, how they promote and allow different manufacturers to build upon there platform.
All Apple want to do is FORCE everyone Developers and Customers alike. Its a shame people don't see things like this and think everything Apple do is great. The IPhone 5 could have a 500mhz single processor and everyone will say its the best fone out there. With Apple announcing a game that looks like Nokias Snake and telling everyone its a brand new game.
Android is about CHOICE....
Apple is about CONTROL....
Just my personal opinion and understand its not what every thinks lol.

I would say, that i'm not an apple fan boy, it was just the phone i had before the O2X, and i was quite satisfied with it. The o2x was my first android phone, and i do like the google platform. For me, it was more the lg software provided with the phone, that made me go back. I know there are heaps of custom roms, and i've tried alot, but it always, seemed to cause some other problem, batterydrain/or just poor batterylife/reboots. And with cm7 which has become pretty stable, i still experienced the sound bug, and i use my phone as mp3 player aswell, so it got pretty annoying. I dunno if i'm gonna keep the o2x, I might, just to see what will be provided for it, in the next couple of months. The hardware inside the phone, is quite awesome, it's just sad that LG doesn't know how to use it, but they might end up getting back in the game.
^
its your first android phone and yet your speaking like you know how other android phones perform. you're telling us that it's Lg's fault that you are not enjoying your android phone but you haven't tried androids from Htc, samsung, motorola, and SE, im not an LG fanboy but this is my 2nd phone from them and so far im very pleased. I've been using lots of android phone and my O2x is by far the best and the smoothest. battery life is just the same as my previous galaxy S but 3x better than my desire HD.
i did have an iphone 3GS but the restrictions and the boring and inefficient UI brought me to android. and i hate i-tunes. i hat steve jobs pushing me to use -itunes like im some kind of illiterate uneducated old man. and im 22 years old.
why can't i just use my 3Gs just like any other storage device. drag and drop into a folder and then bam!
I don`t miss my iphone 3gs at all!
Love my o2x as it is. I would not trade my o2x for iphone 4 even for iphone 5 when it comes!
My wife just switched from iphone 4 to galaxy s2 and she loves it as well.
Simpler to use, drag and drop music, backups, possibilities, great apps as well, amazing support from devs, much more customisable, fun to use and great deal of learning about linux if you are into modding. You can do crazy **** with it as well: runs nmap, metasploit, backtrack 5 and so on...
I had an iphone 3g / 4 before this. I switched to this phone and i sold both the iphones.
Reasons why i like android more than ios:
- Itunes sucks! Seriously, i hate that program so much.
- widgets
- downpullable status bar ( and dont come up with sbsettings, because thats not part of ios)
- theming
- custom roms which actually add new features to your phone
- google synch, i love being able to nvflash this phone to 0 and install a custom rom afterwhich you just sign up with the google account and all the contacts and applications are back. Again, F#ck i tunes.
- iphone feels small,really small.
Things i like about iphone:
- They work 100% out of the box
- All software is/feels the same
- research has shown that people with an iphone have more sex than people without one. Works out well for me, i just say mine is better than the iphone

Well i'm a android noob then Well my experience is that the lg launcher is pretty laggy, compared to what i expected from lg 2xspeed which it's called in some countries. And yeah you can install other launchers, but for me, a android noob, I would have expected the first hand experience to be alot better. I'm not agains android, i quite like the openess and the widgets. But for me the iphone forfill my needs more at the time being. But it seems that when the word iphone is writen, ppl go "bolistic". I'm not for or against the different platforms, that's why i also said, that i might keep the lg2x to see what it brings in the future, cause i like it, but i'm just disappointed with the software lg has provided. And yes i find it poor software, since for me, out of the box experience means alot, and that feeling didn't satisfy me at all. But that is just my oppinion!!! I didn't mean to start an apple/android war, since i like both platforms.
You didn't expect a android vs iphone war when you opened this thread? you're right, go back to your simple Iphone.

