Hi,
I just got my Nexus S, and so far so good.
I installed LauncherPro and unlocked the Plus version as well.
But, it seems I don't see smooth buttery scrolling of the home screen.
My LauncherPro settings:
- Keep in memory = checked
- Enable scrollable widget = checked
- Number of home screen = 5
- Number of dock = 1
- Use 4 rows and 4 columns
- Memory profile = High
- Elastic scrolling = No
- High quality scrolling = No
- Minimum scrolling speed = 50
It is fast though, but it just not smooth ...
Am I expecting too much?
Update:
I don't know how to explain it, but something like this:
I can still see the "steps" when scrolling home screen (I am not using transition effect).
Horizontal scrolling movement by positioning the x coordinate of screen-image:
x := x + 10 ... this is fast, but not smooth as you can see the 10 pixels movement steps
x := x + 1 ... this is smooth, but might not be fast
I am hoping the LauncherPro re-write will greatly improve this, or utilizing the GPU if possible (NOT!).
Launcher pro kinda sucks now. The Guy hasn't supported it for a while now. I would stick with the stock or adw

I would give ADW a try later.
How do you deactivate LauncherPro?
Just go into apps manager, go to LauncherPro app and "clear defaults". Once you hit the home button again you'll be given a choice of which home launcher to launch.
LP is buttery smooth for me.
The guy who coded it says he's rewriting it from scratch as the current version is based on Google's stock launcher and what he wants todo is inefficient with google's code. It's why I don't use it since gingerbread.

Adw launcher ex to be exact. Its different from the original version

It's not as smooth as LP is on the Vibrant or Nexus One... that's a fact. It still is smoother than most launchers, but until he updates it for the Nexus S, it won't be as smooth. Although using an overclock kernel helps =)
LauncherPro+ had appalling stutter on my Nexus S (particularly during the leap animation), but I found it was fine after setting the Memory usage preset to Medium and changing the Homescreen cache type to Compressed.
Adjusting the ondemand CPU governor in SetCPU (Sampling rate 20000, Up Threshold 50) helped as well.
LauncherPro has always been very smooth for me. I prefer the features of ADW, but scrolling is a bit choppy on my nexus s (with cm7 rom). On LP, I use the 'low' memory usage setting with 5 homescreens & lots of Widgets
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
launcher pro vs adw ex
I tried to use ADW ex and loved it just found myself going back to launcher pro plus because of the sense like widgets (bookmarks, twitter, facebook, calendar, friends). I know that I can find widgets separately but none have looked as good as these and been scrollable too. I like the transitions of ADW and all the customizations but yeah just not enough to get me away from launcher pro.
The one thing that bothers me about LP is how the 3D app effect is laggy.
Same here, my LauncherPro on my Nexus S isn't nearly as smooth as it was on my Nexus One. I've switched to ADW Launcher EX and then wasn't happy with the app drawer performance and now I'm using Go Launcher. Pretty satisfied with Go Launcher and it's free so whatever. But I really hope the LauncherPro rewrite solves all the problems with it being slow and such.
Stock launcher is lightweight and easy

go launcher definitely feels smoother than LP.
Just be weary of GO Launcher's permission requests. Seems to be a whole lot.

Yeah that's one of three reasons I've not tried our yet. I find it strange for it to need all of them
Agree, it is even slower than on my HTC Desire ...
And I don't have much widgets on it ...
Yeah, I think this is just Nexus S ... smoothness is not one of it's features.
I can live with it, and the "waiting game" for an update from Google is nice
Especially if I can walk into all my Android friend owners who still stuck in 2.2 or less

I'm talking iPhone 4 smooth. I played with it today. (No, I'm not a fanboy of either side, but I prefer Android!)
I'm usually using either Sense's Rosie, or when on froyo, LauncherPro.
I am a heavy widget user, and have either full screen or 2-3 widgets per screen.
The feel that you get when you launch an app on iPhone... just feels... like its popping up instead of zooming.
Anything you guys could recommend? Any specific ROM's?
ROM's I have tried:
Desire R22.1
RoDrIgUeZsTyLe
Stock 2.2
Launcher pro, or adw launcher. I personally prefer launcher pro, it also had some really nice extra features.

Also regarding popping up instead of zooming if you are rooted, check out the spare parts app settings for the transition animations. Set them to fast if you wantt apps to pretty much pop instantly.

