[Droid] [Q] Deleted too many system files after root? - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

I recently rooted my Droid 1 with One Click and now have Super User access. From there I grabbed an Milestone Overclocking app to simplify speeding up the phone, (as I have mentioned in other threads I am completely out of my element with phones since they don't have a internal combustion engine) as well as Root Exlorer from the market. Then I went into the world of deleting .apk files that I had read here that were unnecessary and completely safe to remove. Along with those I also got rid of, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Amazon MP3. Since this I have not been able to get past "Getting Driving Directions" on my Navigation. I have checked with others I work with and they had some issues as well with Navigation over the past week. Both Droid 1 and 2 users reported the same issues of screen stall to me. As of Friday one of the users of Droid 2 let me know that his Nav was once again working properly, mine is still not. Did I overdo it on deleting and get rid of something that is causing this problem? My Maps still give proper directions from my location, (no matter where I am at the time of testing) but once going into Nav, stalls. If I did get rid of too many how can I get those files back to my phone so everything works again as desired? I am now left with the following .apk files (.odex files as well):
Account and Sync Settings
Applications Provider
Bluetooth
Browser
Calculator
*Calendar Google
*Calendar Provider
Camera Google
Cert Installer
Contacts
Contacts Provider
Corp Cal (what does this do exactly?)
Default Container Service (job of this?)

Droid Email Policy (Read it, can I get rid of it?)
Email Google
Gallery 3D Google
Genie Widget
Google Backup Transport
*Google Calendar Sync Adapter
Google Contacts Sync Adapter
Google Feedback
Google Partner Setup (Purpose of this?)
Google Services Framework
HTML Viewer
Kickback (Can I safely kill this? Have never enabled it)
Launcher2
Maps
Market Updater
Media Provider
Media Uploader (no .odex with this one)
Mms
Music google
Network Location
One Time Initializer (Purpose?)
Package Installer
Phone
Phone Config
Pico TTS (I use Vlingo, can I delete this as well?)
Program Menu
Program Menu System
Protips (Use?)

Settings Provider
Setup Wizard
Sholes Quick Office (no .odex)
Soundback (no .odex)
Sound Recorder
Superuser
Telephony Provider
User Dictionary Provider
Vending (Use?)
VPN Services
(*) I never input any events into my calendar, but I do like to look ahead at times for planning reasons, do I need all these?
Alright, I will leave you all alone and continue being a gearhead, drinker and general knuckle-dragger until more questions of me are asked or answers are available, thank you all again for all of your help!

hmm....i delete over 100 apps from delfy but if you delete all of it you will lost may fuctions

You wiped too much. Some apps are both app (as per UI for user) as data providers for certain functionality. You can tell that by looking in Manifest but you have to have enough knowledge to judge. Rule of tumb is to always move stuff off-side (i.e. to SD card folder) and not removing directly as you got no way back in case of failure, especially sometimes you may find out something does not work far too late. I wiped crap like GMail or Navigation and other 3rd party useless apps but I'd suggest to stay away from removing apps that may offer ecosystem functionality. Potential savings (like 200KB) vs time wasted on restoration is simply not worth for most cases.
Corp Cal - Corporate Calendar. Requires Exchange server. Probably safe to remove but again - do you *really* needs that to be removed?

Thank you for the info. Where would I be able to find all the original system apps so that I can add them all back and delete more carefully next time?

Few More Questions

Before the flaming, I have read and searched many threads before posting.
Reading over the manual:
1. Can you select / Install google maps instead of bing maps like on HD2?
2. If not on Bing maps, does your location auto move as you move, similar to GPS?
3. Never used Zune, does it allow you to sync contacts? not important just interesting to know.
4. For those who have synced to google calendar, is it smooth and fully function? or have you noticed issues?
5. Reading about SRS, many say you have to install an app, according to manual, its in the HTC hub section already installed? which one do we use?
6. Not sure where but I read that future updates will be done auto and not force your phone to be reset to factory default like we currently do with HD2, can this be confirmed? any one know ?
I hate doing updates on HD2, having to re-sync and recreate email accounts and settings, if they do updates without having to reset to factory, such as the new Droid OS does, would be a very easy way to function.
Thank you in advance.

