Most tempting tablet - Nook Color General

Is there a tablet you've seen guts made you stop and say "damn i wish i had one of those"
To tell the truth not many have made me say that since i gott the nook, but the one that has is the saycool m7
I don't have complete specs but:
Accelerometer
3g and wifi
16 gb internal
Micro sd
2 usb ports
Xp but optional upgrade to win 7
Multi-touch 1024x600 touchscreen
Intel atom 1.1 ghz processor (1.2 optional upgrade)
2x speaker and 1 mic
Removable battery
Webcam (albeit a 0.3 mp one)
My favourite 1gig of ddr 2 ram!!
Only weighs about 550 grams
All for only 500 US...
I think the main reason i want it is for the windows os... i love windows...
EDIT: just watched a video, and it also has a touchpad on the back...

Dell Streak 7 I guess. But with Honeycomb. (Xoom etc is too large for me.)
I want a Nook Color with a faster GPU; Dungeon Defenders chops hard once enemies are on the screen. Aside from the GPU, the size is perfect for me.

Apparently it runs faster after overclock... (the game i mean)

Im also a fan of the Streak 7 but i also like the Asus options. transformers might be a bit big for me cause i prefer 7" but with the dock it would be much more productive

XP or Win 7 is just not a touch screen friendly OS...
Sure you can make it work, but...
$500 for an Atom based system....No way...

Note that i said it has atouchpad also...
Anyways my friends dad is the regional sales manger for dell, so i've been able to touch a few touchscreen win 7 tablets and netbooks, and they work fine...

I'd really love a 7" version of the Notion Ink Adam, but the 10" version may suffice.

I'm also waiting for this to ship and to see comparisons between the two screens. $375 is a great price for the "barebones" unit.

actually there were quite a few until i tried them all. tegra 2 seems all great, but until there's some apps besides benchmarks that really tax it i may have to skip it.
i had the g tablet with a modded rom and while it was snappy the only benefit i got was the smoothest scrolling and super fast app installs (installing multiple apps just zipped on by). i don't play many games on android since there really aren't many good ones for me - i hate angry birds btw.
now the ios - i've bought more apps in the last 2 months for my ipad than i have on android in the last year. rag on ios as much as you want but developer support on ios pushes out some very nice games and apps. hopefully android will catch up soon.

The best tablet would have multitouch capacitive for basic navigation and use, but also a true pen-based surface for proper inking - to take notes in shorthand. To draw. To whiteboard. A surface much like my little wacom tablet (obviously I don't know the technical name).
That, coupled with pretty much the capabilities of a Galaxy - that would be the perfect device. At least for my line of work.

Why you...
If there's anthing in the world i hate its microsoft haters

wouldn't want atom for the tablet.
I will wait for orion or other dual cored based ARM and android 3.0 or higher
Now if i did go for a power house slate, i would go for something with core i5 or higher with 128GB SSD and at least 4GBs of system memory

Perfect tablet?
7" touchscreen
wifi
Accelerometer and the other standard sensors from phones
gps
wifi
bluetooth
usb host capable
Sd card slot (not micro)
Full android market support
flash working (froyo or better)
8+ hours of battery life with wifi and gps running
Single core cpu around 800mhz or so is fine.
I don't see any need for a tablet to replace a full computer, so no reason to have a powerhouse cpu. Battery life and small size are far more important to me.

Good list... but I'd add or change a few things to make it "perfect":
trans-reflective capacitive touchscreen (think: pixel qi)
Contract-free 3G
Front and rear-facing cameras
Android 3.0
1ghz, or better
Rear touchpad
WiDi (or equivalent wireless 1080p video transmission)
One can dream, right?

Help me replace my laptop with something brand new...

