You do not state what carrier you use, but we are having a terrible time with Vodafone and Android not sending receiving SMS/MMS. I posted this on both Vodafail.com and Whirlpool.net.au, and you may find your answer towards the bottom of the post:
"I pay for a third generation data service W-CDMA (UTMS) which Vodafoney started to introduce as far back as 2004. I have a great Google Nexus One (HTC) (not from Vodafoney) and to get it to send and receive SMS/MMS I have to set it to GSM/CDMA (second generation). Okay, it is Google's programming blunders (in Android Froyo) that means standard messaging tries to send too big an image and so I have to use CHOMP or HANDCENT (I prefer the latter, free from MARKET) which automatically resizes the image to 300kb which Vodafoney will send/receive.
I complained to Vodafoney from my account page with them, and have yet to receive a reply. In anger I complained to the Telecommunications Ombudsman whose office is taking up the matter with the carrier. Also see the last two pages in The Australian Financial Review (7 January 2011) concerning the company and the lack of action by the ACCC. It makes for interesting reading."
Okay ... next question: how to change the preferred network type to the second generation GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)? On my Nexus One, I dial *#*#4636#*#* and then click on Phone. Go down to 'Set preferred network type' to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). Also set the SMSC to Vodafone AU by entering +61415011501. Then back out. That will get SMS working. But if you want to use MMS to send and receive images, there is one more step ... go to MARKET and install HANDCENT. In the setting, make sure you use the image size 300kb. So when you send a PXT, HANDCENT will resize the image to what Vodafoney (unlike US carriers who send larger images) will cope with.
You are now in business ... but still paying for third generation services (like speed) and getting a second generation service. Fear not, Vodafone will fix the issue. No, I do not work for the buggers ... just a user who never gives up!

the incredible is on the verizon network and i am on Tmobile

This is very likely nothing to do with android, but an issue between carriers since Verizon is cdma and t-mobile is hsdpa now.
Can you test with any other friends and/or carriers etc?

ahh I have the same issue but I have a mytouch 3g I wonder what the issue is... I can send to at&t no problem

force connect to another network?

Situation: The place I go skydiving at is really rural. My service goes in and out, but is more out than in. Is there any way possible to force a connection to the AT&T network that's out there? When I try, I get the message "Your SIM card does not allow this" or whatever it says. I don't wanna drop my T Mobile service, as I've had them since '02 and they've been great to me. But I'm at wit's end with this no service thing every weekend when I jump =/
Thanks in advance
~Lania
lol.... no not unless you can somehow get ATT to allow T-Mo sims.... and hell has a better chance of freezing over..... only option i can think of is grab an ATT ppd sim.... either do the hack to install 2 sims (requires pretty severe physical modification to the phone) or simply remove your T-mo Sim and insert your ATT sim....
you ARE using google voice arent you? in that case you can have all incoming calls ring both numbers, seeing as you should only have one registered on a network at a time....
welcome to the only reason i ever even think of dropping my T-Mo service.... and ive had them since before they were called T-Mobile... (powertel, i think.....)
No, I don't use Google voice. Don't you have to have an invite for that?
Anyway, it's not that big a deal I guess...My service has been gettin a lil better the more I go out there. Last weekend if I put my butt up against the hanger door, I got signal lol My contract is up next August. Prob switch to Verizon then unless T Mobile gets somethin done with the quickness about their service coverage.
you can have an invite sent to you by someone who has it, or you can request an invite off the google voice page it's self, it just takes about a week to get the invite if you request thru GV site... id HIGHLY reccomend getting one, all kinds of cool stuff can be done, including (but not limited too) Cheap international rates (.02 per min to landlines almost anywhere), totally unlimited calling over SIP (this ones pretty tricky to setup), visual and transcribed voice mails, caller screening, call routing (inbound).
if WiFi is available where your having signal issues then a SIP solution through GV, a SIP provider, SIPSorcery, and PBXes.org could give you access to phone calls (inbound and outbound, to/from you GV number)
its a rough setup (took me several tries, a couple days, and a couple shots to finally get right, and im nowhere near a novice) but if thats what would solve your problem grab a copy of SIPDroid (off the google code page, not the market), a GV invite, a PBXes account, a SIPSorcery account (all of the preceding are free services). A SIP provider will also be nessicary (some are free and some arent, i use SIPGate, which is free the way i use it/ have it set up).
look around on google for some tutorials (id link to one, but none were complete, or were old, i had to piece the info together from several tutorials, the SIPDroid page, PBXes help pages, and some common sense)
I'll look into it
worst case it'll allow you to still use your G1 for calls on Wifi over SIP after you change service providers (and phones) if you dont grab another android (or even if you do for that matter, with the proper setup ofcourse)...