I didn't start this thread
I did try iphone 4 before switching to android.
But damn it, Apple has got a really big plus on his side, i mean iOS just works. You just click and it works!
Look at the crappy thing that LG did, they almost copyed everything to apple, but they didn't learn that power is nothing without control. I personally cry when i see the shietty UI they implemented that's capable to make a Dual-Core lag lol.
I will just wait iphone 4s or 5 whatever is called to go back to Apple. I just gave back my iphone 4 cuz of the antenna-gate.
I don't get the crazy foaming at the mouth hype for the upcoming iPhone5 Unless I am missing something, it still is still very much going to be like the iPhone4, which was like the iPhone3, rinse and repeat...The iPhone1 was way cool and bad ass, but Apple seemed to stop innovation after that.
I am a very happy Nexus-S owner, but there are some really cool phones due out this Fall to be excited about. Windows Mango running on a Samsung Galaxy S II hardware device will be uber cool And the Nexus-Three with the all new next gen Android OS "Ice Cream" will also be awesome.
To me the iPhone needs major changes to get back into the game. Still just a screen full of app icons Ok they finally added a notification bar, about time. What about widgets ? Or total customization out of the box, without a jailbreak ? How about a 4.3" AMOLED screen ? I don't know, but to me the last few iPhone releases don't look radically different, just more of the same, with a few old tweaks added.

Apple is never going to take those requests and put them into a phone.
Let me explain how apple works.
1. Buy parts from other manufacturers
2. Built electronics using cheaply bought parts (not knocking build quality)
3. Sell updated electronic from first ever design at an extremely high price
4. Profit from all the fanboys raving over the same device only with minor changes
LET THE TROLLING BEGIN! ;D

I watched an Apple keynote about the iPhone 5 and showing the improvements and all. Before I saw the demonstration I thought the iPhone 5 would be like a whole new OS. After the demonstration it was the same tired old thing. I have an iPhone 4 and appreciate it for its simplicity and reliability and quality. But it is a tired system. Apple truly needs to move on to something new and fresh.
By the way, I love my Nexus S also. Just an excellent phone.
Your logic is sound more or less. But I could gurantee if apple released the iphone 5 that was exactly like the iphone 4 with only a cornea display as improvement, they would have the same if not more people buying the phone. When it comes to marketing, apple knows what they are doing.
They could sell someone a spoon for $10.
It would be nice to see something revolutionary spec wise like sgs2 from apple, it would warrent the pricing.
Of course the iPhone5 will have upgraded hardware, but based on the past four iPhone releases, the iPhone1 and iPhone4 are NOT radically different to the average joe blow, minor updates to the same tired OS. My sister-in-law, a huge tech geek, still uses her iPhone1 she bought in 2007, she sees no reason to upgrade to a new iPhone4, which doesn't look that much different to her. And she uses Mac Book Air's, and a MAC computer, etc...
I myself have owned the iPhone1 and iPhone3G, they were the greatest things ever back then, then a year after the 3G was getting stale and old to me, I saw the Nexus-One and never looked back, loving my rooted and custom ROM'd Nexus-S now, and looking forward to a Samsung WinMo 7 Mango phone on a Galaxy S II device or the Nexus-Three this Fall.
MIUI is proof positive that Android is superior
Loved the sex appeal of both phones I have owned but..... I got an ATRIX... will never return to iOS

Certainly sorry to hear android users give u such a hard time. Not that im taking up for them but over at the x10 forums I can see the same question asked on the same page 3 times with the answer in a post above, lmao. They are just frustrated that and ur chosen name prolly didnt help LOL
But by all means try an iphone and tell us about the experience or maybe even take a look at some reviews or read the forums of some android devices before going for the buy.

