sound fix - Nook Color General

Im unable to return my nook due to it being a gift, and being outside of return period. My nook color is rooted and has all the goodies done, is there a fix for the standby sound issue? Its kinda annoying that i lose sound everytime it goes to standby

Just so you know, B&N is accepting returns untill Jan 31. Probably those purchased in December I would suppose.
Cheers,
kev
BTW I exchanged mine for that issue just in case there was not a forthcoming F/W fix. I noticed that after B&N did a factory reset on mine the problem was gone, until I rebooted it, so don't fall for that "fix".

Unfort t was bought at best buy in november

I had the same audio issue as you and mine was also a gift. I went into Barnes and noble, even without a reciept and they gave me a new one. Didn't even usevthr credit card to look up the purchase, it was great.
Too bad mang

There is an app that wont let the book go to sleep. You can still turn off the screen, but it wont go to sleep. Im sorry,i don't remember the name. It works well though.i used while i had a defective one like yours.

So far there has been no feedback from B&N on this issue. I have heard nothing about any investigation into what the root cause is, so there is no knowing if a F/W fix is indicated. There may have been a running hdwr change or a different F/W build that is the cause on a certain batch of units. Those here have not noted the SN of the failing units, so no way to know which to stay away from. I was hoping, that by now, B&N would have addressed this. That may indicate that it is not fixable with F/W. It certainly qualifies for a warranty replacement though. The longer you wait to return it, the better chance you will get a refurb in exchange. That's not necessarily bad, just mentioning it.
Cheers,
kv

i called tech support, and this is one fo the reasons i love barnes and noble.... they are going to exchange it in store for me. pretty amazing considering it was bought at a best buy! i will never own a kindle for this reason. they impressed me alot with being willing to do this to keep a customer happy!

Is the sound issue just on rooted nooks? Mine is doing the same but thought it was a price for having it rooted. Btw, don't forget to unroot before taking it in.

The app is called Softlocker and it doesn't really effect battery too much... it also gives instant wake.

Isn't really that big of surprise... Best Buy is a re-SELLER, and in this case, Barnes & Noble is the MANUFACTURER with a one year warranty. They cannot deny warranty claims at this point because all Nook Colors are less than one year old. It is good to hear that B & N seem to want to have a good reputation for honoring their warranty!

I have read several questions about this problem in this thread. This is pretty well discussed previously here & on other forums. If you need to research it, search should show some results.

[Q] Before I buy..

I am going to Barnes & Noble today to get the Nook Color. I want to buy it so I can root it and use it as a tablet/ereader. Are the newest version of the NC's rootable or do I need to buy an older version off eBay or something. Thanks in advance!
No, you're fine. The current firmware, 1.01, is rootable. It'll probably come with 1.0 anyway.
If you want a great value on a quality android tablet, I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Alright thanks man, I am actually buying this over the Galaxy Tab, lol. Hope it is as amazing as it sounds.
Buy two nooks, set them next to each other, and cross your eyes a lot. Now you hve a 3d tablet for $100 less than a galaxy tablet...

If you can live without GPS, cameras, 3G, etc., I see no reason to pay over twice as much for a Galaxy Tab. Mine has everything I would have wanted from a Galaxy Tab-- and this is without a custom ROM.

Yes, I bring my evo everywhere, so I can just easily tether to it, I don't need GPS or cameras because obviously the evo has them.

Yep - that's exactly what I do. Wireless Tether app (version pre-12 I think I'm using) works great.
While there's no GPS for navigation, it gets other location services from the network, so Google Maps and whatnot get my location to within 100 yards or so.
I’m using my DroidX to tether.
I don’t need camera and crap on the tablet.
I have NFS Shift running on mine flawlessly along with just about all the apps I’ve installed.
I think the new thread should be “what does not work”. Everything I’m using sems to work.