So, right now, I have a desktop PC and a laptop PC that I use on a regular basis. The desktop is my master system and is good for another 2 years definitely. My laptop has been aging and we're on the verge of a revolution in small PCs.
I have a Dell XPS M140 that I upgraded to 2GB RAM. It has 80GB of hard disk space, CD/DVD burner, and Windows 7. It's getting old and I wondered if everyone could chip in some advice for a replacement.
I spent like $600 on it originally, so I'd like to stick with that price or less. I use it to browse the web and watch internet videos on it while I play XBox360 or when I have people over. I use it to feed to my TV when I have a movie to watch (movie file, not a DVD). I also take it with me on any vacations in the hotel room to keep connected to the internet.
For a replacement, I'm looking for the following...
-CD/DVD drive
-video out
-at least 120GB of disk space
-ability to run Windows 7 Ultimate with Aero
-ability to have 2GB of RAM at least
-USB ports
-Wifi (of course)
-A good processor
-HARD keyboard
-multitouch screen
-$600 or less
Preferred but optional
-ethernet port
-webcam
-4 USB ports
There may not be anything out there just yet that meets all the requirements, but if anything's close, let me know.
I have a Dell XPS M140 too. Great system. I loved the battery life -- 7.5 hours when I bought it like 3 or 4 years ago. But now its old and I rarely use it.
I've migrated to a Samsung N120 netbook. The keyboard is great even though its smaller form factor. The portability is excellent. It's so comfortable to use even with the 97% sized keyboard and 10" screen that I am still able to do most of my programming on it. So it can be used every day for hours with no eye strain or me wanting to throw it cause the keyboard is awkward. I love it.
I've run Windows 7 on it and it runs great once I upgraded it to 2GB. I did go thru the Windows Services and set to manual/disable some of those that I don't need (heavy networking ones) that made it a little faster. It can run OSX too as a side benefit. You can pop in a 640GB in here for cheap if you feel comfortable taking it apart.
I know there is going to be complaints about the processor speed...its a slow Atom. For daily browsing use its not that much difference than the M140's 1.73ghz P-Mobile. I do agree that its slow on Youtube videos and having multiple flash animations on the same page. The newer generation of netbooks are faster and will probably do a better job. Also Adobe is releasing a new version of Flash very soon that they have tweaked and stating would allow the Netbook to view Youtube without the jitters.
If you already have a desktop that is powerful enough for the heavy lifting tasks (photoshopping/video editing/filesharing/etc) then if I were you I would look into a netbook for its portability and convenience. It can still photoshopping btw, just going to take a little longer with the filters and handling large image sizes. And of course it is harder on the small screen.
You can get a great netbook in the $300-350 and get an external slim DVD burner for $50. If you do a lot of traveling or working away from home like at a cafe or just like having it on your lap surfing while you are in front of the TV, a 10" netbook is the way to go.
for the touchscreen thing,
i think you should buy additional hardware such as DUO.
Hmm. Very interesting! Thanks for the feedback.
I really appreciate that another M140 user out there has spoken. I haven't found anyone with this "XPS mini"!
When I upgraded to Windows 7, I can't believe how smooth everything ran. It really sold Windows 7 for me. Yeah, my desktop was faster but, wow, it turned by old M140 into a new PC. I haven't done much programming since college and even then, I did more making Counterstrike maps on their CAD-like interface software than anything.
I was really considering netbooks and your advice fits in well. I like the idea of add-on hardware like DUO to make anything touchscreen, but I would like to be ahead of the game with my new purchase. I felt like even my M140 purchase was behind the game. My desktop was nicely fit with a quad-core masterpiece at the time. Now it's commonplace.
