MD5 sum mismatch-ClockworkMod Recovery - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
Well I started not to long ago on this rooting, nand, flashing experience and thus far with your help here at xda its been great!
Recently started having an issue where I would do a nandroid backup and would get the dreaded md5 sum mismatch message when trying to restore it...
At one point I did change the name of one of the backups to which I read somewhere here is not a good idea, deleted that one and did a new backup...
I saw a theme for aosp which I flashed and well it didnt work (thats another story)...tried to restore a backup and again, same error..Had to flash a clean version of aosp 0.9.9.2...
Now the only change there has been to the device has been a new 8Gig MicroSDHC class 4 card from ADATA...Could this be the issue to the corrupt backups? Or is this a known issue with clockworkmod recovery(2.5.0.1)?
Any info on this would be helpful. I have the old card that came with the phone blank. What folders should I copy over from my new SD card to the old one in order to test to see if its the card?
Thanks in advance!

simple answer would suffice to say the least...appreciate the help!

I would recommend testing a different card. It could be that the card is corrupting the files, therefore the MD5 checksums don't match.

switched from unknown class to class 6

I recently made the change from an unknown class 2gb sdcard to a class 6 4gb sdcard and now things are going crazy. Hero has become unbelievably unstable and cyanogenmod boot loops.
any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.
My guess is you failed to transfer over the apps that were on that old sd card (in the ext 2/3 partition) and now the phone can't find them. Either copy over all the data (search the forums to find out how) or do a wipe to make your phone forget about all tthose apps.

i've done several wipes, several reformats of the ext3 and the entire card, i've tried to do nandroid backup restores, nothing is working. :\
Done a full wipe and still issues? Huh. Try removing the card completely and doing a wipe. You shouldnt get any errors not having an SD card. If you do get errors then this might take a while. If you get no errors then your card is somehow screwing things up.
mistaken post. ignore this
so turns out there is something wrong with my sdcard. tried flashing xROM 1.4 at least three times and got boot loops every time, then booted up without the card in and booted up fine.
it also works when i use the switchrom script to restore.
is there anything i can do to make this card usable?
Don't take my word for it, but maybe a format and partition of the card again would probably work.

if anybody has any help, i'd love it :\ just like to know if this card is useless to me or not. thanks
if you have vista plug it in and it should say something about fixing errors when my sdcard was f***ing up i thought i might as well try it and it worked, hope this helps

if i were you i would send it back as faulty cos if it is giving you this many problems so early on that is not a good sign
btw you could try completely unformatting the card then re partitioning the empty space

the thing is, it's not new. i've had it for about 6 months and been using it in my mp3 player. i'm assuming that might be why it's not working. i've unformatted and reformatted the entire card a couple times.
i'm planning on getting an 8gb class 6 card soon, so as of now, i'm using my old 2gb card. but thanks for the help

nandroid backup issue and apps2sd question

1) So I went to run nandroid backup and it's saying
"Performing backup."
"Error running nandroid backup. Backup not performed."
That's all it says, and takes me back to the recovery screen...
I'm assuming this has to do potentially with the storage on my SD Card... any suggestions?
I am running Cyanogen 4.0.4 w/ Enoch v1.3
2) is there any way to roll back from Apps2SD so that Apps2SD stops working? Is it just as simple as re-partitioning the SD as FAT32 and move along? will cyanogen move the apps liek before? or should I reflash at that point?
thanks a bit of a newb, finally signed up here as I've been floating around a bit...
thanks in advance... Also I did search the forum, in hope someone had the issues I did, but found nothing...
Could this be due to the partition of the SD card for apps2sd??!
just curious.. since that's the only thing I've changed since my last nandroid backup...

yes, that might be it. you may have corrupted your nandroid files somehow or just plain lost them. i hope you were smart enough to do a complete sd back up onto your computer before doing any partitioning.
if you did a full back up onto your computer you should have a nandroid folder in there. drag and drop that nandroid folder onto your sd card after you delete the current one that is on your sd card. then do a restore.
I DEFINITELY made backups... my time as a unix admin, has taught me the necessity of backups lol...
so probably safest to :
a) reformat my sd card back to fat32
b) copy nandroid backup
c) restore
or
a) reformat sd card back to fat32
b) wipe
c) reflash CM 4.0.4
d) create a new nandroid backup
which is the best option?

try the first method. if it doesn't work, just do the second since that is the only leftover option, lol. good to know you made backups .

