Hi folks, I am looking at a driod to replace my WM6.5 unit and up till now I have managed to avoid using anything that needed data, reason... I live in Australia and the telcos know how to charge for data like it was gold.
But as a LOT of the new apps and services require data then I have to look at the plans and make a stab based on expected monthly data usage...
I know, I know, how long is the piece of string......
What I am asking is can people give me a rough estimate of monthly data usage on any network with any apps enabled, I reckon with good and bad I can figure out what may be feasible for my selection.
email usage is light, web next to nothing (for now) and not sure about other services, I have wifi at home so would attempt updates and stuff there rather than OTA
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Hey
Well, not sure of my exact data usage, but it would be sure to increase 10 fold (it did for me at least coming from a blackberry). There is so much stuff that can be gained through apps that use data. Maybe you could tell us the various price ranges for the data plans and decide that way?
Aldo there are tons of apps that will monitor your data and give you alerts and such so the fear or unintentionnaly going over is slim.
Hope this helps.

Thats the problem from my end, none of the telcos are helpful as such, they range from 200mb to 1gb but are ALL different in price, so one charges x for 200mb on y cap and another is double for the same 200mb but a different cap
So what I needed was someone to say what they do on an average month, 2mb, 20mb, 784mb, 3.2gb etc etc, this way i can figure out the cort/benefit ratio of cap/plan v's qouta and extras
It seems to me that many apps I use give my flexibility in this area. The main apps I use that download data are configurable of how often to check for updates. For example, I can set my weather widget to download new info anywhere from every 15 min to every couple hours. Also, syncing with gmail and other google services can be turned on and off so you could only have it on when on wifi. Twitter and Facebook apps also have settings to change how often you have them refresh the data. So if you don't use too many apps or just set all of them to only update manually you can limit your data usage by a lot.
OK, can I just ask people to actualy state
HOW MUCH DATA YOU USE PER MONTH
Thank you.
my first month, i have no idea how but i used 3.3gb.
every month after that has been around just under 1gb, except last month when i had to tether my laptop because my home internet was out for a week, the data for that month showed 1.2gb.
I have two widgets, facebook and twitter that sync about every 2-4 hours, i adjust them some times to sync less and i manually sync them if i want to read and am bored. I have newsrob which syncs my google reader articles, sometimes i have that sync every 4 hours sometimes fully manual. I have background data turned on almost all the time and gps turned on always updating my location with latitude, i have gmail and an exchange account syncing for work using ssl. i have last.fm scrobbling all the music i listen to and stream music with it occasionally, not all the time. i browse the web on it quite abit whiel sitting at home and watching movies with the girlfriend as well as look up random facts and other things i come across day to day.
let me know if you need any other input!
I use on average somewhere between 900mb and 1.2gb
Thats streaming Pandora most of the time I'm in my car, using GPS maybe 2-3 times a week and pretty heavy data usage in other ways (i.e web surfing and apps)
I don't do much tethering or downloading of large files. I have tethered a few times but nothing that I would call average.
I used to use about ~2 GB when just using it for Pandora, hulu, and browsing. Now I'm at around 7 GB since I tether.
For comparison, I used 65mb on my bb bold 9000 and now 1gb on my n1. Mostly because its so fast! I do not really stream. I only browse, email, chat and some videos. Its a lot of usage from just browsing
before froyo i ran about 1-1.5 gb a month, now ive tethered a lot and started listening to more music so im up to about 4 gb