I understand you very well about the responses people get here in XDA. Mainly it comes from young people who don't really have much life experience. But I've learned to let it roll off my shoulder.
The iPhone does indeed just work. It's super reliable as long as you don't jailbreak it. But the Nexus S is Google's iPhone and is better, in my opinion, that than the iPhone for all-around usability. Just don't customize with different ROMs. You can root for the sole purpose of using certain apps that require root, and I did that to mine. But I didn't allow the process to retain the custom recovery image and I let it return to the OEM recovery image then relocked it. I have a Nexus S that is completely stock in every way but is rooted to let me use root apps, which is all I care about in rooting.
The iPhone has a simpler video calling interface than the Nexus S. But once you get the right app set up on the Nexus, it is pretty much super simple. Oh...and the iPhone can't be beat for battery life. It's purely amazing how long the battery lasts on my iPhone 4. That is something Android can't compete with. The BL of Android is just generally horrendous. The NS isn't too bad, though, once you run through a few charge/discharge cycles.

The iphone has their fair share of issues with firmware and updates. Once you start to mod and flash that thing, you're going to encounter the same issues you encountered with the Android.
If you want something that works out of the box, you have to just resist modding it..

I was pretty close to shipping the thing to mskip with funding to execute his protocol for nandroid...lol.
thinking over it, i despise apple, have since the eighties and with the new crowd of hipster d00ds ugh (i skipped sxsw).
no iphone for me...
just my 2 cents going out there...
I do love my android, it amazes me with what it can do and I learn to do new things all the time. it really grows on you. I love android, but iOS stole my soul haha. I think its the fact of having an iPhone, the "bandwagon" everyone is on, the "revolutionary" aspect, isn't very revolutionary. I'd say close to 50%? of us have 8 MP cameras, but if the iPhone 5 or 4G has one, everyone will think its the most amazing thing ever.
I have this discussion a lot with my friend, we both came from iOS, hundreds of jailbreaks, bricked devices, DFU mode nightmares, the whole nine yards. he went to windows, I'm on android. the latest we've done is build custom hackintoshes, so we dual boot OS X and win7, and I always find myself using apple... I supose its the simplicity of it and the fact that its so well known, the fact that there isn't 200 different devices. an iPhone is an iPhone, in a way it is revolutionary no matter what they seem to do, and I admit eventually I will go back to it for college, buy a Mac book air. they speak for themselves, and IMHO, I don't think apple will ever be less than number 1...

I use android and that is all i will use for the fact of customization and that i can do wateva the f*** i want to it. I have never been a fan of crapple products but i absolutely love the release of a new iPhone for 2 main reasons. The first is that, everytime apple releases a product, google releases their newest state-of-the-art product. Secondly, it gives me another chance to show my friends that my phone is still better than theirs.

I was a happy iPhone owner of the first two generations, I have just moved on, found it getting stale with hardly any changes, besides the obvious hardware upgrades yearly, it is the app drawer always open look I can't stand, plus the "toy" Fischer Price look and feel of the settings and icons, feels more like a chick phone or non techie phone, more for the average Joe blow.
I think both platforms are great.
I had an iPhone all the way up to 3g. It was an awesome device for it's time. It worked right out of the box with little to no setup. iTunes had a ton of apps to choose from and once jailbroken you could change the theme and do a few other nifty things.
BUT... it was god awful slow - I never had 3g speeds in my area, and even back to stock was a pain to have to wait... and wait... and wait for it to do ANYTHING.
My buddy got an iPhone 4 and although it is sleek and it runs great - I wasn't super impressed - it was the same ol phone but now had a front facing camera.
You were still stuck with the limitations of what Apple allowed you to have - no expansion, no switching out the battery, and no control over on how your phone looks/feels/tweaks etc...
I received a Samsung Captivate for my birthday. The screen is gorgeous, I had access to the battery and could even add memory! I didn't miss the front facing camera.. and the back camera is decent.
But right out of the box I had to come here and flash a custom ROM. This is a blessing and a curse. I had to spend a lot of time (ok hours) to ensure I didn't brick my brand new device.
Skip to today and I still have the same phone for over a year. Still snappy, the screen is still gorgeous. And now I have my choice of ROMs that I can easily and quickly flash to my device. Currently I run MIUI - which to me is a blend of awesomeness... of both IOS and Android
Either way... Apple designs a great device which is designed to be "thrown away" for the next model (which has been their business model for years now.) Its a great business plan.
That and since they (Apple) spend so much time with marketing and design of a "great" smartphone - the sheeple eat it up. I'm not knocking folks who get the device. It will work out of the box and you don't have to **** around with it for hours.
I personally prefer Android devices - I get to do what I want with them and I live with the bugs. As long as it's stable enough to make phone calls, send/rcv txts, and I can check my email - I'm good.
Samsung will likely release a next gen tab in Barcelona. Will this mean minimal support for our tab?
I was a big defender of android for 2 years. But i have had it. Will switch over to iphone 5 and ipad 3. Our tab rom from Samsung is suboptimal to say the least. Still no ICS. App quality still sucks for business, science, musicians etc. Improvement too slow. I thought differently 6 months ago but now it seems we can not catch up to Apple ecosystem.
I am just trying to make a rational decision, no ideological arguments.
I know I know...go ahead, hit me...

