[Q] com.android.phone - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung GT-I9000 and a few days after I started using it it kept crashing and giving me the "com.android.phone force close" message, after which I would get a notification telling me that I have lost my signal, etc. Soon afterwards everything would be back to normal, only for it to crash again a few minutes later.
First I changed my Network Settings to only use GSM, as I figured that my 3G coverage might just be crap. This seemed to work fairly well, but after a week or 2 when I changed it back to Auto (i.e. GSM or WCDMA) it started crashing again. After that it just kept crashing no matter what mode it was in.
I read in another forum that getting a newer sim card might help. While it did work for a friend of mine, my phone is crashing even more after I got my new sim card.
I suspect it is a network problem, as it never crashes in flight mode or when I put a "dead" sim card in.
I have not rooted nor done anything else to my phone, so it's still running on 2.1, etc.
Anyone have any ideas? I am at a complete loss.

Try backing up data then a factory wipe and reset .
jje

I tried that before getting a new sim. Will try it again though!

I had this same problem. Factory reset plus install of new darky rom 8.0 fixed the problems.. I did have signal problems but that has been addressed already.

Ok, so I've had my "new" reset running faultlessly for a few hours now. Hoping for the best! Definitely upgrading to Darky soon though!
Many thanks! =D

"no service" No voice...but Data working sporatically??

For the last few hours my G1 has been showing me the X above the bars.
Ive tried restoring an old image...tried data wipe/reset.
All end up the same.
Selecting my network (TMOBILE) has been an adventure.
One of the following occurs
The menu itself gets stuck on airplane mode.
sim card not authorized on network
cannot connect to network
Ive rebooted numerous times even when bars/data look like theyre back , Ill make a call and it will drop the call, then right back to the X.
What compounds the oddity is that even with the X Ive gotten data to work for the most part. Sometimes it will sometimes it wont. Im extremely confused if this is my SIM card or the G1 itself.
Cus Serv online said to go to a Tmo store for a new sim. But my schedule may not allow that until Fri. I dont have any other sims or phones to swap and try either.
Any clues what this could be ?
G1/TMo/Offical Tmo Donut ROM from this forum.
Crazy data transfers could be browser cache? Very odd. I would go with what customer service says on this one.
Reflash radio
Just reflash the radio - get the official one from HTC developer site or whereever you can find it and reflash it using recovery ( I hope you have recovery 1.4 or Amon-ra recovery). You can try to take out your SIM and examine it closely, and maybe clean it a little. Just take it out and put it back. Then reflash radio and see if tat works.
Stopped short of flashing the radio.
I wiped and installed Cyn 4.19999 same issue. Rebooted , wiped..then reception came back.
Maybe it was ROM Im thinking ? Wiped restored my previous save (TMO ROM))and everythings working again except for Picmail.((which has been a reoccuring problem)).
Tmo says to go pick up a new Sim card to see if it helps. I guess theres no harm in doing that right ?
Ive never flashed the radio since Cyn and The Tmo ROM dont require it. So its still on stock. Would the pic mail being sproatic before and after this be a Radio problem as well ?

What do you mean by "Picmail"? Do you mean MMS or is that an app?

Yes , PicMail=MMS
Its been buggy for me for awhile.
Im wondering if all this is some wonky Simcard.
Dont stress it. It happened to me yesturday for about a couple of hours. I think TMOB is workin out some signal issues. I had the same exact problem along with 10 of my fellow network friends. No rom bugs or flash fcuk ups. It'll restore it self normally unless you truely did it to your self while flashing.
Could very well be.
Thanks Garz.

