Flashing a ROM to an unlocked phone? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm usually over at the vibrant forum but my friend really wants me to work some magic on his phone. He has an HTC Hero with Cricket service, originally Sprint. I want to know if I root and flash a ROM to the phone will it undo anything that Cricket has done to give him service?

You can make a nand and try it. I doubt the rom would mess up the service, radio is below recovery/rom levels. that said, I don't have cricket, so who knows.
I have a request, please go back into jaybobs ROM thread and edit your post to say nothing, because it has NOTHING to do with his thread. If you can't find an answer in Q+A you shouldn't go into a rom thread with a completely unrelated question.
I hope you're able to help your friend.

Thanks. Will do.

Never minds sounds like it's been taken care of.

noob htc dream for rogers help me put normal android on it!!

im about to buy a htc dream from canada thats fro
rogers network.. i want to unlock it and use it for at&t in the us but i hqve how rogers destroyes android .. im totally new to all this what do i do to get normal android 1.5 or 1.6 on the device.. again im totally new to this.. ive tried to research this and its so damn confusing i dont know where to start.. i dont need some crazy hero rom that doesnt work right.. unless it works snappy with no drawbacks..i just dont want rogers crap crippled android.. any step by step guide would be greatly approciated.. thanks
Step 1 read the other posts that tell you that you can't root the rogers phone with the new update yet.
Step 2 wait.
i read you cant do it because they will dissconnect voice and data but im not usuing it on rogers so why would it matter.. also ive never until now even looked it up on how to do anything to these phones.. and when i first started looking i found a bunch of stuff saying you can do it but it was like 2 years old so how am i supposed to know you cant do it now..
Do you have the phone now?
If you do you need to check your Build Number. If it = 1.89.631.1 146733 CL#94714....
Then there is nothing you can do.
If you haven't gotten the phone then if you get it from Rogers you get the above build and there is nothing you can do.
If you already have the phone and it doesn't match that build then you should be ok. you root and you will need to change the radio to the EBI0 radio. There is a guide by Haykuro some where on here to root and change the radio.
As for unlocking that is not really discussed here. You need to buy an unlock code or if you know someone on T-mobile you can give them your IME and have them ask T-mobile for the unlock code.

Use these guys to unlock the Dream for $5, lots of good reviews, very safe. Read all about it at RedFlagDeals.com.

[Q] How to Unroot my Sprint Hero

Hello,
can someone please tell me how to unroot my sprint hero back to factory? i have searched all forums and confuse on even where to start. If possible, direct me to the right thread.
i am using the damage control v2.05 rom firmware version 2.1-update 1.
any help is appreciated.
thank you,
VR
Wrong place mate
i dont know how you would do it for a sprint device, but for our heros we would use one of the official updates from the htc site
Moved to CDMA hero Q&A
just run the ruu found on the sprint site or htc site it'll take you back to stock
Go to either Sprint or HTCs site download the ruu and run it.
thanks all for the response. i will try that.
also sorry for posting on the wrong place.

[Q] Rooting Questions

I am looking at rooting my phone. I have a few questions but I'm not sure where to post at because I'm new on this site. I read through some root instructions, but the creators were not specific on some areas.
Does it matter what carrier I have if I root my HTC Hero as long as it is CDMA? I have Alltel. The instructions I read for this were not specific as to carriers, they just said CDMA HTC Hero.
My other question is when you root your HTC Hero, is flashing a new ROM to the phone part of the rooting process or something different. The instructions I read also did not clarify this.
Thanks
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
I don't know whether the carrier matters or not when rooting. You don't have to flash a ROM when rooting, but I would venture to say the the vast majority of folks are rooting to add a custom ROM. Especially with the Hero, due to it's limitations.
Edit: I found this post here. So I would research that a bit as far as carriers.
If you want to stay stock but remove bloatware, you can just root and remove with an app like root explorer. I would think about at least an overclocked kernel.

i know there are people on here who rooted from Alltel, the only thing is the majority of people have sprint.. so most of the custom stuff will come with sprints banner on it.. there are ways to change them and none of it is too hard at all to do.. its not a bad idea to try out some custom roms even if they are just custom versions of the stock rom..
i would check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674788 it gives a break down of everything you will need to know both with the site itself as well as rooting your hero in general.. a good thing to keep in mind before posting a lot of questions is google is your friend, a search of the forum will bring up most answers to anything.. a lot of people around here get really ticked if you post questions that have already been answered, or if you post it in the wrong section.. but check out the link, any other questions feel free to ask..
I found this blog on rooting. It doesn't say anything about carrier. Does anyone know? It just says CDMA, which is what my phone is.

you can root being alltel, rooting in general is not carrier specific.. if you flash certain roms it may change your provider banner to sprint because it is the most common, but even that can be changed back and it doesnt affect your radio or prl.. if its a CDMA hero the CDMA root process should work..
read the post that posted above yours, and check out the link.. literally tons of information about rooting..
check my hero rooting guide, it is NOT carrier specific and will work on Alltell. fast and simple way to root.

There are few Tmobile note users because it was only for sale a very short time.
Use the ATT note forum, it is the same device. If you want to use an ATT ROM and there isn't a Tmobile equivalent, use the instructions in the "vibration fix" thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41533675
And then you can run any ROM. Be sure you understand that thread though.
Really? That's awesome I'll check it out.... Thnx..:thumbup:

I never got the hang of flashing AT&T ROMs on the T-mobile version. I asked a couple of times in their forums whether certain ROMS would work, but didn't get much of a response. Maybe i'll try one and see. As long as it doesn't brick my phone.
Off topic...
It works fine on any rom, but pay attention to that thread and also learn about the ROMs. The boot image and replacement files that you use have to come from a similar Tmobile ROM. So if you want to run a 4.2.2 ROM, take the files from something like cyanogenmod 10.1.0. If you wanted to use a 4.1.2 ROM, then that would be cyanogenmod 10.0. ICS =cm9.
That boot image is basically the kernel. You cannot flash ATT kernels.
Warning. Might ruin your phone doing this.