You may want to buy somewhere that has a better return policy, but thats really up to you.
When I was at B&N today just to look, two people walked in within 5 minutes with defective units...One had no WIFI, the other had screen issues.
They sent the guy with no Wifi home, telling him he must have typed in his password wrong...They would not exchange for him.. They never even looked at it.
They sent the lady home because she did not have her charger.
I JUST bought mine at Best Buy...First one had a dead dark pixel right smack in the middle of the screen, also had some dust and the flicker everyone mentions..
I exchanged it, however they really gave it the 3rd degree and looked like they did not want to exchange it..They pulled all the packaging apart, turned it on, went through all the menues, etc....
Second one is in good shape, but does have a stuck pixel that only is seen on a full black screen..I can live with that I guess.
Examine yours closely, because I have a feeling there is quality issues.
I would assume they are getting a large amount of returns now and are probably going through them thoroughly..
Alright thanks, I might consider buying from Best Buy then instead.
Just got mine Christmas Eve. I had looked long and hard at a Galaxy Tab. But at the price, I just couldn't pass up the Nook. With rooting, it is everything that I wanted in a pad. As mentioned before, coupled with my rooted HD2, it is an awesome duo.
And as a stand-alone, the Nook does everything I could want. It came with 1.0, but updating was simple. Auto-nootering was just as simple. AWESOMENESS!
Another possibility for the return scrutiny is that that B&N/Best Buy are now well aware of what many are doing with these, and are happy to sell more units--as long as it isn't causing them to lose money.
. . . And one way they could lose money is if people screw things up rooting and want a replacement or refund. Dead pixels have nothing to do with rooting, but the retail world could easily over-generalize as "don't take NookColor returns lightly."

A) Check the date on the article: Thursday, Feb 3, 2011. If this was true, you'd see plenty of threads discussing rooting post-Feb 3rd Nooks.
B) It clearly explains at the very top of the article that any anti-hacking measures were totally false:
Update: sources from Barnes & Noble have stated (unofficially) that this was merely due to a brief supply shortage of Nook Colors. It looks like this was most likely a false alarm and they'll keep happily selling you Nook Colors.

Thank goodness. I wasn't sure either; and I'm still fearful of the upcoming upgrade. It would stink if they disabled the SD boot.
I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that the ability to boot from SD first is a hardware setting, not a software option. No amount of B&N firmare/OS updates or changes can take that option away - it would require cracking open the machine and changing some hardware configuration. That was the basis for some of the rumors regarding the supply shortage some months agao - that they were pulling all of their floor stock to make this change and re-supply with non-SD-bootable devices. This obviously did not come to pass. So unless they start quietly producing machines with a new hardware configuration there is nothing to worry about.
Besides, if you just install one of the custom ROMs available then all of the updates become a non-issue. CM7 is coming along nicely - I was a firm backer of rooted stock 2.1 until the past week or so. Flashed CM7 and am quite happy with it so far.
Cheers
That's all totally untrue. Ibjust bought. NC two days ago and rooted it with AN 3.0. When i was talking to the girl who sold me it she asked if i had any questions or wanted to play around with it and i politely replied "no i just want to root it", to which she responded with "they've made some changes so that people might not be able to root these" and i just laughed and said yeah i have more faith inbthe android dev community than some dev who works at B&N.

Yea. Until they make the unit stop booting off the SDcard first the sky is the limit.
B&N has no reason to not want root. I bet they made the SD card boot first so that it was easy to root. Think about it this way...the more people that want to hack it, the more people that will buy it...if it was just a pure e-reader, I doubt they would have had the sales numbers they have. Also, it is most likely possible for them to send a OTA update and stop SD boot (as it is imprinted on the hardware, but can still be changed by software) but again, I doubt they'd ever want to do that.

I tend to agree with you on that. I and several I know would have never considered a Nook Color if it weren't easily rooted. I picked one up a new one last week and rooted it with AN 3 the minute I got home (so to the OP, there's another confirmation for you that they're still rootable).
I think B&N's intention is primarily to sell these cheaply to get you to buy digital books (which are seriously over-priced) ala the give away the razor and make money off the replacement blades model. It's working somewhat with me...I never would have bought an digital book or magazine from B&N, but I've got my eye on a few when I have a chance to actually read a book..