Partitioning new SD Card

New G1 owner. Purchased this:
hxxp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=150522897074&si=ja459pNCCg3NN1jod0njqPzl3JI%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123#ht_500wt_1156
No clue what it's running for Recovery though but I'm assuming the CM6 rom comes with one? I'm waiting for a response from the seller.
Now I want to buy a new 32GB Class 6 SDHC card for use with this particular phone. But I've noticed that partitioning the card is an important step during the installation of said ROM? How would I go about partitioning this new card without bricking my phone? I don't need any of the files off the new card since the seller mentioned that he had cleared it. What should I partition the card too? I've heard anywhere from 512MB to 1.5GB?
What are some applications that I should be aware of for this particular ROM? I'm very new to all of this and want to keep the phone running decently well. I've heard something about an application with the ability to run apps off the SD card to preserve memory? Would installing such a program be simple for someone as noobish as me? Or should I keep it simple and just install everything onto the phone?
Ok. Well first off you have a lot of reading to do. Hope you like to read. I can tell you that partitioning your sdcard is done through recovery mode. You need to get in there first. Also cm6 is a rom. It does not come with a recovery. That is totally different. It would be good to know what version you have. I assume amon ra 1.7.0 but it will tell you on the recovery screen. What values you set it to are up to you but you can just leave the values alone when your doing it and it will give you a starting point. The rom will tell you how to save your apps 2 sd. You have to read the first post to find that info out. Good luck and welcome to xda

I could really use some help, *UPDATE* Thanks XDA....

I don't know where to turn. I started a thread about my effed up nook but it got deleted (my fault) I'm completely at my wits end here. I had NookFroyo .68 working just fine on mine but like an IDIOT I thought it would be neat to try out CM7. Big mistake would not get past the animated N screen no matter what. I got the SD version of the Customized Nook Froyo to boot up but its very slow and stuff doesn't work. How do I get a ROM back on the eMMC? Some one suggested I get CWR and a ROM on the card and flash it via CWR off the card onto the eMMC. How exactly do I do this? I CANNOT get the winimage method to work no matter what I do and I don't know WHAT I'm doing wrong. Everytime I direct winimage to the place I've downloaded an image to, theres nothing there....
I thought I ALMOST had it a few minutes ago. I can get the CWR to come up and I flashed the flashable eMMC NF. I got my hopes up as it started to boot BUT OF COURSE NOT - went into a boot loop, constantly doing the N screen over and over. WTF.
I'm desperate here. I'm at the point where I'm willing to pay someone a small fee to help me get this sorted out. I'm going to keep on trying....
on win image, when you go to select the file. you must change the file types it see's to everything. that will let you see the .img file you downloaded.
We are talking about Win32disk imager right? It only gives the *img selection.

I've heard of an 8 boot reset. How does that work?
I'm reading the "Recovery" thread. Should I do the "repartiion" zip file? I'm starting to think that maybe the problem...
EDIT: Tried the Repartion.zip. No change. Still continously reboots.
I just tried the Nook restore file and it still gets hung up on a different N screen (the Nook symbol). What in the HECK! It wont' go into CWR anymore, says there isn't any room on the card. AN 8GB CARD!!!! I put the card back in the computer and it says its only 115MB! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE.
EDIT X2: LOOKS LIKE I GOT IT BACK TO STOCK. WHEW! Now I can start over! Tomorrow after I rest a bit. LOL

This will allow you to get the card back to showing 8gb:

Hi,
I found this post (in developers/cm7 users thread) very useful for installing
CM7:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11535969&postcount=151
It is a little dated (weeks) but very detailed and should hopefully still all work fine.
Some more general information on:
http://nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor
I find that I never have enough uSD cards to use - so make sure that
you have several spare. The emmc Androids are still in general expecting
an external SD card for storing data such as ebooks etc. and CWM will
backup to the external cards too.
CM7 and Froyo use different disk format types for various partitions, don't know,
but that may be part of your problem?
Your PC won't normally read some of the linux partitions on the SD card
either - hence only 115MB showing. This is the boot partition, formatted with
FAT32 (a PC related format) In general you don't need to reformat this partition,
just update or change some of the files. (Some of the names of formats used include:
FAT32, EXT3 and EXT4)
CM7/17 and CM7/19 Have both been very stable and easy to use for me. I switched
to CM7 from Froyo 6.8 a week or so ago.
Good luck, the Color Nook is a fun device!
Peter
Thanks all I appreciate the help. I used some HP utility to take care of the cards, worked great.
Ok I've got a NF .68 up and running. Titanium backup worked beautifully. SetCPU is running it at 1.1 interactive..... HOWEVER!....
I flashed it with a another version of the CWM flashable .68 NF that I had previously. I tried to reflash the other version and it went to install then stated "Installation aborted". I tried twice and got the same thing. I guess its no big deal since their the same version just this one thats on there had some more tweaks hence the title "Customized".
My question is why did it do that? My guess I was supposed to format or clear the data/system/caches' in CWR. Is that right? If so, which ones precisly do I clear or format before flashing a new ROM? I'm starting to think thats' what happened when I tried to load CM7 (Yes I had CWR 3010) and go me all borked to begin with....
And if someone would like to answer a quick question. What this EXT4 stuff and how does it pertain to flashing ROMs? Thanks guys... Your advice got me back up and running!

