Who did NOT put on a screen protector? - Nook Color Accessories

I haven't put one on mine (yet). I have a case that does cover the screen, but who knows something will slide in between and rub up against the screen.
That being said, who HASN'T put on a screen protector and doesn't plan to? I'm kind of against them because not only do I struggle with putting them on, I always find some imperfections (which drives me bonkers).

Just got mine two days ago. Rooted it. Loaded apps. Lovin it and finally, to get to your question, no I have not and don't plan on getting one. Never use them on phones so I don't plan on starting. I really don't think they are needed and I also think they degrade the screen performance. I could be wrong but JMO.

I haven't put one on, have thought about it but since I got my case haven't found the need. I just give it a good wipe of my microfiber cloth once in a while.

I bought some, but putting it on became quite a hassle. I touched the sticky side of one putting a nice fingerprint on it (arg), and I can NEVER get all of the dust / air-bubbles out, so it ends up just driving me nuts.
I ended up trashing them.

If you buy the screen protectors at a B&N store, they will install for you at no extra charge. Plus you get a microfiber cloth. I haven't noticed any degrade in screen performance.

I put the anti-glare screen protector on the day I got my NC. I've been happy with it and the anti-glare version goes on incrediblincredibly easy as it's a bit thicker than the regular kind. Just thought I'd share for those of you who want one but hate putting them on.

I did the exact same thing.

I did not have one on mine as I plan on trying to exchange it again, but I bought a screen protector for a laptop from $5 Below and cut it to fit..
Works nicely

While I know B&N would put one on for me, I have other things to spend the $15 (or so) dollars on. Plus there's no guarantee the person there will install it to meet my OCDness.

I haven't and i don't plan to.

Same here, I put mine on about 15 minutes after opening it. Haven't had any problems. I used the water/baby shampoo spray with it that came with my BodyGaurdz for my phone and it went on without any problems. Within 20 minutes all the water was gone and the protector wasn't even noticeable

I feel that Im pretty good at putting them on. I use the dry install type like Realook for all my phones and the B&N anti glare for the NC. This is what I do if you ever want to give it a try. Make sure everything is laid out and ready. Turns fans off if your room has one, close windows, etc..
Wash your hands throughly, important that all oil comes off
Spray the air with some sort of cleaner. My favorite is Monster Cable LCD TV cleaner
Clean the device with cleaner and microfiber cloth
Spray air again around your area you are working, wait a few secs for it to fall from air
Remove a very small portion of the backing enough to line up the entire bottom edge of protector
with protector lined up, use a credit card or squeegee to push protector on while backing automatically comes off all the way up.
this leaves minimal bubble and works for me almost every single time. your hands really never touch any sticky side and when you slide the squeegee up it automatically removes the backing for you. I have yet to trash a protector and have to get another. if you have dust, then carefully pull back and use a toothpick to get the dust particle off and reapply. Hope this helps someone.

i bought this tablet over other comparable android tabs (gtab, archos, etc) due to its beautiful screen. no way im putting a screen protector over it. i use one on my phone, but only because it travels in my pocket.

I bought the anti-glare protector from B&N. I used a microfiber cloth thing that came with this windshield cleaning kit I got for Christmas to clean the screen and went over it a few times with the supplied cloth to remove dust. I was able to apply the protector without trapping a single air bubble, piece of lint, fingerprint or anything else. While it hasn't done much for reducing glare, it has helped tremendously with fingerprint grease and in reducing the friction between my finger and the screen.

This sums up my experience as well. It's worth it just for the fingerprint protection.

I have learned that going in the bathroom, turning on the shower and allowing the steam to take the dust out of the air is the only way to ensure that there are no air bubbles.
I also have nearby some scotch tape so that if there is a speck of dust or lint, I can apply the tap to the sticky side of the screen protector without getting my fingerprints all over it.

Thanks, I think I might have to have another go at it.

Been naked on 4 previous smart phones. Currently naked on DroidX, Viewsonic Gtab and Nook color. Haven't had any problems with any of the devices.

