Custom pic at "me" in messages - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Picture of " me" at messages etc
Does anyone know how to get rid of that grey square? why can I not customise myself?
a google search gave me a strange solution but it should be easier
Thx

It's taking the picture from your Google account. So you can either change it there or create a new contact with your info (phone, email, etc) and assign whatever photo you want to it.

I have a google picture but that doesn't show. I also tried creating a me contact but that does not work

The answer was already posted.
Create a new contact for your self with your phone number in it. Set your picture.

Once youve made a contact with your number and picture, it doesnt automatically create a picture for you in 'me'.
What I had to do was press on the grey 'me' icon in messaging, and then press on the contact info. Then press menu and edit contact, then press menu again and 'join' with the contact with your name and photo.

If the phone number reported by your SIM matches a contact for yourself with a picture, that should mean your picture ends up in the grey square.
Only problem is, if you have an oddball provider like Mobilicity Canada who doesn't program their SIM cards properly, you may have "unknown" as the phone number reported by your SIM, and any attempt to change that number on the SIM will fail.

Well I don't know what you guys are doing but I can't create a picture. I tried making a contact with my name and with the name me it all doesn't work foot me.
Oh well happy new year

All i had to do was add a contact as myself and name it "me" and put my number there and picture of course

You need to put your sim card in an "old" phone and save your number manually in the simcard, then put it back in nexus, and make a contact.

The OP should specify which provider they are using. Some providers write-protect their SIM cards so that you can't save your number on it.

The old phone method is what I found on google. It sound retarded and I don't have an old phone
But what's funny is that one says old phone and the other says I can just add a contact.
The latter doesn't work for me. I wonder how it does for them.

Just check-out the phone number in settings/status and create contact with that number. Android will recognize it.
For example: In settings i have "My phone number"
+82-109-xxx-xxxx
So i created contact with number (Didnt add "+82" because its a country code) 109-xxx-xxxx, give it my name and my photo and it worked.

It doesn't work because you need to do BOTH. You need to add your number to the sim card and add yourself as a contact.

Me image in Messaging app

Right so I know this question has been asked many times before, but none of the answers I find work for me.
Problem: is that in the messaging app (sms) there is no picture of "Me". Its just a grey rectangle with a white border.
Things I've tried:
Pressing the grey box to bring up menu: Pressing the box does nothing other the simply changing the border color from white to orange.
Clicking menu >> more >> add contact: no such option is available for me
Add myself as a contact in the phonebook: Done this with my number with and without country code and with email.
Add a picture to my profile in GTalk ('Talk'): I've had a picture there for ages, same one as was set on my google account online before I even got this phone. No luck here
I think that's all ive tried, but I may be forgeting something.
Possible explenations:

I have tested it, and that "unknown" is the cause of greyed out picture.
I have 2 sim cards, one is 3UK, and the other one is one2free from Hong Kong. The phone recognises the 3UK phone number but not the one2free (it shows up as unknown).
I have both numbers under the same contact with a avatar / picture.
Nexus one shows up profile pics correctly with my 3UK sim card plugged in, but it greyed out all those pictures when I've plugged in the one2free sim card.
FYI all those messages were sent and received on the one2free (hk) number.
I know (at least in Hong Kong) there are a lot of carriers who don't put the phone number in SIM cards. It wasn't a big problem until now. :/ I wonder if there will be a solution addressing this problem.

What burnduck is refering to is in 'Settings>>About Phone>>Status>>My phone number'. This slot just says 'Unknown', has been this way in 2.1 as well.
All in all that seems like a plausible answer untill Rusty commented the following:

For the record in 'Settings>>Location & security>>Set up SIM card lock' the option to 'Lock SIM card' on/off does not work for me either. I can change the sim pin, but not disable it entirely.
Im wondering if some1 has any clever suggestions or work-arounds I can try. Im using a stock n1 with froyo 2.2. Any help would be greatly apprechiated.
This has now been solved! The problem is that your phone number is not stored in your sim. You need to put your sim in a phone that allows you to alter you "personal phone number". Its usually a setting found under 'special numbers' then something like 'my phone number'. Many people have been using their old phones to do this, some have used iphone. But this has been confirmed to work! Good luck all!
I also have this issue. only 1 SIM card.
i added myself to my contacts. then goto contacts and click add to cantacts. didnt change how number was displayed and didnt add any name and it works fine.

long press the greyed out pic in sms app then add to contacts.
then it will cgo to contacts page at the top just click add to contacts. dont change name or add number.
once added go to contacts select the contact, your number, and add a photo.
I'm having the same issues as described by the OP. Tried everything but still no picture.
I've sent a mail to my provider asking whether it is possible to remotely update my simcard information.