There's a couple of nice ICS roms over in the development forum, I'm using the latest Galaxian Soup alpha and it's awesome.
I agree.. I'm feeling frustrated from lag and the low support from my device. Yes Apple taking the full control for IOS.. But I realise that its for good.....

here at the WEF
I also need to admit that I am in a bad mood right now...which prompted me to start this thread.
I am here in Davos at the wef. looking around I see only ipads. the special wef app on my tab 8.9 fcs all the time, looks terribly designed and can not be used in landscape on the tablet!
on the ipad the same app looks great andworks in landscape. that just fuelled my anger....

None of the roms for the 8.9 seem to display hdmi out correctly or have other significant issues.

well but that ain't really androids or samsungs fault. if someone designs a crappy app for android and a well working app for ios then of course it will look better on ios....
as for support. the older iphones aren't getting any updates and ipad1 is missing out on a lot of features that the ipad2 got via software. so it aint like android is all bad and ios is all good.
that being said, yeah samsung is being slow releasing stuff and touchwizz is bloated crap. they should try and please people releasing updates as fast as possible instead of bloating them and making them slower.
I've only owned my sgt 8.9 for a month and I think th nhardware is fantastic and going from iphone 3-4s and my wifes ipad 2 to this android and samsung show they can pull it off better than apple in most ways.... But.....
Time between releases isn't practical, the features of true clean android os (no samsung excess besides ebook) are fantastic but samsung kill it with touchwiz and excess compulsary samsung apps, and the market is great but also it's own worst enemy. (but we cant do anything about that because its un-regulated so to speak). Been muking around with custom roms and my hats off to the develooers as they're are really trying to polish up and bring us the best experience possible but they're relying on samsung to continue support but sadly they just are developing enough for our developers to improve on.
It's sad when a combination of 2 great products with both ability, style and funding can't bring it together and focus on fewer models or realeases to perfect something thats already almost there and really flex there muscles in the face of the competition.