My phones i usually put one on there because i put it in and out of pocket but Nook color is also naked for me besides a Hard case snap cover I got off eBay.

NC : Screen Surface: Sexy Silky Glass/Diy

Warning!!!!!!!! You really can crack your glass by following the directions below, Please, read no further and leave now. If you, crack your screen, set your house on fire, or sever an artery (broken glass) then bleed out and die......well, you were warned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, if your still here, read on and good luck.
Samsung Galaxy S Screens are smooth and silky! Even the name, gorilla - tough and glass- vulnerable, says sex;
Well, how can we get a sexy Fay Wray G.Tab screen surface from a humble sandpapered plain Jane surfaced NC screen?
The secret is............RAINX.....That's right, the same stuff you want on your windshield in a downpour, will with proper application, impart that silky smoothness you secretly crave.
APPLICATION:
1. Use "The original" rainX. (Caution: it is flammable)
2. Clean glass surface really, really...no really good. (Remove oils, alcohol works)
3. Use clean paper towels, fold into squares (4 or 5 )
4. Dampen towel applicator and scrub surface (Don't Crack Your Screen! Work into micropores of glass surface)
5. Dry to haze (for humidity over 10% use a blow dryer...low heat!)
6. Polish methodically...lots of clean dry paper towels (Don't Crack Your Screen!)
7. REPEAT (It took me 3 times)
Warning!!!!!! Do not, I repeat, Do not allow your girl/boy/wife/husband to touch the new silky surface; not if you ever want either of them back, that is.
Thanks for posting. Just a couple questions...
First, does this prevent finger oils from messing up the screen?
Next, wouldn't windex/alcohol remove the rainx then next time you cleaned your screen? It does on windshields... If so (and if it doesn't prevent finger grease marks), then I think you'd have to do this process over and over, each time you cleaned your screen.

Why are u using windex or alcohol? Just use a micro fiber cloth. No chemicals.
Uh, yeah, I wouldn't advise using Windex or alcohol on any screen. If a simple microfiber cloth won't clean it, add a drop of water for the tough stuff.
or just use tv cleaners
RainX application maintenance

Bimboy, yes it does help with the finger oils. I think it works by preventing the oils from settling into the glass micropores. You still get smugdes and fingerprints but they wipe off much, much easier.
As Finland 2 suggested, once applied, a microfiber cloth is all that is needed to maintain the new finish. I expect it to last quite a while, since on a windsheild even with wipers and rain, an application usually. Lasts up to a month.
A little spritz of Stoner Invisible Glass (for autos) on a microfiber cloth does a good job getting the NC glass as smooth as a Tab too. Fights fingerprints for a bit, and doesn't take any effort. A can should last you a lifetime.
Pledge furniture polish spray will also help (it's pretty popular for cleaning helmet visors and motorcycle windscreens) and will also keep the prints down on the plastic bezel area (and back). Once again, apply it to a cloth first, don't spray it directly on the NC.
O your can just get a nice Screen protector like the AntiGlare one B&N Sell..........
Makes my screen silky smooth and protects it from scratches.... Why would I want to waste time using rainx and a process that could hurt the screen?
Also Rubbing alcohol with Microfiber Cloth Works Great to clean the screen, gets ride of all the oil and grim. Do not use anything but a Microfiber Cloth(As it could scratch the screen), Also Pure alcohol wont hurt the screen, its Ammonium based products and harsher Chemicals like that you need to watch out for. Alcohol is a prove safe method for cleaning Plastics even Internal Computer parts wont be hurt by Rubbing Alcohol.
I use to by screen protectors for all phones back when they had the plastic resistive screens. So far I have yet to scratch any of my glass capacitive ones. I did buy a used ipad from someone that managed to scratch the glass, it can barely be seen but it is there. So I'm on the fence about a screen protector for the nook. I probably won't get one for the nook but if i buy a $500+ tablet you can bet I will put one on.
I don't like the drag created when using a Zagg (invisible sheild) soft films but I don't mind the harder plastic ones that you occasionally have to replace.