[Q] How to send Chinese SMS

Hey all, I own a G1 on tmobile's network. I've been trying to send SMS in Chinese, but when I send them, the recipient only gets ***** instead of Chinese characters. For example, if I send 你好, they would get **. I did some research, and eventually found out that it has something to do with unicode support. I installed Handcent, which says it has unicode support but the same problem is present. Does anyone know how to make it work?
Thanks
EDIT: Apparently, if I send it to others on T-Mobile's network, it displays fine, but if I send to a different network, then it becomes stars.
I think that everyone you send it to has to have it supported on their phone. Not 100% sure though... Hope this helps.
Taylor
The person I sent to has an iPhone, and was able to send something in Chinese back to me, and I received it fine. When I contacted T-Mobile about this, they gave me some BS about how other carriers (such as AT&T and Verizon) do not have the right encoders for T-Mobile's unicode texts or something.
That's a known issue with Tmobile, they just have to blame it on any and everything else they can. it's the only network that you can't send any foreign language from it to another network. very frustrating. the last thing I got when I called them (and after ruling out everything else possible) is "it's a known issue, we are working on it" but it's been like this for years.
CDMA does not support Chinese SMS
As far as I know all CDMA providers in North America does not support Chinese at all! It is their system, not the phone. My wife have a Palm Treo 700p(CDMA) & I have a Palm 680(GSM). I can sent & receive Chinese, she can sent but turns out garbage on the other side.

sorry, but the Galaxy S6 + TMobile = Death

i have had nothing but bad luck with my brand new s6 on tmobile.
the main issue:
outgoing sms messages take at least 45 seconds to either get marked as send, or fail. when the fail, they are actually being sent. when they send, they send twice. 30% of the texts i send from my phone and to my phone do not make it to their destination at all.
fixes i have tried:
disabling volte, disabling wifi calling, switching back to stock messaging, factory resetting
tmobile support swore that a new sim card would fix the issue. it did not.
then support guaranteed me that a factory reset would fix the issue. against my better judgment, i reset the device. naturally, this made it worse; when i turn my phone on now i have zero bars of service for at least 5 minutes. literally no service. i am in nyc and normally have 5 bars of LTE.
nobody will recognize that this is actually a problem with tmobile, yet when i google "tmobile can't text over wifi" i get pages and pages of people with the exact same issue over years. reading through those threads there is no solution because tmobile support closes every one of them after 36 hours of inactivity, assuming the problem has been solved. what the **** kind of customer support is this?
texting is my primary form of communication and i am unable to use it. this is unacceptable behavior for any phone, let alone a brand new $700 super-hyped phone. i was on verizon for ten years and it never lost a single text. it's worth noting that there were similar issues with my last phone, an s4.
is nobody else having these issues?

I have the S6 on T-Mobile. I can text just fine using the stock app. Both SMS and MMS. Play with your APN settings, OR, use textra SMS. There is an option under MMS specifically for sending MMS while using wifi on T-Mobile.

When i left Verizon a few years ago for t-mobile, i had had plenty of texts not making it to their destination, so trust me, verizon is not perfect. (they should be though with the amount that they charge)
Try using IP v6 in your settings...
Then try IP v4 in your settings
Then try IP v4 / v6 in your settings and see if that helps with
Native texting App text to yourself to test.
Restart each change of APN.

Use to happen to me at least once a month on Verizon. T-Mobile hasn't lost one text for me yet. I keep asking myself why I stayed with big red for so long.
Reflash the original firmware - wipe everything start over. My GS6 works fine for me

IPv6 is what newer phones are coming preset with as opposed to IPv4 since that is what is correct going forward, per T-Mobile.

still waiting on my replacement device, but here's an interesting thing i realized today: this problem only occurs in my apartment. BUT i am not connected to wifi (it's turned off and i told android to forget my home network), and i'm on a 9th floor apartment with no other buildings around me. i've never had reception issues in the past here...this doesn't make sense to me at all
I'm using a T-mobile S6 since April 10th. I use Textra also over WiFi with 0 issues. All sms and mms come and go without issue.

Same, guess we're fortunate lol. I haven't seen or heard any text related issue specific to the S6, I know MMS is sometimes wonky with T-Mobile while connected to WiFi

[Q] iPhone to G4 MMS Issues

Wondering if anyone else has run into this issue. My girlfriend recently left Verizon (on iPhone 5) and took her number to T-Mobile. She decided to buy the LG G4 (I have the G3 on Verizon and she really liked it) but is having issues with receiving picture or group messages from other iPhones. I can message her fine, and I don't have any issues receiving these messages on my G3 (on Verizon). If we are on the same thread, sometimes she won't get the message until I or another android user responds to it.
When she left Verizon they told her that iPhone users would have to turn iMessage off & on in order for it to work, but that has led to mixed results. She will get a few group messages or picture messages from certain recipients but inevitably will end up missing another one (her texting app will show "New MMS Message" and a download button, but pressing that doesn't do anything). She's contacted T-Mobile but all they ever say is to reboot her phone, or clear the Messaging app data. Generally this fixes it temporarily, but unable to fix completely.
Since I'm unfamiliar with T-Mobile and the G4, I was wondering if anyone can share their experiences with this? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks!

If she's getting the MMS notification, then it's not related to iMessage. How long has it been since she switched? I believe some messages might get routed to the wrong carrier for a while.
I have been with T-Mobile for a long time and have not had MMS issues with any of the phones I have used. I have a G4 at the moment and MMS work fine with everyone (including iOS users). Group messaging can be tricky when dealing with iPhones though, I have missed some messages before, I get no notification, they're just lost. If the message is not being downloaded, I would make sure the APN settings are correct on her G4.
She can also try a different SMS app. I use Textra and it lets you manually configure an APN if the system one is having issues.

