updated my HTC hero on sprint to the most recent OTA software update. not firmware, software. it was rooted before but I forgot to unroot before updating. root permissions are now completely jammed/locked up. tried to unroot, no good. tried to re-root, no good. I'm in a state of mid-rootedness. please help. I'm gonna go crazy trying to figure this out myself.
Run an RUU and reroot?
how you do dat? lol sorry I'm kind of a noob to rooting.

That works on the newest hero rom.
I don't know how to run all that stuff. how do you fix it without installing an extra ****-ton of software?
This is why you should read about rooting before you actually root the phone. Run the RUU like suggested, that is the only way you're going to be able to downgrade and root your phone.
Please post in the Q&A section next time when you have a question like this.
Run this:

the damn thing wont install on my phone. any ideas? it keeps stopping every time I launch the installer. then after about 30 minutes it wont do anything. so I abort it and try again, yet to fail once more.

You don't install it on your phone... You run it inside of Windows, and then follow the instructions.
I did rum it on windows. it just keeps going not making any progress at all.

Hi guys, I'm new to Android, swaped my 3Gs for a N1, I manually updated the phone to FW 2.3.3 (GRI40), the phone is stock, no root, no custom firmware.
The phone randomly loses network connectivity, (no network available message on display) I can't connect using 3G but I can with Wi-Fi, can't make phone calls, only way to fix this is to reboot the phone or switch airplane mode on/off.
I have radio version 5.08.00.04, kernel 2.6.35.7-59423-g08607d4.
I like this phone and don't want to swap it for an iPhone 4, but this issue is starting to get on my nerves, please let me know if there is a fix for this.
Root and flash cm7.2. Has more goodness than others. Then flash Inexus theme to make it eyecandy when look at and google apps package.

BTW - this is one of many options.
Theres a lot of eager people who (perhaps incorrectly) think CM is the answer to everything...

Ok, I tried everything and nothing seems to work, I reverted back to FRG33, but I can't root the device, everything fails, I can't go back to EPE76 or something else, I get the old version error.
I can't update to 2.2.1 or anything higher than that (including moded GRI40 versions) because I get the signature error.
Basically I can only install FRG33 or GRI40 (stock FW), the phone works fine on FRG33 but I would like to be able to install 2.2.2 (FRG83G i think), cause the 2.3.3 is just crap, reminds me of some older iPhone firmwares.
So, what should I do, cause i'm out of ideeas, please keep in mind that this is my first android phone when you explain something.
Thanks.
You can either root, or flash the updates one at a time:
FRG33> FRG83> FRG83D> FRG83G> GRI40...

I tried that but it doesn't work, I receive the no signature error.
I got the fw from the wiki.
Strange...
Just for a sanity check, make sure that the files you downloaded aren't a zip within a zip, and MD5 check for integrity...

I checked the archives, everithing is fine, I done a factory reset and tried again with the same result.
I am on FRG33 now (I flashed the rom using passimg.zip copied on the SD), trying to update to FRG83, I got the ROM's from here. I receive this error:
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
This sh**t is driving me mad.
I got bootloader 0.35.0017 and it's unlocked.
You're unlocked?
Are you running a custom recovery (Ra)?
Have you turned signature verification off?

I bought this phone from a guy, and I don't know exactly what he has done with it before but when I go into bootloader (trackball+power) I get a line that says unlocked, I don't know exactly what it means, it's like the one in the attachment.
It means your bootloader is unlocked. Basically, you now have the ability to install images to the phone through fastboot on the PC.

