A few months ago I heard about a company called CornerStone that was demoing TRUE multitasking on Android. It was pretty awesome. It allowed you to run up to 3 apps simultaneously on the screen and you could easily interact with each of them. Check out the video below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX8w3UZIjkc
Just when I thought this project was dead, they dropped a big bomb. Now OnSkreen (which was suppose to be reserved for big manufacturers to use) is now OPEN SOURCE! That means devs can bake this into their ROM and we, the users, can enjoy awesome multitasking capabilities! This is gonna be awesome! Can't wait to see where this goes.

props to dgcruzing for the news.
Android already have true multitasking... this app just gives you an interface to better control it.
Maybe they should actually market it for what it really is instead of talking utter crap by claiming to add something that already exists.

Hum... You can't have different applications opened in windowed mode in Android, even on a tablet running Ics.. I know that I've got one...
This isn't an app that can be written in java, it's a modification of OS to be able to handle multiple applications on the same screen...
Android is multitask, you're right, but not as a computer can be.
Can't see the real benefit on little phone screen, and above all only developed for Android 4.0.x.
So I think it's a good news, but for tablet stuff..
And no need to be so virulent against the poor guy...

EDIT: A small update. I recently built a pc and I therefore have my laptop collecting dust. I was thinking I'd install Linux on it, but which distro could you recommend me?
Dualboot.

If you don't mind your personal information being used for God knows what, constant crashes, slow performance, viruses , malware, having no rights and basically being a slave to Microsoft, then go ahead and use Windows, you deserve it.
Otherwise, use Linux

Since I don't play anymore on this laptop (I have a PS3 for gaming), do you think I should install Linux or stay with W7? Is there a good Linux alternative to MS Word? (maybe Libre Office?) I'm using MS Word 2007 for a project work and would therefore like a good replacement.
My laptop is kinda slow, which means it would be more than adequate for Linux ^^

when i was ten
When I was ten, I switched to Ubuntu 6, or 8 or something. I didn't understand how to use it and didn't install. This left me to believe that Linux sucked. I got a Mac at 13 cuz I was sick of bugs/ugliness etc on windows. Did not regret that. But then my friend said he had Linux on his PC and that it was solid. I gave it a try (now nearly 15 and able to use computers much better) and I loved it.
IMO Linux is able to do everything, yes everything better than windows or mac , combined . I suggest Ubuntu 12.10 (what I have ATM) as it is very use friendly. If your laptop is quite slow and you find it is too bad on Ubuntu, you can install different desktop environments like XCFE or LDE using the Debian based 'apt-get'
Seriously, I see no reason for windows, especially since steam is now under ha heavy make over to become Linux compatible.
Definitely download a distro and try it and see if you like it or not. You can always duel boot or not installed it at all
Edit: I also think fedora is good (especially if you dislike unity) and I have heard that Linux mint is nice (not used myself much).
Debian is IMO not so good compared to Ubuntu as it is like choosing between a plain pizza, or a pizza with ham, cheese, pineapple and a side order and drink. I'm hungry now :'(
So yeah... if you (or anyone else) want help, post here or pm me if u dont get a response.
I only installed Linux this year so know what being a n00b is like

Just can't use phone OEM utilities.