I think a netbook fits my needs perfectly, but maybe I'm waiting for the next wave to include multitouch netbooks. The technology is definitely there, and fortunately it shouldn't be that expensive. I was waiting for someone to post the latest Eee multitouch PC, but I know that the processor is child's play.
I guess I see myself owning 3 systems...
Desktop PC - currently fulfilled need
Multitouch PC - for portability and ahead of the game portacomputing
Slate Phone - I know there's phones and then there's slates, but I won't be buying a replacement for my Rhodium until a nice slate phone arrives (with slide out hard keyboard, of course)
These 3 systems will practically make me have a mess in my pants. We're on the verge of #2, but I know I might have to wait 2 years for a good #3.
I'm staying away from virtual keyboards forever. I know how they are and I know what they can do, but I cannot accept 30 wpm slower. Unacceptable.
Great advice guys, and I really do appreciate your input. Tablet PCs are going to erupt soon, to prove that the iPad is garbage. And I just can't wait for the results. I dream of a day when I can just pop out my multitouch netbook in the comfy Hyatt hotel bed and respond to the next great XDA post.
I actually was looking tonight and there really isn't anything out there right now. I really hope this market picks up. The closest thing is the newest Eee PC, with a processor at 1.66 MHz. My M140 is at 1.73, so I can't go lower. Let's hope for a nice push in products...
Dell should hit this up. The only Multitouch tablet they offer is over $2k!!!!
I bought a LOADED HP tx2000z two years ago because I thought that I'd actually use the touchscreen/wacom digitizer. Boy was I wrong. 2000 bucks later, I honestly wish I would have bought a macbook pro over this POS.
Using a mouse or keyboard still is faster. Windows is not designed well for using a touch screen. Plus, that tiny swivel point where the screen connects to the rest of the computer isn't quite as strong as I had once thought, and all the wiring inside of it, over time, starts to get shorts in it. My sound crackles as I swivel the screen. Also, HP doesn't have the best of build quality in general. However, the digitizer does do an excellent job of speeding things up in photoshop.
My advise: Stay away from laptops with touch screens. Unless you spend the majority of your time in photoshop, it won't be worth it.
got the earlier tx1270 little brother of tx2000z
it get too hot to use in tablet mode and it's too fat and it makes too much noise
speedfan say the gpu is 89c in idle
the heat caused the wifi to stop working
but it was good for reading eComics on if I could stand the heat
I'm not put off tablets yet though
what laptop to get is really down to what one use it for
if it's surfing in the sofa netbooks are great and got long batt
but some people like to game on their laptops in which case they end up having to pay
a lot
got 2 dell work laptops both ugly and plastic'ish but better quality then crappy hp
and got a acer very underpowered one but manage with xubuntu
gf got a new macbook pro cost an arm and leg and kidney but the build quality is pretty good
osx remind me of linux really in a closed platform version though
if I were looking to get a laptop now I would look at tablets without combi keyboard option like the hp got
otherwise I would look at asus eebooks or whatever they are called
Hmm, good points. I guess my consideration for getting something with multitouch is basically to make sure that I'm consistent with the market. If that's what people are buying, I want to have my copy, just in case software erupts for it.
But I'm surprised at the story about the shoddy HP hardware.
I could, however, see how I can use a touchscreen with Windows 7. I won't touch Apple products because they don't suit my needs, but I guess that's why I won't spend $2k on a tablet PC. It sounds like it's just not worth that much.