I'm kinda in your camp, I've never found a screen protector that I wanted to use. They may be out there, but the trade offs, for me at least, seem to out weight the advantages in day to day use. Since I use a cover for my NC, I don't have to worry about objects in my pocket, keys and such, gouging my screen.
I know the RainX thing isn't for every one, and there may be easier ways to achieve the smooth surface effect, but I have found it to have worked very well. Before treating the screen, it would take a lot more microfiber polishing to remove finger oils or smudges, but now they come off very easily.
I've been using 'Gel Gloss No-Streek' for years on all kinds of glass stuff. It really is the best that I've found and it is pretty cheap. I used it on my nC and it is 'silky smooth' and resists fingerprints extremely well. One word of note though is that the polish does contain 'petroleum distillates and ammonia' so you have to be careful handling it and it stinks. Also, like most good quality polish you want to apply it to a cloth first, then to the nC, don't apply directly to the nC.
Here is a link to the stuff I bought.

I feel ya. I think you would be presently surprised with the Nook AntiGlare Matte filter available at Barnes and Noble. It's $15 and really does make the screen feel smooth, while at the same time resisting finger prints and smudges really well. A night and day improvement over the oddly tacky feel of the nook color screen. They give you two of them. Oh, and it's the "hard" type of plastic, not the flimsy cheap stuff.
RainX is not going to keep your screen from getting scratched. It also will probably increase and not reduce glare.
Gel gloss, isnt that for fiber glass?

Wrapsol Ultra: Dry v. Wet Application

Hey,
I just got got a Nexus S (upgrade from Nexus One w00t! ) and I'm really interested in getting a skin for it. I'm looking specifically at buying a Wrapsol one since I've read that it doesn't have the orange peel effect. I'm just confused over the "ultra protective film" (UPF) and the "original scratch protection" (OSP) that they're selling. I know that the UPF is a dry application and is $30 while the OSP is $25. I've put on many screen protectors in my life before but this is gonna be my first entry into the world of skins. What's the main difference between a dry and wet application protector? What is the better choice? Thanks for your help!
The only difference between wet and dry applicator is pretty much just the method of putting it on. Some people are not comfortable with spraying liquid on their phone so dry applications may appeal to them. The problem I see with this is that unless you are super pro like the guy in the video, you're going to have a frustrating time applying a dry protection on a curvy device like the nexus s. You pretty much have one shot at aligning everything. With a wet application, you can moisten the adhesive and actually slide the film around to align the curves perfectly and slowly work your way through.
I'm not sure about the difference in texture. I've seen some degree of orange peel in all wet applications with zagg being the worst. I'm not sure if wrapsol is orange peel free either due to the nature of the scratch resistant material used to make these film. I believe they use polyurethane.

I purchased a wrapsol protector for my s and honestly I regretted it the second I put it on. They said it stretches to fit the entire screen but it didn't and it doesn't have a hole for the front facing camera so images are blurry. I'm glad they have a 30 day money back return period cause this is going back as soon as my sgp protector comes.

Thanks for the insightful response! One of the things that has scared me away from things like Zagg and other wet application skins is the fact that after a couple of days, weeks, or months, the skin starts to peel off off the corners. Is that still a problem with skins today? (I saw the peeling off the corners a couple of years ago from my friends' blackberries.) Or is that more of the user's fault? I heard that you should ceram-wrap the devise completely also while it's drying so that everything sticks. Is that true? Is there an effective way of applying the skin so that they don't peel off by themselves off corners over time?

Thanks for letting me know about the screen protector! I'm already planning on using a Clarivue screen protector. I'm more curious about the back and side protection itself. How were they? Did they have the orange peel effect? How did they feel like? Did you use the wet or dry one? How easy was it to apply? Lastly, did the skin ever start peeling off by itself?
Again, thanks for all of y'all's responses!
I personally use ghost armor and haven't experienced any peeling over a month now. The installation is crucial and patience is key. I wouldn't go so far as to ceram wrap the device. Just make sure you press on all edges and curves for 15 seconds or so once it begins to adhere to make sure it sticks permanently. Another tip is to lightly heat those areas with a hair dryer. It is very important that you keep your hands free, work in a lint free area, and let it dry for 24 hours. Don't put in your pocket for a day or two. The reason is because if dust accumulates on any part of the edge, it will lose adhesive there and make it prone to lifting or peeling. If you can get past the drying stage, then you shouldn't experience any peeling unless forced.