I originally tested going into the messaging app then into an existing conversation between me and some1 else on my contact list. Long pressing the grey pic then did nothing.
Now I just deleted myself and then sent an sms to myself. In this conversation with myself I now have 'Me' and 'my number(in numbers of course)'. I can't do anything with Me, but I can add 'my number' to my contact list as myself with my number and email. But still wont do anything to 'Me'.
Confusing but hopefully u understand.

yeah and im glad u did, thx for the effort. I think it has something to do with the sim card, as everything else should be the same i presume. I have sent an email to my provider, hopefully they will have some insight to come with tomorrow.
yeah, same here, think it has to do with the sim card. which is weird, why dont it just use the google pic instead of using something connected to the sim. weird.

Yeah, I agree. Really strange. I mean the fact that you have to manually add yourself and your number in your own phone book is just kind of funky in my opinion.

Well I wouldn't say its too funky, adding myself to the phonebook is something I've been doing, so that I can trade contact with others, but I think google could have gone with an easier option which is to use the picture of the google accounts. After all, its associated with the phone isn't it?

Yeah, exactly the point I was trying to make.
i added my phone number to my google voice contact number, then i dragged a photo of myself onto the sd card, then edited my contact picture to use that photo. a long drawn out work around, but now it isn't blank at least.
i agree, it's a little stupid that it doesn't just grab your photo from either google or facebook, seeing as how it's totally synced up with those.

Froyo sms threads - how do I set my own photo

I can't seem to find a way to set my own photo/avatar. Anyone?
www.google.com/profiles/
Log into the main account you have setup for your phone and set it there. You can also log into gtalk or gmail and chance the display picture, it'll pull it from there.
I changed the picture, and added my phone number into the details area.
What happens now?
Thanks JCopernicus, I did that and nothing happens even after sync. My display picture is still empty
Didn't work for me either...even added myself in my contacts
Click on your gray image and click on the second icon. Hit the menu button, then edit contact, then change the image.
Bet your phone number reports as 'Unknown' under the settings!
You need to program then number into your SIM before you can sort out the 'Me' picture.
EDIT: see here.
When I click the grey image it does not do anything.
That's because the phone doesn't know your own number, you have to program your SIM in another handset.
I'm not on Frodo but anyhow... Mine was pulled from my Facebook account, didn't ask it to but it did anyhow.

Does your Facebook profile contain your phone number? If so then it just matched it to the number on the SIM would be my guess.

I can't add my number using my phone. I have to take the sim card out and program the sim card to know its own number using another handset?
Yeah annoyingly enough.
Even then programming my own SIM in my spare WM phone has failed me, I need to find another one to try.
I just posted a solution using a Vio FoneMate SIM card reader that can be had for next to nothing and using DeKart Sim Softare Shareware.

You can do it through your Google account online. Download your contacts as csv, edit the fields, then upload the changes. Editing the fields should be easy, if you use find and replace...
Change at least one number from your phone, so you can see which field out gets assigned to...

Contact person won't recognise on Phone

Why till now HTC still have this issue that contact won't recognise if you just dial the number instead of the full format you save on your contacts. On Samsung and iPhone don't have this issue. Can HTC solve this?
Please refer to the attached picture for more details.

OK.. Example, i saved a contact under phone TEST - +601234567890 , So when i went into phone dialing, i enter 1234567890 the number without country code, it won't recognize or display contact TEST, unless i have to enter +601234567890 full format as what i have saved then it will show.

it works for me eg my contact is saved a +312012345678 and when I dial 02012345 it will show my contact, as far as I know this has worked since my desire days. HTC dialer has always been the best for me, being able to search by first, last name and by number in short and long format (iirc the sgs2 couldn't search by last name)...
(edit, I don't know where you are from but is 12345678 a valid number to dial from a mobile phone, we always have to dial an area code first)

I am from Malaysia. The number on the screenshot are just example. Our country code are +6 , so my number format are +601112333345. I just tested it again and also not working. Another number format are friends from Brunei, number format +673 8888888 as +673 country code. Also not showing if i key 8888888, unless 6738888888.

Text Messages mixing up

The feature of the HTC One consolidating all messages to under the same person with different phone numbers is annoying for me.
many people i know have a personal and work mobile phone, so 2 numbers.
but the messaging app consolidates and puts it under the same name, so everytime i want to text i have to go to the menu and select which to send to
is there a way to remove this feature, or the only way is to create 2 contacts for the same person in the phonebook?
TIA
I think you could go to edit contact and unlink the numbers. Not positive but I think it could work.

thanks for the suggestion, haven't tried it out since i downloaded the Go Pro sms right after posting
i think i'll just stay with this app, more options and customizing