Thanks. I actually just recommended she try Textra and it seems to be holding up for now. As far as APN settings go, where is the most reliable place to find the correct ones? I see them posted all over the internet but am not sure what is new/legitimate. Would T-Mobile be able to provide them?

Yes, T-Mobile should be able to provide them, but her phone should already have the right ones, especially if it's a T-Mobile branded device.
Mine is (on my T-Mobile branded G4)
T-Mobile LTE
APN fast.t-mobile.com
MMSC http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN type default, supl, mms
APN protocol IPV6

There are a lot of threads about this, the TMo G4 has issues downloading MMS for some reason. In group chats that are MMS it's even worse. I finally gave up on the G4 because it loses too many messages and can't download half the ones that it does get.

Ah yes! The Wi-Fi calling fix? That can solve some issues when using Textra if you use WiFi calling, but the stock app should take care of that.
I haven't had any issues with group MMS, so I wonder if those that are having them are on WiFi and with WiFi calling enabled when they have these issues.
I don't know if it helps with WiFi calling or not! But it fixed my MMS sending and receiving problem!

Question Auto update breaks my ability to make calls/text when I enable WiFi for the first time after factory reset. Anyway to disable this?

I've had an ongoing battle with my ability to make calls/text with this device, I initially thought it was at the carriers end but I was perplexed because my SIM works fine in other devices and they are unable to find anything wrong.
Last night I opted to try a full factory reset, I had already done multiple prior in an effort to find a resolution but this time I opted to do it without immediately connecting my phone to WiFi during the setup portion. What I found was two things, all the texts that had failed to come in did and my talk and text was now completely usable. Also the ZTE Locker, which is ZTEs embedded lockscreen wallpaper app was now functioning again. Prior to this it had stopped working and was stuck on one static image (it is suppose to change the lockscreen wallpaper every time you turn on the screen on your device and the images update everyday over Wifi). Unfortunately as soon as I connect my phone to WiFi without any notification I believe the phone does some form of update as within seconds my phones ability to make calls/text breaks along with the ZTE locker. I have attempted to disable any auto updates under the system updates in settings before connecting to Wifi, but unfortunately that does not work as it does not appear to be a full on OS change. Is there any way to disable any updates that are not manually approved when I connect to Wifi? I have reached out to ZTE support and they have escalated the issue to their senior R&D team. However I don't want to wait until a new update before I can have a functioning phone.
Just as a note, the issue appears to be particular to 3G calls (although I am not sure why I am failing to receive some texts). In Canada our carriers do not enable VoLTE with phones that are pretty much not Samsung/Apple or have been bought directly from them. Because of this any out of market phones like One Plus and ZTE that are unlocked and compatible only get calling through 3G, which is normally fine. I can get VoLTE briefly if I put my SIM in a carrier approved phone and switch it to my ZTE and it appears to work (until my carrier recognizes the IMEI and blocks it). So this may be why not everyone is experiencing this issue (if they have VoLTE). Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated as I am at my wits end.
I'm in the USA and have had zero issues on T-Mobile, but when I got the phone I had to manually put in the T-Mobile APN settings to make sure everything liked texts and data worked correctly. I have many T-Mobile devices so I know exactly how to set the APN. Are you sure that your APN is set correctly for the network you are on? I know that most phones set the APN according to the sim card you insert, but I have found many Chinese phones that DON'T. Once I set it manually that usually solves all the problems.
Also, how did you reach out to ZTE support? I'm trying to get ahold of them to give them feedback to DISABLE the obnoxiously loud camera shutter sound in the next software update, but aside from spamming their Facebook page, I don't know how to get ahold of them.
Thanks for the reply, oddly there is no option on my Axon Ultra to add APN settings. Only the default ones are available, although they do look to be correct for the most part I would love trying to add them manually. Someone in another forum who was also having issues (with another Canadian carrier) spoke with a rep and they stated that they would be releasing an update shortly with the manual APN option. My data and MMS appear to be working fine however so I am not too optimistic that will be the fix. You can contact ZTE on their website, if you go to their contact page you will see a little pop on the bottom right hand corner for chat. In reality it is mostly a messaging service as it never appears to be actually online but they do appear to be respond somewhat promptly to message sent via email. Just as a heads up, I don't recall specifically where I think it was a review but I do believe they have made a statement already saying they will patch out the loud shutter sound.
May I ask if your phone works fine with VoLTE disabled? Unfortunately since all non carrier approved devices are denied VoLTE in Canada my main experience has been with 3G calls failing.
I'm in Finland. Having so much problems with call's that i can't use the phone. Problems answering call's and phone also keeps cutting call's. I sent mail to Zte support. Probably have to wait for update and hope for the best.
Hey, they released an update today. It now allows you to input your own APN settings manually. Look up your carriers and add your own. Even though the automated ones were right making my own manual ones has fixed the issue for me it seems.
