Won't power on AND this happens when it does - Nook Color General

?? any idea and it just stays like that

Have you tried a hard reboot? What is the status of your NC? Rooted? Stock 1.2? CM7? Had you "done" or "loaded" anything just before? Is there a bootable uSD in the slot?
Bit more info would be spiffy here.

With so little to go on, it's hard to say what's happening; but it looks like a problem with the hardware to me. Particularly, the LCD panel seems to be on the fritz.
How old is the Nook? Had it been working fine for more than just a few days before this problem occurred? Any drops or spills in the recent past?

When was it purchased? Seems like the LCD panel is busted. If it's rooted or not, take it to the BN Store and have it replaced.

It was a trade and it was fine it for weeks and then one day started doing this, and now just hardly ever get it too turn on and it does that when it does.
i nor he never moded it in any way, hardware or software. it's stock

Oh and it does it with or without a SD card in it, i recently made the SD card into a clockwork one to try and fix it but no luck since it wont even come on hardly ever and sticks there and sometimes gets to the big U but never past there

Well, everything made by man breaks eventually an this one is definitely broken. If there is no sign of obvious trauma or water damage, you can probably get a warranty replacement.
I'd say it's time to take it to your local B&N store and get a new one. I imagine they would like to see the receipt, but I'm not sure.
If you can't get the receipt from your friend, you might have to try to sell it to the guy in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145789
You could also try calling B&N Digital Support like the guy in the last post of that thread suggested.
Good Luck

I realize its the screen, even when I put in the SD with clockwork it goes haywire. Where on earth do you get a screen???

You don't get a new screen. You get a replacement unit from B&N, more than likely refurbished.

But the refurb Nook Color - I received - along with many others - looks and works like Brand new device.

I guess I am stuck. This was bought way past any exchange period. I think the unit is all bad anyway, besides the screen it will hardly ever turn on.

sound fix

Im unable to return my nook due to it being a gift, and being outside of return period. My nook color is rooted and has all the goodies done, is there a fix for the standby sound issue? Its kinda annoying that i lose sound everytime it goes to standby
Just so you know, B&N is accepting returns untill Jan 31. Probably those purchased in December I would suppose.
Cheers,
kev
BTW I exchanged mine for that issue just in case there was not a forthcoming F/W fix. I noticed that after B&N did a factory reset on mine the problem was gone, until I rebooted it, so don't fall for that "fix".
Unfort t was bought at best buy in november
I had the same audio issue as you and mine was also a gift. I went into Barnes and noble, even without a reciept and they gave me a new one. Didn't even usevthr credit card to look up the purchase, it was great.
Too bad mang

There is an app that wont let the book go to sleep. You can still turn off the screen, but it wont go to sleep. Im sorry,i don't remember the name. It works well though.i used while i had a defective one like yours.
So far there has been no feedback from B&N on this issue. I have heard nothing about any investigation into what the root cause is, so there is no knowing if a F/W fix is indicated. There may have been a running hdwr change or a different F/W build that is the cause on a certain batch of units. Those here have not noted the SN of the failing units, so no way to know which to stay away from. I was hoping, that by now, B&N would have addressed this. That may indicate that it is not fixable with F/W. It certainly qualifies for a warranty replacement though. The longer you wait to return it, the better chance you will get a refurb in exchange. That's not necessarily bad, just mentioning it.
Cheers,
kv
i called tech support, and this is one fo the reasons i love barnes and noble.... they are going to exchange it in store for me. pretty amazing considering it was bought at a best buy! i will never own a kindle for this reason. they impressed me alot with being willing to do this to keep a customer happy!
Is the sound issue just on rooted nooks? Mine is doing the same but thought it was a price for having it rooted. Btw, don't forget to unroot before taking it in.

The app is called Softlocker and it doesn't really effect battery too much... it also gives instant wake.

