My HD+ has a history of its screen flickering. It was mostly tolerable, but last night it just shut off completely and won't come back on. I was wondering what peoples' experiences have been on getting replacement or repair from B&N. If anybody has experienced this same issue, great, but I know some people have bricked their EMMC, too. I've only had it since March 1, but I no longer have the receipt. It is registered on the B&N site, but I wonder if it might cause issue that I'm running CM 10.2. The people with bricked EMMCs obviously wouldn't have to worry about that since the EMMC is dead. What is the procedure? Can you just walk into the store with it?

Yes, you can just walk in with it. Tell them the screen is dead and give them you serial number and name.
But if it has CM on it the warranty is void. So best to try to get it off. If you still have stock recovery installed you can do the 8 failed boot procedure to get the stock ROM back.
But if the store cannot tell CM is on it, then go for it.

Yeah, it has TWRP on it. If they can't get the screen to turn on then they won't see it by turning on the device, at least not until later if/when they get the screen working, if they bother. However, I don't know if they have other methods of determining what's on the device, because it "works" just fine, e.g. I can plug it into my pc and manipulate the files on the storage, and adb probably works as well. This isn't the first time the screen has gone blank like this, but usually I can at least get the lock screen to display for a moment or two before it blacks out, and after a few hours it'll come back on. This time I'm not getting anything except a detectable brightening when you first turn it on that soon dims. However, it could easily just miraculously start working again as it has before.
This thread has got me feeling a bit concerned, because lately my screen is momentarily blacking out every now and then.

Well, my screen did start working again, so I've restored to stock. It now looks washed out and there is a 2-3 inch band at the top where it is discolored. I'm excited that tomorrow I will finally be in the vicinity of a Barnes and Noble and hope to exchange it. I just hope any replacement I get will have an emmc compatible with TRIM.
Here's the final resolution. The Nooks have a 1 year warranty. I bought mine in March, but they tried to tell me that the warranty expired yesterday. Convenient. Well, it turns out because I bought mine from Walmart that they are going by the day that Walmart bought it from them. Whatever; the manager was sympathetic and offered to replace it, but there was a problem. I had the 32GB model and they didn't have any refurb 32GBs around. So I had 3 choices: get a refurb 16GB model, wait to see if they get any 32GBs in within a week (they could request one), or I could mail my broken one to corporate and wait for them to mail me a replacement. Since I can't make it to the store very frequently and probably won't be there for months and I don't want to deal with the corporate with whom I would have to submit my request for a replacement anew and hope they approved it, and because I was determined not to leave the store without a functional tablet, I ended up bringing home a shiny 16GB that I don't think was ever used or was not used much. Mostly likely a return from somebody who changed their mind. So yay, I got a new tablet, but boo, I have 16GB less storage space. I checked the EMMC for TRIM and it appears to be ok, so I'm pretty much good besides not being able to store as much.

Thinking of buying a "refurbished" at&t captivate. does anybody have any advice to if the device is worth buying if it is refurbished, if any of you guys have bought it that way..and also is it really worth it in att network or should I be warned and wait till MARCHH! to switch over to another carrier ?
currently have a iphone 3g but i really want to switch over to android
Mine is a insurance replacement so it is refurbed, have had other refurbed phones and haven't had any problemss out of either. I love the phone itself. Go to any sub forum and you can tell the phone has gps issues, some worse then others. This is my 3rd (first couldn't go into recovery, and second was lost), and gps is worse then all the previous ones. Even with the problems, I still wouldn't give this phone up. Probably because I love the hardware and its my first android device and apple wasn't a choice for me. As for the network I hadn't any problems with att since 2004. I'm sure that depends on you location tho.

Two weeks ago I bought the HTC Aria with rebate for $29. Then another employee wrote saying they wanted to upgrade their phone, and wanted the Captivate. I looked online and saw that it was $299. A few days go by and he agrees to the price, and when I go to order it, lo and behold ATT has refurb for $50 each! I bought two, one for him and one for me . I like the aria and it is now my backup, but I love the Captivate and for $50, it's hard to go wrong.
tl;dr, buy it.
Did the refurb unit have any signs of use or scratches or anything? I might get one soon too.
Go for it..it's a great phone. Just make sure you can check it out in person first,or can return it if broken.
Mac
I got a refurb.
And it's perfect. Looks brand new. And no problems
I have a refurb......... no major issues. One thing to look for though.......... I got my first one 4 days ago, worked fine, but after being on for a little bit the battery went completely dead after being on standby for 30 min. yeah, something was wrong with the battery, on top of that it would randomly exit me out of screens.
turned out they sent me one that had NOT been fixed yet, their boo boo. They sent me out a new one and I got it today. This one looked brand new, all the stickers from samsung still on it and everything. Let it charge and turned it on....... no more issues.
It lags a little and the battery life REALLY sux, but those are issues with brand new ones also. I turned on my task killer and put the security level to low so that I could kill everything but non essential apps. Now the battery life seems MUCH better. It seems like this phone takes a long time to charge as well though. I think i wll just allow the battery to fully drain then plug it in, see if that will work, maber get rid of any potential battery memory.
Thanks for the help, appreciate it....I ordered it already and should get it in 2-5 business days so i will post back on my thoughts!
cant wait to start using the android OS!!!!
I am on a refurb now. I love this thing. No [hardware] issues at all.