1. Currently, only Bing maps is available on the phone, as all primary mapping services also only use Bing (so far). I have yet to come across any apps that use Google Maps, yet.
2. If an application uses the GPS regardless of whether it is using Bing, or Google, or neither, it works the same way where it tracks your location... hence the point of GPS.
3. Zune is for syncing media only at this point. It does not sync your Outlook/Windows/desktop contacts, and currently there is no 'official' way of doing this. Windows Phone 7 relies heavily on the cloud and Exchange server services (Windows Live, Gmail, etc.)
4. Using Google Calendar on the phone is rather simple and straightforward, aside from the limitation that Windows Phone 7 can only currently see your primary calendar only.
5. The SRS and Dolby sound enhancements are HTC-device specific only. You would download the application from the HTC Hub on the Marketplace, which you can only see if you are browsing the Marketplace on an HTC device.
6. Updates are pushed by Microsoft, and not necessarily the carrier (but certainly possible). You are correct that they work more as patches to the system rather than requiring full system re-installs.
I should add that, having been through the hard-reset process recently, getting the phone back to how I had it was fairly straight forward, although there were a couple of time-consuming things:
- set up APN (not needed if you're using an operator-locked phone with the operator's SIM)
- set up WiFi
- Enter Windows Live login details
- Enter Gmail login details
- Enter Facebook details
- Link Gmail contacts with Facebook ones -- most are done for you, but I had about 15 I had to manually link out of 250 contacts.
- Redownload apps. Apparently if you get the apps via Zune Desktop, this happens for you when you resync, but if you've bought/downloaded them via Marketplace, you have to manually redownload.
The bold steps were the time consuming ones. I also lost all saved games, which is frustrating.
Guys thank you for the great and fast responses.
Still a bit confused on the SRS, so is it an app that comes with the phone already? or one we need to get from Market Place?
Also forgot one main question I wanted to ask...
Does WP7 have or need Task Killer?
I know on Droid u have to dl the app,
WM6 came with it
Wm7? dont see any were in manual, do I assume that this new OS actually shuts things down when u close them like it should?
Thanks.
WP7 puts apps to sleep effectively - I can't remember the term they use off hand, but when you navigate away, if the app doesn't ask you if you want to exit, then it will save the state - dehydrated I think is the term! - so it's no longer running in the background. Then when you go back to it, it's rehydrated.
So no task killer.

Not bad, glad to see them follow nokias foot steps on this one.
I hated having task killer but then again its nice to see what is running in back round and bring up a app or process via that as well.
double edge sword i guess

The app does not come with the phone. The phones do come with HTC Hub though, and through that application, you can view all the other HTC apps, including the Sound Enhancer one, and download it through there. It is also available through the Marketplace (HTC Hub just basically links you to the Marketplace for its downloads).

De-Bloat your XT860

Even though we don't have much in the way of Custom ROMS for our beloved XT860 at this point, you can get rid of much of the bloatware and speed up your device quite a bit.
I must give credit to lifeinanalog and his original post on Android Forums regarding bloatware on the Bell XT860.
I am in no way responsible for anything that you do to your phone. While this has worked great for me, it may not work out the same way for you.
You will need root access: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1240130
And will need Titanium Backup Pro installed: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackupPro&hl=en
Using Titanium Backup Pro, I have frozen the following Apps. Once you reboot your device, they will no longer appear in your app drawer. You can always bring them back by 'un-freezing' them:
Cardock
Citrix receiver
Connected music player (I use an alternate music player)

DLNA
Facebook Authenticator
Flickr Authenticator
Global Unplug
GPS Navigator

This is known to cause problems with your contacts.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. If you've frozen something that has caused problems please mention it here. Likewise, if you have frozen other apps not listed above, feel free to share with the rest of us.
Lastly, if this post helped you, feel free to hit the 'Thanks' button.
Honestly I just used Pete's debloat script. Worked fine for me

There are some apps in your list I hesitate to uninstall, I don't really know what they do.
Did you froze them and nothing significant happen or some are only a feature you don't need?
Phone Portal

I didn't remove any of the apps that I listed - only froze them.
Have had no problems from freezing any of the apps in the OP.
The 'phone portal' does not affect your ability to make calls. From what I have read it is just another way to connect to the device through your computer. See this post here for more detailed information about it: https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/28340
I am not sure what the suggestions apps do, but freezing them hasn't caused any problems.
Zoompass is a mobile payment service and I am assuming zoom mode is related to it. Again no problems from freezing it.

