updated my HTC hero on sprint to the most recent OTA software update. not firmware, software. it was rooted before but I forgot to unroot before updating. root permissions are now completely jammed/locked up. tried to unroot, no good. tried to re-root, no good. I'm in a state of mid-rootedness. please help. I'm gonna go crazy trying to figure this out myself.
Run an RUU and reroot?
how you do dat? lol sorry I'm kind of a noob to rooting.

That works on the newest hero rom.
I don't know how to run all that stuff. how do you fix it without installing an extra ****-ton of software?
This is why you should read about rooting before you actually root the phone. Run the RUU like suggested, that is the only way you're going to be able to downgrade and root your phone.
Please post in the Q&A section next time when you have a question like this.
Run this:

the damn thing wont install on my phone. any ideas? it keeps stopping every time I launch the installer. then after about 30 minutes it wont do anything. so I abort it and try again, yet to fail once more.

You don't install it on your phone... You run it inside of Windows, and then follow the instructions.
I did rum it on windows. it just keeps going not making any progress at all.

My phone is an HTC Hero CDMA Sprint running the latest update. I was talked in to rooting my phone to delete un needed apps, so I agreed and let my friend do it. Everything went fine, no problems. But then I deleted what I thought were nonsense aps, but I think I deleted something wrong because now I can not download from the market, gmail errors out when it tries to sync etc etc. And my friend did not do a back up of my phone (doh slaps hand on head).
I just want to put the phone back like factory. Of course, factory reset didn't really work because the stuff I deleted did not come back...but I figured that would be the case. I just made it worse because now I don't have my file manager to access the SD card and I can't download one from the Market.
I know there has to be some way to download something with my pc to flash the phone back to original, but I can't find it I only seem to find "updates" and I am not sure those will really help.
Can someone please point me in the right direction so that I can get my phone working properly again? Thank you so much!!
Flash a sense rom...that should fix everything..
Search RUU under the hero development section or go to the htc site ( http://www.htc.com/us/support/hero-sprint/downloads/) and get the hero software from there. Running it from either of those will return you to stock.

Just remember that running the RUU will also remove root from the phone...completely stock again...which is what it sounds like you want.

can you do this from your phone only, i.e. BT transfer an RUU flash img and flash it all on the phone, or do you have to USB connect to RUU?

ineresting.... I think you could, but ONLY if you were s-off. You could download the s-off only RUU, bt transfer it, and flash the HERCIMG.zip from hboot.
When running the RUU you do need to be connected to a PC. However, there is an HERCIMG zip RUU that you can run if you are s-off in the dev section and there is also a method posted to unroot without RUU from the sd card in the development section. Search rt100's posts for the second method and it should come up and I'll see if I can find the zip.

Easiest way is htc sync and RUU on pc unfortunately.

I tried both methods and the first failed due to hboot update and the second where you use the zip kept snagging at the file moving to /root saying write protected of read only. I tried this mount -o method but couldn't get root to be chmod only like /sys. Even with SU priv in the terminal emulator no dice. And when I called for upgrade sounded like they want the phone is why I'm little worried, maybe few seconds in the microwave or get it degaussed lol
What has changed?
Wifi connectivity issues should be gone.
Update wiped my downloaded skins, but everything else seems to be the same it was.
Some reported font size changes in some mail apps.

hasn't it been out for quite some time now?
I searched for updates yesterday. There was nothing. I managed to get it updated 5 minutes ago.
I bought mine in eastern eu, living in Scotland atm. According to my knowladge some phones get updates delayed based on location/rom. Correct me if I am wrong, pls

If you have Root'ed your phone, you loose the Root when updating.
See this link.
Is there a way for me to update to 2.30.405.1 ?
Hello,
I'm using the configuration you can see in the attachment, my Incredible S is S-Off , i have installed recovery and it is also Alpharevx rooted. Is there any way for me to install this update without messing everything ? Thanks in advance !

You can installe the update and it woun't mess anything up, exept you loose the Root.
You can also flash the whole ROM from here.
But remember to do a Nandroid backup first - just in case if you need to go back ;-)

Thanks for your answer, the problem is that i have tried to install the update, both OTA and with recovery (install zip from sd card), but both attempts failed. The cause could be the root from what i'm reading on other update threads. I already have a recovery backup so i'm OK.
I used Super One Click to root my phone a few months ago, only to remove most of the bloatware that came on the phone. My phone now keeps trying to update to the new software, usually only once every 24 hours, but the past week, a few days it has automatically tried updating several times throughout the day. Very frustrating.
Obviously it won't update being rooted. However, I removed the bloatware, so I don't care that it is rooted anymore. I figure I can unroot it and then get the update to work. However, using Super One Click again, it won't unroot. It gets the error "Device does not have Superuser!" I can then proceed to root it with SOC and have it be successful, and try again and get the same error. Any ideas?
And I guess, will unrooting allow me to successfully update it anyways? Thanks!
The phone should update if it is rooted. It will not update if you have CWM installed. You will also get all that lovely bloatware installed back during the update.
Your best bet is to get the lgpnst and v8 tot and update manually then root that and remove the bloatware again.
Thanks for the help. I'm very new to this, so I don't really know what you're talking about haha. I see some stuff on tot, but what is the lgpnst? If you could link to that and the v8 tot you are talking about and maybe how to use those, that would be great.