+1, what you're feeling is not related to the launcher, or the speed of the OS, it's just a design choice about the speed of the transitions. I agree with you so I made the transition speed about 30% faster [try to do that on an iPhone...]
I personally use Launcher Pro. It's absurdly fast. I've tried to get it to lag just to see what it would take but it's super responsive and won't miss a frame even if you want it to. The feature-set of Launcher Pro is quickly approaching that for ADW and it's much more polished.
I find both Launcher Pro and ADW.Launcher to be insanely fast too. I'm not sure about the OP, but if you are using a Live Wallpaper, try it with just a static one, then it is perfectly smooth while scrolling.

My launcherPro lags when I have 2-3 widgets per page. I am using IntersectRaven's kernel, maybe it's that?
In Launcher Pro, set "memory usage" to "high".
HelixLauncher on 2.1 is the smoothest I've found. Unfortunately it doesn't work on 2.2 so I'm using ADW on Froyo.
Ok so I love android and all of it's openness and mods. I like to modify all electronics that I have. But the only problem I have with it is that it isn't smooth. I have had an iPhone in the past and it was smooth. It just confuses me how 1ghz can lag on a mobile os. I guess this rant is to ask how do I smooth the edges. I've tried many roms and some were better than others. One major thing I want is when I unlock it, when I slide homescreen, and when I open the app drawer to be smooth. Any ideas settings roms?

Read through a lot of threads, and understand that there isn't what you're looking for. You might try MIUI, people report it as smooth - never tried it personally. Also, for launcher use LauncherPro, it's smooth.
About the gigahertz stuff: CPU speed doesn't matter as much as SW does. And there is no "smoothness support" yet.
Android isn't smooth. It's powerful, though. Personally, I like the trade off.

delete all your apps, turn off all services, and it will run just like the iphone. kill every app after you use it. - that's what the iphone does.
You can tweak the internal task killer to speed up your phone. It takes some work and testing. This thread has the directions and explanations.

Geo411m's ROM has these tweaks built in and they work really well.

This has been useless since Froyo. As I once researched and posted, Froyo kills the processes much earlier than Eclair (OOM=12 instead of 16) and considering the amount of memory on Nexus - you never get anywhere below 100MB free unless you run a super-heavy app, and those never stay in background.
Now these tweaks don't do a thing.
does power mean smoothness? I just don't get the concept of having a fast processor and not being smooth. I mean it is almost the same speed as my netbook... on a phone. It seems like that should be smooth. Maybe I'm asking for to much. But another thing I have seen videos of people on cyanogen and it is running smoothly with a live wallpaper. I have never got cyanogen to run smoothly for me even with a still wallpaper. Is there some magical setting everyone but me knows about?

Power = ability to do things. Not CPU power, OS power.
Smoothness = frame rate of transitions between screens in UI. By most part, it's a result of heavy GPU utilization (which Android doesn't do stock) and programming that puts graphics as top priority (which isn't the case with Android). When CPU is made busy making beautiful graphics, it makes beautiful graphics. When it's not the main concern - it makes what it makes.
Again, you seem to be complaining about the launcher - otherwise you wouldn't bring this live wallpaper thing. So go download LauncherPro.
Folks go on about miui being smooth but personally I found it quite choppy at times, and this was most evident using the miui default launcher and comparing to say an iPhone 4, it looks very stuttery. Its better with launcherpro, but then you've lost half the reason for using it.
I am using cm6 and a theme (minimal matte fwiw ) and its very smooth and nice looking (and believe me I am very sensitive to, and loathe slow performance on a latest Gen phone).
Best compromise I've found yet on android.
I use the latest CM6 nightlies with Launcher Pro Plus and have a lot of widgets on my homescreen, smooth as butter.
I do remember the homescreen being a bit choppy when I ran 2.1 on my N1 though...
Have you messed with the performance settings? I hear that switching the performance setting to 24 instead of 34 helps. I'm not on cyanogen right now so I don't remember the exact setting but it is cyan settings then performance.

Truth of the matter is, is that Android running as SMOOTH as an iPhone would be difficult, simply because the IOS operating system doesnt allow any applications to run in the background. Android has TONS of apps that run in the background, and its still smooth as hell if your running the right ROM.
In all honestly, as much as I LOVE enomther and cyan ROMS, MIUI is hands down the smoothest and fastest ROM I have ever used. Give it a shot. I promise that if you can get past the iPhonish look, you will LOVE the speed and fluidness of the ROM. I cant recommend it enough.
I have used the miui roms and they are awesome. But honestly I just feel like a sell out while running them.