Thanks! I'll definitely do what you suggested!
Well, I ended up ordering the Wrapsol wet application one. I'm just going to be using the back and side protection. I hope this goes well....
I've done both on 2 nexus S I own, I bought wrapsol because I could apply it dry.
However, after my experience with the 1st "dry" application I applied the second on "wet" why? because the end result is much smoother and less detectable.
btw if you are wondering why I need 2 Nexus S'es, one for me and one for the wife.

Cool, thanks for letting me know! I heard that the wet one is a matte finish. Is that true? Also, what did you think of the screen protector portion of the wet skin?
I actually wet the ultra protective film version, its glossy not matte. Its very thick compared to the Zagg Ive used in the past, someone said it was made of polyurethane.
so far so good I like the way it looks on the screen portion with a lot less orange peel than the Zagg.

Screen protector scratched by... included applicator card and microfiber cloth?

So I picked up a screen protector on Amazon by ArmorSuit... it seemed to have solid reviews and I heard reports of great customer service, so I spent the 20 bones to pick one up. I just now applied it, and it went on well without a hitch. Since it was a wet protector and majority of my screen protector experience was with dry ones, I watched the YouTube video and also thoroughly read the instructions. Last thing I wanted to do was install a wet protector incorrectly and mess up my device.
Once done I checked out the finish. Despite the fact it's been 20 minutes and not 12-24 hours like they say to let it sit, I noticed lots of tiny scratches on it, which definitely looked like it was from the applicator card. What baffles me more is I have a microfiber cloth that came with the kit that I was wiping the screen off with... I noticed even swirly scratches after I was done, yet this microfiber cloth has nothing in it whatsoever!
Er, uh. Has anybody ran into anything like this with screen protector application?
Despite this, I'm still relatively happy with the screen protector as it fits perfectly and was very quick and easy to install. That being said, I'm still a little disappointed in what I'm seeing here, but I'd still trade hairline scratches that aren't that visibleat all (and not visible whatsoever with the screen lit up) versus air bubbles and dust pockets which clearly are visible regardless... which is almost always the case with dry protectors... Don't get me wrong, it's not like it's a series of key-gouging lines here, but when video installation guide shows the tilted tablet glaring off of the ceiling light to show it is 100% smooth and flush with a perfect glass-like surface, that's where I can see these very fine marks.
Maybe, just maybe, this is some sort of epic self-healing screen protector that'll remove those blemishes over the next day as it sits. Yes, just maybe.
EDIT, er... uh... under the bulleted list of features I found these two items that I may have overlooked when I first purchased it:
Self-healing technology , Military grade material engineered for your specific device
ArmorSuit Lifetime Replacement Warranty *Made in the USA*
lol????
My ArmorSuit came with a nice horizontal scratch in it and these visible shallow 'gouges'. I'm guessing from the installation card. I'm getting rid of it as it just doesn't look clean. Looks like a thin slab of rubber and not perfectly flat like the glass. YMMV though as I know I didn't install it Grade A, but still, I can't imagine that this screen protector can look or feel like glass.
Part of me like the feel of these wet protectors, but it does feel unnatural and sort of tiring to use. I opted for the 3-pack of CrazyOnDigital (clear) protectors. I figure I will mess up 1, get 1 right, and keep 1 for next year.
For installing via wet method (sounds dirty no? lol) you have to get almost everything but the device "wet". That includes your fingers and the screen protector (both sides) itself and also the squeegee or card or whatever you call it...
I have seen what is called 'burn' marks if not properly wet. Sucks I know! But The wet products in my experience are always great when finally dry. I have the XO skin and it's about totally dry. Looks great IMO.
"burn marks" sounds about right