agree, but that is why we need to consider the whole ecosystem that generates design standards, a sense of esthetics and professionalism and coolness...
samsung seems to push new bricks with better technology at a frantic speed but this does not improve usability. they are bad at engaging users and are terrible on the softwareside. It also seems that the ios ecosystem has the more demanding users that care less about tech and custom roms but overall usability.
I have my tab now for 5 months, there has not been a release of any appropriate rom by samsung for a 600$ Tablet! not acceptable...and my sgs i9000 is also not supported anymore by samsung...
I have an 8.9 and I feel your pain as well. I want Android to work out but it seems the manufacturers are only interested in the initial sale of the item, after that support dwindles quickly. Compare this to Apple who understands that your building a relationship with your customer. I think it sucks that the Kindle Fire has better support then the Galaxy Tab and most honeycomb devices.
App support with Android is poor at best. When compatibility has to be reviewed for each device by the developer (Hello hulu, netflix, & Gameloft!), you have a poor ecosystem. A number of really good games avail on the iPad do not even have Android the radar.
Still, I hang in there, because I don't like Apples restrictive system. Hoping manufacturers & developers will get on board and fix things. If it doesn't change in the next year though, I'm out and going back to iPad, because at the end of the day I want to use my device not hack it.
I can understand the frustration fully. I have an LG Optimus S, and my wife just upgraded off her Samsung Moment. Sometimes, vendor support for the latest version of android is minimal at best. In contrast, Apple EOLs their hardware, and there is no coming back from that. Every hardware update/major version release sees the previous oldest supported platform unsupported. Additionally, even the previous version sees missing features on the software side (ref iphone 4 + siri) that hafe been proven to run on the older platform.
Atleast with android, you can rely on strong dev communities to build new versions of the software in a timely manner. All weekend I ran the ICS alpha/beta and it is very nice!
I like my tab mainly for the size and form, and for 360 dollars it was a deal. It doesn't work any better them my Acer A500, which is more use full in the long run. Anyways my first android was the Samsung Moment which was terrible, htc hero, evo, nexus s, Acer A100, Acer A500, nook color, I pad 2, and now this 8.9. So I have had a lot of experience and I can surely say this is my last android mobile device. I'm tired of being a lab rat for these half baked devices all has had major problems. I don't want to have to rely on developers to fix things. I have only kept the I pad for a month and couldn't live without Google's services, but now I'm over it. Until they get more control over these manufactures to provide updates in a timely manor and manufactures fix their hardware I don't see a reason to stay. I guess the flexibility of android comes at a price and we all get burned.

This is a really interesting thread, because it portrays what I think would be a very different opinion versus if you asked the same question other in the dev board. And the different demographics involves paralleled a conversation I had the other day at work.
I am a complete Android head - half the appeal for me is tinkering with the thing. I see that as normal - no, actually I see that as a big part of the experience. I hate the iPad because it is so rigidly locked down in every respect. I had an iPad, but found it stifling and could get on with it even jailbroken.
I was shocked, however, when a girl at work gave a ten minute scathing diatribe on Android based on her experience with a low end Samsung phone. "But that was a low end Android phone!" I said. "It was bound to be slow and clunky. That's not a fair assessment of Android to base it on that experience. Plus, even if it was underpowered hardware, you probably could still have found a ROM for it out there that'd solve most of the problems you were having".
She didn't care. She just wanted the thing to work out of the box and her eyes glazed over when I started talking about ROMs.
It was a new perspective for me and I find myself recommending devices differently now. Time was I would have recommended the GT 8.9 unequivocally. The form factor plus hardware (in my opinion) beats anything else currently on the market. And I'd put my ICS equipped 8.9 up against any iPad in terms of user experience and I'd say it comes out on top. However, if you want a tablet that you get out of the box and use, it's not this one. The stock Samsung Android install is an abortion and unless you are happy to tweak (or have a family member who'll do it for you) it's not the device for you.
And therein lies the problem with 99% of Android devices on the market. Until vendors get over this need to differentiate their devices by adding layer after layer of bloat on top of Android, Android will continue to play second fiddle to iOS in terms of the user experience - even if that iOS user experience is rigidly controlled and prevents you from doing basic things like moving an icon a couple of spaces away from another.
I never had a problem with android until I lost my nexus one. Then I entered the world of other manufacturers devices. So far they all suck. HTC has the ****ty looking sense the I dare to define a great punch in the face to good design, Samsung is notoriously known for making good hardware but not giving a crap about the software, I'm not sure why this is, why they think that the software is not as important to the device. My next try will be with Asus, they seem to update their software on top of having decent hardware. This in regard of tablets for phones, i'll switch to a nexus device as soon as my HTC dies or the galaxy nexus comes to t-mobile.
I went through apple and i dont like the company. First of all i'm forced most of the time at work to use imacs to work on visual effects, i dont know where studio owners get their facts, but those machine sucks for production! They are designed for customers not professionals, they have the guts of a laptop and none of the benefits. Then i have a macbook that gave me nothing but hardware problems for 3 years, an iphone 4 that i can't use because its super locked to at&t and i used to have an ipod touch which died unexpectedly during a vacation. The only apple stuff i'm kinda happy about are my two ipods that still survive (and yet do not allow, me to officially get my music out of them).
So as you can see I'm fed up with apple and their shady hardware, they killed all the great professional stuff they had (shake, final cut pro, quicktime pro, apple servers and raids) and i don't think osx has any advantage over windows anymore either.
There are two faces to every coin, but I'm sure one day I will find a good tablet/phone/computer maker for my needs, it's just a trial and error job.
Good luck with Apple I hope you'll be more lucky than me!