Always format /system, /data, and /cache. Whatever you do DO NOT format /boot.
As to why you may have had an issue on trying the other ROM. My guess is it has to do with what version of CWR you had been using and wha twas on the device prior to flashing it. I've found if you make say a nandroid backup using 3.0.0.6 or earlier, and are currently using CWR 3.0.1.0 they don't mix well. And I think it has to do with the fact the older CWR version only supported ext3, and the newer one has ext3 and ext4 support. So once you install a ROM using CWR 3.0.1.0 that uses ext4, and then you try to go back to a ROM that is ext3 it just doens't work out like planned.
That all said I not longer flash CWR to eMMC, and I have a bootable sdcard running 3.0.1.0 with all my current and old backup files. Make life much much easier IMO seeing as you can always boot to an sdcard, and all backups are in the correct format and will Restore just fine.
Thanks for the info! I'm sure that will make trying to upgrade to CM7 actually work! LOL!
But first can someone explain to me what this EXT3/4 stuff is?
Different filesystems for Linux/Android. Wikipedia has pages for each if you want google them and get too much info
Too much info? No thanks! As you can see I can barely handle the info I'm getting now!

SD suddenly unmounts on V30B

Ok so I am starting this thread to track down the SD unmounting issue present on V30B. Every idea is welcome.
Things I have tried and have not helped me:
Pimp my ROM (tweaks to external memory)
Factory Reset
Format SD (on ROM)
Different SD card
look this bug is not specific to the rom , most of v30b users dont face it ,, try removing "android_secure" folder from sd ,, also re-flahs your current rom on full wipe
Had that issue too.
Things i've done to track down the issue in 7 days testing period.
1) Formatted my SD Card (16Gb Sandisk Class8)
2) some combinations of cluster sizes (reformatting through Card readers in windows - filesystem fat32) and mp3 only for testing
3) Finally, reflash rom (Marvel ICS) and yes, once again i had that issue after receiving some phone calls...
I believe it's the SD Card itself which started to give up due to aging ... (3 years old)
I'll try if that happens again with a 2Gb Samsung
Question: what's the brand, size and speed class of your SD card?

I have tried 2 cards with same results: Amazon class 10 16GB and Kingmax class 4 4GB(included with phone). I was on Froyo before updating to ICS and never had this issue until updating.
BTW, have you tried the tweaks from Pimp my Rom?
Had this problem twice, but for now, no issues. I'll report if that happens again, but my main concern is that there's something going on with the SD Cards or some files.
Maybe ICS has some "sensitivity" with that so we should all start with format and transfer only our crucial files on the card to troubleshoot...

Check my post #4 .... just a bit above all these
So far, no unexpected unmounts, but as far as i'm reading about this issue of ICS on some other cellphones, it might have to do with the source code (I have no idea about these things) of this version, or it's just a coincidence and our SD cards are more sensitive now, with 4.0
First, try to format and restore your basic folders (music, pictures etc..) do not restore all useless folders or "junk" files... keep your SD card and input tray's contacts clean and firmly insert the card.
We'll see how it goes.... by the way, i have no tweaks from Pimp my rom for the microSD.
Ok I just reflashed (same V30B). I will conduct a 1 day validation to see if it is solved.
I had that problem a lot with rrgrrg's IceBOOM, only once in that week I used his 4.01 and non at all in the two days I use 5.01. But I must say that I heard from other ppl that use a v30b version, that they have it a lot and other ppl with the same ROM don't have it at all, so I gues it is a mix that some cards are more 'sensible' and some ROMs can handle it better.
tfs
again it unmounted. I guess we should wait for V30C (if it is ever released) hoping this bug was addressed.
Formatting the SD from the phone solves the problem ....

I've had this happen with 28C. I've been using 30B that is not rooted and not had a problem at all. I'm starting to think it's the flash process. I erased all data on the SD card and flashed with Smart Flash. No problems seem it came out.