Thanks, didn't realize that the script could also be used on the XT860, thought it was designed for the Verizon D3 only.
Does the script freeze or remove the apps?
I'm hesitant to remove anything because of the lack of an .sbf for the XT860.

I tried doing a manual debloat a while back but didn't really see much performance change. That's why I made those changes to the build.prop files (I posted it under general). My phone is pretty fast, but the battery still really sucks. I think we are all impatiently waiting the XT860 update together!
I manually removed about 50MB of apk's in system/app folder of the 5.7.894 ROM. I did not remove Yahoo and Corporate.
I can't sync the FaceBook and/or Twitter avatars with my address book. Did I remove too many?

Just install/reinstall facebook from market, I've had similar problems with FB a few times and that's always fixed it.
That didn't work unfortunately. I did not get the question what I'd like to sync; none, all contacts, or existing contacts.

About de-bloating:
When I uninstall the blur activesync autenticator I get force-close when I select a contact in the contacts menu.
I can confirm that I do not have the ability to sync Facebook contacts after removing the authenticator (I never synced them to begin with)
I am not have any force close issues with my contacts...

extension for youtube, wikipedia (don't know who is extended here, but if i need those i use my web browser)
extension for google lyrics search (don't care for that)
Exchange Services (suppose it has to do with Microsoft Exchange, which i don't use..)
Face Unlock (very useful feature, people just need a photo of you to unlock your phone, disabled)
Facebook (i'll do my little facebooking with the browser, thanks)
Movies / Devices (got an alternate video player anyway)
gmail (normal mail client is enough for me)
google partner setup (i'm not going to be a google partner)
Google Play Books, Movies, Music (not going to use those)
Google+ (don't need it)
Japanese keyboard layout and skins (not my language so i don't need it, skins won't work for the non japanese keyboard)
MirrorLink Service (Connects your phone to a car, don't need that)
Music unlimited (no idea, doesn't sound important)
News & weather (got my own apps for that)
location based wi-fi (i use wifi rarely and am able to manage that myself, don't allow my phone to locate me all the time anyway)
photo analyzer service (my photos don't need analyzing)
picasa uploader (dont use that service)
Pico TTS (i use only google TTS)
PlayMemories Online (not needed)
SensMe slidshow (sorry its a phone, not a digital photo frame)
Smar Connect (starts stuff if you connect stuff automaticly, doesn't fit my using habits)
Sony car (dont need that)
Sony select (no idea)
Support (thats what forums are for )
Talk (google IM service, don't need it)
Talkback (talks to you about what going on with your phone while using it, my eyes are still fine, so i don't need this practical feature)
TV-App Starter (no TV here that supports it anyway)
Video Studio (sorry, editing videos on a smartphone? no)
visualization (doesn't sound very useful)
weather widget (got a different one)
Xperia Appshare, Calendar sync, FB setup, Friendsmusic, Music Likes, Proxy, Share, Social Engine +photos +sharing, twitter (since i don't use Twitter, Facebook and whatever as native up i don't need any Xperia apps that can work with it)
whatsapp (dont like always on apps, just wastes my battery)

Disable most in the Settings > Apps section. Tedious, but worth it.
For apps that can't be disabled this way, you'll need root and Titanium Backup to freeze them. Always freeze, never uninstall until your ROM is stable after a few reboots.
You can disable all themes and wallpaper picker

Google Drive issue (and other Google apps)

