What is New in XWJS8 ? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is New in XWJS8 ?

Ask samsung...cause we don't.
Sent via my Android powered Galaxy S

Is it samsung way of releasing firmware with no details as to what new is added or what improvements have been done?
I am using I9003 & kies tell me an update is available with no info what so ever about the FW. I even tried updating but it failed.
Is there any official source on samsung firmware so I could read as to what is new in PDA:KB2/Phone:KA5/CSC:KA6

Short answer.... No

Is JQ1 better than JL2 for Bell? I've been out of the loop with modem updates over the last while because I've been using JL2.

I don't know if it is better. The GPS locked almost instantly. Battery can't be commented on yet because I haven't used it long enough. One thing other people are saying is that they aren't getting any reception when they leave major cities so I depends on your location I guess. I'm with bell but in Toronto so for me it hasn't given me any problems.

can you double check if your 850mhz band still works?

This is how to enable 850mhz band. All credits to Linkness and the Rom Kitchen members

[Q] Darky's rom v 7.7 reception issue

hey guys , i have flashed several rom and i really like the look and feel of the darky's rom however i have really bad reception issue. sometimes at home where i usually have full bar i have no signals at all , or last night i was traveling to Oklahoma city with my friend who is running captivate on stock rom and he had full bar while i had no service at all ! any idea what i'm doing wrong ?
Usually better to ask in the darky thread , but anyways.
Did you flash back to stock and then upgrade to darkys or did you upgrade on top of a previous rom? If the latter, flash back to stock and reinstall.
If the former, try a different modem. I am not using the modem or kernel that came with darkys rom. I am using the kernel with speedmod and ugjl2 modem and so far I have great reception. Of course that isn't saying much as I always have great reception using my cell device (can't think of its name atm.)

You are running the I9000 version and not the captivate port. This alone wont cause problems if you have the reoriented kernel but the jpy modem you have will. I believe it does not have the 850 band. Flash a different modem from the modem thread in the development section and you should be good to go.
If im mistaken please forgive as its 7:30am and I still haven't slept yet.

thanks for your reply ! well yea i did one click odin to stock 2.1 and then flash this using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868262
and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808286 flashing xcaliburinhand's latest reoriented kernel (odin version) with voodoo (I9000_reoriented_v2.3.0) so i'm not sure what is the issue here ... can you all guide me what modem should i use ? i was actually thinking about the same thing because i use to have a phone that didn't have 850 bad and i had this kind of issue ! so any help of how and where to get a modem to flash will be greatly appreciated !
I personally use JK4. A lot of people find that JL3 works better for them. Either way at the moment these are the top two modems available. Both can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9134296&postcount=2 and are flashable via CWM.
Also next time you are going to flash a version of Darky's just use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890429 or any one that ytt3r starts because he ports them over to the captivate and you don't have to worry about messing with kernels or anything not working properly.
thanks i'll try it next week , since i'm running Axura 2.2 and so far i like it

Kernels/Modems

Hey guys I'm really new at this, can some someone explain what a Kernel/Modem is. I know what the Kernel is used for but, there are some many different Kernels that people use and I have no idea on how to pick which one is right for me. Currently I'm running Cognition 3.04 with Stock Kernel with Voodoo Lag fix.
a modem deals with signal and data speeds (different modems work better for people in different places) i9000 modems can only be used with i9000 roms and vice versa for the captivate roms (cognition)
modems thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272)
a kernel deals with drivers (not 100% sure) oc/uv (overclock, undervolt), free ram, and tweaks that make it faster/smoother.
gb's kernel thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887315)
seitron's kernel thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828052)
if you want more clarifications just ask
ok so with my current configeration, ,I can run any captivate based rom right?(im running cog3.04) and say I wanted to try those i9000 roms I have to change my modem not my kernel, correct?

[Q] Rogers Captivate Voodoo LagFix

Am I able to install the Voodoo lag fix on my Captivate? I know the AT&T version is supported but I rather not brick my device. Please respond!
Thanks,
Androidfann
I have a Rogers Captivate, and I have used Voodoo for a while.
Make sure you have root access, and go nuts. It really does improve the quality.
have u used voodoo with 2.2?
i just got the captivate and am now on stock 2.2 with root and oclf installed. is it worth changing to voodoo?

OCLF uses ext2, which is less safe than ext4, which is used by Voodoo. If you want Voodoo, flash the JJ4 + Voodoo kernel in the dev section.

Depends. The newer Kernals really unlock a lot of features that we didn't have before, and you don't have now.
If you use your phone as your media player, than the benefits of Voodoo sound were enough to make me switch.
hey guys, i got the official rogers 2.2, can i still use voodoo? what good roms use rogers 2.2 as a base and include voodoo? any suggestions?
Hey folks, another Canadian Rogers Captivate user here...just wanted to confirm if I can use the Voodoo stable 5.4.1 for Froyo 2.2.1 as it looks like I'm on 2.2 stock (and rooted)? I'm new to android and a bit scared, but the Voodoo fix seems easy enough..
No one seems to be answering the main question posed here.
For us STOCK Rogers froyo users which version of voodoo should we use?
I am not running a custom rom, I have not used Odin (used Kies to install official froyo update). I can't seem to find a version of voodoo lagfix specifically for stock Rogers 2.2. If anyone e has it installed can you point us in the right direction?

Hi there to all asking about Voodoo for Rogers,
I have tried suckerpunch (based on speedmod)
Also tried the newest speedmod 13c
No problems with either.
I personally have tried voodoo (5.4.1 and the one for att captivate) with no luck at all.