billing cycle: 7/20 - 8/19
data used: 36Mb
txt (sms to you non american types ): 16
minutes: 13
what I'm using that is data intensive:
google maps- hourly, with two 2 hour driving trips using it
gmail - it pushes all emails
email - check every 15 minutes, two additional accounts
maverick pro - uses gps and data
pandora - no usage this cycle, i usally stream at work, and i'm on vacation this week
normally, if i use pandora, it's for 4-6 hours per day, at roughly 1Mb / 15 mintues
there, hopefully you'll have an idea what a typical nexus user will burn through in a billing period.
I have a 500mb plan, and to date (over a year) I've only come close to that once.
I have Twitter refreshing every 10 minutes, GMail push, Email every 15, and Facebook every 30. Plus some web browsing (of relatively light sites). No video or audio streaming.
On average I'm around 250mb a month now, because we have no wifi at work. When I was in school (wifi on campus, and at home), I never went over 100mb. Usually less than 50.
~600MB monthly.
It consists of me tethering the laptop on the way to work and back ~2 hours a day, mostly. When I didn't use it and just surfed for fun, I'd get ~150MB monthly. When I didn't surf at all, the data apps put me at ~40MB monthly. I'm using Gmail, Gtalk and several smaller-scale apps like Astrid.
THANK YOU THANK YOU to those that actualy posted figures, the plans over here are rather stringent and no way could you support some of the figures you have indicated without incurring signifiacnt costs, I now have an idea that data costs are a priority something I have to factor in to the overall package, and unless the telco has an unlimited plan I have to read the fine print for excess charges VERY clearly.
Thank you once again
I hovered around 7-11gb a month when I was on att wireless. Their footprints issue great in Miami. I swapped to T-Mobile and they suck. Its horrible. I hardly ever touch my phone now. And it shows! I now hover around 300mb-800mb
Hello All
Has anyone found a good data counter for the Galaxy. I use the Mobile AP tool a lot to share internet with my laptop. I used to have an MDA Diamond running Windows and my traffic per month was usually between 1 gig and 2 gig which was reported by i think Octrotalk or something, it was the default data counter that came with the phone.
My problem is that now i'm on Android i can't use that program so i've been using NetCounter which has good reviews but i don't believe the figures its reporting. I tried the Phone Usage app too but that didn't even report anything. In nearly a full month NetCounter says ive only used 141 mb which is way too low. I go on Youtube, I download apps and i surf all via the phone then i connect to my laptop 4 days a week and stay connected for around 9 hours. I have XDA and Facebook both on tab most of the time as well as visiting other sites and i play quite a lot of java games on Facebook so surely it should be higher than 141mb
Was the windows phone just downloading lots of extra rubbish?
or is NetCounter not reporting correctly?
I use 3G Watchdog, seems to work alright and has a nice widget to sit on your homescreen

Lol.... yea when it eventually gets released, that's another thing to look forward to then
Thank you both for your answers, i'll install it right away and report back in about a months time.
Iv personally used 3g watchdog for some time and had a slight problem with the program resetting the counter before the end of the month/bill tried everything but it never kept counting till needed
currently using net counter from android market which never gave me any problems yet , running good and strong for a couple of months now no random resets, im not quite sure about sharing the 3g connection as i never did yet. i tried it at first when i got the phone and found out the connection was working a little faster than the 3.5g wireless modem i use for my laptop which only proved to me that the phone was as amazing as it is.
i recommend both as both give you detailed info with 3g , wifi usage but for tethering im not quite sure if its counted in those 2 programs
i guess u could make things easier and get a counter for ur pc/laptop and then simple set the tethered connection as a seperate one and at the end of the month add the phones counter with the laptop's one (( doing all this just to reduce the load on the phone and get an accurate measure for how much ur using from ur data plan))
LOL i recently found out from a techie at my cell provider ETISALAT that the unlimited*** 3.5g data package notice the 3 stars ***= a monthly limit of 10GB of both upload/download combined worth 135 dollers a month. They sure know how to suck us dry >_<
Mobile Counter
I used 3G watchdog for quite sometime but it wasnt as accurate and it stayed in status bar no matter what we try which was quite irritating
So i switched to Mobile Counter app..i luv it..it is accurate..shows many graphs..and the best thing u also have widgets in that..BABY I LIKE IT!!
Hit THANKS if i helped
Hello all.
I work at a Best Buy in the mobile department. Today I had a lady come in and show me that her Atrix HD had used 85 MB of her 200 MB data package. She told me that in the previous month her phone had exceeded her allowance and that she was only two weeks through her current month, and that with her old phone she had barely used the 200 MB at all.
I checked the data usage settings and found out that AT&T Smart Wifi accounted for 60 MB of that 85 MB of usage.
What I would love is if anyone of you have the Atrix HD on the stock ROM with that app, for you to go into your settings and check to see if Smart Wifi is using inordinate data like her phone is. The reason why is simple: AT&T bundled the app into a software update for the phone and made it uninstallable. The average user is not going to figure out how to stop the app from chewing up data like that, so it's potentially costing a lot of people money. If you see similar data usage to what I'm describing, I would love it if you could post screenshots. I want to tip off the tech sites if I can corroborate this, because if this is a real issue and it goes public, we have a chance to make AT&T fix it.

