I installed the v6 gingerbread rom but now I can't get into recovery mode at all. I tried button combos (which normally work on my phone) adb etc. Any ideas? (Can't get into download mode either... same problem)
I'm pretty sure recovery is broken with Gingerbread ROM's. I ran a few early ones, and the only way to recover or get back is to flash to stock.
I had to use this trick. Remove battery, SIM, and SDcard. Open Odin One-Click on the PC, put battery back in phone, Hold both Vol UP and Vol Down and plug in USB cable. This should kick it directly into download mode. Flash to stock, etc....
Thanks I'll try it. I didn't even think of that.

Ok i was running a custom version of 2.2 FroYo on my captivate and it was running fine. I backed up my old version using Clockwork Recovery. Well i decided to get brave and flash back to my stock 2.1 ROM.
When i did that alls i can get is the AT&T boot screen. It will sit there for an hour if i left it. I tried entering recovery bode (power, vol up/down) but it just sits at that screen.
Is there any hope to recovering it? I use a MAC but im about to boot Win7 on it to run ODIN, but i cant get into any flash/recvoery mode....
Suggestions?
You want to try and get into Download Mode, not Recovery. Have you tried the various button combos to get into Download Mode yet?
If the various button combos ultimately don't work, you can use something called a JIG to force your phone into Download mode.
What is the button combo for download mode? also with is 'JIG'? Im no total newb but i am new to this who flashing/kernel modifying thing.
I have a Nexus S now which i love but i need the Galaxy running for my AT&T company SIM card....
Also do i NEED ODIN?
There are like 4+ different button combos for Download Mode. If you search, I'm sure you'll find them all. The one I remember is:
1. Remove battery, SIM, microSD card (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone off
3. Hold Volume Up/Volume Down keys, do not let go
4. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery into the phone
If this worked, the phone should almost instantly be in Download Mode.
Once in Download Mode, you want to use Odin (generally the One-Click JF6 version) to flash your phone to a working state again.
A JIG is a microUSB plug that will force your phone into Download Mode, if Download Mode is still possible on your phone. You can make them with a MicroUSB plug and resistors, or buy one. The link in my signature is an example of what a purchased one would look like.
I was trying to switch to Cognition V.2.3.8 using clockwork recovery like was shown on that thread. I did everything correctly and everything worked exactly like was explained. I got to where it was loading the zip in clockwork mod and it froze. Now my phone only gets the ATT screen when turned on and it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to just the recovery screen, but the phone is cleared, nothing will boot, all info was wiped I'm assuming that's including the previously flashed version of cognition. I tried Odin but couldn't really get it going. Not sure what to do. I used Odin for my last ROM, and clock work recovery didn't go quite as well obviously. Please someone give me some good news, and help me unbrick my phone.
Have you tried doing any of the three button combos to get into download mode and restore to stock possibly?..if none of the buttons work, you might have to make/use a jig to get it into download mode. Anyway, just try getting into download and try to restore to stock for now.
Your phone needs to be in "Download" mode to use Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Scroll down to step 1 and try those "Key Combinations" until one of them gets you into download mode. Once you are in, flash back to stock with Odin. Hopefully that works and solves your problem.
If no key combos work, then you need a jig. My phone is one of the few that don't work with the key combos, while my last 2 did fine.