nice post mate. i totally agree with you and half the fun for me with android is the messing about and tweaking stuff. the only android phones i would recomend without thinking twice are the nexus series (because they are bloat free) and the s2 because its just and awesome device. but yeah if you have something more "consumerish" and don't feel like messing around with it you aren't gonna have the nices experience.
for the technologically unprepaired person an iProduct is probably better because it just works as they think it should (even though its awefully restrained and restricted)

i'm still running my n1 and loving it
as for apple machines for production...i have a lot to do in the video sector and we use macpros with final cut (7 not x )
i must say they are awesome machines but also have a few downsides.
they are friggin expensive (as everything apple)
they are not the error free devices everyone thinks they are. only last month we had 2 graphics cards dying 1 hdd giving up and 2 OS corruptions. so the myth about apple products not breaking down is...a myth!
so yeah if you are prepared to tinker i would go with android all the way. if you are my mum or someone else that just wants to USE something and not get involved with it...then i guess the i is the way to go.
I showed my stock skyrocket when I first bought it, she didn't even wanted to look.
Then I installed my preferred launcher (Launcher 7) and custom roms, lots of small tricks and clean ups (hid all the extra apps like Ti Backup, Root Explorer, etc.) and let the Windows Phone 7 interface dominate with big Twitter and Facebook buttons, Big camera and email button, weather. She was sold. She played with it while I was watching tv for a good while.
If the iPhone 5 will feature yet another 3.5" display, I'll take your phone no problem, she said.
I think the Android Interface, esp. the launcher, the widget handling, etc. leaves a lot to be desired. WP7 less is more approach works for some.

I was with Apple before Android. Now I am proud not following the iCrowd.
After stripping all bloatware and services my Sammy serves me well.
In regards to ICS I tried it on Xoom and didn't see anything vitally important.
It seems that in one year every piece of hardware becomes largely irrelevant and in two obsolete.
its still fck alpha so whats the point here??

This post is not demand a build for our phone, this post is not to get anybody upset it is just a question that I've had for many years.
I've owned every single Nexus device up until the Nexus 6P, and have owned every single pixel device... I remember that with each Nexus phone the support scene was so robust that you look forward to a new phone to come out and see development on it...
For some reason pixel phones are one of the only phones that don't get love from any custom ROM development out there.. you see that lineage OS does not support our phone and has not supported our phone since the Pixel 1 officially. Paranoid Android has not supported our phone at all since the Pixel 1 , And the last official update from them was in 2017.. why is it that our phone being one of the latest phones does not get love?
The main thing that I've heard is that our phone is too expensive to build for, but I have seen the OnePlus 7 pro have vast support in the community and it is almost up there as far as pricing goes as the pixel.
I have always been one to contribute to donations or to work that's worth donating to, dirty unicorns has been a great ROM, but if you think about it our selection of ROMs can be counted with one hand .
Make Google phones great again!
I also believe the pixels don't attract the custom rom enthusiasts like us they are made & sold & marketed to people to be a iPhone competitor also I feel a lot of developers are getting older & many devs just support a few phones that's it & there are not as many devs on the scene like there were years ago unfortunately I remember have my OG Droid from Verizon the support was crazy unfortunately I feel we have to look at it this way its a end of a era for google phones sad to say
Those custom roms are made to make our experience feel like Pixel. They take here and there from pixel feature. Since we are using pixel software, so what the point of having the custom rom? Kernel is more important. Thanks god we have artemis and kiri. Soon we will have Proton or maybe Sultan.
Btw we dont have TWRP support while there is for OP7Pro. Install a custom rom or make one is pain in the ass.
Because they consistently don't live up to expectations. Everybody keeps waiting for them to live up to hype and at least attempt to challenge others with hardware or respond to feedback and they continue to ignore that feedback. it's still in all right device, I like it it's overpriced as hell and I'm glad I waited a few months to get it, still tempted by the OnePlus 8 pro after leaving my 7 pro for this.