i have a refubished phone and its better than the new one I had
I got a new Samsung Captivate and it keeps rebooting on me at random and the keys (especially back key) are really bad. They dont recognzie my touch half the time unless I press really hard on them.
My question is....if I get a replacment how will I be able to tell if its a refurb or not?
Are the refubs typically better since they have had more extensive testing?
Anybody have any thoughts on this?
with anything there are defect but these phones are built like a rock and if you think about it, if there is a x probability that a device has a defect the probability that it has 2 is x^2(in theory, obviously the nature of the defect factors in) so if the phone had a defect that was fixed there is a pretty slim chance that it will be defective after it is repaired.
i wouldn't worry about a refurbished phone, there may be cosmetic damage ect. but i would recommend this phone to anyone on build quality alone. wear and tear related problems should be minimal. id say go for it.
I had 3 refurb fuzes and 2 razr9s. Only real problem you have to worry about is physical defects. Hinges mostly. If there is a software or hardware problem you can send it back.
Edit: you can also get insurance on an unused refurb through at&t
From a phone on an app
Any one who has replaced a phone using insurance or warranty thru ATT is most likely using a refurbed phone. I have replaced every phone i have ever had in 10 years with ATT due to my being really hard on phones at work and all the replacements have been refurbed. I personally have never had an issue with a refurb, they all lokked and performe like new. I actually just got my cappy a few weeks ago and ordered the refurb cause i knew i would end up with one anyway.( and got lucky in doing so and got a batch 1007 phone so my 3button download mode doesnt get wiped.)
Works Perfecly and only set me back $50
I messed up my first captivate. Was able to return it through warranty and got a refurbished unit. I have been using it for 3 months with no issues. Of coarse there is no guarantee

Im unable to return my nook due to it being a gift, and being outside of return period. My nook color is rooted and has all the goodies done, is there a fix for the standby sound issue? Its kinda annoying that i lose sound everytime it goes to standby
Just so you know, B&N is accepting returns untill Jan 31. Probably those purchased in December I would suppose.
Cheers,

BTW I exchanged mine for that issue just in case there was not a forthcoming F/W fix. I noticed that after B&N did a factory reset on mine the problem was gone, until I rebooted it, so don't fall for that "fix".
Unfort t was bought at best buy in november
I had the same audio issue as you and mine was also a gift. I went into Barnes and noble, even without a reciept and they gave me a new one. Didn't even usevthr credit card to look up the purchase, it was great.
Too bad mang

There is an app that wont let the book go to sleep. You can still turn off the screen, but it wont go to sleep. Im sorry,i don't remember the name. It works well though.i used while i had a defective one like yours.
So far there has been no feedback from B&N on this issue. I have heard nothing about any investigation into what the root cause is, so there is no knowing if a F/W fix is indicated. There may have been a running hdwr change or a different F/W build that is the cause on a certain batch of units. Those here have not noted the SN of the failing units, so no way to know which to stay away from. I was hoping, that by now, B&N would have addressed this. That may indicate that it is not fixable with F/W. It certainly qualifies for a warranty replacement though. The longer you wait to return it, the better chance you will get a refurb in exchange. That's not necessarily bad, just mentioning it.
Cheers,
kv
i called tech support, and this is one fo the reasons i love barnes and noble.... they are going to exchange it in store for me. pretty amazing considering it was bought at a best buy! i will never own a kindle for this reason. they impressed me alot with being willing to do this to keep a customer happy!
Is the sound issue just on rooted nooks? Mine is doing the same but thought it was a price for having it rooted. Btw, don't forget to unroot before taking it in.

Isn't really that big of surprise... Best Buy is a re-SELLER, and in this case, Barnes & Noble is the MANUFACTURER with a one year warranty. They cannot deny warranty claims at this point because all Nook Colors are less than one year old. It is good to hear that B & N seem to want to have a good reputation for honoring their warranty!
I have read several questions about this problem in this thread. This is pretty well discussed previously here & on other forums. If you need to research it, search should show some results.