I've had the SAME exact problems with my tx1219. Too loud, too hot, wifi stops working, and also the touchscreen is horrible.
I've only worked with the tx2000 for 10 minutes, so I can't comment on the problems, but the the touchscreen was really good on it.
yeah tx2000 and up have vacom active digtizer and some got capative with dual touch
but I don't trust their quality so even if they look good on papir I don't want to pay that much with such a high risk of being ripped off

What do you guys think? think the new version is worth it? Considering a 15 inch with a 2.4GHz i5. Cheapest
But yeah, if you think its not worth it, post a alternative please.
Also, whats so good about the new intel cores anyways?
Thanks guys

I was one of the Apple haters that hit no and then ran, but seriously, you can get a lot more for less money.
yesterday i got my hp elitebook 8540w:
core i7-720: 4x1.6ghz
4gb 1333 ram
nvidia quadro fx 1800m
500gb hdd 7200
full hd 15" screen
elitebook build quality > apple unibody.
-> ~ 1,500 €
ofcourse because of my university... but you wanted an alternative, here you have
If you got the money YEAH, but if not i would get a: Dell 1558 (W7 Home Premium x64)
Specs
I've got:
Windows 7 Home Premium OEM
512 ATI HD Graphics Card
500gb HDD
4096MB DDR3 RAM
15.5 LED screen
SRS Speakers (IDT Audio)
Slip Drive( not the pop oiut eg on desktop)
Edit: ow yeah and an i5 Processer
which is quick as hell
First off, thanks for those. Specs' look pretty darn amazing
I looked at those, but they look just so... sharp? Is there anything that looks as nice as a unibody MBP? Like, all one peice? And another thing is battery. The 15 inch MBP has 9.5 hours. All the other like spec'ed ones have anywhere from 3-6 hours. I will be travelng on a 14 hour flight to china, and need the life I can get. I think apple has me on that. Also, their customer service seems pretty good. Any opinions on that? stories to tell?
get a spare battary lol.
it shouldn't be that expansive...
and some plane (scecific company?) provide power output on your own seat.
or you can go wild and charge in the plane bathroom...
Im not a professional at laptop pricing but it shoundn't be that hard
but no matter what alternate laptop you go for you ain't gonna get mac os on it, and its the main selling point seriously my macbook pro 2.26 dual boots quicker than a 2.26 quad with nearly double ram, and other things such as the screen will be hard to beat with another laptop. so YES YES YES AND ANOTHER YES, now i will just sit here and wait to be called a fan boi

You can run Mac OS as it's i386
The price of Mac's just doesn't cut the mustard since you can spec up a Windows system for about 1/3, there are things Macs are better @ as always has been but for the average user this doesn't come into consideration.

Nook Color vs. Elocity A7

Hey guys I just saw this
(Since I cannot post links go to BJ's website and look up "Elocity 7")
Its specs look pretty good plus it has an HDMI output and it already runs froyo. Do you guys think it would be work returning my nook color for one of these? Or do you guys think that the lack of third party support (meaning xda) means that in the long run the nook would be better than the elocity?
The reasons I was considering it was because of the tegra 2 chip, froyo, and the 1080p hdmi output(it would be nice to hook this thing up to our projector and watch movies off of it). Honestly I don't need those features but they would be nice. Thanks.
That thing is $369.99 according to Amazon.com. Also it is currently out of stock.
The NC is currently available at any Barnes and Noble at the cost of $250
tldr; NC is cheaper and available now.
The nookcolor has a higher resolution screen - something I would consider to be important.

Yea I have to admit the screen on the nook is very nice... However while I do care about the screen quality I also have to take into account the rest of the features.

While the Tegra 2 sounds nice, if the screen was on par with the NC I would flinch, but it isn't, so the "extras" cant make up the fact its not as readable as the cheaper NC Ereader. I personally have a TV with USB inputs, so HDMI out isn't the happnin feature it all cracked up to be. Once we are Froyo'd, CM6'd, and OC'd to 1.2, I think most of us will be happy as clams
That's just generally the tough call though. While the camera and HDMI are cool, they're not incredibly important. The tegra chip is huge though. If you go for the A7, you're getting a smaller battery and a way worse screen i'm sure. My thing is, I only want to do two things, play games, and read comics. Based on those two requirements alone can anyone suggest which would be better? I'm really torn on this. I think the Nook color is much better looking and the build quality is probably better, but i'm really not interested in reading ebooks at all, comics yes, books no. For me it's purely a tablet device. I know that there is a lot of progress being made on the NC...I guess what i'm asking is, can anyone confirm or deny that they feel the graphics hardware will eventually make me regret picking a NC over the A7?
For that price, you might as well just get Notion Ink's Adam tablet!
$375 for the Wifi only LCD version. Should be shipping out soon too.
Much better specs and a decent screen (10" 1024x600).
Dual Core A9 with Tegra 250, 1GB memory
I don't know about the OP, and i'm not trying to hijack their thread-just looking for similar input. I really like the Adam tablet, but I want a 7 inch tablet. So it's really between the NC and the Elocity for me. I have to decide if sacrificing build quality for a tegra is worth it.
BJs is selling it for $299:
http://www.bjs.com/webapp/wcs/store..._src=14110944&ci_sku=121648111&sc_cid=DF#more
Now, I have a little buyers remorse :T