Dual-boot is the way to go. I use Ubuntu/Android on my netbook, OpenSuSE/WinXP on my big laptop, and Ubuntu/W7 on my desktop. Flexibility is a wonderful thing.
Backup important stuff, format your HDD, via win7 install.
Or, format, then install linux.
OR, format, install Win7, then install windows 8
@OP
Basically it boils down to what you use your computer for. If you only browse the web, do some word/excel work and play media, then you should definately try out a Linux distro. The popular ones come with all the neccessary stuff pre-installed and their usability out of the box is great.
However, if you're into photo/video/music editing and gaming, then you're probably better off staying with Windows, as the alternatives for e.g. Photoshop or After Effects are horrible and getting these apps to run on Linux is a nightmare.. much easier to just stick with Windows or, as some have suggested, dual boot.
Some other observations I've made from running Linux for a few years:
- Linux's security is much tighter and there's virtually no viruses/malware
- the need for maintanance is almost non-exsistant compared to Windows - no need for defragmenting, ram cleaners, registry cleaners etc..
- Linux usually runs better on older hardware than brand new stuff.. some new cool features can take time to implement
- you'll almost always have problems with certain hardware.. either the scrolling on the trackpad won't work, or your bluetooth dongle will be messed up, or the special keys on your keyboard won't be working.. there's always something that just won't work
With all that said, I personally don't use Linux anymore because I just don't have the wanted level of freedom while using it. Every day I want an application that does something specific, and while I can just download and run it under windows in 2 minutes, I have to jump through hoops to get the same thing done on Linux. I've learned how to keep my Windows optimized and safe, I just take it as normal and I enjoy "taking care" of it. Some people don't have time for messing about and want stuff to work out of the box. This is why I've installed Linux Mint on my mom's laptop 3 years ago and she absolutely loves it.
Dual boot. If you don't like linux, or you need your computer NOW and you don't have time to figure it out, then you could be stuck...
Speaking from experience, with a computer that currently has no bootable OS, messed up partitions, and a very crappy external hard drive that's making copying out my folders more difficult that it should.
If only I paid the same amount of attention to my computer as do my phone...
Edit: bootable as in installed, I'm running off Linux Mint v13 usb right now

If you've never used linux before - you actually shouldn't replace W7.
And if you're really interested in discovering linux, you should first ask yourself some questions:
1. Can you do backups for your W7? (if you don't have any important files on your laptop - skip this)
2. Can you manage your disk partitions? (with gparted or acronis disk director, for instance)
3. Are you sure you can manage linux installation? (if you're going to install some human-distro like ubuntu or fedora - don't bother about it)
4. You can face some drivers problems after linux installation. Do you really want it?
5. Are you sure you can restore W7 after all?
If your answer for any of this questions is "no" - you shouldn't install linux. Yet.
Wipe HDD and install Linux Mint. There is no reason to keep W7 if you have PS3 for gaming...

Dual boot if you aren't fully comfortable with scrapping windows (yet)
Are there any minimum requirements for dual boot using wubi? I had done it once on another computer and it caused "green stripes". Had to format it and reinstall windows.

I, for one am very excited for this release! I'm just not sure which device I am going to try this out on first. I came across your post because I just got done rooting/flashing my son's NC. I also have a rooted Kindle Fire. Both of these devices would struggle with Ubuntu, but I may talk my other son into letting me try it on his phone. He has ICS on his LG G2X. My phone is the GS3 that I am not ready to begin playing with yet... Hmmm any ideas? My wife's brand new N7?
I really wish my phone had an unlocked bootloader so i could test it out...i am sorely tempted to buy a Gnex just to have an Ubuntu Phone