There are so many threads where folks *thought* they had bricked their NC but they were able to finally get it going again.
Short of physically breaking your NC, is there any way to truly brick it?
I got to a point where I could not get my Nook to boot stock or rooted, it would only run from SD-I think I formatted boot when I should not have. I tried every fix I could find and nothing would work. So I boxed it up and into a BN store, the Guy disappeared for 40 minutes and then came back with it working. He didn't want to tell me what they did but I assume they either keep up with the forums or have some other tool for bringing them back.

When you got it back, was it stock 1.01 or 1.1 or something else? Did they charge you anything? Warn you not to mess with it anymore?
I'm trying to get an understanding of possible B&N attitude to our doings....
i didnt tell them what I had been doing with it. i just told him that I received a notification to update to 1.1 and after I did the update it never booted up again
i am assuming that he knew what i was doing but just did not say anything. he did not charge me anything for bringing it back to life. he brought it back at first with 1.0.1 then I said it was the 1.1 update that caused the problem so he went back for another 10 minutes and came back with 1.1 on it and said he had to sideload that. he never at any point gave me any trouble or warnings - just kept trying to get me to buy screen protectors and covers!
i would love to know what they did to bring it back as i had tried everything i could find on the web!
So you just went to a local BN, and a bookstore clerk fixed it for you?
Either this was a very easy (yet still somehow secret) fix for him to apply, or BN has an outstanding internal training program, or your guy was in touch with his inner talented IT self.
I really would have expected that you'd need to send your NC to some warranty depot across the country to get fixed. I really wouldn't think that the local BN clerk could fix it. I really thought it'd fall outside the scope of their positions.
Thanks for this!

odly enough in the book on how to use your nook there is a part about rooting your nc for full market use, and no one at the B&N seemed to care that i did it with mine. they actually all want me to root theres for them =DDD
Yeah, I was really surprised. I figured they were going to have to send it out or they were just going to give me a replacement. I didnt expect them to fix it right there. I am glad they did though! I am sticking with custom nookie froyo 0.6.8 on SD for now!
Thank you for the quick replies! Mine is working fine, but it is great to know that if something happens I can't seem to fix, they will help!
I'm using Honeycomb 4 Release 2 on EMMC atm. I'm loving it! Will be glad when video is fixed on it, but I don't really watch videos much... So it is running everything I want and more!
I am positive it's unbrickable, though I've been attempting to revert it back to stock for 3 weeks now without any success. Not giving up yet.
If anyone cares, I compiled a thread on issues related to SD apps (CWR, roms) not loading successfully:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972012
The clerk at B&N was happy to talk about rooting the Nookcolor with me. Unlike at Verizon where I feel like a marked man when I walk through the door.
you got pretty lucky i think. most of them wouldve had no idea what to do. he probably has one himself he toys around with and pretty much knew what you did. no company is going to train theyre everyday clerks to unbrick a machine like that.
I think you are right on that
?? any idea and it just stays like that
Have you tried a hard reboot? What is the status of your NC? Rooted? Stock 1.2? CM7? Had you "done" or "loaded" anything just before? Is there a bootable uSD in the slot?
Bit more info would be spiffy here.
With so little to go on, it's hard to say what's happening; but it looks like a problem with the hardware to me. Particularly, the LCD panel seems to be on the fritz.
How old is the Nook? Had it been working fine for more than just a few days before this problem occurred? Any drops or spills in the recent past?
When was it purchased? Seems like the LCD panel is busted. If it's rooted or not, take it to the BN Store and have it replaced.
It was a trade and it was fine it for weeks and then one day started doing this, and now just hardly ever get it too turn on and it does that when it does.
i nor he never moded it in any way, hardware or software. it's stock
Oh and it does it with or without a SD card in it, i recently made the SD card into a clockwork one to try and fix it but no luck since it wont even come on hardly ever and sticks there and sometimes gets to the big U but never past there

Well, everything made by man breaks eventually an this one is definitely broken. If there is no sign of obvious trauma or water damage, you can probably get a warranty replacement.
I'd say it's time to take it to your local B&N store and get a new one. I imagine they would like to see the receipt, but I'm not sure.
If you can't get the receipt from your friend, you might have to try to sell it to the guy in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145789
You could also try calling B&N Digital Support like the guy in the last post of that thread suggested.
Good Luck
I realize its the screen, even when I put in the SD with clockwork it goes haywire. Where on earth do you get a screen???

You don't get a new screen. You get a replacement unit from B&N, more than likely refurbished.