After a few hours of reading and rom download I managed to update 2.2 to 2.2.1 using this rom "766a101ae02c.signed-passion-ota-60505.766a101a.zip" not sure where I downloaded it from but worked like a charm and then I applied the the updates to get to 2.2.2 (FRG83G).
And now, how do I root? I tried SuperOneClick, I installed the USB drivers etc, the software runs, it installs superuser on my phone, the SOC SU test is OK but I installed Terminal on the phone and the SU command returns access denied, also I installed Root Manager and it doesn't start because it doesn't have sufficient permissions, I have no pop-up when opening to grant root access to Root Manager.
Any ideas?
I finally managed to root my phone thanks to Danger-Rat's super easy tutorial you can find here
Thanks for all the help.
I’m running a locked AT&T branded Vivid. I used the RUU that PirateGhost provided containing the “leaked” ICS version (3.26.502.52) to move to ICS. I’m not getting the prompt to update to .56, and using the “dialer trick” isn’t working.
I know that I could use the new RUU direct from HTC to update to the latest, but that’s a full wipe and reinstall. Is there a way to download a copy of the .56 OTA zip file, drop it on my phone, and somehow update from .52 to .56 that way?
If so, what would be the steps involved?
Thanks,
-Brett.
Honestly you are best off wiping everything and running the ruu, I don't believe that it would be a good idea to just put the file on your phone and flash it.

I was in the same situation, and used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529669 to restore to GB. Then installed the update. Very simple, and the restore file is good to have, and the process is worth knowing. I don't see a reason not to do it. It might be just me, but I think most issues and problems arrise from trying to take a shortcut and impatience (the Donner party).
I was in the same situation and all you do is downloading the RUU from HTC website and follow the instructions (pretty much just connect USB and click on the file...) that's very simple and trouble free.

Thanks for the feedback guys. For the record, I was aware of the RUU update process since that's how I got to the "leaked" ICS update (version 3.26.502.52). I was hoping I'd be able to avoid the complete wipe that comes with the RUU update.
As it turns out, i had some time tonight so I decided to just suck it up and use the RUU to update to v 3.26.502.56. I used MyBackup PRO to back up as much as I could since I'm not rooted and the update ran fine. I'm currently installing all my market apps, after which point I'll restore what I can from MyBackup.
Thanks,
-Brett.
Updating to .56 allowed more apps from google play to be available on my device. Noticed this while I was running .52, then saw apps I purchased "reappear"

Okay, so before i go ahead and post this, I'm well aware of where i should be posting it, but i'm apparently a new member and therefore cannot post in the HTC One Development section.
I'm using the T-Mobile HTC One (M7_ul) and i wanted to convert into the Google Play Edition. I took the OTA update from t-mobile that bumped me up to 1.27.531.11, and it took me about an hour to realize that t-mobile decided to block all ways to s-off with that update, and that i would somehow have to get back to .8. My bootloader is unlocked, with TWRP 2.5.0.0. and root. I flashed the Stock Sense 5 1.27.531.8 rom (although rather buggy, i keep getting errors with the phone program abruptly stopping, but its not an issue seeing as im not staying with this rom). Im under the assumption that if i did that, as long as my hboot was still 1.44, i'd be able to use Moonshine or revone to s-off. I tried both, and neither of them were a go. I keep getting an Error-2 with revone, and moonshine gets to Moonshining (10) and then says Error: dont drink and shine. Now i'm not a complete noob when it comes to unlocking and rooting HTC devices, but ive never decided to take that extra step to s-off. everytime i think i have it right, moonshine and revone give me errors. would someone please tell me what im doing wrong, or at least point me in the right direction? please?
Your phone was updated to .11 it's more than just the Rom that was updated, you just gotta wait. I do too my phone came with .11.

I see. so if i'm understanding you correctly, I can't just flash the .8 rom and do s-off, T-Mobile patched it and im screwed?
Yeah that's it, I've read that one person has got it to work but idk if they actually took the ota or not. There would be a workaround if we had an RUU for .7 or .8 but we don't. So I guess we just gotta wait for someone to figure something out.

that's why you can't, you should not have posted in dev section (and not here either but in Q&A) anyway did you try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2398717
You could use HTC dev unlock until then though, just reset everything when s-off does come? That's what I've done and I'll just use s-off to make it look like nothing when (hopefully) it comes around again

