[Q] tutorial i9000 stock -> custom rom - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my friend wants to change the rom on his stock i9000
is there a tutorial or app that can root, install CWM, etc so that i can just boot into CWM and flash a new rom?
thanks
EDIT:
from a quick read, do i do this?:
. Rooting your phone and flashing a custom Kernel.
3.1. Download your preferred kernel (the version for Odin, not the one for CWM).
3.2. Open up Odin or Heimdall.
3.3. Put you phone into "Download mode" and connect it to your computer (DO NOT CONNECT THE PHONE BEFORE OPENING ODIN OR THIS WILL NOT WORK).
3.4.1. If you are using Heimdall, unpack your kernel until you end up with a file called zImage. Select that in Heimdall in the box for "Kernel (zImage)" and click Start.
3.4.2. If you are using Odin, select the file you downloaded in the PDA box and click Start.
3.5. After your Phone reboots, go into "Recovery mode" and go to "Advanced Speedmod ULK features" -> "ROOT / Install Superuser".
3.6. After rebooting the phone again, you should have root permissions.

There's a wealth of information hidden in the stickies which you scrolled past to post your thread.

dont worry, i am well learned from stickies, but this is urgent and considering this isnt even my phone, i dont want to have to study for 500 hours before flashing like i did with my own one
can you just suggest one please?

If it's stock, flash ramads jvt with odin. You'll then have a rooted rom with cwm recovery.

Yep.
Or you could flash milky's rom, he's posted an odin flashable version. It's odexed jvr.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium

so let me get the process right:
1) download ramads jvt and odin
2) use odin to flash the new kernel which will give superuser and CWM
3) boot into CWM
4) flash the rom my friend wants
correct?

Yep. That's correct.

Is he on gingerbread, if so follow the above process - you may need to flash a rooted kernel (chainfires would probably be best) afterwards as pda in odin.
If not on gingerbread, it may be quicker to flash milky's rom, it's got odin and full instructions in the download, and gb bootloaders.

your going to have to explain this to me, im really confused now

It's best to flash to the latest stock rom before installing a custom rom. Ramads jvt is deodexed but does not have root - so if you flash jvt, you will need to flash CFroot kernel after for root and cwm.
Ramads jvt does not have gingerbread bootloaders, so if it is on froyo or eclair, gb bootloaders will be needed.
If all this seems a pain, milky's rom is odin flashable, has bootloaders, root, cwm and also has odin and full instructions in the download.
Hope this is more clear.

yes you can just flash the i9000 rom you want, but after it boots up at least once, you'll have to flash a reoriented kernel to fix certain problems, including the incorrect screen orientation. there are a few of such clearly labeled kernels in the development forum, so take your pick. simple instructions: one-click flash the stock rom, boot normally, flash clockwordmod recovery, factory reset within clockwordmod recovery, flash your i9000 rom of choice, allow the phone to boot completely and establish a data connection, boot to recovery, flash a reoriented kernel of your choosing, boot normally and enjoy. hope this helps!

There are several kernels in the dev section, I would suggest either xcal , hardcore, or glitterball. Which is best is a matter of preference. How to install, there are several ways, replace zimage in rom package, odin, clockwork flash. What rom do you want to flash

how i install the LP1 ICS Repack?

hi ...
how i install the LP1 ICS Repack with mobile odin?
Install Mobile Odin and Mobile Odin's Flash Kernel - if you can't find proper kernel file for your device, buy Mobile Odin Pro and it'll do it for you.
In mobile Odin, select "select file" and browse to all 5 files included in ICS repack. After that, hit "flash". Wait untill it reboots in the recovery, after it's done - do a data wipe.
You're done.

I downloaded the ICS LP1 Repack, i got Mobile Odin too. We're supposed to install AbyssNote Kernel also, right? But when is that?
1/ Launch Mobile Odin and select ICS Repack (directly the TAR archive, it works)
2/ Flash WITH wipe, then install AbyssKernel?
3/ Install the ICS ROM we want.
I downloaded iMilka CM9 & ICS Stunner (will try that first). Please anyone confirm this is the right thing to do in the right order.

No. Modify your steps like this here-
1/ Launch Mobile Odin and select ICS Repack (directly the TAR archive, it works)
2/ Flash WITH wipe. Reboot and let rom settle. Then go to recovery. Wipe the cache/dalvik and data
3/ Install the ICS ROM we want. Wipe the cache/dalvik and data and reboot.

Why would anybody need ICS repak if you are on GB? If you are on GB rom, root it(either directly or downgrading and rooting with relevant CFRoot files - PC Odin). directly install ICS ROM of your choice via CWM(as rooting GB rom will install CWM auto matically if you have chosen right CFRoot files)

how to go back to Stock GB from CM9?