Nexus one not reconnecting to mobile network

My N1 will not reconnect to a mobile network if it has been sitting for a few hours in a no-coverage area, such as a building. I cannot get it to reconnect, even after refreshing the network search. This action only leaves me with no result or a message saying that there was an error in searching or connecting to mobile networks. The only solution is to restart the phone. Every time I try to turn the phone off after this error has occurred, the shutdown sequence hangs until either I become frustrated and do a battery pull, or it automatically restarts and do a battery pull, or it automatically restarts itself. Furthermore, the phone used to give me an error notification saying that the phone does not have carrier service. Now, it does not. Furthermore, the phone used to give me an error notification saying that the phone does not.
I tried uninstalling all my programs and nothing has worked for me. I've also tried toggling the airplane mode to no avail.
I'm considering putting on the cyanogen ROM to see if it would fix this error, but I am hesitant to void my warranty. It's a pretty serious problem as I'm very frequently in a building where I don't get service. It's quite frustrating to have to wait to reconnect to a mobile network once I leave the building and hope that the error didn't occur or have to do a battery pull every time I realize that the phone simply won't reconnect.
Can anyone suggest any solutions?
Mod it. What have you got to lose? Your overall performance will increase. The radio signal may even improve. Your call.

thanks for the tip. i've been thinking about it. it's the warranty i don't want to lose. eh i'll keep thinking about it.
this phone sucks. it's glitchy, can be sluggish. iphone got dumbed down but at least its functions work.
meh
Hey!
You dont want to lose your warranty, then use it!
Your phone seems to be faulty...
My phone is experiencing the same problem as of yesterday. Won't connect. Wonder if it's a T-Mobile issue.

Its only glitchy coz you have stock rom
Cyanogen is really stable and adds alot of features / functionality.
Fair enough you dont want to lose warranty but i remember in the general thread that lots of hardware failures and others can still fix your n1 under warranty even though they unlocked the bootloader.
I too have this problem, hopefully the 2.2 update will fix the problems.
Can you guys confirm if its android or your service provider thats causing this...

I have the same problem and it's starting to bother me a lot because my car is parked in a garage with no coverage. My in-car BT then becomes useless as my phone won't reconnect to the network once I exit the garage
I just called Google support 10 mins ago about this and they went through normal protocol to reset to factory settings. They then called Tmo and let them know what the issue was while I was still on the phone. Tmo unregistered my phone from the network while my battery was taken out of my phone and then reregistered my phone to the network. Tmo asked me to monitor this for a few days and call them directly (not Google) if the issue persists. They will then elevate this to a higher level because they feel this would be a network problem, and not a hardware issue.
Hope this helps! Please post what you have tried to solve the problem!

^ it worked! my phone reconnects to the cellular network after what Google/Tmo did for me on the phone!
I haven't tried calling tmobile, but it is NOT something that will be fixed by hopping on cyanogen's rom. I've been rooted on cyanogen's rom for quite some time and this problem still exists on my n1 which is SUPER annoying. I will try calling tmobile to see if they can fix it on their side, but rooting is not the fix here.
I had the same issue. I used anycut and phone info shortcut and changed the wireless default setting to us and it totally fixed the problem. Have not had that issue again.

I resolved this by going to the T-Mobile store where they replaced my SIM card. They made a copy to a new SIM card, installed it and everything works fine.
For the record symptoms included:
* "Error while searching for network" message
* Found networks but said "your SIM card is not authorized for this network" when connecting
* Network listed as "No service" or "Emergency calls only | T-Mobile"
I get this too with an at&t phone.
Have asked for a replacement device from HTC (since the reception is crappy to begin with).
I also have audio quality problems when reception is only 1-2 bars.
Will see if the new phone is better.
I had this problem regularly. It hasn't happened once since I upgraded to Froyo, so I think it has been fixed in that release.
sometimes have this too, i fix it by going to the settings > wireless > mobile networks > APN. at first i deleted and retyped my password in the selected APN, now i just click my network in the APN settings, don't change anything and leave. It immediately reconnects after that.
edit: and i have stock froyo & live in belgium.
I got a new, replacement phone from HTC today.
This new phone has a BIG PROBLEM with this issue.
Even if I am only without reception for a couple of seconds (go through the garage, etc.) it will not connect to any network until I reboot.
My old phone would only experience this problem maybe 25-35% of the time.
Very, very annoying!!!

