Hey all, I own a G1 on tmobile's network. I've been trying to send SMS in Chinese, but when I send them, the recipient only gets ***** instead of Chinese characters. For example, if I send 你好, they would get **. I did some research, and eventually found out that it has something to do with unicode support. I installed Handcent, which says it has unicode support but the same problem is present. Does anyone know how to make it work?
Thanks
EDIT: Apparently, if I send it to others on T-Mobile's network, it displays fine, but if I send to a different network, then it becomes stars.
I think that everyone you send it to has to have it supported on their phone. Not 100% sure though... Hope this helps.
Taylor
The person I sent to has an iPhone, and was able to send something in Chinese back to me, and I received it fine. When I contacted T-Mobile about this, they gave me some BS about how other carriers (such as AT&T and Verizon) do not have the right encoders for T-Mobile's unicode texts or something.
That's a known issue with Tmobile, they just have to blame it on any and everything else they can. it's the only network that you can't send any foreign language from it to another network. very frustrating. the last thing I got when I called them (and after ruling out everything else possible) is "it's a known issue, we are working on it" but it's been like this for years.
CDMA does not support Chinese SMS
As far as I know all CDMA providers in North America does not support Chinese at all! It is their system, not the phone. My wife have a Palm Treo 700p(CDMA) & I have a Palm 680(GSM). I can sent & receive Chinese, she can sent but turns out garbage on the other side.

I Have a Tilt flashed with HTC 6.1 and (I think, but haven't tested) sim unlocked (with the kaiser sim unlocker tool). I am using it on AT&T. I don't use text messaging that often so it hasn't bothered me too much, but all my AT&T friends can send me MMS (I don't recall if they've sent me any SMS). However, one of my Verizon friends sent me a few text messages and (when he finally called) asked me why I didn't respond. I told him I didn't receive the messages. I searched for "kaiser can't receive sms from other carrier" and didn't find anything helpful. I hope I'm not missing something obvious. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
If you've ported your number in from another carrier, you'll need to contact tech support to have them update your phone number.
If you're not able to receive a text from one particular person, that could be something different.
Oh thanks I did port my number from Verizon. Who should I call Verizon or AT&T?
I would call AT&T Customer Care and have them verify that there are no weird restrictions on your account related to SMS messaging.
As an example, a friend of mine who did not wish to receive SMS messages on his Verizon phone was able to call them and have all external messages blocked. But he was told there was no way to prevent other Verizon phones from sending him texts.
I would also have AT&T verify that your Test Message Service Center number is correct on your Tilt.
Hey everyone,
I face a SMS sending problem. I'm texting to Australia quite often and I'm (different to my t-mobile button above) with E-Plus. A long time me and my partner down under had no trouble sending/receiving text messages. But lately only half my texts get through.
We had a problem earlier this year when she was with Optus. All of a sudden my messages did not get through anymore. All of them. Then she changed to Vodafone and it seemed to work. But E-Plus (I'm actually with MedionMobile, just using E-Plus network) made their messages cheaper and now I face this problem!
It's really anoying. Now -
when I have such a problem - does it have anything to do with my Radio / Rom installed on the phone? Or is this just a network fault?
Would changing to Vodafone solve this problem since Vodafone Germany and Vodafone Australia are partner networks?
It's just that E-Plus is so much cheaper (1/3 of the price for a SMS!)
Please try to help me!
Is your operator billing you for the txts? If so, you can be sure they're transferred to your operators server correctly and your phone's alright. But you probably won't be able to get a deeper insight into what happens after that- if and where your txts are lost....
Changing networks MIGHT help, but don't count on it.
You might wanna try sending your txts using an internet-based service?! just to check... and, btw, that might be cheaper, too. I remember seeing a tool that allows you to send txts via internet-based services from your xperia using your data connection. i just can't seem to find it right now.
first: thanks for your help!
My operator is billing me for the text messages, yes. So they send it correctly. I even tried out to get a confirmation for sent items, you know? I always get the message that it has been delivered. But then she does not get the message...
I tried out to send messages from two of my class mates and from my mums phone as well as from my dads phone. Their messages all get through...
I think I know what you mean with internet based SMS sending. Innosend is such a service, huh?
But items sent throught that service do not get stored in my SMS store...But I will try it out, I guess. As well as I try a Vodafone SimCard.
I hope there is nothin wrong with my phone...
Out of interest, what phone does your partner have?
Oh, I think you got me there. Long time it was a Sony Ericsson...older one. But she got a new one two weeks ago or so. But I don't think it's her phone because the fault occured on both, her old and her new phone. I'll write it in here as soon as I know...
Ah ok cool. The reason I was asking: When I got my Xperia I soon realised that my gf was only getting around half the texts I was sending. It drove me crazy as nothing seemed to fix it - I got my phone replaced, she got hers replaced, we both got new SIMs. Just like you, the texts were showing up on bills, and O2 could see them going through their message centre, so they could not identify the problem.
Eventually I figured it out, my gf did not receive my messages when they were longer than a single message. Anything more and it simply did not show up on her phone (LG Renoir), but still seemed to send successfully and show up on my bill. I then realised that the same thing happened when sending long texts to my friend (also an LG, but a Viewty). They can both get long messages from other people, just not me, so I think there must be some sort of incompatibility between the Brands/softwares.
Probably of no help to you really, but maybe you send long messages too?
No, it's fine since I experience such a thing on my own now. Thanks for sharing! I'm gonna ask her what kind of phone she uses now. Today I removed the SIM Card from my phone and replaced it. The Xperia did a new setup on my network and afterwards my 2 sent messages came through. Maybe I just had to do that because I flashed a new Rom and later a new Radio without renewing my network options...
As you, I do not have a clue where the problem is...But also takin my mums T-Mobile Sim Card in my phone she got all messages. I believe it's the operator...I keep you guys updated when I have my Vodafone card or if it should work normally now...
Thanks for your help. Always appreciated!
edit:yes, I experienced that longer messages have less chance to get through. Sometimes they are messed up or just the first part (first 160 characters) get through...hmm
I'm asking this question on behalf of my friend. He downloaded the Korean IME to his Captivate, and has no problem typing or sending texts in Korean. The problem that he's having is he can't receive any Korean texts. All he gets are ****** instead of the written characters.
When he changes to locale to Korean the texts still come in as ******. Any idea what's happening? My other friend's Vibrant has no problem receiving Korean Text. I thought it was weird that the Captivate couldn't.