I want to revert back to Stock GB from CM9. .Can i flash with mobile Odin??
flashing with Pc odin gives yellow triangle. .I dont want to that
It is not flashing with Odin that gives the red triangle. It is rooting your phone that does it. I used Odin to get rid of the red triangle (though the phone obviously still retains it's custom binary count)
I just downloaded the following ROM and flashed it with ODIN -
N7000XXLC1---------2.3.6-------2012 March----------N7000OXALC1-----------Open Europe----------------------------- Download (wipe)
I lost the triangle, lost root and gained a stock Galaxy Note.
Flashing stock Roms using PC Odin never gives you the triangle. Flashing custom kernels, Roms does.

Just as he said.. but if don't wana use Odin at all..then download the custom gb rom you want and download abyss3.9 kernel in your SD card..den do the following steps..
1.. go to recovery
2.. flash abyss kernel 3,9..
3.. don't reboot system...DONT...!!..
4.. go to advanced and select reboot recovery.. you will then reboot to abyss cwm recovery
5.. flash the gb rom you just downloaded..and reboot..
Okay first of all, flashing ANY STOCK ROM with PC Odin won't increase your binary counter, i.e. no yellow triangles.
Flashing ANYTHING (ROM obviously) with Mobile Odin won't give you the yellow triangle. Flashing non-stock or custom ROM with PC Odin will increase your binary counter.
So, just download any stock GB ROM from the development section and flash it with PC Odin. Simple!

[Q] How to install CWM recovery of Captivate?

I have tried to flash speedmod kernel and use CWM from there but when i try to flash a rom it doesnt work and when i try to reboot it gets stuck at the boot animation. is there a way you can install CWM recovery that actually works? also if you can find an app like SGS kernel flasher except that flashes roms instead? i have tried using ROM Manager to flash CWM but all that happens is it says successfully flashed CWM recovery then when i boot into recovery it goes into android recovery 3e.

Would help to know what is your goal (flash rom, kernel, modem or simply having cwm recovery). There is a well written guide in the Q&A: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
But Zestar pretty much explained it. You'll need Odin 1.85 (which you will find in the guide) and a custom kernel (doesn't matter much which one as long as it supports cwm recovery). You have a lot of reading to do before jumping into this and I highly suggest it! I also bricked once outta being hasty, won't happen again

Do you guys have any tips or some guides made for the noobs among us?
that 1st link is the safest and best.
download the rom of. your choice. It. doesn't need to be of. your region. although you can check the latest firmware on www.samfirmware.com....
Once downloaded, use pc odin with the downloaded rom tar.md5 file selected in the pda tab. The connect the phone to pc in download mode and press start.
If you are upgrading to ics, then do not do any wipes, first flash a safe kernel...

Thanks for replying. Good to know that that thread is safe, but what do you mean by flashing a safe kernel? Those terms mean nothing to me.
theres two way to flash ROM. 1 is using PC ODIN and the other one is CWM
Flashing Via PC ODIN .. you need to have two thing.. The Rom You Want to flash and the PC-ODIN software
Flashing Via CWM.. you need two things. You need to root your phone and you need to install CWM.
every rom comes with modem, kernel (the file that govern how to handle your phone cpu), csc... the kernel inside ics is known to have brickbug
theres no need to flash kernel if you are flashing Rom via PC ODIN... Flashing kernel is when you are using CWM....

So, I can just flash any ROM using ODIN, and there will be no risk bricking my device?
If I flash a ROM, will I have a fresh install, and will my kernel also change so that I don't have the brickbug anymore?

yes you can flash any ROM using ODIN safely without bricking your device.
yes you will have a fresh install. your kernel will change too. as for the brickbug....
If you flash via PC ODIN then everything is stock to what you flashed.the kernel the firmware the csc the modem..all as stock provided....
1.If you flash ICS via PC-ODIN then your kernel also would be stock ics kernel that has brickbug..
Warning :
Don't wipe anything from stock ICS recovery
Don't factory reset/Hard reset on stock ICS.
Don't flash any Wipe version of ICS ROM
let say you want to flash Latest JB Rom but you are on ICS stock.
first thing you need to do is root your device ...install CWM.. Flash safe kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
let say ive rooted... installed CWM with safe kernel...
what i always do is everytime i want to flash new rom whatever rom it is...i flash Speedmod 3-15 (safe kernel) and go to Advance>reboot recovery and flash any rom i want so that im on the safe side without worrying what kernel im on.
2.If you flash GB than your kernel will be GB kernel which is safe to wipe..
if you want to flash custom rom from gb then you root your device and installed CWM and Flash since GB kernel is safe.
but.. let say u flashed ICS and wanted to go back to GB. then you are not safe anymore,,, that is why i always flashed Speedmod kernel 3-15 (safe kernel) and reboot recovery (by going to advance>rebootrecovery) and flashed any rom... that way im always sure that im in safe kernel when flashing Rom

My question: I have a SGN infected with the eMMC bug, and I want to upgrade it to the latest stock ROM. I know very little about flashing, and I know there are some risks when doing some things. I would like to know if the first link is safe for me, and which ROM I should use of the ones listed there (I live in The Netherlands). Do you guys have any tips or some guides made for the noobs among us?

You can download any stock rom you want from searching it on the forum then you can flash it through ODIN using your computer
