I think 1.85 was rootable via the flashrec method. Check out the One Click Root thread found in the Development section.

I would like to root my Sprint HTC Hero, but I don't know how.
Can anyone help explaining how to do it please?
I'm using 2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.29
Build number: 2.32.651.2
Software number: 2.32.651.2
Did you even try the following:
Something called "Search"
XDA HTC Hero Wiki (CDMA)
Maybe, you could and if you don't find something... then ask the question.
just find the universal androot.apk and go ahead....you can use rom manager after that to flash recovery(clockwork works fine for me)...do a nand back up and you are ready to go...
Can't use universal androot for that build. Search z4root in the market. Confirmed ...works on our hero's.
Easy Andy....

z4root or SuperOneClick should be able to root it for you.

Click to collapse
Are you actually saying it worked for you with bell vibrant on UGJL2 with 2.6.32.9 kernel?
SuperOneClick works on most phones and most versions... z4root doesn't work on new firmwares.
UGJL2 Z24 will not work , SuperOneClick works though.
z4root worked on my froyo
I got mine to work. Issue was with bloody win 7. Tried.it on XP and got rooted on the first try.