Hi everyone.
I'm at a bit of a loss here. I've had 2 issues with Google apps on this phone. One is regarding Calendar which was force closing as soon as I tried to edit an event. Others on here had the problem and advised a factory reset which I wanted to avoid.
Yesterday however, Google Drive seemed to stop seeing Sheets, Docs etc as when you try to create a new document, those options don't appear. This also means I can't use Drive to edit any document however if I open Docs or Sheets directly I can access the same files and edit them.
I use Drive a lot so I bit the bullet and did a factory reset this morning.
Everything was okay and both apps seemed fine again, however for no apparent reason (I rebooted just now), Drive is broken again.
Calendar is still fixed but I have no idea what's going on. It's like Drive can't see that Docs and Sheets are installed.
Has anyone experienced this or got any ideas?
Aaaaand Google Calendar is broken again. I changed the colour of each if my calendars and unselected my Hotmail calendar. Force closes now every time I try to open an event to edit.
Just checked my Google Drive and it's allowing opening of Sheets files, also never had the Calendar issue, I have multiple shared calendars in action with my account as well.
no problems with either - if you have an o365 account you could install excel and onedrive to see if any issues
The problem isn't that I can't open the files though as if I open the apps Docs or Sheets, they'll open and edit fine. When in the Drive app though, if you try to create a new item, I only get options for an upload, photo or new folder and no sheet. Likewise when clicking on a text document, it opens in the built in Drive viewer but not the Docs editor.
It's like Drive isn't seeing that the other apps are installed.
Very odd. Not sure if it's related to the calendar issues other had. I've tried all sorts of combinations of changing permissions and battery saving etc but to no avail.
So I figured it out and it was my own fault - I was in the Google Play Services beta.... Latest update broke maps showing in other apps (that's what helped me work it out as it gave an error about play services updating) as well as giving my calendar and drive issues.
Posting in case others come across this issue!
That's a definite bummer. I have not yet experienced that. I certainly hope I won't.
One of the first things I did when I got my P20 Pro last Saturday, April 28 was to STOP all auto-updates, including the auto-update of apps.
What I have in mind, if was in the same situation, would be to factory reset the unit. Then deactivate the auto-update feature. I'm not sure if it'll work with others, though.
Have you tried getting in touch with Huawei yet?

So the effect I am getting is when I open the sheet from google drive it shows a previewed sheet, but not actually a valid file you can edit (i.e. it's still using drive not sheets) - you can choose 'open with Sheets' and then it does open in sheets. You can also open the web browser version and it prompts you to 'Use App' with a button. I can't get it to open into Sheets without an additional tap - it definitely did before...
If you look at the recent reviews, it's not just P20 pro which has issues with maps