But the refurb Nook Color - I received - along with many others - looks and works like Brand new device.
I guess I am stuck. This was bought way past any exchange period. I think the unit is all bad anyway, besides the screen it will hardly ever turn on.
Hey guys,
Just as a note: the Nook Color has a 1 year warranty. Because of this, even if your Nook Color that you got off eBay (or wherever) has issues, just call (800) THE-BOOK ((800) 843-2665) and they'll replace it for you for free. They'll cross-ship it to you in a maximum of 3 days (YMMV) and you can just ship the old one back in the box that the new one comes in. They'll give you a shipping label for free and everything.
The Nook Color you get is certified pre-owned, which is good enough for me. (and CM7)
I don't know what the threshold is for them (B&N) to say "NO." (e.g., your Nook is totaled) Can anyone comment?
One thing to add to this. I bought a Nook Color from an Ebay seller. The Nook Color was a Walmart open box return and had been registered to who ever tried it out and then returned it.
Required to calls to B&N support to get it registered. First person sounded new and would not deviate from the script. The second person I got understood the issue and got the old registration removed. I was then able to register without any issues. The seller said he had another buyer with the same problem.
Just be aware that a used/open box may already be registered and cause you issues.

You know, I had the same thing! I called in because my SD card slot didn't work. They wanted me to verify the information they had on-file for that Nook. Even though I had registered the Nook my information wasn't in their system, which was really odd. I waited and I called back again to confirm that the older owner's info was still in there. Magically, my info was fine and in their system! They gave me the ol' chestnut about how their systems are slow to update...bah!
Yep. BN is really good with this. I actually screwed the power button and they replaced it. I also broke the cable 3 times and they gave me a new one each time. Also registration was down one day so I called them up and they fixed it up for me
I also asked them about warranties. They mentioned that they will honor the longer warranty. For example, my NC's original owner bought it in November of 2010, thus the warranty expires November 2011. A pre-owned NC (which I got) gets a 90-day warranty. My replacement falls under the longer warranty. Sweet!
The pre-owned nook has a 1-year warranty and a 90 day phone support, at least if you get it certified from B&N.

I am assuming that's if you get a Pre-Owned Nook Color directly from Barnes & Noble. I got my Pre-Owned Nook Color as a replacement for another Nook Color so things are a little different for me. Just clarifying for others that may be reading.
I got in on the Overstock.com refirb deal and after a couple of weeks, mine got really flaky about being handled. If I touched the back of unit, 50% chance it would reboot. I called BN and they sent a new unit advanced exchange. The only thing I lost was a screen protector.
I was pretty impressed with their customer service.
YMMV,
Paul
I bought mine pre-owned and it was previously registered. The 2 people i talked to refused to delete the previous owners registration and refused to warranty my nook. Gave me a real sour experience for B&N.

Sorry to hear that. You can easily overwrite that by just going through the stock registration. That will associate that NC's serial number with your B&N account, and thus you.

Seriously? So if i returned the nook to stock, and did the registration on it, i'd get warranty on it? I might try that if so, but would i have to re-do clockwork to get stock OS on it or can i do it from a SD card?

Yup. Speaking of which, does anyone know of a way to run the B&N registration from a 3rd party ROM?
I can somewhat concur. I went through 2 NCs before finally settling on a third. The first one had a bad pixel or cluster of pixels, the second had either bad pixels or a bunch of dust under the screen plus a wonky touchscreen, and finally the third just has dust under the screen. We had to call in for the first two and after a little bit of a runaround and at least 30 minutes of being instructed to turn off the Nook, turn it back on, yada yada, they finally agreed to send out a new one and placing a temporary charge on our credit card. Overall, I guess it's not too bad, but I've gone through 3 different NCs and none are "perfect" -- this last one just having a bit of dust stuck under the screen.
The thing that got us miffed was when we tried to just exchange the NCs in store. We bought them online from B&N's storefront, why not just exchange them in store, right? NOOOO -- we got treated so rudely, like we were thieves trying to pull a fast one, just for buying a Nook FROM B&N's storefront and wanting to get one that works correctly and not have to wait several more days, go through another tedious phone call, and get another temporary charge placed on our card.
In the end, the NC is probably worth it, but I can't say I've been overwhelmed by B&N's support. I have half a mind to try returning this current one, but it seems like a gamble as to whether the replacements are any better. I feel bad complaining about B&N when the hardware is pretty nice, but it was nearly a month before I actually got to settle in with my NC, let alone being hassled so much throughout the process.
I agree that not having an exchange right there in-store is complete BS. Sorry to hear your luck. Maybe I'm just lucky with tech?
I had a NC that would not successfully complete the registration process. I bought it used off of Craigslist. I took it to a nearby B&N store and worked with a tech for about a half an hour. They ended up replacing it with a preowned model they had in stock.
I would suggest that if you fail at one store, ti might be worth going to another i (if you live in a larger city)