Well that is still helping B&N in two ways:
1 - What is called "economy of scale". It costs less per processor to buy 100,000 than to buy 10,000. So, if they break even on all the rooted Nooks, they save money on all the rest, or lower their selling price on all the rest, making more attractive to book readers.
2 - It raises the visibility of the Nook Color and B&N ereaders in general. Note that WSJ article about how rooting the NC gets you a bargain tablet. No doubt that that article also ended up selling some NC's to people who just want to read books bought from B&N.
The Nook rooting community is a big publicity machine for B&N, and e-books are still so new that any market share gained now is worth a lot in the future.
But the thing is, assuming they ARE at least breaking even on these "razors", then WHY has no one else been able to bring out a 7" capacitive tablet in anything like this price point?
I still feel (without any evidence) that they may be close to losing money on these and are really counting on the book sales, and that therefore future anti-rooting measures are still a possibility. Just fear and speculation on my part though...

They can bring it out, but don't, because unlike B&N, have no further revenue after the purchase. B&N can afford to be lower, because they know that even if not all of them buy books, a good majority will buy some, now and in the future. Other tablet makers are SOL; once their device is sold, they are out of it, unless they can get some good accessories, etc...
Yeah, I'm almost surprised they let you leave the store without registering the device, like when buying a cell phone. I think we even paid cash. It's great for the consumer though! (I guess it's kind of sad that today a store letting you buy something without strings and gotchas is a source of unexpected joy.)

That's mainly for the cellular aspect. You can actually buy a Xoom with cash and walk out without registering it. Might not be as easy as the Nook was (fastest I'd ever spent 250 bucks on a piece of electronics), but still possible.
Blocking Root is still possible, but not probable. Like one person said, they are making good money on their ebook sales AND the sales of the device so that's why the price point can be lower.

Likewise. Ironically enough, I don't really read books much anymore. But it was because I got the Nook Color to hack as a tablet, that I was curious about downloading a book from the Nook store. Both me and B&N are happy. They make the money they need to offset the price of the NC, and I get the tablet I wanted.

New Nook nicer screen!

I returned my Nook and got a new one and was amazed at how much better the screen is. Mine had a slight bleed at the bottom I wasn't sure if that was all of them or not.
Anyways aside from the bleed gone, the screen is much more vibrant and clear. Just an fyi if anyone has a weird screen don't settle!
Cool, mine has a dead pixel that appeared only 2 days after I purchased it - I've been debating whether or not it's worth the time to reflash back to stock, etc... etc... and exchange it. I think I will.
My first nook had white splotches on the screen. I took it back to the store and the guy wouldn't exchange it. As soon as I told him I wanted my money back he changed his mind and gave me another one. He was a ****.
Then, after a week, the nook started creaking and squeaking all around the bezel. I called to get it exchanged. They said I had to go into the store. I went into the store. They said I had to do it online or on the phone. I called on the phone and argued with some lady for 30 minutes after which she told me that if I sent my current nook back and they didn't think anything was wrong with it, they'd charge me $250. I hung up and called right back and got a woman who was ok and told me the other lady was an idiot. Thanks guys.
I received my third nook in the mail. The A/C charger jack was broken. I couldn't put the jack in. So i called to get this replaced and argued with some guys in India for an hour and finally got a replacement.
I'm on my 4th nook. Barnes and Noble sucks and I will never buy another electronic device from them again.
Yeah I was not impressed with their phone support either. All these companies not only outsourcing to India but only allowing the support person to use scripted conversation is even worse.
I called to deregister a device since I forgot to deregister before returning a NC and the lady was an idiot reading from a script she didn't even understand.
Roku is another horrible company for India scripted phone support.
Unfortunaley India gets beat up a lot by Americans for this when it might not be so bad if the scripts were taken away and they just hired smarter people.
I got mine at best buy, and getting it replaced for the phantom ghost tap issue was easy as pie. The new one works great. The girl at the counter was kinda cute too, so it was like win-win!

My wife and I both got a NC, same store, about a month apart. Both of ours work perfectly.
Don't assume because you had 2 problematic NC's doesn't mean everyone has, or that overall quality is bad. (Yes, I said 2.)
The only issue with my screen is some binding/pinching where the bezel meets the LCD which causes slight bright spots at the bottom edge. I've seen this same issue with lower quality LCD monitors. Otherwise pleased with screen quality. Having worked in electronics manufacturing, I came to learn how variable quality control can be with some manufacturers.
Best Buy has one month reuturns but after that your screwed unless u buy insurance. my 1st NC ate an 8 gig microUSB and started bleeding by the vol. B&N took sent another straight away with postage paid for the return. NO PROB and they do have a vibrant screen from all angles.
a case would keep your nook safe from most screen probs, and be shure to line up your mcards.