How to get google notifications working without gms or sketchy downloads

Hey guys, long time lurker around xda and after purposely getting a huawei gms-less phone to see how it would go I ran into some frustrations learning that apks from the playstore whether from downloads or aurora store app etc, nothing would deliver notifications. My huawei is a nova7se but I had a friend test this on his and it is working as well so I presume it works for all huawei/googleless devices to a point.
The goal of this was to find a way to get notifications from playstore apps such as discord, outlook email , banking apps etc. This is not a replacement for google services apis needed for games or google apps which rely on services framework to operate in general.
A few things
-MUST BE CLEAN GOOGLE-LESS PHONE**
-Does not need root/bootloader unlocked
-Does not need sketchy downloads from random sites formatting recovery/ota/hisuite backups etc
-Mostly all open source
-Easily reversible and minimal risk
-All done through phone without additional mods or adb
-Not all apps will work for notification services for this depending on how the original developer team wrote the app to handle this situations. For example: discord, outlook, capital one bank, chase bank, apps work but protonmail did not want to connect to microg for notifications and I have not been able to successfully trick it to connect to it yet)
- APKS MUST BE FROM PLAY STORE ORIGINALLY. Using fdroid variants or personal stuff probably wont work since those packages did not rely on google notification services. I know some apps have a standalone apk you can download externally from the source but it may differ in its functionality.
-THIS IS NOT GOOGLE PLAY SERVICES AND WILL NOT MAKE GOOGLE APPS WORK. The reason it is not working for your google apps and games is because it was never supposed to. Dx
**By "google-less" phone I am referring to not having any leftover packages from attempting to install gms on the device. Google packages conflict with microG and will not be compatible. If you have used lzplay or other methods to attempt to get some form of playstore working, then you will most likely have google packages installed somewhere even if it failed to get GMS working perfectly. Keep this in mind if you get installation issues. Ideally if you are not using the phone as a daily, factory reset it to original settings if possible to ensure cleanest install if you want to pursue this.
STEP 1)
Download microG apps.
-microG services core
(optional)
- **microG services framework proxy
- **microG droidguard helper (? no idea if this is needed but was in my downloads for microg testing)
**the services framework proxy and droidguardhelper were part of the original experiment but later on I managed to get notifications running without needed either one of these.
Easiest way is to use fdroid store app and to add in microg repo found here.
https://f-droid.org/
https://github.com/microg/android_packages_apps_GmsCore/wiki/Downloads
Step 2)
Open microg settings app - self check
-Signature spoofing will not work because we have no access to anything on the phone system wise
-Installed packages should have "playservices gms core installed" and "services framework installed" checked only (see picture)
-Grant permissions and select to ignore battery optimization (so the service is not closed in background)
Step 3)
MicroG settings main menu
-Turn on google device registration
-Turn on google cloud messaging
-Turn on google safetynet (probably is not actually doing anything but turn it on for good measure)
-Add google account (Does not appear to be needed since it did not do anything specific relating to notifs)
Step 4)
Download aurora store.
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.aurora.store/
or
https://gitlab.com/AuroraOSS/AuroraStore
Fdroid route is easiest if you used it to install microg apps.
(Why aurorastore? Why not? The main reason is because it accesses google play store apps which inturn are the apks which are known to use google play services for notifications. Downloading an apk from another origin might not be the playstore version making it not really work with this process)
Step 5)
Download apps as needed with aurora store,
In phone settings, make sure you disable auto management of background apps.
Settings-battery-applaunch. Set apps like outlook, discord etc to manual and turn all settings to on (auto launch/run in background/secondary lauch).
Optional step 6) In aurora store settings , add microg apps to blacklist so aurora store does not try to update microg with play services which will erase micro g and give you a systemless apk of play services which does absolutely nothing.
Thats basically it. I was so caught up on trying to find ways to break into my nova 7se's bootloader and attempted to sideload microg for authentic playstore functionality and playservices but as long as notifications are working, aurora store + notifs is all the functionality I need.
No offense to those offering other ways to add in gms to huawei phones but as a security minded individual, it seems like too much of a risk to use randomly hosted internet files overwriting system functionality.
If you go into microg settings and under "google cloud messaging" you can see which apps are being monitored for notifications. Once I restarted my device, its status turned to disconnected but still catches notifications for outlook and discord as I tested. This is not using microg as a replacement for playservices because again this is ONLY FOR NOTIFICATION USAGE in this implementation.
Hope this helps anyone who wants to be able to use some google play apps but had notification issues.
It is not working as i kept getting error to install microG Services Core due to "Failed to install due to an unknown error" on my Huawei P40 Pro

If you have any google core packages installed (even as regular systemless apps) or leftovers from previous attempts at getting gms installed then it will conflict with microg installation since it sees it as a conflicting app. This requires a clean almost factory emui without any remnants of google installation attempts. Ill update the initial post for that bit of info.
This is only for notifications, right?
I mean, this doesn't allow you to use YouTube, Gmail, Keep etc...?
i did played with microG Services as well befire... but ended up in still having the original play services installed, did tested now again with microG services and now, outlook, whatsapp, Microsoft Authenticator and Launcher only force closes... what ah mess

Correct. I stumbled upon this accidentally while trying to figure out a way to enable 'oem unlock' in my nova7se since huawei blocked even adb shell sysprop access to change the setting. Its not a full implementation of microG and probably is not intended to be used this way but it gets notifications through which is a plus when pulling apks from play store. Theres no xda forum for the nova7se but figured Id share it here D:

Yea unfortunatly any attempts with getting original play services installed sort of messes with this. Preferably a clean install/phone reset is ideal starting point. App wise you might have to clear cache and data so it 'resets' which is almost the same as uninstalling and reinstalling the apps. You will still get the message that "this app wont function without play services" since you cant spoof it entirely and on some you might have to find the setting to turn notifications off and back on in the app themselves. If it shows up on microG's setting under 'google cloud messaging' option, it is working. Ive been using the nova7se for a couple days now testing it as a daily user, restarted it occasionally and things are functioning similar to regular android phones(notification wise). Just be sure to allow the app to run in background so the system battery saver/app launch process does not turn it off.
as i say'd i did played a little bit with microG services, but for example, even when reinstalling the apps afterwards, whatsapp does start, and you need to relogin, but on the restore backup screen nothing more happens, only loading forever, when microG Services are installed..
another interessting i found out right now, when the apps force closes, when putting the phone into airplane mode, the apps does open normally!