Nothing on my Atrix HD shows AT&T apps using data at all, but I also skipped that portion of setup and use T-Mobile on my AT&T model.

I disabled mine. I don't know about the app itself using data (although it might download lists of AT&T access points or something), but I did see someone over on AtrixForums.com say that it seemed to make their home WiFi connection unstable when it was running. They were seeing cases where their home connection would disconnect and then subsequent data would be over the carrier connection. I tried it on for a while and generally didn't see that issue, but I saw a blip or two where it looked like the Smart WiFi app may have put the AHD's WiFi to sleep causing it to flip back to carrier data... Between that and the fact that I saw little value to the app, I disabled it.

I disabled that crap. Dumb app....

I use smart WiFi, but it's not in my list of apps using data. In that same list, you can disable background data if you have a data limit set. I've disabled background data for every app in the list, and it's made a HUGE difference in my data usage. Only used 114 mb this month, and the billing cycle ends in 2 days...

I had to disable it also, it was disabling my wifi leading to crazy data usage.
+1 , Smart Wifi was acting like a Smart Ass , i deleted it too .
I have had my Turbo for a week now and so far I am loving it.
However I am having a very strange issue. I started downloading GTA:SA from the google play store the other day. I was home so I was connected to wifi, the play store even prompted and I selected the option to only download over wifi. However about half way through the download I started getting data usage notifications from Verizon. It seems as though the Turbo is somehow using data when connecting to wifi. The strange thing is that the data usage section in Android settings don't show any spikes or data usage out of the ordinary.
Currently the data usage section shows only 0.5GB of data used since I got the phone (about 9.2GB on wifi). However according to Verizon tracking I have used nearly 5GB!!
Has anyone else run into this issue?
Edit: I ended up getting in touch with Verizon tech support. They can't seem to determine what is going on either, they could see that I was connected to wifi when the data usage was occurring. They opened a ticket with their engineering team on this and said they would let me know what they find. I will update this thread when I hear back from them
Would still be interested to know if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.

While I am sure that you thought your comment was in some way helpful or relevant, maybe next time you should stick to complaining in a thread specifically for that.
I now remember why I stopped posting to these forums in the past.
I maybe having the same issue. I received my first data usage limit text a few days ago. At first I thought it was due to my other line being used by my daughter but she has been in a Wi-Fi only area so it has to be on me. I'm always on Wi-Fi when I'm home and that's where I received the data usage notification. I ended up adding 2gb just to get me through a couple of days. Let me know what technical support says. I'd really appreciate it.

I will let you know. They said they would follow up with me at the end of my billing cycle (the 15th).
I have been trying to reproduce the issue so I can provide them more information about when it is happening but it seems intermittent. When I called they did upgrade my plan to 10GB (from 2GB) for the rest of the month and credited my account for the difference to get me through my billing cycle so that might be worth it to give them a call. Also, if more people report an issue they might look a little deeper into it.
If you call I would recommend using this number, 866-221-4096. That is the direct line to their tech support. That way you don't have to go through the stupid basic troubleshooting that their tier 1 techs make you go through.
Thanks for the info. I'll call tech support tomorrow so that we have additional visibility.