I did buy the insurance, but didn't have to use it even though it was something like 45 days or more after I bought it. I brought it in planning to use the insurance (which is a one time shot apparently), but she told me they could just do it as a warranty exchange since it was so new. I'm not really sure how long they extend it for, but I was happy.

Wow, yeah, my post was just soooo long.
If you read it, it said I had three bad nooks (Yes, I said 3). I never said everyone has bad ones. I said I won't buy from them again because their support sucks and their products are defective.
Maybe next time you comment on a post, read it first.
My first NC was defective. It had a bad accelerometer and/or a bad power button. Essentially, if you set it down occasionally it would act as if you pressed and held the power button and then tapped OK to shut down the tablet.
Here's a vid I took of it to convince the BN store staff I wasn't going nuts:
YOUTUBE DOT COM/watch?v=Zfit4oG4WaA
I'd bought the extended warranty but this happened within the first week of ownership. I talked to the manager of the store where I bought it and she swapped it for a new one and applied the warranty to NC #2. I'd heard the phone support was horrible, so made it a point to buy it locally. I'm glad I did.
I'm loving my new one. I'm going to Hawaii in a week and, for the first time in my life, will be travelling without a laptop. All I'm taking is my NC and a BT keyboard for it.
Are you sure you had a problem? Because khaytsus bought one for himself and his wife and didn't have any issues LOL
Wow, good thing the store owner was helpful. The guy on staff at my local BN refused to do anything and said all returns or exchanges definitely needed to go through the website.
I'm still not happy with my current Nook. The panel below the "N" button is depressed on both sides. But I'm sticking with it for now.
Backlight bleeding is pretty much the norm for any LCD screen. I've seen it on desktop monitors, TVs, laptops, tablets...etc. It will exist on even on the top of the line models and "best" brands.
If you just have only some slight backlight bleeding, I would discourage you from trying to exchange it. You're likely to get something worse like dead pixels.
I spent half an hour one the support line a second ago because my USB cable fried. The lady tried to have me enter my credit card number for some reason so I could buy "NOOKBooks". I argued with her for about 5 minutes and then she told me all I need to enter is my shipping address. She said that they would mail the replacement cable free of charge in 24 to 48 hours.
I didn't spend anytime on hold even though the automated message said that they are flooded with tech support calls.

Smarter people ask for a lot of money (if they are paying more money then whats the point of outsourcing) even in India only those who can't really find another job for themselves take up job's in call center's.
well I just returned my nook with a transformer incoming... i sure hope it has as good of a screen or ill prob end up another nook. lol

Won't power on AND this happens when it does

?? any idea and it just stays like that
Have you tried a hard reboot? What is the status of your NC? Rooted? Stock 1.2? CM7? Had you "done" or "loaded" anything just before? Is there a bootable uSD in the slot?
Bit more info would be spiffy here.
With so little to go on, it's hard to say what's happening; but it looks like a problem with the hardware to me. Particularly, the LCD panel seems to be on the fritz.
How old is the Nook? Had it been working fine for more than just a few days before this problem occurred? Any drops or spills in the recent past?
When was it purchased? Seems like the LCD panel is busted. If it's rooted or not, take it to the BN Store and have it replaced.
It was a trade and it was fine it for weeks and then one day started doing this, and now just hardly ever get it too turn on and it does that when it does.
i nor he never moded it in any way, hardware or software. it's stock
Oh and it does it with or without a SD card in it, i recently made the SD card into a clockwork one to try and fix it but no luck since it wont even come on hardly ever and sticks there and sometimes gets to the big U but never past there

Well, everything made by man breaks eventually an this one is definitely broken. If there is no sign of obvious trauma or water damage, you can probably get a warranty replacement.
I'd say it's time to take it to your local B&N store and get a new one. I imagine they would like to see the receipt, but I'm not sure.
If you can't get the receipt from your friend, you might have to try to sell it to the guy in this thread:

You could also try calling B&N Digital Support like the guy in the last post of that thread suggested.
Good Luck
I realize its the screen, even when I put in the SD with clockwork it goes haywire. Where on earth do you get a screen???