Oh ok I get what you are talking about now. Backup functionality (for whatsapp) I believe uses google drive account which microG in this sense is not going to provide. Just a friendly reminder that this process is for push notifications only and not google api usage. provided by play services

maybe i found there a bug of whatsapp... as whatsapp trys to find google drive... but does not work correctly it loads forever... for some reason it looks like it ah hidden error message or something like this... i hit back a couple of times, and closed whatsapp and reopend, and suddenly i saw the no backup found page... anyway still all this is BS, i really hate huawei for not unlocking the bootloader, and let us just do what we like to do... there wouldn't even be an issue with GMS anymore as we simply could flash openGapps
So, you did found a new way, GMS + HMS enabled with no notification error? Am i right?

So the statement is a bit misleading, this is not really GMS but its a way to use 3rd party play store apps that would not give notifications because of play services missing. This will only cover the notification portion of apps/apks originally found in the playstore that require notifications through play services push notifications. I have not touched HMS or anything else but this basically inserts a listener under microG to monitor push notifications and deliver them as needed. Again this does not resolve the issue of missing google APIs found in the full GMS package and is not intended to do so. Strictly notification wise for apps that need them.
Personally I used aurora store to get apks from playstore without needing playstore installed (because playstore version apps are looking to use googles push notification services) but how those apps function is another story. For example: Youtube/maps/google pay etc will not work as they need google apis. But 3rd party apps like discord, outlook email, and banking apps like capital one etc do work. Games might not because they might want play games api which is not present here since this is not GMS. (Tried to fun cytus 2 and a few other games and it wouldnt start since license check fails by default)
To my knowledge this will not work with any other GMS procedure attempted so you cannot combine this with a working GMS hacked install since you will have a version of play services and gsf framework active. Think of this as another alternative entirely in a way if you want to not risk questionable modifications and want to stay on default HMS software. Idk what the future holds as huawei seems to block ways to get GMS on phones after they become popular so I see this as an alternative to the unknown with pulled playstore apks functioning as they should.
GMS and this fix won't cooperate.
I've been using this for a while, but sadly not apps are giving me notifications. Reddit for example is not sending anything to my phone.
I did a factory reset on my P40 Pro followed the guide and when you wrote to add an account I do so, I press Agree and then it stays on
Just a sec
Your device is contacting Google to
save information on your account
This can take a couple of minutes
Sorry
There was a problem communicating with Google Servers
Try again later.
And anything like games that use google to login it fails too

Unfortunatly for something like that theres too many factors at play to trouble shoot that from my end. I would say to try a different default browser/vpn it etc as it could be any number of reasons why google servers arent connecting for it. Games that use google wont work because this is not google play services replacement. This was only intended for getting notifications working with most* apps that rely on a simple push notification service through google play services. Unfortunatly this isnt a guarentee depending on the app itself and where its pulled from . This was why I use/suggest aurora store since its pulling the playstore version of the app which almost always relies on google services for notifications.
Some apps like discord, outlook etc have a manner of continuous notification scanning in the background processes to try to get itself to connect to a push service even if they give you the error that "the device does not have google services and might not work properly". I can confirm those are working as are my banking and authenticator apps. I had an issue with proton mail specifically where it wouldnt attempt another push notification check to register with microg like the previous apps and wont recieve notifications. Its not a magic bullet but helps where it works.

Thanks for the info
I still can't open google related apps like youtube or google app itself... Even with Vanced youtube, it is hard to keep up because I can't log in, so i can't have my subscriptions and updates. Also certain games can't be played because the data are connected to my Google Play

..So does the MicroG method still work in 2021 or with the latest version of the OS?

Yes it does work with EMUI11.
Only advantage it's easier to install and Get push Notification and not mush else.
Now This is the only way you can install with Vanced Manager