Like the others stated you need to be in DOWNLOAD MODE to get Odin to work.
Also there is a specific method to get Odin to recognize your device and then flash it back to stock:
Turn on ODIN first.
Do NOT have your phone plugged in when Odin is started.
Make sure your phone is powered off.
Hold down the Volume +/- Buttons on your phone then plug in your USB cord. It should go directly into DOWNLOAD MODE and Odin should state that your phone is connected.
Click the Go button and watch Odin do it's magic.
If that didnt work....
Try the "Battery Trick"
Unplug the phone from USB - Power it off.
Pull the battery, SIM, and SDCard (if applicable) from your phone.
Turn on Odin
Plug in the phone to USB Cord (with everything still out of it)
Hold down the VOLUME +/- Buttons
Then while doing all this - pop the battery back in the back of your phone.
Rinse and repeat a few times if it doesn't go directly into DOWNLOAD MODE to make sure you are doing this correctly.
And if THAT doesn't work.
Do the jig (Build a jig - there are a ton of posts here in the Q&A and Q&A sticky on how to do this.)
Hey guys,
I searched everywhere, and could not find an answer. Heres what happened:
Messed up Cyanogen install, so I used a One Click installer to go back to stock.
Once stock, popped phone in download mode, and used Odin to flash the CM7 kernel. Odin said PASS
Unplugged USB and held both volume rockers and the power button.
Phone rebooted (i let go at the ATT screen), and it now sticks at the Galaxy S / cyanogen(mod) screen.
I have tried these methods (for both download and recovery mode)
Held both rockers and plugged in USB (the battery just came up)
Put battery in, held one rocker at a time and power
Tried ADB, but it can't find the device.
Also tried holding all three buttons (both volume rockers and power) and the phone did the same thing.
Odin won't pick it up, ADB won't pick it up, and it seems that I can't get into Download or Recovery mode.
Any ideas? Just I just buy a Jig to go into download mode?
Had that happen to me when I tried to ditch cm7 and go back to stock so I could flash serendipity. I lost my 3 button combo flashing cm7 for some reason.. worked fine before cm7 for both recovery and download mode, and neither worked after flashing cm7.
Solution is to just use a jig to go back to stock and flash a new rom from there. Or you can do what I did and use a jig to go back to stock, then flash cog 4.2 or something that includes an sbl with the 3 button fix.
Hi ..
The same thing happened on my phone yesterday i was trying to install the MIUI rom on my phone.
The phone is stuck on the Galaxy S Cyanogen Mod Screen .
ADB doesn't detect my phone.
I never had the 3 button combo working on my Captivate for AT&T.
I used the adb commands to enter recovery and download mode..
Now Since the phone itself is not getting detected i can't even use adb commands.
What do i Do next.??
Please help..
would really appreciate suggestions...
thnks...
Get a jig, saved my phone a few weeks ago after a bad rom install.
I have a captivate model SGH-i896
I want to flash custom rom, it seem I screw that up some how.
Now I cannot get back into Download mode
What I did is I trip on the cable when I was trying to flash I897UCJH2 when using Odin.
Only thing I have on Odin was I897UCJH2 and 512.pit
I have try all type of combination on the the phone, button first, battery first, cable first.
What should I do now, short of returning the phone to Rogers and get another one?
Did I hard brick it because I897UCJH2 contain a bootloader?
Please help.
Some extra info: My phone can still be detected via usb, and during Odin the device still show.
Pull the battery, use the button combo you usually use and when that screen comes on and odin detects it try and flash from that screen.
can you explain the steps a little more?
this is what I did.
-open odin
-hold down vol up+down + power
-plug in usb
-put in battery
in that sequence, and that did not work
you may not see the dl mode screen. that is just an image in the firmware, if the flash was disconnected before that image was loaded to the phone the only image there for it to call on when dl mode is started is the phone...!....pc screen. so if odin recognizes it when in that screen try and flash from there.
if that still doesnt work i say make/buy a jig. they are never not a good idea to have.
I just recently flashed the 2.3.3 GB firmware from SamFirmware. It actually works quite nicely. I just recently encountered a power button issue and would like to flash back to stock before sending the phone in, but the problem I have is not being able to go into download mode. I'm not quite sure what the problem is. I have an ATT captivate, and have done it in the past before. When I turn the phone off, the phone will vibrate like it does in 2.2Froyo but the back light for the buttons will remain on(possibly until the battery dies). Every button trick I try only cycles through the att logo screen and when I have the phone plugged in it always shows the battery charging when the phone is off and plugged in. Regardless, I can get to recovery mode, but never download mode.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
You do know that download mode in GB (2.3.x) is Vol Down +pwr buton, right?
Assuming it turns on you can try adb commands. All else fails jig will force it in to download mode regardless.

Yea, and that's not working. I only get recovery mode every time.

Not true. I897 GB bootloaders Download mode combination is Vol up+Vol down+Insert PC connected USB cable. The combination you said is I9000 Bootloaders.
But i think the majority are on i9000 boot loaders.
True regardless OP didn't specify what bootloaders he is using, so just covering basics.
If all else fails, remove your battery, sim chip, microsd chip, then plug in your usb cable, hold vol up & vol down and put your battery in.
Should go right in to download mode.
the phone boots. Use adb.
install adb (although imo you should have done that BEFORE ever flashing your phone)
open a prompt
Change directories to where you have it installed.
Then enter the command:
adb reboot download
and you're dl mode.
Make sure you have usb debugging turned ON.
Or make/buy a jig.
Here's another problem, and I do thank you guys and gals greatly for helping me out. The computer recognizes my phone and the drivers when booted up normally, but in download mode the drivers fail to install or be read. Therefore, I cannot flash back to stock. I've tried uninstalling drivers and reinstalling manually on my computer and still nothing.

Thanks! I'll be sure to try that when I get home. Have you had any problems with the GB 2.3.3 leak that came out few weeks ago or have you not tried it?
ive just used cognition only since it's release and like it so far
