[Q] Darky's rom v 7.7 reception issue - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys , i have flashed several rom and i really like the look and feel of the darky's rom however i have really bad reception issue. sometimes at home where i usually have full bar i have no signals at all , or last night i was traveling to Oklahoma city with my friend who is running captivate on stock rom and he had full bar while i had no service at all ! any idea what i'm doing wrong ?

Usually better to ask in the darky thread , but anyways.
Did you flash back to stock and then upgrade to darkys or did you upgrade on top of a previous rom? If the latter, flash back to stock and reinstall.
If the former, try a different modem. I am not using the modem or kernel that came with darkys rom. I am using the kernel with speedmod and ugjl2 modem and so far I have great reception. Of course that isn't saying much as I always have great reception using my cell device (can't think of its name atm.)

You are running the I9000 version and not the captivate port. This alone wont cause problems if you have the reoriented kernel but the jpy modem you have will. I believe it does not have the 850 band. Flash a different modem from the modem thread in the development section and you should be good to go.
If im mistaken please forgive as its 7:30am and I still haven't slept yet.

thanks for your reply ! well yea i did one click odin to stock 2.1 and then flash this using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868262
and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808286 flashing xcaliburinhand's latest reoriented kernel (odin version) with voodoo (I9000_reoriented_v2.3.0) so i'm not sure what is the issue here ... can you all guide me what modem should i use ? i was actually thinking about the same thing because i use to have a phone that didn't have 850 bad and i had this kind of issue ! so any help of how and where to get a modem to flash will be greatly appreciated !

I personally use JK4. A lot of people find that JL3 works better for them. Either way at the moment these are the top two modems available. Both can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9134296&postcount=2 and are flashable via CWM.
Also next time you are going to flash a version of Darky's just use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890429 or any one that ytt3r starts because he ports them over to the captivate and you don't have to worry about messing with kernels or anything not working properly.

thanks i'll try it next week , since i'm running Axura 2.2 and so far i like it

Kernels/Modems

Hey guys I'm really new at this, can some someone explain what a Kernel/Modem is. I know what the Kernel is used for but, there are some many different Kernels that people use and I have no idea on how to pick which one is right for me. Currently I'm running Cognition 3.04 with Stock Kernel with Voodoo Lag fix.
a modem deals with signal and data speeds (different modems work better for people in different places) i9000 modems can only be used with i9000 roms and vice versa for the captivate roms (cognition)
modems thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272)
a kernel deals with drivers (not 100% sure) oc/uv (overclock, undervolt), free ram, and tweaks that make it faster/smoother.

Is it samsung way of releasing firmware with no details as to what new is added or what improvements have been done?
I am using I9003 & kies tell me an update is available with no info what so ever about the FW. I even tried updating but it failed.
Is there any official source on samsung firmware so I could read as to what is new in PDA:KB2/Phone:KA5/CSC:KA6
Short answer.... No

Is JQ1 better than JL2 for Bell? I've been out of the loop with modem updates over the last while because I've been using JL2.
I don't know if it is better. The GPS locked almost instantly. Battery can't be commented on yet because I haven't used it long enough. One thing other people are saying is that they aren't getting any reception when they leave major cities so I depends on your location I guess. I'm with bell but in Toronto so for me it hasn't given me any problems.

can you double check if your 850mhz band still works?
This is how to enable 850mhz band. All credits to Linkness and the Rom Kitchen members

Kernels have to match modems. kb1 to kb1, i9000 to i9000.
So is running a i9000 kernal better than using a captivate kernal?
if so what are the pros and cons if any?
rom kernal match
Look. I've tried different kernals with stock froyo 2.2 and learned the hard way with sticking with stock modem. Call quality was crap and battery life severly dimished with having a improper mix of modems and kernals. Since those mistakes I run continuum 4 with onix kernal 2.05 and jvk modem and have great batt life and call quality and download speeds are phenomenal. The best way I have found without going flash crazy is to see what the experienced people are using on their phones. The have it listed in their stats at the bottom of each posting they make. These people have been modding for awhile and know by experience what works best. Try that and you should have no problems getting the best combo for your captivate. Hope this answers your question. Good luck!
hsupa is over rated the phone already has hsdpa. hsupa may be good if you want to video chat or teather. but if you must get hspa in full you want to flash a different rom. no one has figured out a workaround for the brokn bluetooth calling with a rom/modem mismatch on a north american captivate rom.
as for the kernel, well i haven't tried an i9000 or i9010 or i9088 kernel on kb1 but they all should work. also i haven't tried changing the modem without changing the kernel but i believe that should also work. even if it is not recomended. i have never adhered to the notion that modems and kernels should match and had good luck with modems for t959d i9000m and i9088 on i9000 i9010 and i9088 kernels without major problems. it does seem that the older modems do not work all that great on the captivate with call volume or quality problems regardless of rom and kernel. but the kp1 from i9088 and kc1 from i9000 are both great on the captivate, i think i give kc1 the edge. if it weren't for those two and maybe others that i didn't try i would recomend leaving it all kb1 for the simple fact that a phone should make good phone calls.
the adage that the modem and kernel must match is true. ie. i9000 kernel/i9000 modem i897 kernel/i897 modem....it is absolutely true you must match those. if you use an i897 modem with an i9000 kernel or vice versa, you will have data but no voice. its not just a myth