Isn't really that big of surprise... Best Buy is a re-SELLER, and in this case, Barnes & Noble is the MANUFACTURER with a one year warranty. They cannot deny warranty claims at this point because all Nook Colors are less than one year old. It is good to hear that B & N seem to want to have a good reputation for honoring their warranty!
I have read several questions about this problem in this thread. This is pretty well discussed previously here & on other forums. If you need to research it, search should show some results.

[Q] Cappy in the dryer = blue screen

Hey folks, I accidentally left my Captivate in a pocket and it went through a dryer cycle. It boots just fine and the audio works. However, the screen is blue with some lighter blue horizontal lines (effectively it just looks blue). I'm able to navigate by memory through the UI. So it seems it's just a video problem.
I tried a hairdryer for a few minutes on an open back.
I left it open, battery out, sim, sd out for about 2 hours.
Any ideas on ways to attempt to fix it?
thanks in advance!
As an aside, i was just about to install ICSSGS 3.1!
May sound odd but when you boot it up is there any parts where it's a pure color instead of the tinted blue? If so you might want to try a new ROM.
My guess is that the screen is toast from the heat of the dryer. Did it go through the washer first?
Most likely you will be needing to swap the screen.

Any idea whether this is cost effective? If so, any trustworthy places people have used? A little google time left me feeling uncertain about the places selling replacements, and even more problematic, I'm not sure I know what, exactly, needs replacing.
If I don't do the work myself, the cost seems to be about the same as getting a used cappy. Any thoughts out there?
thanks!
I cracked my screen 3 days after getting it. It was about $90 to buy a replacement screen on ebay. I ended up just signing up for ATT insurance and getting it replaced for the $125 deductible. That doesn't sound like an option for you unless you already have the insurance.
I've been told doing the swap isn't that bad. However, you could end up back in the same situation if you mess it up.
You could buy the used cappy and possibly inherit some new problems.
You could get it repaired if everything else with your phone checks out. This may be a good idea if you haven't had any sleep deaths or your GPS works well. The downside is that heat could cause the phone to fail sooner in the future.
Ouch... Costs over a hundred on Amazon. I was surprised since iPod touch 4g screens go for like $20

I think it is due to the construction type of the screen. Since it is all one piece, you can't just replace the glass or the digitizer. It's an all or nothing which drives the price up.
There is a difference between the screen and digitizer. Screens go for the $90-$150 cost (more or less) digitizers cost usually $20. Mobiletechvideos.com charge $150 for new screen and digitizer and the actual work to do it. Kinda expensive IMO, but each their own. I can probably get a new phone for $150 where I live.

Not really, but I do notice when I bring it out of sleep there are some vertical lines that pop in and I can see shadowy bits of the UI. I keep hoping if I let it sit, plugged in...

These are the two same thoughts I keep having... seems like going the cheap route is pretty risky. I have an upgrade eligibility coming in April. I just hate signing a 2-year agreement with AT&T right now. Service at my house isn't great and I'm already paying for the microcell.
All in all I've been very pleased with the captivate. I've been upgrading ROM's quite a bit, and found the device to be pretty reliable. So sad to see it in this condition...
You're paying for the microcell still? When I asked about it, they told me if I were to get it thru them at the discount price, that I only had to pay the extra cost one month, discontinue the extra cost on my account, and the microcell stays active. I believe the extra cost was unlimited minutes at the time I asked. Could be different now though I guess.
Sorry to hear about your screen, but all I have seen is what mobiletechvideos offers. I was looking for a friend, because her screen cracked up by the speaker. It doesn't affect anything, she just dislikes having a cracked screen.

[Q] Bricked it HARD...anyone recommend a repair shop?

