[Q] What is the best Kernel for battery life vs Speed - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK i'm currently using Darkys v8 custom ROM which comes with Advanced voodoo kernel. And I haven't enabled any lag fixes. Was think of installing Speed Mode kernel. Just wanted know what is your experience between these two kernels.
1. Which kernel have more battery life without any lag fixes and tweaks ?
2. Which one of these is best to improve speed ?
Thanks.

i would not personley now i have stock frimware rooted a couple of times then accidentley semi bricked phone while applying the voodo lagfix now waiting for cyanogenmod stable for galaxy s but i think personley doc rom is the best

Thanks for the reply.. Question isn't about custom ROMs it's about kernels..

I'm using hardcores speed kernel 500Mhz which is quite fast and before I used voodoo which was also quite fast. Any you choose will be good as long is newer and stable version

I personally have use both Voodoo and Hardcores and i do see Voodoo draining battery life much faster,
Havnt tried the new voodoo though ,plan to do it tonight will let you know after.
Also voodoo plays traunt with the battery so i suggest flashing at 100% batter and wiping bat stats and then see the drain.

[Q] Firebird or speedmod kernel

Hello all,
I'm currently running perception 10 and I'm wondering if the included kernel (Firebird) offer better battery performance compare to speedmod (hardcore)
I tought that speedmod was offering better battery performance... but i seem to get better with firebird!
What's your opinion?

Speedmod would offer better battery becoz of all the battery tweaks in CWM recovery. And many ppl have found it to be better. But whatever Kernel you use, make sure to Recalibrate and wipe battery stats for the best battery life
Thanks man,
I wasn't sure if recalibrating was required after a Kernel Flash... But I was doubting about it, as my battery meter was acting weird today. (went from 75% to 47% in 1 hour... without using the phone lol!)
I've found that Speedmod gives me the best battery life out of any kernel I've flashed (after enabling the tweaks in CWM).
+1 for speedmod
+1 for speedmod
hello -
i'm considering flashing my captivate and i'm trying to learn as much as possible before doing so.
The one thing I'm confused about, do I update the kernel before I flash the ROM or afterwards? I would like to get the speedmod kernel, but just not sure which ROM to use just yet. Could someone enlighten me? Thanks.

When u flash a ROM it comes with a kernel too. So first load the ROM of ur choice, and then flash the kernel of ur choice.
1. ROM first
2. boot up the phone
3. Kernel next
4. boot up the phone
5. now do all ur stuff
Do NOT flash a new kernel without booting up ur phone atleast once after flashing any ROM.

Which kernel is better: speedmod or voodoo?

hey guys,
im using the voodoo kernel at the moment but i want to know whether the speedmod kernel is better.
what's the difference between those two ones? which is more reliable? which is the faster one?and which has a better battery life?
my second question is wheter a lagfix is still needed for the kernel. i heard the lagfix needs more battery.
ty in advice
Its a matter of personal preference.. You should try both kernels and conclude for yourselve..
but can you say something in general? there should be some differences...
ty
i'm using Stock JS3 with voodoo 5.2 and there is zero lag, and battery life is fantastic (after removing most of the samsung bloatware).
I really don't see any need for any of the extra 'fixes' the other kernals add
You can read the differences on both kernel's pages.
Which is better: apples or bananas? It's all based on opinion. Flash one, if you don't like it, flash the other.
I prefer voodoo,
At the moment im using the advanced kernel v666.2, and its bloody awesome.
Supercurio says voodoo doesnt increase battery life, so rock on!
Speedmod, whilst good as never been as smooth for me, even 500hz versions.

I think either kernal is good. Have used both and not much difference between the 2. My personal opinion- speedmod feels a little smoother than voodoo. Was using voodoo for a couple of months but now on speedmod.

One difference is voodoo is compiled by supercurio and the other by hardcore.

ty guys. i think i will stick to voodoo. actually i have the 5.2 version istalled on my gt-i9000.
but is there a thread in this forum where i can check for the latest voodoo kernel? i didn't find it...
5.2 is the latest version.. You should check project-voodoo.org for updates or folkow his voodoo sound thread
ty a lot. now i'm fine
Seems to me voodoo is bit smoother and speedmod has maybe better battery life.
You should get CWM Recovery and try for yourself since it's so easy to switch, I am on Darky's Ron and currently using Voodoo. But I was on Speedmod before 9.1 and I can't find any difference in their smoothness. The batterylife is more depending on your Rom and settings.
Happy flashing

I switched rom and kernel at the same time. So I can't fairly compare both kernels.
I appreciate Speedmod's kernel because it has tun support for Openvpn.
for me, I use speedmod as it has better battery life
I use SpeedMod, for the performance tweaks. I did briefly use supercurio's kernel, but then switched over to hardcore's, chiefly because of how it was geared at performance and efficiency, or so it said, anyway.
To the extent of my limited knowledge, I can summarise their technical advantages as follows:
Advantages of SpeedMod
Various optional performance boosts - promises battery and speed improvements, but I haven't actually done any tests for proof
Customisable lagfix - can choose from different file systems (ext2, ext3, ext4, ext4nj, rfs, jfs) and where to apply them (data, system, etc)
Advantages of Voodoo
Simplicity - lagfix (and other tweaks) automatically apply on boot, no need to ever go into recovery mode
Both have colour and sound tweaks (SpeedMod uses Voodoo Sound), and generally are very stable. You might also find less of a need to update

