How to prevent book cover art from showing in Gallery - Nook Color General

Okay, so you open the built-in gallery app to view your pictures, but you see that it is littered by pixelated cover arts from the gazillion free books you have downloaded from B&N. So you think surely there is a menu option in this app to tell where to look for the pictures you want it to display. Well, unfortunately, there is none.
No need to fret, there is an easy fix (documented for some other devices on their respective forums). Here is how to do it for Nook. Basically, you place a file with the name ".nomedia" in the folders you want Gallery to ignore. Since I have a rooted nook with the Astro file manager installed, I will describe how to do it with Astro.
Open Astro and hit the home icon on the tool bar. Now hit the up icon on the tool bar and you will be placed in the root folder. Now open these folders: media, Digital Editions, Thumbnails. You will see two folders in Thumbnails - B&N Downloads and Digital Editions. Digital Editions has the cover arts for books sideloaded through Adobe Digital Editions PC App. Let's go into B&N Downloads. Open the folder Books in it. You will see all your B&N book cover arts here.
Pick a file from the list, preferably one of the smallest ones. Long press on it. Select Edit and then Copy from the popup menu. Now click the Edit button on Astro tool bar. Select paste. This will give you an option to rename it before saving. Name it .nomedia. Yes, the name starts with a period and nothing before that. Save it.
Now click the up icon from the tool bar to get back to Thumbnails folder. Open Digital Editions folder and do the same there to create a .nomedia file.
Reboot your nook and your Gallery should be rid of those pesky cover arts.

Just to make sure you are in the right folder, here is the folder structure (which Astro will display above its toolbar):
B&N thumbnails/book cover art folder:
/media/Digital Editions/Thumbnails/B&N Downloads/Books
Adobe thumbnails/book cover art folder:
/media/Digital Editions/Thumbnails/Digital Editions
I am on 1.0.1 version, so can't verify these locations exist for 1.0 users.

Thanks for this

Didn't work for me as I do not have the Digital Editions folder there. " B&N Downloads and Digital Editions." I have the B&N Downloads and My Files" and my nook is rooted but still version 1.0

Try the quickpic app, you can tell it to ignore or hide certain directories and it also loads much faster than the default gallery.

Ok, well, add the .nomedia file to whatever folder you do have that you want to block from the gallery.

Ghost Commander can make files, vs copying them... And the .nomedia affects all folders under the parent as well, so you could create the file in the /media/Digital Editions folder.
To see it actually change in most gallery apps, however, you'll need to reboot or force a media rescan.

HOW TO - Hide Certain Media Files from Music Player and Gallery (5/30/2009)

Have you ever been listening to your Britney Spears, Daft Punk or Tupac and suddenly you start hearing files that aren't music (i.e ringtones, notification sounds, etc.)? I find it pretty annoying that there is no current method to hide these files from the music player, until now.
I would like to give credit to Scheff's Blend for this idea, and after tinkering with the the doom game folder on my memory card, I found a file called ".nomedia". Within that same folder was over 100 sound files for the game doom, BUT my music player was not reading that specific folder.
I figured it had to do something with that ".nomedia" file, and coincidentally it DID.
Instructions:
1) Download and unzip nomedia.zip somewhere onto your computer
2) Inside is a file called .nomedia, copy it into the directory of media files you want to hide
3) Reboot your phone
P.S. This also works for pictures and video files, BUT for newly taken pictures and videos, or music files added, a REBOOT is REQUIRED to hide them again.
WARNING: this completely hides the files from the phone, so they become unusable to any application until the .nomedia file is removed, and the phone is restarted. I know Scheff's Blend found a way to use those files while hiding them, yet I haven't. If anyone wants to help me out, feel free to.
I know a lot of people wanted to know how to do this, so sorry to any mod who notices I double posted, but I just realized I should have put it in this forum section to begin with. Feel free to delete the other thread in the "Dream" section.
Right on.
Another option that works is placing files you want hidden inside of a folder that starts with a period, such as ".hiddenfolder" or ".stuffimhiding"
Files and folders that begin with a period are considered hidden files by the Android OS and do not show up in Gallery or the music app
Thanks man..
was looking for a way to do this..

Thanks, thats good to know. But can they be used by lets say the dialer.apk as a ringtone?
I do the same thing with Astro. Like Dave said, keeping a folder with a dot at the front and anything within won't be read unless opened by Astro or renamed. This may not work for the ringtones, but its quicker than having to reboot if you just want to hide photos, documents, videos, etc.
I have problem where videos in folder w/ .nomedia get deleted at each reboot... Now using Cyan 4.1.11.1... Really weird. Each reboot deletes videos in those folders

Help for hide gallery and videoplayer

I want to hide Gallery and videoplayer from application menu.It shows all my private images and videos. If it is possible please give suggestion. Thanks in advance.
get app protect, setup a password for your apps
I tried that also.thank you for your reply.
Why not just put a full stop in front of the folder you have your things in for example .porn you will have to do this with the in built my files program then they won't show in the gallery but you can view them using the same program my files, or if you want them in the gallery for a short time remove the full stop and they will appear.
Or u can put .nomedia file to the folder and the content from this folder will not show in gallery
or simply stop making some amateur porn
If you want to "hide" some medias (photos, vidéos), just create an empty file called: ".nomedia" in the folder you don't want in your Gallery/Video/... app.
Thanks
Thank you for all for the wonder full replies.