I'm not sure how much more wet you can get a screen protector when it's already dripping, which was the status of it when I placed it on the screen. Likewise, I did wash my hands just prior and also had my hands both completely saturated in the provided fluid.
Burn marks sounds like some food for thought, but I'm unsure how you can get a burn mark from a microfiber cloth when I'm wiping the screen off in a circular motion. I mean, I didn't attach it to a circular sander or anything...
So in the event this magical self healing thing doesn't live up, what other screen protector would you guys recommend? I definitely want to go with a wet application, as I'm already able to tell a world of difference, but I'm a little dissatisfied with how incredibly sensitive this protector is to scratches. It's great you can take a dremel to it and it still protects the actual tablet screen but when a microfiber cloth scratches it I can't say it impresses me.
EDIT - Just got an email response from them minutes ago. The bulk of the message is pasted below:
Regarding the marks on your screen protector:
Any filmy marks, air bubbles, swirl marks or haze underneath the screen protector is due to the solution, which can take up to 2 weeks to go away. It typically doesn't take this long, but it will eventually go away because the material is designed to be breathable. This will release any trapped solution.
Regarding the scratches on your screen, here is a quick and easy fix.
1. Please turn off your device.
2. With your screen protector still on your device, spray 1 pump on the screen protector and then spread the solution evenly with the included microfiber cloth.
3. The scratches should then disappear soon, within a few days at the very most because the material is self-healing.

I guess I'll have to be a little more patient and see what happens.
Not sure why they don't just put this in the instructions, but here's a trick:
When you're pushing the bubbles out, put the piece of plastic that you peeled the protector off of over the screen. Don't ever use the squeegee directly on the screen.

I thought the same thing, but once I realized that the microfiber cloth was giving swirl marks, that whole premise behind that idea kind of crumbled. If a microfiber cloth will legitimently give this screen protector swirl scratches from wiping it clean, then that's pretty fail.
That being said, I'm remaining quite optimistic about this "self healing" thing. Maybe I will see them slowly disappear? Who knows. It is a little more comforting knowing they have a lifetime guarantee, but we'll tackle that conversation when/if it ever becomes necessary. At any rate, I keep reminding myself - at least the screen protector still looks 1000% better than any dry screen protector AND it's protecting the screen in the process. :good:

I ordered the exact same 3-pack and I have to say they're great. Got it perfect on the first try and it looks crystal clear. It looks a lot better than those $10-$20 dollar protectors out there.

Does anyone else obsess over tiny imperfections?

When it comes to expensive new technology I tend to obsess over the tiniest imperfection. The miniscule hairline scratch on an otherwise flawless screen. That single piece of dust that always manages to get under your screen protector despite using a hazmat clean room to install it. That little nick on the metal edge. All of this drives me nuts. Once it's there my shiny new tablet is no longer pristine and perfect. It's like the first ding on your new BMW. After that it just isn't the same.
Well today I traded my new white 10.5 book cover, which was flawless except that I decided I didn't like white for a case, for a new titanium cover. Now I'm one of these guys that can choose from 10 cases and I'll ALWAYS pick the one with the defect. I never fails. Anyway loving the case, get it home and put it on. Only then do I notice that there is the equivalent of a screen protector dust particle trapped under the skin on the front. One tiny little raised dot in the middle of an otherwise perfect case. Sigh, and now I must obsess. I will endure it for a day or two then finally return it for a PERFECT one. I know me. Probably why BestBuy has wanted posters of me on their front door .
Why do I even care? Anyone else like this?

My poster at BB is for always looking out for returns so I can get something I want cheaper. They are ready to crown me "king". So long as what was returned is in more than acceptable shape and does not deter from the product's use, why not.
BTW, which BB are you returning it to?