I tried talking her into letting me check out the preview on her N7. Once she saw it was not a full build, it was a pretty hilarious conversation. The end result is her device isn't getting messed with until a complete build is available. I even explained to her that I would put her Android build right back on it. Lol! That's okay, I showed her the videos of the phone OS and she likes it. I even have her slowly converting from Windows and tinkering with Ubuntu 12.10 on the laptop. Either way, by the end of 2013, I am certain I will be doing 99% of my computing from a phone that's docked when I want a desktop environment. I truly am excited for Ubuntu and hope the phone OS takes off!
I have always been a Windows user, however I recently ordered 2 Samsung 840 Pro SSDs, which i was going to use for a Raid 0 setup with windows 8. However when UPS came to drop them off, I go to get them from my front door, and come to find my windows pc on a BSOD.. Annoyed i decide I want to use one of these SSD's to install Ubuntu or some other distro (decide on ubuntu) and install it on a SSD, and use as my main OS.
Keep in mine I have used Ubuntu before and tried out other distros but never as my main OS. Usually in virtual box or maybe a dual boot that ends up getting deleted later. But this time I wanted it to be different, I was going to set it up how i wanted it and keep and use it as my main OS.
So yesterday I did this, I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on this new SSD. When it is done, I restart and am amazed on how quickly it boots. I know this is mostly because of the SSD, but it just completely skipped the ubuntu dot loading/boot screen. Motherboard post, ubuntu purple real quick, flash and bam its on login screen. 15 seconds from the push of power button.
Anyways once im in ubuntu, first thing i do is check for any updates, install those. Then I reboot. Now this next part is the part I am worried about. Installing the AMD propriety drivers. This task in the past has never gone well with me. Drivers seem to install, but reboot to non booting ubuntu. Or super slow choppy ubuntu. Meanwhile thanks to http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu I finally successfully installed AMD drivers (13.1 catalyst to be exact) now extremely happy me goes to install steam for linux . Install it, login, and first thing i do is download/install team fortress 2. Once that installs I click play, and bam it opens and plays. You dont know how happy i was to see this considering I have tried about a month ago to install ubuntu in dualboot to test steam. And never could get the drivers right or load tf2. I now go to install all my other linux compatible steam games, my humble bundle games etc.
Anyways this is getting too long for you guys to read lol . For the next couple hours I installed all the programs i wanted (chrome etc) then I wanted to customize some things. I didn't like unity much, but since this is ubuntu all that can be changed.
I ended up installing:
Cinnamon 1.6 desktop environment
Elementary Luna Mod Cinnamon theme
Plank + ElementaryOS-plank theme
Pantheon-terminal (from elementaryOS , not really needed but like the look of it lol)
Elementaryish theme for GTK+ and window theme (as you can see I like eOS look)
Elementary-icon theme
For a end result of this
Screenshot: http://i1.minus.com/ibcjIiidyTMpHL.png
Conclusion: I really love my setup now and will difinaly be using it as my main OS. However the little gamer inside me needs windows installed somewhere, so ill be using a 2ND SSD for windows (along with a 1TB hdd) pretty much 100% for games. May even set it up to boot right to steam big picture mode if thats possible lol. But valves attitude towards linux, and the humble bundles are both very positive things!

Hi,
First post, so first of all- great community here. I like the welcome video, and attitude of figuring it out yourself (forcing you to learn a lot very fast).
I rooted my Nexus 7 very easily, thanks to the info here. I've got MultiRom running and I tired installing Ubuntu 13.04. I installed the KerneeI, and Ubuntu, but then the OS itself wouldn't load. I'm not ready to post for help with it yet- but searching hasn't given me any solutions yet.
Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone else would be interested in an eReader ROM. I haven't thought it through a lot- but for me, I think it would encourage me to read more instead of getting notifications and being distracted, or being tempted to do other things. It could be optimized to lengthen the battery, such as through under-clocking the CPU or other hardware...
Anyone else think it could be a good idea? Does something similar exist?
Cheers
Hmm. If I wanted an ereader, I would buy a kindle or something else.
I can read ebooks with my nexus and do a lot of other things with it. Why should I limit it artificially?
They already make eReaders. Why would you want to cripple such a power full device into a eReader?

waste of time honestly since there's only you that's ever requested a rom like this here on these forums and because every rom available for the n7 already has the capabilities you're requesting. i suggest Slim Bean being's it's only 80mb and super lightweight, and it comes with Slim Sizer (i believe that's the name) which allows you to remove any system application that came pre-installed on the rom.
Tbh it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Suppose you gave it to a kid or teen or whatever that mostly reads and doesn't know crap about technology. Kinda like porting the kindles software over. Doubt anyone really cares too much to work on it though.

if i wanted to give a kid who knows nothing about technology an ereader, i certainly wouldn't give them a developer's device, let alone one that costs over $200. that's what a nabi2 tablet is for. hell, a nook simple touch is only $100. half the price of a nexus 7, easy to use, and does everything OP is asking for. an ereader rom for a developer device is honestly quite wasteful.
If you're being distracted by notifications couldn't you just turn Airplane mode on?
Or, as others have said, you could just install Slimbean and add nothing but a couple reading apps. And then remove EVERY other app on that ROM. Then you pretty much have what you want.

The only reason why an ereader is a stand alone device is its screen and therefore battery consumption. Yes, you can read books on n7 too, bit there's no point having a separate ROM for it, all you need is an app, or maybe a dedicated launcher. I can't picture a ROM that makes the battery last for a week and transform a LCD screen into eink one. It may be worth a shot with led displays, but not on LCD.

just because there are people that own the device and dont know what rooting is doesn't mean the device wasn't intended for developers. it was. all nexus devices are intended to be developed on.