The reason why even iPhone 3G's can feel "smoother" than Android phones at most times: hardware acceleration.
Ever since the 2G they've had a dedicated GPU which was used to its fullest in basic UI interactions. We see phones like the SGS with freak GPUs but Android doesn't allow full use of them.
Phandroid made that article on a supposed "Gingerbread" leak. They claim it will introduce hardware acceleration. Hopefully thats true and we'll never hear complaints about a laggy UI again!

Yup, most of the smoothness complaints is just hardware acceleration complaints. After gingerbread if it has hardware acceleration, we won't hear the laggy UI issue, we'll just hear the bandwagon "Fragmentation!"

Most likely something you're doing on your phone then, since it's okay for me with RC 1.2 and I'm undervolted and running at 1ghz.
You can also tell it to stay persistent within go launcher as well under preferences. If it's not that, it's your system most likely causing problems. I upped my vm heap size though as well, but that shouldn't affect go launcher. It was just causing my gallery and such to crash at times because it ran out of memory.
Increased vm, seems to be working well. I might go ahead and uninstall adw too, I think its running in the bg from time to time. Also might be time for a fresh install

I get lag on the home screens after I unlock my phone with any launcher except Sense. I have my phone oc'd too.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Go launcher is EXTREMELY smooth on thunderbread so its def not the launcher itself. No lag after unlock or any anywhere.
Unlocking issue is not launcher related. It's a (mis)configuration of something you did on your phone.
E.g. too undervolted, using setcpu + some other script at the same time, or using interactivex instead of ondemandx (which can cause it to lag for me at least).
I know this thread is from a couple weeks ago, but I was searching for "go launcher" info .... I just installed it and LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! I have been using LPro forever and decided to try something new, glad I did, I love to be able to change everything around, themes, etc., at will.
Anyway, I'm running CM7 1.2 w/stock everything, no over/under clocking, etc., and GO Launcher runs smooth as buttah for me
I was using GO Launcher when I had Bamf 1.7. Everything was super smooth and battery life would last over two days with very minimal use. Flashed CM7, new leaked radio and running GO Launcher and it seems to lag a bit. It isn't as smooth when flipping through the screens. There's a bit of lag when the screen bounces back. Also battery life has gone way down. I can barely get a days worth with minimal use.
which is best light weight launcher which uses low ram ( yes i want to compromise with the customization) because we all have low ram memory problem plz give suggestion
i think zeem launcher is best than launcher pro

GO Launcher is also good. But lags when first used and more animations are used, but overall, it is also nice.
A launcher that ismore lighter than zeem launcher, any suggestion guys
I'm using touchwiz 3.0 launcher. it's very light and if system kills it, it loads applications and widgets quickly!

Agree with this, I use this and it works great. I've tried LauncherEX etc...
Just ensure it is installed on the phone, I put it on SD card by accident and it launches the stock launcher first then instead of the default as it has to prepare the SD card on start.
I've been trying different launchers on this Ace I got recently and it's kinda hard for me to really tell which one drains more battery. My experience with Go Launcher EX and Launcher Pro has been pretty good so far, and although I'm leaning more towards Go for the great weather widget, I still don't know which one to stick with battery-usage-wise.
What has been your experience with different launchers in this regard?
I love ADW Launcher EX the most ans it is the only that I purchased other than Titanium Backup Pro...
Respecting others never hurt, let's build a better XDA community.
360 launcher is also good very lightweight and fast doesn't consume much battery also
Holo Launcher, and it just came out from Beta! It's in the store
Zeam is really lightweight, can't imagine it would use much.

For me, the better launcher would be the stock one. I have tried ADW, EX, Go, etc. Now i'm using LEWA's, its smooth and freaking awesome yet Im battling with my battery which only lasts for 1 1/2 days(MAX). wew!

Zeam and Holo are joint winners for memory usage.
Note: this is for memory usage not battery life, it also depends how much of the CPU launcher is using.
If there is any more launchers you want me to add just say
You must try different launchers and compare ram usage of them. Which launcher is using little ram, that is lightweight and keeps your battery well...