People have been using the SpeedMod kernel which is the Rolls Royce of kernels; it enables a lot of the Captivates features and power. However, the Kernel is based on the i9000 kernel, which is the sister handset to the Captivate. The kernels are compatible across both phones, but the stock modems on captivates don't seem to do as well with some setups; you'll see this in the sprawling thread dedicated to that topic. Some people will flash an i9000 modem as well, and people seem to have varying results with different combinations.
Having said that, if you don't want to use bluetooth, the stock modem is perfectly serviceable. You could go ahead and flash your SpeedMod kernel and see vast improvements is phone function without tweaking in the handset's general recovery menu. There's also plenty there to keep the tweaksters busy
However, new to the scene is the same developers amalgam of his voodoo lagfix in a stock Rogers Froyo kernel. I'm running it now and I am still testing and checking things, but it seems fine though. There are some caveats to respect though, I just spent nearly an entire day getting my phone back to Stock Froyo after doing a bad job of 'un'lagfixing before flashing kernels. However, if it's your first endeavour into flashing or modifying your phone's software, it would be a relatively safe bet. You should not have any lagfix installed nor should you even think about doing it without doing a Titanium Backup of your phone, which would mean rooting.
Hope that helps a bit.

There is a 1-click Gingerbread UCKF1 thread in the dev forum. Thats what I am currently running and its working well so far.. The only issue I have is my GPS is crap.. but it was crap with stock froyo aswell so no big deal there.
I'm on the rogers i896 also.

It's sort of officially unofficial. It would seem to be a prebuild for a forthcoming Gingerbread release, it's tight and a great daily driver.
I did use Odin; follow the usual safety procedures and all will be well. The modem that comes with the package is great, but my 4G no longer works, it's 3G for now, but I got terrible 4G speeds anyway, so there's not much of a downgrade there.
The GPS did not function so great straight away, but I keyed in the code *#3214789650# - Settings - SUPL Settings, and changed the server to supl.google.com and the server port to 7276. I got much better results from that configuration.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the help of gps friend ... I have it installed and this great .. But you have some voovoo installed, can not find any on the net .. The voodoo 5.5.x served me just to change the start GTI9000, I do not like .. Thanks for your help..

[Q]Kernel and ROM based on 2.3.3 official update on the euro galaxy S

im new in this section.
i have a nexus S my self.
but i am asking this, because my GF is getting the galaxy S today/tomorrow.
and i was wondering.
is there any ROM thats beyond the official euro update 2.3.3.
and is as stock as possible?(like the nexus S)
(at first ill let her fidle with touchwis though)
and i also need A kernel with lagfix and a bit of save over-clocking for the official euro update 2.3.3(and/or the rom any one suggested here)
thank you in advance
there are many 2.3.3 custom ROMs available for the SGS, although the SGS does NOT come stock with 2.3.3..
2.3.3 is also not available 'officially' through KIES, but it is available on a website www.samfirmware.com
which is 'leaked' official version.
and finally, EVERY custom Kernel supports lagfix, and majority of them also support Overclocking and Undervolting

my bad lol
anyway you can get a good kernel / lagfix with 2.2.1 and just apply a gingerbread theme, until the update arrives,
if your GF is anything like mine she wont even notice
awww bummer.
the problem with my gf is,she is pretty interested in what my nexus S
and my spica(that she's using for now.until she has the galaxy s) can do.
adn she asks pretty often, can i do that, how do i do this ect.
and mostly my answer is: you need root or thats only with custom kernel/rom.
2.3.3 custom ROMs with close to stock themes

Questions about Bootloaders, Kernels and Modems

I am new to Galaxy S but have had experience with roms, kernels and radios from a G1.
I started with Samsung 2.2 firmware and rooted it using Cyanogenmod wiki page and flashed the latest MIUI. I know kernels change speed and include Voodoo colours and sound for Galaxy S. I also now radios can change signal and gps accuracy.
1)Are modems the same as radios and if so where do I find a list of them?
2)What is the best bootloader and why does the Gingerbread one not have sd cards work? Also what else doesn't work?
3)How can I check which radio I have and if I flash any bootloaders how do I check that?
Radio, Modem and Baseband are all the same thing. You can check which one you have by going to Settings >About Phone and checking the Baseband Version.
A new modem is easy to flash as a zip file from Recovery and you can find lots of them by searching in the Dev forum, however make sure you flash a modem that is for CM7 since you have Miui installed. For guidence you can search for Modem in the Miui or CM7 thread in the Dev forum.
As for bootloader, there is no way to check which you have, but as you installed Miui directly over 2.2 you should have the froyo bootloaders. CM7 and Miui were designed for froyo bootloaders. Some people say that GB bootloaders have better battery life but if you have GB bootloaders with CM7 you can't access you external SD card and other things may not work properly. I would suggest staying with froyo loaders for now and seeing how it goes.

I have read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9579987&postcount=11945
but I don't know if it still JPP is the best radio as this was back in December. For people in the UK what would be the best overall radio?
can anyone answer me which is the best CM7 modem for ORANGE ROMANIA? tks
Try jvp or jpy, I'm on orange uk, insanity cm and they both work fine for me don't forget you need cm7 modem, there are 2 threads in dev for this

About bootloaders
I have a SGS GT-I9000, and following
directions from ROM kitchen, I installed a Froyo 2.2.1 version.
It's I9000XXJPY with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22 kernel
and it says Rom kitchen v11.1-ZSJPK.
I wanted to install a Gingerbread version from ROM kitchen as well, but it says I have to make sure I have at least JVH bootloaders. Ummm, do I ? And what to do so i could install a gingerbread to my SGS ?
I installed a 2.2.1 froyo also from ROM kitchen I9000XXJVO with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22, build number XWJSD, hoping i'll install newer bootloaders with it.
But, i had problems with messaging so i'm gonna have to revert to previous one.
Do i have proper bootloaders or not and what could happen if i tried to install Gingerbread and don't have proper bootloaders.
Thanks in advance