Gallery folder un-findable

So I loaded Serendipity today. Master cleared and everything. So I was really surprised to find old pictures on my phone when I opened the gallery app. And strangely it wouldn't let me delete them. Hmm. So I looked in the sd folders, dcim etc. Cannot find these pics anywhere! The gallery app did tell me the file names So I loaded up root explorer and ran a search... NOTHING!
These pics show in my gallery but I can't find the files anywhere. Where are they hiding?

Went into the stetting, manage applications, to the gallery app and hit clear data, and these strange photos vanished! Still don't know where they were. but they are gone now. Would loveto hear where they were stored if anyone knows...
Spoke too soon! So after a reboot, the folder of pics comes back! If I clear the gallery app's data, it vanishes again, but returns after every reboot. Can anyone help with this?
Is it a stack of thumbnails (separate folder path) or viewable image files? If you have external SD maybe browse it on a PC.
It still there with no external SD, and I can't find it from the PC or root explorer.
You, know, I have a blog, and these all seem to be photos on my blog. And blogger seems to be hooked to Picasa Web albums. So I'm thinking Gallery pulls pulls the contents of my Picasa Web album down to the phone... could this be? Can it be stopped?

If you have them linked then yes that is where they are comming from and why they keep comming back. The only way to stop it would be to but a no media file in the target folder, back draw is that the file will hide it from all Android apps that look for media

dropbox and the nook app on my nookie froyo

i have dropbox and it works, but how do i open ebooks in the nook app? i dont know how to access the downloaded files from dropbox
Download the dropbox app from market. Then open up dropbox from your nook and download the pdf. You can open the pdf document with an app from adobe or an app like ezpdfreader.
well i put epub (standard nook format) in my dropbox acct. i can download the file but id ont know where it downloads to nor can i open them in the nook app.
If you are talking shipment you might use Aldiko app to read them. It provid so the ability to import and read your downloaded ebooks into its library from the dropbox directory.
You get the files there by tapping them in the dropbox, which downloads them to York tablet locally

It downloads to. /dropbox

You have to move documents to /sdcard/Nook/MyDocuments/ in order to sideload into the nook application. Took me forever yesterday to find the documentation on that. Furthermore, can't figure out how to get cover art to display.
Dropbox downloads are stored in a folder on the SD Card. You can get to it by going to Menu -> Library, My Files (tab), Select Memory Card, then find the dropbox folder.
My dropbox folder gets stored in:
/mnt/emmc/dropbox. *Not on my sdcard*
Making dropbox unusable for me
use calibre to download metadata and transfer. very simple and easy. dropbox is OK if you don't want wires. but calibre brings all of the metadata and organization.

It's not possible, because Whatsapp triggers the internal media library. You could manually clean media storage and sony gallery data or use an alternative app.
I would recommend Quicpic for general pictures like DCIM and Sony Album for dirty Whatsapp Images

undisputedpro's method is better, creating a folder prevents media apps from scanning the contents with that folder present on same directory. I'm using this method since i always save pages with the UC Browser and its annoying to see that the images embedded on the page is being scanned by our phone, result is it is displayed on the Picture widget of our Home launchers and gallery apps.
Thanks for the tips.
I have this same problem with TomTom, despite all the folders have a nomedia file in them, the images still show up in album. However, the whatsapp sent folder, which also contains a nomedia file does not show up...
They broke my signature...

I use quickpic so .nomedia file works i dont use album for veiwing pics
The pictures, movies and sounds sent and recieved from whatsapp are stored in the internal SDcard in the folder Whatsapp. IF you place a .nomedia file do this in all the folders This helps for me
I second what @mrjraider had written.
The Xperia Album galery app does honor .nomedia files... but only if the .nomedia file is located on the same folder as the pictures. It will still scan subfolders underneath for pictures.
So, go to Whatsapp's Images folder (by default located in /storage/sdcard0/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images ), and create a file named ".nomedia" (dot nomedia, without quotes) there. Inside that folder, there's a Sent subfolder. You might also want to create the ".nomedia" file there.
Do likewise for ther folders inside /storage/sdcard0/WhatsApp/Media, if necessary.
Don't forget to 'close' the Album app (tap "Recent Apps" button [the rightmost one] and swipe the "Album" app to the side), before opening it again.
You'll see that the Album app honors the .nomedia files.
.
so let me check if I got it right.
I have to create ".nomedia" FILE not FOLDER in the folder that contains the pictures I want Album app to not see.

Yes.
Also, clear cache on album and media scanner.