It seems I have a hardware issue as right after installing a nightly CM9, it seemed to be working fiine when I went to install a simple batery level mod and I got the "UI has stopped working" warning and when I went to reboot to reflash the OS, it suddenly displayed the BSOD (with tightly spaced black thin lines) and now NOTHING I've tried will get it to respond.
I've done all the button push combos, plugged it into the computer, left it on charge overnight....nothing...absolutely nothing.
This was a very stable TP before this episode.
So after diagnosing it with an HP chat session...and volunteering the CM9 install, of course my warranty is void and they want $235 to repair it...I could replace it cheaper.
So, any independants doing repairs on these yet? Preferably in the midwest.
I don't think they'd repair it anyway if you sent it in (even if warranty is still on) because it has a 3rd party OS on it. You may just get it returned in the mail despite them knowing it beforehand.
I bricked my Nook Color running CM7 after installing a battery app. from the market before, and someone warned me against them here on XDA saying this is not uncommon.
Now I try to avoid installing any now on my TP and just use the built in battery reader. With my Nook, I did manage to unbrick it via button reset combos. Hope you sort it out with your TP.
Tried webos doctor? I have seen it fix this.

There is a guy on webosnation.com who repairs Touchpad.
Try this forum (I dont remember his name): http://forums.webosnation.com/hp-touchpad/
might be helpful, ive recovered a few "completely bricked" Tp's to perfect factory condition, it might look confusing/overwhelming, but its easier than it looks, and better than paying someone to fix it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1564938

to me it sounds like either a "hard" soft-brick, or a definate hardware failure.
the TP cant be hard bricked at all, its the best feature about it and can always be recovered with a little elbow grease and carpel tunnel
as for the hardware failure, if the TP is under warranty still, HP will fix the issue or send you a refurb, but at a hefty price...and the problem with sending it to a user to fix is that they might not be able to find/resolve the problem, and you'll still have to go back to HP or move on to a new tablet and sell the TP for parts...
now as for recovering it yourself, have you done any testing to see if you can get the hardware to detect on PC by hearing the "usb connected" sound? there are 3 methods to try this, 1 is just plugging in and hard resetting, the other is to go to the regular download mode, and the last is the dev download mode (i cant remember how to do that one again, you might have to search for it)
if either of these give you the usb connected sound, even for a second, then you are in luck and its just a soft brick which is recoverable.
if not, try to "charge" for a few hours, repeat the test and see if it yields any results. if not, then its a hardware failure, and the smartest bet is to send to HP for repair/refurb
If it is hardware bricked, try seeing if they will accept it back under warranty without telling them about the different OS (unless you already gave them all your info). They may be able to recover it or replace it without knowing. If they find it and want that price, then tell then to shove it and find another.
The chance that they will not discover the OS is pretty good if it is hardware bricked, so absent another good alternative - give it a try.
unfortunately, one look at the partition table, and HP will send it right back, no follow up investigation whatsoever, and include a memo stating price to repair a "voided-warranty" touchpad
i know it sucks, but thats the price we pay (pun unintentional/intended) for quality aftermarket OS's beyond the scope of support
EDIT** Doug, any luck?
No luck...am currently looking for a cheap broken screen TP for parts.....and am guessing I need the logic board.
In the mean time, I bought an Asus TF300T tablet....nice

hahaha id stop looking, thats a fantastic replacement!
and it sucks that the TP died, its a decent quick use tablet, but it is one of those literal "you get what you pay for" products
I would still sent it in.
If it is so badly bricked that they cannot activate it enough to see anything - you should get a replacement. Otherwise, you should have the option of them shipping it back - unless you just want to forgetaboutit at that point.

unbelieveably fixable (youll love the size of the battery ), the worst part is the reassembly of the screen with the rubber gromit/gasket that goes around it, what a niusance!

i dont know about that. I think you get a bit more than you pay for. I would say it's worth about 250 (w/ android) considering a smaller and less specced kindle sells for 200.

