Would an i9000 rom work on a captivate without any modifications?
I found a rom with right to left language support, but it is made for the i9000. Could I just flash it?

Here is a i9000 Rom for Captivate. I use it and Love it,not 100% sure about the Right to left Language though.

yes you can just flash the i9000 rom you want, but after it boots up at least once, you'll have to flash a reoriented kernel to fix certain problems, including the incorrect screen orientation. there are a few of such clearly labeled kernels in the development forum, so take your pick. simple instructions: one-click flash the stock rom, boot normally, flash clockwordmod recovery, factory reset within clockwordmod recovery, flash your i9000 rom of choice, allow the phone to boot completely and establish a data connection, boot to recovery, flash a reoriented kernel of your choosing, boot normally and enjoy. hope this helps!

There are several kernels in the dev section, I would suggest either xcal , hardcore, or glitterball. Which is best is a matter of preference. How to install, there are several ways, replace zimage in rom package, odin, clockwork flash. What rom do you want to flash

Download the kernel you want. For example xcal's. Open zip and find the zimage. Copy it. Download rom you want. Find the zimage and replace it with the copy you made. Rezip rom package. You should be good to go

Or there is an app on the market that may make it easier
Sgs kernel flasher
Download rom
Download kernel
Flash rom
Let boot download app
Open app, close it
Move kernel to folder on sd create by app
Open app, select change kernel, select the kernel you doenloaded
You will have to be rooted to use this app

I'm all set. Thanks!. Worked flawlessly with the Zimage file swap.
OK... Step 2... I customized the ROM now how can I repackage it to a .zip CW installation file?

I have winRAR. But when I say to make it flashable I am talking about the files of the ROM currently on my phone...
You have me a bit confused. You changed the zimage in the rom to a captivate kernel. Where did you do this, on phone or on pc

Hi,
this might be a stupid question but i want to sell my galaxy s and i need to flash a stock rom. Clockwork recovery is installed (and should stay installed) - so how do I "re-stock" my galaxy?
Its a JPY-Version.
Thanks!
download JPY from www.samfirmware.com
boot into download mode
load JPY into ODIN (usually pda)
Hit start.
Do factory reset
JOB DONE !
Thanks. Is there a way without using ODIN? Maybe download an update.zip somewhere and flash it with clockwork?

But why You dont want to use Odin? It's Samsung's softeare so it is safe and when your phone will be bricked by offivial software you still have your guarantee.

Far as I know, no one has every made a update.zip file that contains only stock firmware files. They ones available always contain CF root or some other custom rooting kernel.
Also, why do you wish to keep CWM recovery? It's hardly stock in that case.
alright for some reason i can boot into the 2.5 which i did at one time, it only boots me into 3.0 when i do vol up and power button ive downloaded bootstrap from the market but when it tells me to boot into recovery it takes me to 3.0
any help?
when i try to flash roms it only lets me flash honeycomb alpha 2.5 and thats about it anything else it aborts
You have to flash a custom kernel with clockwork 2.5. The bootstrap app doesn't install the proper version. Khas has one, in the Voodoo thread.
Swyped from my better than life galaxy tab
ive looked up his kernal but when i try to download it the server is not working ive looked around but nothing
can you give me a link to that thread plz
http://www.blackmugmedia.com/Android/GT/Mirror/Roms/CDMA/Better_Than_Life/Psirens/
that's the rom,
http://www.blackmugmedia.com/Androi...DMA/KhasMek.Voodoo.plus.CDMA.Tab.v4.OC.zImage
that's the zimage of kernel version 4
http://www.blackmugmedia.com/Android/GT/Mirror/Kernals/CDMA/KhasMek.Voodoo.Plus.CDMA.Tab.v5.OC.zip
that's the zip of the kernel v 5. if you can boot up and get to the market, you can download a thing called SGS kernel flasher. that lets you flash kernels while the phone is on. (i know, right? blew my mind too.) anyway, if you put the v5 kernel on your sd card, and run sgs kernel flasher, that works a charm.
otherwise, zimage version 4, and go from there. once you have market, you can get SGS and flash version 5.
Thanks for the links but now i got a bigger problem lol i can flash these in odin right? Its not booting past the samsung logo and i cant even boot into recovery only download mode

i use heimdall, because odin seemed really buggy to me. but a zimage is a zimage. try flashing back to stock, and then use heimdall to put the zimage in both the kernel and the recovery slot.

You can flash the kernal from Clockwork 3.0. After that then you will access to clockwork 2.5 which will allow you to flash the other roms.
If I upload custom kernel on my Galaxy S with 2.3.4 JVQ, is it possible to revert to original JVQ kernel in order to check if same issue will appear on original kernel to detect if custom kernel has bug?
Thanks.
Flash as pda with odin.