I had similar issues and called tmobile support. I was first linked to Google support. They went through the similar process as described by in the first page. (#*#*4636*#*# select USA band etc). While I was on hold, they called t mobile tech support and had them reset network connection and tried to get me onto a different tower etc.
Tmobile support stated that my sim card (had for about 2 years) was the cause of the issue as they can't handle smartphones as well as their new sim cards. They also said the new sim should improve reception and connection stability (Don't see how a new sim could do this but what do I know?). Moreover, they noted my account and told me to go into the nearest store for a new sim card. Went into the nearest tmobile store told them the issue, they pulled up my account and gave me a new sim. Took less then 5 minutes and I have not had the issue with staying connected to the tmobile network.
I will update this after a few days to see if I still have the issue.
I have the same problems that i cannot connect to network here in germany. first i think it was my sim card, but befor i had another provider (E-Plus) where i had the same problems with reconnecting to network. and one day my eplus sim card is broken so i had to buy a new one by t-mobile. i have tried a lot of roms from here (cyanogen/ 5.0.7 /5.0.8T5 Kangorama rodriquezstyle and leofroyo) everyone seems to have the same problems with reconnecting to network. i hope im not alone with my problems and someone can help.
hmm...
Count me as another. I just upgraded to froyo and it went beserk. Had no service for a while. It would only come on after constantly tapping "select network automatically" until it kicked me out of the menu. It started getting better but kept kicking me out of 3g. I set it to stay always on 3g and it seems to be better... still I'm going to call tmobile and see if I can get a new sim as well.
Thanks for the info guys!

[Q] No data after official froyo update

so I successfully updated to froyo, after it was done I updated all my apps using 3g. I then rooted my phone using SuperOneClick. after that, I didn't notice any issues, so I used OCLF, after it rebooted from doing the lag fix, I now have no data. I uninstalled the lag fix AND unroted my phone just to try and back out of whatever I did, but it didn't work. I went to setting to try and view my mobile networks, I got an error that told me to insert my sim card. It was already in... So I took it out, put it back in and booted up to the same problems. My phone IS reading the sim card though, I can see all of my sim contacts in my address book, and wifi is working perfectly, I just can't connect to any cellular data. is there a way to fix this without flashing back to stock and reupdating? I would like to keep all the data I have on my phone.
Can you make calls? Or is it just 3g that's been effected?

I wasn't able to make calls either, anyway, after rebooting for the umpteenth time, it started working

[Q] Constant rebooting!!!!

Alright guys, I've had my Nexus One for about a week. It's running stock 2.3.4, but had same problem on 2.1 stock. If I try to do anything on my phone it does the damn reboot. But only on cell service. If I'm on wifi, I can't make it crash, reboot, or anything. It only does it when not on wifi. It's never been rooted or anything. Sometimes I even have to pull battery to get phone back. I've searched everywhere......
does a full data wipe solve your problem? //but whatever backup first before ever trying this.
Have you tried a new SIM card?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203937
I have done several full wipes, cleared cache and data. Still same problem. My sim card is only a couple weeks old, and worked fine in my previous phone.
Stopped by AT&T and got a new sim card. Didn't change problem at all.

Have you been able to pull a log cat?
Been doing all kinds of trial and error. If sim card isn't in phone, no reboots at all. WTF??

No Mobile Data Connection

I'm not sure if it's just a faulty device or what. When i first got the phone, I rooted it with success, then the stock weather app and my mobile data started not to work. The problem eventually fixed itself, but it seems to have happened again, out of the blue. I've tried everything from calling MetroPCS, to doing a fresh install, a fresh flash of both a stock and custom ROM. I even tried manually entering the APN information with no luck. The 4G LTE symbol is there, I can make and receive texts and calls and the wifi works with no issues. Could it maybe just need some sort of system update? If anyone out there has had this problem and/or has a solution for it, I'd love if you would share ti with me. I'm getting a little irritated paying for data I can't use.