that really depends on the users needs, especially if the require fully working camera, bt etc. and full H/W accel video (and proper manuf. support/updates)
the touchpad is an excellent "fun" tablet to muck about with, and an amazing cheap tablet (i still use webOS once in a while too! ), but if you need something reliable, lightweight, and fully supported, then any of the big 5 are an excellent choice for that.
having said that, i 100% agree with you (especially if purchased on firesale) the TP is prolly the only current/next gen tablet ill ever own anyway because it does everything that i need in a tablet and then some
EDIT** and when i said "you get what you pay for" i literally meant you buy it, its yours, and it is what it is unless you are willing to take the risk (no real support from HP)
WOW...^^ I fixed it!! I was waiting (still am ) for a parts TP I bought from eBay and thought I'd try just putting it all back together...(I'd taken it apart awaiting the parts)...and I'll be damned it came back on and has been fine!!
My guess is that the charging circuit in these things is ultra sensitive and demanding of it's own proccess. I still am not sure why mine glitched and died, but simply removing the battery for a period of time and reinstalling it seemed to fix the problem. Battery was at 35% when it awoke...when it died it was around 85%.
Thanks for all the ideas and help......now if I could just get my $$ or the TP from eBay (it's been 11 days) I'd be even happier.....

[Q] Droid 4 Touchscreen and Lockscreen issues

Hello Xda,
This is my first post here although I've lurked for quite some time looking for answers and help.
I just got my droid 4 over winter break and I have been loving it since. The update to JB was nice but it took me some time to get it right because I am specialâ„¢.
Anyways, here's my problem: A few weeks ago I was napping on a couch and I rolled over and the phone fell to the ground screen down. Later that morning the touch screen started acting erratically where it would not work until i locked and unlocked the phone. After having that happen a few times later that day the touch screen went out completely. I rebooted the phone by holding the lockscreen down and using the keyboard to select power off. When I turned it back on even the lock screen had started being screwy, which leaves me to where I am now. The lock screen locks the phone perfectly, but it i have to hit it multiple times and hope that it will turn on in the next 5-10 before trying again. The touch screen still does not work. I have read around and saw that it could be the digitizer. I took the phone apart once to make sure nothing was loose anywhere before I bought it and since that did not fix the phone I went ahead and purchased a new digitzer. I just finished installing it and I'm still having the same issues. So xda, I'm lost.
I really don't feel like buying a new phone and I'd love to try and repair this. Does anyone have any ideas on where the problem could be? I checked the pins on the back of the mobo and they looked fine. I just left the phone on a bit too long and got about 2 weeks worth of texts so it still runs smoothly..just without a damn touch screen.
Thank you for your help and reading this wall of text!
Edit: I just realized lockscreen is meant to be lock button in the title, sorry for any confusion!

Wow! That's bizaare. I can safely say that I've dropped my Droid 4 multiple times in the year that I've owned it, including on hard surfaces, and I've never had any problems as such. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
This sounds like a pretty in depth hardware issue, and I think it's beyond my scope of knowledge, But, I would like to ask, did you buy the phone from a third party? Or directly from your service provider? Because if you bought it from your provider, I was going to ask if you had insurance on the phone. If not, that sort of issue may very well be under warranty, depending on when the phone was manufactured. But, you probably voided it if you opened it up and changed a component in it
The only other advice I can offer, outside of buying a new phone, would be to take it to a third party repair shop. If you're in the U.S., Verizon has an independent franchise called Wireless Zone that I believe does phone and tablet repairs. I'd see if there's one in your area. Me personally, I think I'd just avoid the hassle and buy a new phone, but it's up to you. Not sure how much you can find a D4 for on eBay or Craigslist these days, but I'd go that route. Sorry I can't be more help. Good luck!