All they had was a white one at my store. Youre lucky they had the other colors.
LOL I am not even going to look for imperfections in mine now. I'm afraid I would obsess over it too.

haha this level of obsession reminds me of my x-men comic collection back in high school and it was costly for someone who has to keep within his allowance
I spent a good hour applying my screen protector. I cannot accept any dust, bubbles, etc. I think the prep time takes longer that the actual preparation. I turn the shower on full hot and steam up the bathroom. After its good and foggy in there I turn the water off and close the door. The steam seems to take the dust out of the air. After about 15 minutes, I will go in and carefully apply the protector. There is good lighting in there so I can see anything that gets trapped under the protector. Works pretty well for me as I no longer go through several protectors trying to get it just right. I do obsess over the smallest imperfection. Call it OCD, being anal, or whatever. I just can't enjoy something as well if I know there's a flaw. Having said that, I absolutely happy with my titanium Tab S 10.5 and book cover so far. :fingers-crossed:

Best way to apply a screen protector to a large device is by placing the protector on the screen in the proper position then apply a strip of masking tape to the left edge attaching it to the tablet. Then once all dust is cleared, lift the protector up and peel away the backing as you let the hinge hold it steady. Watch for any little dust particle as you slowly apply the protector and use another piece of tape to remove them. Once applied just remove the tape hinge. Perfect placement, no dust .

Does Zagg still make a wet application protector?

I have always used invisible shield on my devices. One reason was the wet application method their protectors use. I always have issues with dust, no matter what I do, but the application solution seems to rinse the dust out with it when you install the wrap. With a dry install if a single piece of dust lands on the screen on the install you're screwed.
Anyway, does anyone know if any of the Zagg (or other brand) protectors use a wet install?

Because I'm probably taking a dump.
Ghost armor does. Not sure why you would want one though.. way too much friction for something with a stylus.

Would you say I'm ok without a screen protector then? I'm not one to throw my phone in my pocket with my keys or anything. I keep it in a pocket by itself. I would like one of the glass protectors but I've seen way too many bad things about them due to the screen being curved and causing a "halo" effect.
The "original" on their website I think. But that would be badddd with the pen.

I remember the original being pretty sticky feeling on my old iPhone. I just bought an HDX Defense, but it is a dry install as I referenced above. Its pretty clear and almost as smooth as glass, but I couldn't get it on without any dust. I ALMOST did but one big piece hit the screen just as I was laying it down, and I ruined the protector getting the dust off. I'll be sending in for replacement to try again but I just don't see how I could ever get one of these on without a single piece of dust. When I clean off my phone and watch if for about 5 seconds I get 10-15 little dust particle in that amount of time..... Ugh.

I do mine right in the bathroom after a shower. The steam helps keep the dust manageable. Also, use the tape hinge method so you can do it really fast after it's clean.
What is this tape hinge method? Also, I ran a ton of hot water in the bathroom to get the steam really going. It helped but I still got one piece of dust in there. =[ Probably took me about 15 seconds to apply, if I could do it in 3-4 seconds I could probably avoid all the dust.
I got the skinomi skin for my screen and its great. fits perfectly and no dust particles. it is not as smooth as glass or the plasticy screen protector, but I can do everything fine. prefer this over halos and dust around the halos.

It's popular for sticking decals on cars n such. Once you place the protector where you want it, make a hinge out of a piece of tape. Fold back the protector, peel off the backing, and use the hinge to put the protector back on in the same place it was taped. Here's a video.
I wouldn't mind having one for the glass back. It would add some nice grip.

tbh if you just don't abuse the phone you should be fine without a protector. After reading an article about it back when I had a Galaxy S3, I peeled my Zagg protector off and didn't even use one on the Note 3. After 2 years of heavy daily use, the Note 3 looked nearly brand new - only a few extremely light small scratches viewable from certain angles with just the right lighting. I will definitely not be using anything on the Note 5 for that reason.
I have a desk job though, and am generally careful with everything i own, however. My step brother on the other hand... he delivers/installs large home appliances. In the last 3 years he utterly destroyed 2 Galaxy S4's and an iPhone 5 because he doesn't take care of his stuff at all (both S4's had smashed screens, camera lenses etc destroyed through a full Otterbox Defender case).
In any case - I too would strongly advise against a Zagg wet protector on a phone with a stylus. It would basically make the stylus unusable.
If i recall correctly, the reason they discontinued the wet application was people were applying it improperly and causing damage to their phones.
Basically they stopped selling them to cover their butts from lawsuits.