I have been having a similar issue, I've been having these small amounts of data being used while on wifi. went to the verizon store after speaking with a person over the phone. Lady on the phone said that it was normal... :/....so I went into the store. Guy said it might be an app but I've never heard of anything using data while being on wifi!
Store guy asked how I could prove it, and most of the data happens to me around 11:00pm-5am while im at home asleep!
He insisted on hard reset and to test the apps out, trying to avoid that tho. Maybe I'll have better luck with that number you posted.
At least it not just me!
Update... I spoke with tech support this morning. The support specialist was extremely helpful. She noted that there were several other complaints specific to the data leakage and idle battery drain (both of which I deal with). She ran a remote diagnostic on my hand set and found that I was running with only 18% of available RAM left. She said there is definitely something running in the background that is taking up significant resources and possibly data, but when she checked my phone she could see that I have turned off virtually all extraneous apps and that there is no way the phone should be working that hard. Motorola has been made aware of the data leakage issue and it's expected to be addressed with a software update in the next few weeks. The idle battery drain may be tied to this as well. During my 10 minute call to tech support, I burned through 3% battery which tech support stated was too much. I may swap this device and see if my problem continues with another Turbo.
I also had the data leakage issue while connected to WiFi. It happened my first day, and because my plan was pro-rated to the rest of the billing cycle and it was near the end of the billing cycle, I quickly blew through what was left of my allotment. The Verizon rep on the phone switched me to the non-prorated allocation for the last few days of the cycle.
I haven't seen data leakage since. I wonder if the Motorola Migrate app is what burned through data. Did everyone else here use that?

I did not use the migrate app myself. That was actually one of the apps that I disabled pretty early on so I don't believe that was the cause of the data usage in my case.
Strange as it sounds I am glad to hear that more people are having the issue, at least this way I know I am not crazy.
Hopeful we will hear something semi-official from Verizon or Motorola on this soon.
I got off the phone with a tech guy at lunch, he was telling me that they hadn't had anyone else report this issue :/ he also said that apps that run in the background will still use data instead of wifi while connected to wifi which doesn't sound right to me, though i've never had to manage my data so closely before.
does that make sense to anybody else?

Sounds, to me like he had no idea what he was talking about. I have never had an android phone use data like this when connected to wifi. What number did you try calling?
As I mentioned before I was getting similar responses from their tier 1 support. This number goes straight to their higher level tech support, 866-221-4096. I would recommend giving that a try if you haven't already. If you did try that number I would personally try calling back to get someone else. Not all support techs are created equal.

So just to be clear if im on wifi even background data consuming apps shouldn't be using my data right? I would never had thought that before but that's 2 verizon "techs" that have told me now that apps will still use data in the background while connected to wifi. Sounds retarded to me

I have been running android phones on Verizon for over 5 years and I have never had an issue with data usage before. While I guess it is possible that an app could connect over cellular while wifi is on, it has never been an issue before for me at least.
I did find this post on verizons forums.
https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/821949?start=0&tstart=0
Looks like other people have been having similar issues and Verizons response is simply to "check your data usage and disable anything running in the background". Really hoping we get more of a response then that.
I also wanted to upload some screen shots of this issue so others could see exactly what we are talking about. Before I got the Turbo on the 2nd. I had around 400MB used on my data plan. Currently I am at over 7GB used, however the android data usage tells a different story.
I'm having a similar issue
When i activated my phone last week, I was on wifi as it was restoring all of my apps. I can't remember if i had started the motorola migrate app or not, but within the course of 5 minutes, i got a txt for 50% data usage warning and then 75% data usage... my account claims that i used 1.1 gigs of data during that time, but my phone only showed ~100MB during the first day of activation (actually, mobile + wifi usage during that initial day was only ~500MB).
I talked with the service rep over the weekend (i guess not a real tech support guy) but he couldn't tell me much. My cycle ends tomorrow, and I just increased my data plan from 4 to 6GB for $10 less a month through a customer loyalty thing, so i figured I would be set and that the initial issue was a fluke... today, though, i checked again to compare Verizon's accounting vs. my phone's and they are reporting another ~300MB over what my phone says (Not including that initial 1.1GB spike).
Now, i'm ~100MB from my plan limit, so for today i've just turned off mobile data completely... will be interested to see if their number goes up mysteriously when i'm definitely not using mobile data.
Hopefully this is something that gets fixed relatively quickly with a patch as someone else on the forum mentioned....
This is a strange issue for sure. Good luck to those of you that have this problem. Although both my wife and I are using more data than we normally do so far (which isn't uncommon with a new phone) both of our usages match up within a few MB on our phones and MyVerizon. We did not use the Moto Migrate thing but we did both sign into the VZW Cloud app for the first time. I disabled most of my bloat, but she didn't disable any of hers so that doesn't seem to be a factor.