I had dropped it many times(I'm very clumsy with my phone) before that. This was not even the worst drop of them all so it really confuses me too. I did buy it off ebay so there was no hope for warranty which is why I went down the try and fix it myself route. I did exactly as you said a few days ago. I gave up and bought another one off craigslist. A case is already on the way too so this does not happen again. My theory is that the connections from the front half of the phone(the led/digitizer, etc) where the two pieces attach back to the circuit board have gone bad somehow. I zombiefied the phone with just the circuit board and the screen to see if pressing in different spots would fix anything but to no avail. I'm just going to hold on to it for awhile and mess with it in my spare time now hehe. Thanks for the advice!
Edit: I just wish Motorola would come out with the Droid 5 or some other new smartphone with a keyboard. I guess I'm old school but I can't go with a touchscreen only phone

Ah, ok. Well, that's still pretty crazy that it happened. Sorry for the delayed response, but anyway glad to hear that you've got a new one on the way, and a new case coming too.
Yeah, I'm the same way. I got the D4 cuz I really like having a keyboard. Unfortunately, it looks like it may be the last keyboard phone to come out for a while, if ever. But on a sidenote, a lot of the newer phones with big screens have really good touchscreens that I think wouldn't be so bad to type on. My girlfriend's GS3 is awesome. I think I could get used to it. And even if you get touchscreen only phone, I do believe that there are a number of third party keyboards you can buy that will plug into the phone. That will probably be the way to go in the future.

[Q] Screen died

My HD+ has a history of its screen flickering. It was mostly tolerable, but last night it just shut off completely and won't come back on. I was wondering what peoples' experiences have been on getting replacement or repair from B&N. If anybody has experienced this same issue, great, but I know some people have bricked their EMMC, too. I've only had it since March 1, but I no longer have the receipt. It is registered on the B&N site, but I wonder if it might cause issue that I'm running CM 10.2. The people with bricked EMMCs obviously wouldn't have to worry about that since the EMMC is dead. What is the procedure? Can you just walk into the store with it?

Yes, you can just walk in with it. Tell them the screen is dead and give them you serial number and name.
But if it has CM on it the warranty is void. So best to try to get it off. If you still have stock recovery installed you can do the 8 failed boot procedure to get the stock ROM back.
But if the store cannot tell CM is on it, then go for it.

Yeah, it has TWRP on it. If they can't get the screen to turn on then they won't see it by turning on the device, at least not until later if/when they get the screen working, if they bother. However, I don't know if they have other methods of determining what's on the device, because it "works" just fine, e.g. I can plug it into my pc and manipulate the files on the storage, and adb probably works as well. This isn't the first time the screen has gone blank like this, but usually I can at least get the lock screen to display for a moment or two before it blacks out, and after a few hours it'll come back on. This time I'm not getting anything except a detectable brightening when you first turn it on that soon dims. However, it could easily just miraculously start working again as it has before.
This thread has got me feeling a bit concerned, because lately my screen is momentarily blacking out every now and then.

Well, my screen did start working again, so I've restored to stock. It now looks washed out and there is a 2-3 inch band at the top where it is discolored. I'm excited that tomorrow I will finally be in the vicinity of a Barnes and Noble and hope to exchange it. I just hope any replacement I get will have an emmc compatible with TRIM.
Here's the final resolution. The Nooks have a 1 year warranty. I bought mine in March, but they tried to tell me that the warranty expired yesterday. Convenient. Well, it turns out because I bought mine from Walmart that they are going by the day that Walmart bought it from them. Whatever; the manager was sympathetic and offered to replace it, but there was a problem. I had the 32GB model and they didn't have any refurb 32GBs around. So I had 3 choices: get a refurb 16GB model, wait to see if they get any 32GBs in within a week (they could request one), or I could mail my broken one to corporate and wait for them to mail me a replacement. Since I can't make it to the store very frequently and probably won't be there for months and I don't want to deal with the corporate with whom I would have to submit my request for a replacement anew and hope they approved it, and because I was determined not to leave the store without a functional tablet, I ended up bringing home a shiny 16GB that I don't think was ever used or was not used much. Mostly likely a return from somebody who changed their mind. So yay, I got a new tablet, but boo, I have 16GB less storage space. I checked the EMMC for TRIM and it appears to be ok, so I'm pretty much good besides not being able to store as much.