You don't say...
I guess voodoo is much better. I haveused both of them but speedmod has a lot of problem like screen brightness which will never be fixed! althou hardcore claims to have done so. about the battery consumption you can not say which of them is better cuz it depends on your rom. on Darky voodoo saves more and speedmod drains ur battery. that is why Darky switched to voodoo in his latest roms and if you install darky rom configurator you will see that voodoo is recommended.
I prefer the speedmod kernel because you have the choice in regards to optimizations and lagfixes. The latest kernel (k12u) really speeds up my gps fixes!!!
Stock XXPY + JPA WiFi driver, rooted, speedmod k12u 500hz
Speemod kernels are being updated almost daily,so the easiest way is to get used to using cwm recovery!

The most Stable +Best battery rom?

Hello xda,
I've been off for like 2-3 months so I dont know much about "new" roms.
My current rom is 2.3.3 Darky's 10.1.
So what rom is really stable + has good battery?
What do you people recommend?
Thanks!
for me stock deodexed JVS 2.3.5 rom + darkcore 4.0 kernel.... normal usage 1day8hrs....
I like CM7 best but your mileage may vary concerning battery.
Thanks guys.
I'll try to find a good one

Darkey's 10.1 is still their last one (to my knowledge) and a very fast and stable ROM, but these are pretty good too. "F1 SGS II" and "F1 InnovatioN" and "SYMPLY".
one of the best rom on jvs right now is jetpack rom v5 'spark' ot has amazing battery life ! while i havent flashed it yet and i am still on v4 because i dont have a pc or a lappy these days! but the users feedback suggest that its super stable and has mind blowing battery life! v4 has amazing battery life too and as jvs has better battery life ao v5 has superb itself!

The darky crew has since released 10.2(EE & RE) 10.2.1 10.2.2 10.3Beta and a JVS Base ROM. From my standpoint I found 10.2RE and the JVS base to be much more stable, snappier and have better battery than 10.1 and others have claimed the same about 10.2.x in regards to 10.2
Now finding stock JVS With semaphore to have even greater stability.
Sent from my A501 using XDA App
for me simplicity 0.4 with semaphore 1.6.. i get around 1d2hrs with moderate use
You must consider lastest stock XXJVS, it's stabe and has a very good battery life.
But for me I'd stick with lastest CM7.
Best looking ROM: MIUI
Most unstable and worst battery Life: MIUI
In my opinion.
Now im searching for something stable + good battery life.
Testing Darky 12.2.2 atm but idk which kernel i should use

Latest CM7 nightly have pretty life battery, maybe better than stock samsung Roms. You can heard about it that CM7 was fastest rom for galaxy s.

best kernel for cm7 stable?

hi just wondering if any one prefered a kernel to use with cm7 and if so which one am looking for a kernel good on battary life nad performance thanks
I've been running 2.6.38.7-CFS-redstar+ for a while now and easily get a day and a half out of a full charge.
Get it via Kernel Manager and I think it's the one with the most downloads. Runs great.
Until recently* I was using IR's kernel using Smartass v2 governor. Stable and good battery life.
*HTC repair has left me stuck on stock gingerbread 2.3 4

Stock or Tiamat w/Incredicontrol. I get about 1%/hr drain at idle with both.

[Q] What Kernel are you using with what Rom and why?

As the title suggests I would like to know what kernel people are using with what Rom and why.
Do you use the same Kernel with every Rom you flash?

Well im on stock 2.2.1 froyo with CF-ROOT kernel. got this phone as present lats week. haven`t flash it yet xD but ,as anyone here, i just love flashing
I am using cm9 nightlies - based on 4.0.4 because of its stability, good battery life and performance, settings + twics - tw launcher, weather widget and some other things from sgs3, atm with devil3 .79 kernel, with stock ram (378mb, if needed, i can increase it up to 403mb), stable oc up to 1400mhz (with semaphore 1140max., 1200 -> bootloop), also gpu is oc-able ... but if u dont want to oc, semaphore kernel is better for u
I'm reinstalling right now the miui speed ics by lucainno, with devil3 kernel. I really love this rom expecially for the layout, which is different from any other rom! The speed is great and battery life as well. And the kernel is simply... awesome! For its customization
Hi, I'm using ics 4.0.4 cna by franzy with the midnight kernel. I had the devil before but i got a bootloop. With the last midnight the phone is smooth, no lags, good battery life, no bugs until now !
Saurom jw5 + semaphore + ext4 works for me.. very smooth ops. Sticking to 2.3.6 for the fm radio
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
I'm running the CM9 nightlies as well, with a Semaphore kernel. Very stable and good batteri life, although I'm thinking about comparing with a devil3 kernel. Right now, with the battery life I'm having the most important thing for me is the stability, though.