I think I got some clarity on this issue. I was having the same problem, 4G LTE data being used even though I was connected to wifi. I called the techs at Motorola and was told that this phone does not stop 4G data from being used when wifi is connected. They said you have to manually turn off mobile data to have data ran through only the wifi. They told me to download an app called wifi matic from the play store which would do this automatically whenever wifi was connected. I told them in the 6 years I have had android phones it has always been done automatically. The guy told me it all depends on how the phone is setup and that the turbo was not designed this way. Is it just me or it that not completely ludicrous? We as users have to turn off our mobile data when connecting to wifi just so data doesn't get used on both? I'm beyond frustrated especially because this wasn't disclosed. I ran through my entire 2GB data allotment with Verizon in 8 days because of this.
I called Verizon and explained the situation. They are upping my data for the month and I'll install the app Motorola recommended to prevent this from happening in the future. It's just really frustrating I had to go through all this to find out Motorola dropped the ball.
I always do that anyhow. I figured everyone did. so reading this thread I thought y'all were saying your phones were using data when you had data turned off. I was starting to get worried.
I'm calling BS on that explanation because there are people not experiencing this issue at all. For example, I have had a few VERY heavy data days while I spent the entire day at home and neither android nor VZW say that I used any of my data plan on those days.

My phone is rooted and I have GravityBox installed so I can use the network traffic monitor tweak, among other things. Something I've noticed is that after a reboot, and I guess periodically throughout the day, I'll have a strange upload happening for up to about 2 minutes.
I've checked the data usage for both cellular and WiFi and I've found that neither of them are accurate to the usage listed for the apps. For cellular it is saying that I've used 1.2GB over the course of the pay period. I've checked with my network and my phone has only actually used 280MB so far into the pay period, which closely lines up with my calculated 290MB after adding up all the app usages. The same is also true for WiFi data usage as well, I'm not as concerned as I have no cap, but it says that I've used 12GB however adding up the individual apps only comes out to 3GB. So this would imply nothing is actually being uploaded.
I thought maybe it is an app or process hitting a local socket on loopback for one reason or another, but I just checked with using ping to send large 32kB packets 100 times a second to the loopback and no change in the network traffic monitor at all.
So something is being uploaded after all, or maybe ping's traffic isn't included? The upload rate might clue something in, as it is always 10-15MB/s, which is higher than my broadband upload speed. I don't know, I'd just like my data usage to be accurate so I don't have to worry about using it up for the month.
Anyone else experience the same thing?
Goggle Play Services and Android Services are constantly pinging, uploading whatever.
A minimum of 2/1 to up to 4/2 or more a minute at idle. That's with Google Transport, Framework, all cloud and social messaging disabled or removed. I started using Karma Firewall, blocking the former to reduce battery consumption... it worked.
I'm using a stock load so that's as deep as I can easily peer into the Android mess.
I also block numerous Samsung, other 3red party apps as well as Playstore. I temporarily lift the package and/or firewall block as needed. Near zero usability issues, a great reduction of wasted bandwidth and aminimum 1-3% increase of battery life.
Google Firebase is yet another worthless hog along with all Google, Samsung, App and carrier feedback... gone.
The typical Android is a hornet's nest of unwanted internet activity and an orgy of user data leaks.
Google is the biggest offender of all; a scope storage wolf in sheep's clothing.
Unacceptable.

I'm actually experiencing this for the past few days, have you found a solution yet? I literally tried everything. From clean flashing my rom, trying different kernels, firmwares etc. I checked my data usage its registering via phone settings, but not on my broadband settings. I'm having 5-8mbps uploads every 4-8 mins (it varies).