Yeah, I thought about it. I ordered the Elocity, and then promptly attempted to cancel my order. The only category that the elocity beats the nc in my opinion is tegra, but that's because I don't care about BT, camera, or HDMI out. I prefer the build quality, size, bezel, screen, and battery on the NC. So that's the one i'm going with.
I was trying to decide on the same
I ordered the elocity:
Rationale for me is:
I own an iphone. It's biggest failing for me is the absence of flash.
I have owned but will be returning a g tablet from viewsonic that also is tegra 2 based.
The thing is fast and can easily run full screen flash video without a hiccup.
For me I want this device to be a:
internet and i mean full internet browser
an E-reader
mail and office device
and to have many apps like games news productivity....
The Nook color will not have a way of using another keyboard since no bluetooth or usb.
The processor is way underpowered for flash. Heck flash was stuttery on a galaxy tab.
As far as form factor the specs are near identical in size of A7 and nook
The single button for nook is also an issue unless u do a loto of hacking.
The A7 will have the ability to run honeycomb when it is out and so will have a longer practical lifespan.
The only things better on the nook are the screen though it is unclear yet if the elocity screen will be good or very good (videos of a similar device rebranded seemed to show good viewing angles) and 4 vs. 8 gb of storage (for me not a deal breaker with 16Gb sd cards costing 30$). now sure 800x480 is not as good a resolution, but this is a 7 not 10 inch tab so I am not sure it will make much of a difference. After all this is still better than DVD resolution so should be fine for reading and web.
As for battery life, I think the difference i s 4000 vs 3200 in favor of nook so not a huge difference real life we are looking at probably 1 hour difference, but A7 has ambient light sensor so could be better at battery saving
A7 has ability to output hdmi, so can bring hi def movies downloaded to people homes and watch on their TV
Has webcam to enable videochat
Has bluetooth for connectivity and most importantly the newes latest processor that ensures a much longer time before obsolescence.
Finally from what I read Elocity will have an open source ui which will allow people to really customize it
Yea I would say the biggest thing going for the A7 is the out of box stock froyo so it is easy to customize and things just work for it and the terga 2 is only the second most important. The Nooks processor should be able to watch hd video if it gets optimized.
but wont be able to run flash which for me is a deal breaker
for 399 would rather get ipad with 16gb bluetooth appstore bigger great screen better battery life
but no flash.....

I agree... but BT would be the only thing I wish we had.
Having said that, I feel (IMHO) that Bluetooth is just around the corner. Someone will somehow find a way to use the Droid X drivers and get use of the SoC which presumably has bluetooth capability.
Who knows... maybe B&N might surprise us all and include it in their 2.2 update. Now wouldn't that be a nice belated christmas gift?

My nokia n900 has an A8 clocked at 600mhz (while stock) only 256 RAM, and runs flash like a champ. NC may not run it out of the box, but with 2.2 around the corner, via a custom ROM or an official update from BN, this device will run flash, and it will run it well.
update: crap, BJs already sent out my A7 even though I tried to cancel my order. Well, now I have a boxed NC and A7 for xmas, and one of them has to go back. uggghhh

I hope it works out for you. Personally, after using my netbook off an on (only used away from the house) I find 1024x600 pretty small for web surfing, much less 800x480. Most phones run this resolution with a 3"-4" screen.

