I have a very dumb question for you guys. Do i have to downgrade to eclair everytime i need to update to the new froyo version? Coz its really confusing like which pit file i need to flash for different type froyo. And what about single files and three files? My phone was doin fine evrytime i upgrade to new froyo without downgrading to eclair. But yesterday after flashing the new i9000dxjpe, my phone just showing sgs i9000 galaxy s. What did i do wrong? For examples do i need to downgrade to jm8 if i want to upgrade my froyo from jpa to jpe? Please guys help me on this. Coz its killing me just to find the ultimate froyo firmware.
Thx God Speed

No. If you use ODIN it should work without downgrading. At least it does for me.

Use the registry hack found here to get kies to do the upgrade. Remove the lagfix before flashing

As it was mentioned in other threads, yes you have to. I'm not sure though if it applies to all of plethora of lag fixes out there, but it is always a gooooooood idea to remove modifications before trying to do something official with you phone, better to be on the safe side.
As for the JM5 I don't know but I suspect that if Kies doesn't recognize that firmware it will not let you do anything, i.e. if you flashed ROM from other region. But thats only a guess.
Cheers.
EDIT: Bah I've been forestalled :F

[Q] Any good Roms or Themes available for JL2 FroYo - Bell Mobility Canada?

Hi All,
Does anyone know of any roms or themes that have been made specifically for the JL2 Froyo Firmware for Bell Mobility in Canada?
There are the Darky ROM and the DOC's ROM
i personally like more the DOC's ROM
Hi AllGamer,
Thanks for the info. Dumb question perhaps but how do I flash the rom to my phone exactly? I cant seem to get it re-rooted so I cant do the update zip and I am STILL scared to use ODIN for anything.
Any ideas? Please advise...

I know that you asked for JL2 but here's a thread on Bell and JPY. It's what got me started and I ended up flashing seeARMS' JPY.

Even with a rooted phone (SuperOneClick will do JL2 and can be found in the i9000 Dev forum), you're still stick unless you fix your recovery (which requires you to use ODIN to do so). You can get back to 2e recovery by flashing a custom kernel (e.g. SpeedMod found in the i9000 Dev section) or an older stock firmware (you can find JH2 at http://samfirmware.com).
Read up on the Reference thread. It's one of the pinned threads in the General section and will give some help on how to use ODIN.
Thank You to all of you who have answered me. I will look into these solutions for rooting and Themes/Roms...

Yiannisthegreek...let me know if you were able to root with JL2 and how you did it. I am still running 2.1 with the fear that I will be unable to root once I make the upgrade to 2.2 JL2
Let me know if you were successful

JL2 is easily rooted with Super One Click or flashing a kernel that has a rooting option in CWM.

How to root and install lag-fix on android 2.2?

ive beeb trying to search the thread on how to make the samsung galaxy s less lag and i cant find it i updated my phone using kies im on froyo 2.2 now. saw some tutorials but only working on 2.1 for the rooting purposes can anyone show me the thread on how to root samsung galaxy s running on 2.2 and give me some apps to less the lag thanks very much....;
[Mod Edit] Title edited because it was misleading , this way this thread may be of help to others with similar questions.

oh this is simple. go to development thread and you should find a bunch of choices of Kernels. They mostly have Odin for you to download, then u can use Odin to flash a custom Kernel over your stock one. Then go to recovery and go to the advance options and Root your phone fromt here. All new Kernels are pretty awesome cuz they will root your phone for you and insteall superuser + busybox.

here's the easiest way to root your SGS..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
just make sure you follow the instructions:
You NEED to put your phone on USB Debugging mode
You NEED to install make sure the Android drivers for your phone are installed
Make sure you DO NOT mount your SD card.
If you still can't get something to run, try doing it in recovery mode
The easiest way to root+lagfix (especially if you're newer to this sort of stuff) is to install Voodoo.
It will automatically lag-fix your Galaxy S and then all you do is install "superuser" from the market and you've got root. Nice and simple.

Another option is to go to samfirmware.com and using ODIN instal I9000XWJS5. Full instructions are on site. The advantage of this is you get a good stable ROM, smoothness, fast, better battery life and there is no need for a lagfix - much safer.
Enjoy your SGS.
i downloaded z4root and get a little bit confuse of the temporary and permanent root can anyone explain me whats the difference thanks.

It means that your computer must have the correct drivers for you Galaxy S. You'll be connecting the phone to your computer, the computer needs drivers to recognize the phone.
Just install Samsung Kies, all the needed drivers will be installed as well.

Your best and easiest bet would probably be to install the Spedmod kernel, or a custom Tom. Realty all you have to do is go to the developement section.

Your device must be rooted to do that.
Please.. Don't just try anything without a thorough read. You might end up bricking your device.
First of all, I am not a fan of Lag fixes, some lag fix users had lost their internal memory because of it and if you use it you'll only have 600mb internal memory.
I suggest you to upgrade to a stock Froyo 2.2.1. It is faster than 2.2 and almost on par with LagFixed SGS. I'm currently using Froyo 2.2.1 XXJPY and it is very stable.
Search on the General section on how to upgrade to 2.2.1

Currently all froyo 2.2.1 is only for Europe Galaxy S. I installed mine via Kies Registry Hack. You can also install it using Odin.
I Swyped this on my Galaxy S

I'm sorry but the kies registry hacking is no longer working, Samsung already blocked the kies versions 1.5.3.10103.102 and lower. Here's the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835628
Your only option now is to wait for the official release on your country or Flash 2.2.1 via Odin, remember to backup before doing it coz it'll erase all your data.
Follow this thread on how to flash Froyo 2.2.1 I9000XWJS5

Hi guys
As the title states I'm looking to update my wifes phone.
Firstly Im not sure if there is supposed to be a search for update feature like on my Sensation but i cant find one on the phone.
Its still on 2.1 update 1 Eclair DVJH3
Can someone be kind enough to tell me how/where i should look to update the firmware to something more current?
Do i have to root and installed one of the ROMs here or can i update to GB somehow?
Many thanks

Looks like you are on Telstra??
If you are still on the stock ROM and want to stay on stock ROM just use Samsung Kies. No rooting required and does not void warranty

Hi Lexrsk
Yes its a Telstra branded phone.
It doesnt really matter if i put a custom ROM on it as work will give her a new phone if i stuff it up, no questions asked. Its just so slow at the moment.
She was set up on the cloud through work and one thing the cloud people asked her when trying to set up her email on the phone was "Is it a telstra phone?"
Im not sure if they use some sort of telstra program on the phone to assist with setting up email on her phone for use via the cloud. So i dont know if installing a new ROM could screw this up. Any ideas on this?
Thanks again
Hi Lex,
Just wanted to let you know I updated the phone using Kies. Downloads kept crashing but finally got it updated to Gingerbread from Eclair.
Phone was taking over 4mins to start up but now taking less than 50sec also working alot smoother.
Thanks again for the info. I had no idea about that software.
I've being in the same boat, but Kies tells me that my can't be updated the like the rest of the SGS's. Kies can be more of a pain at times.

I'd like to second that! There doesnt appear to be any repository containnig the stock SGS telstra branded firmware (all links I have found have expired). I lost my backup with a hard drive corruption and have been looking for this for a while. Much appreciated if you would share
If you're upgrading from 2.1 to 2.3, a new bootloader has to be flashed as well