GT-I9000M Signal improvement

Hello all,
I recently rooted my Bell Galaxy s and flashed speedmod-k13e-500hz so now my phone is pretty fast and smooth but would like to improve my constant low signal issue and choppy phone calls ( also my batt life has decreased since rooting and applying speedmod with lagfix enabled and have cleared batt stats in cwm) Im on stock UGKC1 and am wondering if i can fix my issues. I would also like to flash 2.3.3 but wonder which rom/modem combo would be best for me and also a litlle how to since i believe i need gingerbread bootloader but am a little confused.
Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help or point me in the right direction.
GG
I find KC1 modem works really well... If you are having issues with that modem try JK4 or JL2 or the telus modem (TLJ or something) first 2 are both older versions of Bell Modems... as for 2.3.3, I have used simply honey, Juwe, GingerReal and current flashing Darky.
So far in order I like:
Juwe - JVH
Simply Honey - JVH
GingerReal - JVO
Darky - JVH (unkown, but loved the froyo version)
I always flash KC1 modem with gingerbread
I think the JVo modem is the best so far, but you can test which is the best for your region and phone.
Exactly, the JVO modem in the Toronto area is garbage, but probably really good in other places. Your 'default' modem is probably always a safe bet
Thanks for the replies. I will compare JVO to KC1 and see which one performs better. I just bought an Incredible S and seems to be getting better reception than the SGS in general.

I897 modem/kernel on I9000 rom.

This actually seems logically possible.
If we can use a reoriented i9000 kernel + i9000 modem on a captivate rom, why can't we use a matching captivate modem+ kernel on an i9000 rom?
I thought the important thing is to match the modem and kernel...

You're right. As long as they match it's fine.

Well, accidentally I ended with this configuration:
ROM: Apex 9.2 (JVR)
KERNEL: Talon 4.4.22 (JVR)
MODEM: KH3
Teoretically this shouldnt be happening but everything seems to be working O.K. No Force Closes, WCDMA 850, average battery life, WiFi, etc.

you have always been able to run mix/match, until you need to make an actual phone call. no voice.

Yes I ran that combo until I got a phone call and the other person could not hear me and the volume was cutting in and out flashed back to JL2 all is good again
Running Dlevs 5.0, and latest talon kernel, modem JL2
As you can see from my signature I am still running 2.2 ROMs. I just prefer the stability, and have zero issues with both that I am using now on different captivates. One of them, Continuum 4.1 is and i9000 rom, using Onyx kernel with jk4, the other is the i897 Cognition, cog kernel, kb1.
I think, based on what I am reading here, I will try to intall the i897 modem and kernel on the Continuum 4.1 ROM. I really like this ROM but REALLY prefer the sound quality of the i897 roms because of the Audience chip.
I will experiment this weekend and report back. As of now, I prefer not to do this kind of experimentation with the GB roms. Anyone else interested in seeing how this turns out?

Hi Jack man,
if you are still considering flashing i897 kernel & modem , my captivate is still Froyo 2.2 stock (rooted), with the uckb2 modem and kernel 2.6.32.9. I already have a dump of the kernel (I checked is working) and could send you a dump of the uckb2 modem (unchecked, I'm unsure about flashing this one back, since I have the 100% battery shutdown issue and still considering a RMA) if you are willing to try.
Let me know,
Angel
Well, I experimented. Here's what I used and how it went.
I installed Continuum 4.1 (a froyo 2.2 rom) then flashed the Exist kb1 kernel along with the kb1 modem. I thought everything was going to be fine. Calls worked fine, data seemed ok but slower than I was expecting, but when I went to turn on wifi if just didn't work. I made sure it was't the router - my wife's phone was working fine on the router, along with a laptop on it.
it would also not connect to the neighbor's router either. Flashed back to Cog4.5.3 - wifi worked fine.
Too bad, because I really like the small features of Continuum 4.1
If anyone has any ideas to fix the wifi in this setup let me know. I would love to keep it.