"Q: If I add an emulator for Super Nintendo, is the screen capable of having multi-touch so that I can run with one hand and jump with the other?
A: Yes, you can install the Super Nintendo emulator, but some of the games may not work properly."
or how about this one?
"Q: Is the touch screen multi-touch?
A: The A7 Tablet supports Multi-Touch functions. The built-in browser and photo viewer support zooming in/out by two of your fingers. However, multi-touch functionality on many third party apps is not supported."
I think they are basically saying that it is application dependent, and not to come crying to them for support if/when third party applications don't work as expected.

Kogan Agora Tab

Hey guys, just saw a mini-review for this tab in the tech section of my tv guide:
http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/7-inch-tablet-pc-android/
Its made by Australian company kogan (known for making LCD tv's).
It sports a capacitive touchscreen (only 800x480), android 2.3, a 1 Ghz Arm Cortex A8 based processor, 512 mb of DDR2 ram, a HDMI output, a micro sd and mini Usb input, wifi, accelerometer, and a 2.0 megapixel front facing camera...
all for only $152 AUD (usually $189 AUD)...
basically, i just wanna know if you guys think this'll challenge our nook's current title of the best cheap tab?
EDIT: it also has a built in mic

Nah, I think for this reason alone people are just not going to want to buy it. 800 x480 on a 7in screen? Heck no, that's just gross This is the only problem these cheaper Tabs have... horrible screens. I wish I was a tech junky that knew how to replace screens xD
no gps, no compass ... no care.
I bought the NC to see if I liked Android... now I have an android phone too. There is no way I'll buy another android anything without all sensors because so many incredible applications require them.

you know you can edit the build.prop to change the resolution right?
It has everything and the kitchen sink, but that is a pretty atrocious DPI, and the Achilles' heel on these cheap models tends to be the battery: we're talking 90min-3hours, typically. It's going to come down to just how capacitive that touch screen really is, how fast/stable the OS runs, and what you plan to do with the thing. If, like a lot of NC owners, reading is anywhere near the top of your list, that screen takes this tablet right off the table.

The build.prop can't add pixels that just aren't there.

Dream Tablet/Reader?

I've got a nook because I feel like it's the best combo of features. Still its a little small, a little slow, and I cant read it in the sun (I primarily use it to read).
What I would piss my pants for is a 8-8.6" transflective screen, with a current generation single core processor, 10+ hours of battery life, wifi-only, and of course rootable. I don't want to pay for a camera. I don't want to pay for a GPS receiver. I want this for $300.
I'd like to mention that dead trees are the best, before recommending the Amazon Kindle. I have a k2i and find it excellent for reading.
I attacheda matte screen protector. It makes a world of difference.

Dream Tablet? Ok here we go:
Looks the same as my Nook Color does now. The aesthetics are great, its easy and comfy to hold and very thin. Here is what I would add if physics would allow me to
Tegra2 <-- Although I am very happy with the CPU that it has now.
2GB RAM (Sure 1GB is fine, but the chipset can address 2GB so why not?)
USB Port (full sized)
2nd MicroSD slot because, well, we can.
Kickstand
Nook OS (Stock) based on Honeycomb, but with full market access.
Bluetooth enabled at the factory - B&N to sell a nice looking bluetooth keyboard.
This is key: I do not want the dimensions altered in any way. It must be the exact same W H L that it is now, just with a few extra ports and some real power under the hood.

I don't know if it's breaking 10 hours or has root yet, but it sounds like the Vizio tablet comes a bit closer to what you want than the NC. Reviews mention lag in the UI, but reports are that a software update smoothed things out considerably.

The problem with dead trees and the print thereon is that you can't find all of the NY Times 100 best sellers just lying around in the street, in the way you can find epubs floating on the interweb thingy.

I think you're in the right area.
If that's all what you asked for, then the NOOKcolor is the perfect one for you.
It's single core processor, it's wifi only, it's nootable, it has no camera, it has no gps, it's $250 new. If you turn everything off but reading, you will get 8 to 10 hours run. It's only 7" but the tradeoff is it's surely lighter than 8+" one.