To get just the stock kernel in a flashable state you need to extract the zImage file from stock ROM (either one file or PDA of 3-file), then put it in a tar file by itself. Then you flash that as PDA with Odin.
I'm just going to expand a bit.
Find a single file tar of the stock firmware that is meant to be flashed as a PDA. Use winrar to look inside the .tar file to get the zImage and put it in a tar by itself. You can then flash it as PDA in Odin.

I thought that it is proper way to extract zImage from original ROM but I wasn't sure that it is good way. Thanks, I will try in this way.
I created zImage.TAR with 7-zip but Odin cannot load it. It comes to step when zImage should be loaded but upload is not happening. Do I have to exec some certain parameters when zipping it in TAR with 7-zip or how can I do it?
EDIT: I managed to make proper (flashable) TAR with IZarc application. Nevertheless, I uploaded stock zImage but I still have root access although other mooded kernel specific applications are gone. So, basically, I didn't revert it to original state. Or I am wrong? Please, advise.
Thanks.
Rooting doesn't necessarily mean changing kernel. You can root a completely stock phone and still use stock kernel. You can also unroot the phone.
You can use the SGS kernel flasher free app to flash a zImage directly from the phone.

He's right, root often stays behind. To get back to stock just do a factory reset.
Make sure you can get into download mode before flashing just in case.

I've read through many threads, but in most they discribe to root a phone via flashing the kernel
like here.
and i also would like to have a backup of my stock kernel, if i would flash it, but i'm not sure from which version i should take it. i do have JVH, but i can't find a fitting csc (it's MOBJV2) on samfirmware or google.
my friend wants to change the rom on his stock i9000
is there a tutorial or app that can root, install CWM, etc so that i can just boot into CWM and flash a new rom?
thanks
EDIT:
from a quick read, do i do this?:
. Rooting your phone and flashing a custom Kernel.
3.1. Download your preferred kernel (the version for Odin, not the one for CWM).
3.2. Open up Odin or Heimdall.
3.3. Put you phone into "Download mode" and connect it to your computer (DO NOT CONNECT THE PHONE BEFORE OPENING ODIN OR THIS WILL NOT WORK).
3.4.1. If you are using Heimdall, unpack your kernel until you end up with a file called zImage. Select that in Heimdall in the box for "Kernel (zImage)" and click Start.
3.4.2. If you are using Odin, select the file you downloaded in the PDA box and click Start.
3.5. After your Phone reboots, go into "Recovery mode" and go to "Advanced Speedmod ULK features" -> "ROOT / Install Superuser".
3.6. After rebooting the phone again, you should have root permissions.

If it's stock, flash ramads jvt with odin. You'll then have a rooted rom with cwm recovery.

3) boot into CWM
4) flash the rom my friend wants
correct?

Yep. That's correct.
Is he on gingerbread, if so follow the above process - you may need to flash a rooted kernel (chainfires would probably be best) afterwards as pda in odin.
If not on gingerbread, it may be quicker to flash milky's rom, it's got odin and full instructions in the download, and gb bootloaders.

your going to have to explain this to me, im really confused now
It's best to flash to the latest stock rom before installing a custom rom. Ramads jvt is deodexed but does not have root - so if you flash jvt, you will need to flash CFroot kernel after for root and cwm.
Ramads jvt does not have gingerbread bootloaders, so if it is on froyo or eclair, gb bootloaders will be needed.
If all this seems a pain, milky's rom is odin flashable, has bootloaders, root, cwm and also has odin and full instructions in the download.
Hope this is more clear.

For flashing video guide you can visit

I can't install root from zip file from sd card , bacause is displayed 'e:signature vefification failed' . Next time I flash by ODIN file CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS, but after flash phone stops on boot animation. Any ideas how to root phone?
I have tried to flash speedmod kernel and use CWM from there but when i try to flash a rom it doesnt work and when i try to reboot it gets stuck at the boot animation. is there a way you can install CWM recovery that actually works? also if you can find an app like SGS kernel flasher except that flashes roms instead? i have tried using ROM Manager to flash CWM but all that happens is it says successfully flashed CWM recovery then when i boot into recovery it goes into android recovery 3e.

use one click back to stock
Hello, what I do every time im stuck is go back to stock KK4 using one click odin.
from there then I use Odin 1.85 to flash Korn kernel.
Korn kernel include cwm, from there you can install other Roms or kernels, or just root.

Would help to know what is your goal (flash rom, kernel, modem or simply having cwm recovery). There is a well written guide in the Q&A: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
But Zestar pretty much explained it. You'll need Odin 1.85 (which you will find in the guide) and a custom kernel (doesn't matter much which one as long as it supports cwm recovery). You have a lot of reading to do before jumping into this and I highly suggest it! I also bricked once outta being hasty, won't happen again