Is anyone else experiencing issue with their screen not rotating to landscape? I don't know if it's me or if there's an issue with the phone itself. I noticed last night my screen wasn't rotating during video playback on Youtube or when surfing the internet.

My thread HERE dealing with people edge not working was a result of a bad accelerometer. Same issues: calendar and apps not rotating. I downloaded a clinometer app and would only see the accelerometer track about 14 degrees off center and then stop as I rotated the phone.
I returned the phone this morning for a new one and all's well. 64 GB Whites are starting to sell out though. I had to drive to a BB about 30 minutes away to get a replacement.

I did the same and found out mine is doing the same thing.
Yeah, I went to Verizon yesterday and they were going to replace it and they didn't have any 64GB white edges. No one within 150 miles does. I have fourteen days to get a new one either by waiting for it to come to the store. I called VZW and they can't do it over the phone and guarantee me a new phone.
So, I will wait for a new one.
Got my replacement and everything is good to go...

I'm having the rotation issue too. I've read other places that is a software issue. Gunna have to get a replacement tomorrow.
Well after doing the run arounds with Verizon they're finally sending me a new phone. I called the local stores and there's not a single one within 60 miles that has the white 64GB Edge in stock. I was very hesitant doing it over the phone, but they said they didn't have any certified like new devices yet so that I would most likely get a new device. I did tell them though that I would send it right back if it wasn't a brand new device. Its a shame there's not a simple fix for this issue.

I was in the same boat. No white 64GB edge within 200 miles. I went through the same thing on the phone with Verizon. I had to explain to the CSR on the phone that it is not a warranty claim nor an insurance claim. It is an exchange and there is absolutely no reason for not getting a brand new phone.... But they wanted me to send the phone to them first and then they would send me a brand new one after receiving the bad one. Good you are getting a new one. I actually went a got a black one from the store. I had, had enough of Verizon and just wanted a properly functioning phone.

Ya, if it's not new I'll just swap it out at the store for a regular S6. At this point I'm just hoping they keep their word and it's a new device. I'm not a very patient person and with as much time as I've already put in with Verizon, it's not worth it to keep swapping phones.
How's your replacement working so far?
Gave droid-life some info on the issue and they did a write up. Hopefully it'll get some more attention and we'll get a definite answer on the cause from Samsung soon.

I'm not patient either... Especially when it comes to stuff like this. You should call Verizon after you get your phone and see if they can credit your account for all the hassle. They credited me $40.
Hope it all works out for you!

Nice! If the same issue pops up on the new phone I'll definitely be doing that.
So far so good. I'm doing a fast charge to see if that makes it kick the bucket, then I'll add my apps again. If it goes bonkers in a few days, I'll move on to the S6. Anyways, what I wanted to post is some disappointing news (for me). It'll be hard to tell unless anyone else has this issue and can download the "Phone Info Samsung" app. My original phone that had the issue was made on 3-29-15 in China. The phone they replaced it with was also made on 3-29-15 in China. If its hardware related, surely I'm screwed.
Got my edge on launch day and was fine for one day, then wouldn't rotate. So, I replaced it. Agaij, for one day it was fine and then started to not rotate again. I wasn't going to replace it every time this happened, so I waited it out and as of yesterday, the rotation is working fine, like it just fixed itself.

the phone i have that is not working was made on 2015.04.02 (not sure if February or April) and also made in China. I will check when i get the new phone to find out.
I'm having the same problem. I honestly didn't even realize it until I started seeing people with the issue... Now it bothers the hell out of me. I'm going to try to get a new one from a store after work today.
Although I find it hard to believe it's a hardware issue when this many devices are seeing it. Working right out of the box and then all of a sudden it stops is pretty indicative of software in my eyes... At least that's what I'm hoping for.

If you dont mind, download the Phone Info Samsung app and share when and where your device was made. Seems like devices made in China are the majority of the ones with the issue.

I'm definitely starting to guess it has something to do with the phones made in China. What sucks is the replacement phone I just got was made on 3-29-15 in China too.
Thanks for sharing your info btw!