Okay, so before i go ahead and post this, I'm well aware of where i should be posting it, but i'm apparently a new member and therefore cannot post in the HTC One Development section.
I'm using the T-Mobile HTC One (M7_ul) and i wanted to convert into the Google Play Edition. I took the OTA update from t-mobile that bumped me up to 1.27.531.11, and it took me about an hour to realize that t-mobile decided to block all ways to s-off with that update, and that i would somehow have to get back to .8. My bootloader is unlocked, with TWRP 2.5.0.0. and root. I flashed the Stock Sense 5 1.27.531.8 rom (although rather buggy, i keep getting errors with the phone program abruptly stopping, but its not an issue seeing as im not staying with this rom). Im under the assumption that if i did that, as long as my hboot was still 1.44, i'd be able to use Moonshine or revone to s-off. I tried both, and neither of them were a go. I keep getting an Error-2 with revone, and moonshine gets to Moonshining (10) and then says Error: dont drink and shine. Now i'm not a complete noob when it comes to unlocking and rooting HTC devices, but ive never decided to take that extra step to s-off. everytime i think i have it right, moonshine and revone give me errors. would someone please tell me what im doing wrong, or at least point me in the right direction? please?
Your phone was updated to .11 it's more than just the Rom that was updated, you just gotta wait. I do too my phone came with .11.

I see. so if i'm understanding you correctly, I can't just flash the .8 rom and do s-off, T-Mobile patched it and im screwed?
Yeah that's it, I've read that one person has got it to work but idk if they actually took the ota or not. There would be a workaround if we had an RUU for .7 or .8 but we don't. So I guess we just gotta wait for someone to figure something out.

that's why you can't, you should not have posted in dev section (and not here either but in Q&A) anyway did you try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2398717
You could use HTC dev unlock until then though, just reset everything when s-off does come? That's what I've done and I'll just use s-off to make it look like nothing when (hopefully) it comes around again

This post seems to have eluded me. It doesn't matter at this point, because there's no link in the post for a T-Mobile RUU

I'm unlocked already, I'd just really rather convert completely to the GPE using the mid/cid change method, so if HTC decides to upgrade the One to KLP when its released, I won't have to go back to stock Sense 5 to get the OTA

ask (in the thread not via pm)the author of that guide if flasking a firmware package + stock rom would do and what other steps you would need to take
you can find the firmware packages here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2355814
It says in the op that the firmware zips are unsigned, which means I would have to be S-off to flash them.

those firmwares in that thread are official and signed, so that's why I think you could have a chance of getting it working
Ok I see the signed link now. I have a job interview but when I get back I'll give it a shot and post my results. Fingers crossed!

so updating all you fellas, no method i tried worked I managed to find a stable rom for 1.27.531.7. my thought process was to flash to .7, unroot, reflash stock recovery, relock the bootloader, and try to install the .8 OTA. Didnt work. I tried to bypass, got the OTA .zip from my storage, rebootRUU and flash the OTA firmware. Didnt work either. The progress bar hung at about 75%(i tried this 6 times, same result). so i unlocked the bootloader again, reflashed twrp 2.5.0.0 and had planned on just restoring the nan i made. I didnt realize that when you flash a RUU, even if it doesnt finish, it still formats your /sd/data, so backup was gone, by this point i had already done the wipe expecting it to be there, so through all this, i ended up stuck in twrp with no OS, and for some reason the ADB sideload feature didnt work so i couldnt push a .zip to the phone. after an hour and a half of frantically searching, i just decided to run the .11 official RUU, so after 14 hours, im back to where i started. Wayyyyy more trouble than its worth. just gonna flash a stock rooted 4.3 GPE rom, and when HTC and T-Mobile decide to stop screwing around and push the 4.2.2 update, ill just reflash the RUU.
Thanks for all the help, gents.

Dude, you were doing some serious stuff to your phone, you have to slow down a little. I recommend reading as much as you can before you attempt anything you just did. The reason I am saying this is that, when flashing firmware, the progress bar always sticks at about 75%, that is normal, then you reboot and it finishes the install. You probably got that firmware from the OTA you're talking about installed and didn't know it.

I let it reboot completely about 5 times, and checked the fw version each time. i promise you i didnt get it. I know the bar hanging on the OTA is normal, i had plenty of learning experience with that on the One V
