NANDroid backup still work after compress and upload? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
got a Galaxy S International edition with 8 gigs offen space. I often flash new ROMs (about twice a week ) and got sometimes about 5 NANDroid backups on my SD card. The problem is that they take much space so I decide to upload most of the backups to dropbox and keep only the most important one on the SD. I compressed it with dual file manager (gzip) because Dropbox only supports files under 300 MB if you upload it with android. gzip was around 250 mb. Now I'm uploading these files. But I'm not sure if the backup would still works after I download it because of the md5 checksum.
Does anybody know if it would work?

I don't see why it wouldn't. After you extract the ROM, I don't think the md5 would change.

Thanks, will try restore soon.

Can't make nandroids

Can some one please help me my phone will create a nandroid but wen I go to restore it I get an error no matter wat I do
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Two things usually cause this, either the folder is renamed and has a space in the name, or you are low on battery and need to charge your phone (greater than 50% is best)
Also have a close to full SDCard will cause it.
damn forgot that one. lol Don't think about it, never an issue for me

well it restored this time but after 3 hours on the htc screen i pulled the battery
I have this same issue.
I just created a new backup (97% battery, over 1/2 of SD card mem free). Here's a list of the files that it created:
boot.img
misc.img
recovery.img
system.img
When I look at one of the 2 backups that will actually restore, it shows these files:
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
misc.img
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.img
Any idea why this is happening?
No one has any thoughts on this?
What recovery are you running?
I'm running 1.5.2
You might want to try and use a newer version of recovery. There is 1.6.2 and also darch has one that he OC'd.
I had this problem before when I copied my sdcard to my computer and reformatted my card to fat32 only. When I tried to restore a backup it was trying to write files to the sdcard but there was not an ext file system on it so it would abandon the process.

did you repartition your sd and it worked?
I flashed 1.6.2, and I still can't get a good backup.
The upside is I still have one that works, the downside is that it's from 6/1.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on other things to try.

[Q] For all you "smart" phone guys out there (restoring apps)

So long story short, I upgraded to 2.2 and my phone bricked (i9000m) so I did a factory reset and it worked - but I lost all my apps.
Thing is, I had 2 app backup programs - one called "AppBackupReinstall" and the other is "MyBackupPro"
Now before I upgraded I "backed up" my apps to a single file (about 500mb) and put this on my EXTERNAL SD card
I am having trouble's trying to reinstall my apps though. It's not working. Any ideas? If not, how can I utilize this 500mb file (full of apps) to reinstall them ? can it only be done via the app used to create it? please help
yeah if 'MyBackup' Backed up your files then only that app can restore your files. just re download it off the market.

I opened the backup reinstall app -- but there's no way to reinstall
wtf?
why would you have the ability to backup all your apps to a 500 mb file but no option to reinstall them ? so stupid
If not, how can I utilize this 500mb file (full of apps)
Are the files in APK format by any chance .
Also i would contact the apps developer if you cannot restore from a backup .

Mate, have you tried moving your backup files to your internal sd? Or look in your file manager under the backup directory and see if thete is a folder to place your backup files.
Just an idea, i havent used these apps.
I strongly suggest you spend a couple of quid and get titanium pro. Or if yr skint, the free version is good but takes a bit longer to restore.

Nandroid back-ups

One more ? Every time I try to do a nandroid backup through recovery it will start doing it just fine but then it will get to a part and says skipping external storage then it will go no further period and the only way I can reboot it is to do a battery pull and I have tried this numerous timew Does anyone know what's up with that?

This has happened to me some times. I've read in some place that it's a common error if you have more than 3 or 4 bakcups on the nandroid folder (it doesn't matter how much free space you have).
Since I keep 2 or 3 nandroid backups on SD, I haven't any problem with this.
I hope this work for you.

The same problem for me with Androidiani OR 3.3 and I have no backup on nandroid folder.
Nandroid backup stuck at "Dumping.." system or data till the battery's empty, and there no data backed up, so I have to use Titanium Backup for backing up data
Sometimes it works if you format your card and download a fresh copy of AOR. Make sure you backup your sdcard before formatting it.

I had the same problem a few days ago. just replace the current openrecovery with the FuFu one found in the dev section. And then copy the nandroid backups from the old recovery and paste them in the new one. The problem should be solved....

for some people it works when they have format the sdcard over the milestone settingsmenu and redownload the OR...
i don't have any problems with nandroids, but sometimes the OR just freeze and i can't do anythink, i think its an main problem, but don't know how to solve...
if you have a second sdcard, test if it work with it, may your sdcard is damaged...

Here's what I do.
First, download mini partition tool for formatting the SD card (http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html), don't forget back up the sdcard before doing format.
after formatting complete, copy your back up to your sdcard, and then copy the fresh OR (I'm using the androidiani OR 3.3 (http://code.google.com/p/androidiani-openrecovery/download/list) to your sdcard.
Go to openrecovery and do the nandroid.
On my case the nandroid backup is success.
Hope it works on you too.
Hey could you check if the Nandroid backup is created? in my case, the process stopped at the System Backup. But when I did a battery pull and booted to recovery, I found that the Nandroid was indeed created...
Ye it did make a back up after a pull but the only thing that was missing was the system file

I had this problem last week. The nandroid would fail when it hit my Ext2 partition, and I'd have to do a battery pull.
I put the card in my laptop using an SD adapter and ran a chkdisk on it in windows 7. Sure enough there were errors on the card that needed repairing. After that, nandroid worked perfectly.
I've had the error as well once before, and that required a bit more work. My milestone came with a 16gb card, but I upgraded to a 32gb card...still have the 16gb in reserve 'just in case'. And it's a lucky thing I do. I deleted my music off the 32gb card to make room, and then used the previously mentioned minitool partition wizard to clone my 32gb card to the 16gb card.
nandroid worked on the 16gb card without any problems.
So i wiped the 32gb card (deleted all partitions from it) and then cloned the 16gb card back to the 32gb card...
nandroid started working again.
Since most people probably don't have spare cards like that lying around, you SHOULD be able to replicate what I did by using a regular SD card or even a USB stick.
Hope any of that helps.
Nandroid never works for me also....

Fixed.... it was my dodgy 16 gb micro sd so I'm now using the 8gb supplied and is now working