Better off going back to the 7 pro.It jus got Dual boot twrp. I'm running Oos and lineage as of this writing tomorrow might be different  . I got a 3xl and it lost twrp after Android 9 you can fastboot boot it with half the functions not working the 7t the same way an id imagine 8 pro be the same. Only way to have fun with Magisk on the 3xl Android 10 is to be running a user-debug build. Without the debug build magisk will let you overlay the system an look at your data but that's bout it. The way things look nowadays looking alot more locked down then they used to wait til Android 11 hits even more so is the case. Now Google going to build their own chipset like Samsung with help from Samsung Which will bring us one more step closer to Google Fuschia instead of Android
ROMs in general have gone down hill.
The need for them isn't really there. Early on, Android phones had tons of issues, shortcoming and limitations... ROMs were a way around that, to get the phones to work the way we wanted and the way they should have come out of the box.
Now? Most phones are really good, and there's not much to improve. ROM's don't really have much to offer any more, other than to a shrinking pool of users who want to tweak their phones more than they actually USE their phones...
Adding upon all comments above one of the reason is people are stuck with IOS. They don't know the actual power of Android. Who ever tries the Android are forced to go back to ios again because lack of facetime and other apps that are only available only ios

Realistically, what's the power of android these days? Yes, you can tweak icons and the status bar and stuff, which 99.99% of phone owners don't care about...
The differences between the platforms isn't as great as it once was... I am on an iPhone 11 Pro at the moment and its a great phone... I want to come back to Android at some point but the watch situation on Android is a joke. And for the Pixels... they just never live up to the hype. I love Samsung, but updates still suck. There is OnePlus but some of the features like Wifi calling don't work on ATT half the time...
I prefer Android overall, but if you want the complete package with a good watch, Apple has the better package.
I had high hopes for Essential but we saw where that went...
I wish that Google would put out a pixel without giant bezels, that didn't have a last generation processor, etc... They will put out a phone in November that's using the same specs as phones that came out last month...

It's kinda sad because I remember my Note 4 having a ****load of AOSP ROM options and this phone has 1 that hasn't been updated in months. I would love to root/flash a ROM on my phone but I think the main thing is a lack of developers. Most have probably moved on and don't see a point in developing custom ROMs when most phones nowadays are capable of doing almost anything. The main reason I rooted/flashed ROMs was for the ability to customize my phone to my liking.

IMO Pixels don’t have the fan base of the type of enthusiast that install custom ROMs and such. Higher spec phones like OnePlus and stuff like they are more heavily modded i feel like because those types of people are attracted to the specs. Pixels don’t have specs that are anything to write home about. Where as a OnePlus with 12GB of RAM is pretty impressive.

That's probably it right there. The latest and greatest Pixel, uses specs that are already obsolete... Every year, they bring half year old specs and release their new phones with comparable specs to everyone else's specs that are already on the way out.
My thoughts below are mine, and mine only..
The reason you don't see as many custom roms here on xda imho is because it's no longer a hub that's a viable place for most roms to gain any value. the passion for development hasn't died. There are many great new features, and things users would love. Sure, the pixels are great out of the box, but you can say that for any flagship that has come out recently.
Don't get me wrong, xda is great, I'm just saying you shouldn't think devs and users have lost interest because their content isn't on xda.
I mean you're right,. It's different than the days of installing a ROM on a Droid x or something and actually seeing a notable difference between Moto blur and not. Or my note two with some of the different runs I could get on it. I don't know, I think I would like the freedom to make different apps different notifications so that I could customize notifications by app or by person a little easier for text messages. Little things like that that I feel like I used to get in some of those older arms but maybe not maybe I'm just misremembering or something.