Mine is fine. I text with my bro/friends all the time in korean and I receive them perfectly. Is his phone rooted? Maybe he can try going back to stock via odin.
Is his capticvate and his friends all on at&t network?
at&t phones can send and recieve each others while for outside networks we can send ours but we cant recieve theirs... i know it sucks but thats what it is.
i use kakaotalk for those people outside my network. its a program you can use to text pictures and even videos.
any smartphone and iphone can use it to text each other in korean.
just a suggestion and if you are running low on text messages you can use it also since it uses data.
just a thought and im not promoting this app but telling you what i use. ^^ GL
sorry to bump this all thread but im having this issue now. rooted and installeg d congnition4.1 korean is selectable in locale languages
but same as op i can send korean text but recieve it only as*****
Not sure if it would work, but try installing 'MoreLocale 2' from the Market and trying it that way. I use Korean often as well, but never had a problem like this...
If you are on ATT, then its an ATT issue. Something weird about the way it processes messages or something.
thanks, for the replies. got a friend to send me an mms were both on at&T doesnt seem ot have a problem. i guess its jsut from other carriers - at&t. but for the korean text still no solution yet .. il keep reading around .thanks for the replies
I dont know if i am the only one with this issue but between my friends who have incredibles and me having a nexus one, they cannot recieve my pictures but i can recieve the ones the send me.

You do not state what carrier you use, but we are having a terrible time with Vodafone and Android not sending receiving SMS/MMS. I posted this on both Vodafail.com and Whirlpool.net.au, and you may find your answer towards the bottom of the post:
"I pay for a third generation data service W-CDMA (UTMS) which Vodafoney started to introduce as far back as 2004. I have a great Google Nexus One (HTC) (not from Vodafoney) and to get it to send and receive SMS/MMS I have to set it to GSM/CDMA (second generation). Okay, it is Google's programming blunders (in Android Froyo) that means standard messaging tries to send too big an image and so I have to use CHOMP or HANDCENT (I prefer the latter, free from MARKET) which automatically resizes the image to 300kb which Vodafoney will send/receive.
I complained to Vodafoney from my account page with them, and have yet to receive a reply. In anger I complained to the Telecommunications Ombudsman whose office is taking up the matter with the carrier. Also see the last two pages in The Australian Financial Review (7 January 2011) concerning the company and the lack of action by the ACCC. It makes for interesting reading."
Okay ... next question: how to change the preferred network type to the second generation GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)? On my Nexus One, I dial *#*#4636#*#* and then click on Phone. Go down to 'Set preferred network type' to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). Also set the SMSC to Vodafone AU by entering +61415011501. Then back out. That will get SMS working. But if you want to use MMS to send and receive images, there is one more step ... go to MARKET and install HANDCENT. In the setting, make sure you use the image size 300kb. So when you send a PXT, HANDCENT will resize the image to what Vodafoney (unlike US carriers who send larger images) will cope with.
You are now in business ... but still paying for third generation services (like speed) and getting a second generation service. Fear not, Vodafone will fix the issue. No, I do not work for the buggers ... just a user who never gives up!
the incredible is on the verizon network and i am on Tmobile
This is very likely nothing to do with android, but an issue between carriers since Verizon is cdma and t-mobile is hsdpa now.
Can you test with any other friends and/or carriers etc?
ahh I have the same issue but I have a mytouch 3g I wonder what the issue is... I can send to at&t no problem
I have a Z3C on At&t network that was recently sent to Sony for repairs. While it was being repaired I had my number ported over to a windows phone, and Sony also updated me to 5.0 while they had it.
Now, whenever I send a text to a phone on ANOTHER carrier that has a .com in it, the text never gets delivered. I can send myself, and other At&t phones the same text and it goes through just fine. For example, I've been sending "testing airbnb.com" to several people. No one gets it unless they are on AT&T. I have tried the stock messaging app, and Textra and the results are the same. I'm inclined to think that something got messed up on the AT&T side when they reactivated my phone from the windows phone, but I don't know for sure.
Does anyone know of anything that can cause this problem?
thanks.
I'm looking for volunteers. If you have AT&T, try sending a text with airbnb.com or anything like that to someone you know who is on either t mobile or Verizon, then see if they got it. I've found two phones so far that it's not working. I know it USED to work.. I don't know if it's a carrier issue or lollipop issue yet.