This post seems to have eluded me. It doesn't matter at this point, because there's no link in the post for a T-Mobile RUU

I'm unlocked already, I'd just really rather convert completely to the GPE using the mid/cid change method, so if HTC decides to upgrade the One to KLP when its released, I won't have to go back to stock Sense 5 to get the OTA

ask (in the thread not via pm)the author of that guide if flasking a firmware package + stock rom would do and what other steps you would need to take
you can find the firmware packages here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2355814
It says in the op that the firmware zips are unsigned, which means I would have to be S-off to flash them.

those firmwares in that thread are official and signed, so that's why I think you could have a chance of getting it working
Ok I see the signed link now. I have a job interview but when I get back I'll give it a shot and post my results. Fingers crossed!

so updating all you fellas, no method i tried worked I managed to find a stable rom for 1.27.531.7. my thought process was to flash to .7, unroot, reflash stock recovery, relock the bootloader, and try to install the .8 OTA. Didnt work. I tried to bypass, got the OTA .zip from my storage, rebootRUU and flash the OTA firmware. Didnt work either. The progress bar hung at about 75%(i tried this 6 times, same result). so i unlocked the bootloader again, reflashed twrp 2.5.0.0 and had planned on just restoring the nan i made. I didnt realize that when you flash a RUU, even if it doesnt finish, it still formats your /sd/data, so backup was gone, by this point i had already done the wipe expecting it to be there, so through all this, i ended up stuck in twrp with no OS, and for some reason the ADB sideload feature didnt work so i couldnt push a .zip to the phone. after an hour and a half of frantically searching, i just decided to run the .11 official RUU, so after 14 hours, im back to where i started. Wayyyyy more trouble than its worth. just gonna flash a stock rooted 4.3 GPE rom, and when HTC and T-Mobile decide to stop screwing around and push the 4.2.2 update, ill just reflash the RUU.
Thanks for all the help, gents.

Dude, you were doing some serious stuff to your phone, you have to slow down a little. I recommend reading as much as you can before you attempt anything you just did. The reason I am saying this is that, when flashing firmware, the progress bar always sticks at about 75%, that is normal, then you reboot and it finishes the install. You probably got that firmware from the OTA you're talking about installed and didn't know it.

I let it reboot completely about 5 times, and checked the fw version each time. i promise you i didnt get it. I know the bar hanging on the OTA is normal, i had plenty of learning experience with that on the One V
I rooted and installed a custom when I bought the phone when it just came out, rom everything was working well, got bored wanted to upgrade to that kitkat so i went on here and thought that bulletproof room looked kinda neat tried to install it and for whatever reason it failed. so I tried wiping everything and went into recovery mode and tried installing it via sideload after it was done it said it had no OS installed. I've tried to wipe again and tried installing android revolution thinking it was just the rom, it freezes at the installation screen I read around the forums and nothing seems to help. So i came here asking for help. I know you guys are geniuses, help a brother out!
Tried again
So I tried using sideload again, successfully installed bulletproof ROM, It still says No Os installed when I go to reboot it after the installation.
Using hasoon2000's aio tookit to try to flash factory ruu, but no matter what i tried the device can't be recognized, tried uninstalling the device and installing the htc drivers, Also tried letting windows update look for drivers.

i didn't know there was a bullet proof rom, i know uf a bullet proof kernel, anyway either one is not for the sprint phone, that's what caused your problems, only way to fix is to RUU, and don't flash roms from any other forum unless it STATES IT HAS SPRINT SUPPORT.

Thanks, i'll go ahead and try that.
Still didn't work after I locked and did the ruu through the cmd prompt, so I tried using the AIO also didn't work, got frustrated and drove an hour to a sprint store that had technicians. the store around me don't have "technicians". it took him about 10 mins. My htc one is fully functional again.
Bet all he did was run the 4.3 RUU from HTC....I personally would have tried that. The other thing that is a possibility is the phone you got back is not your old phone.
