Hi,
I upgraded to Froyo a while ago. I also installed a then-beta version of Voodoo lagfix for Froyo on my phone.
Recently I used BusyBox to grab Root on my phone (files for that were part of the Voodoo version I installed).
Now I've been wondering how my phone would react if I was ever forced to do a hard reset our reset to factory default.
Would the changed file system of the lagfix interfere with that?
Would the lagfix persist past such a reset?
Would I still be easily able to root my phone again to restore a Titanium backup?
Do you have any other recommendations for someone with a recently rooted phone and little experience?
Thanks,
Yin

I rooted my phone galaxy s and installed a lag fix using a youtube video for help a couple of weeks ago. Now froyo is upon us i would like to unroot my phone and remove this lag fix. I though if i went on the mcr scripts app and removed the fix then the lag fix would be gone and then i could just wipe my phone back to factory settings. after doing this and wipeing my phone however. i still have both the superuser permissions and mcr scripts apps on my phone. surely this means i havent unrooted my phone? I am a total noob and so dont have a clue what to do next. Any help would be greatfully apprecciated.

Hey Mad2Ad,
I went to the voodoo irc channel to ask for help. I was told to not worry. Just make sure your lagfix is disabled. When the new firmware comes, it will copy a new firmware/kernal to your phone and erase everything (root, lagfix, etc). So don't worry. But key action > DISABLE LAGFIX before you do anything.

Thanks for the advice jonnie,
How can i be sure ive uninstalled the lagfix though? MCR scripts is still present in applications. When i run the quadrant standard app though my score is 871 whilst it was of course over 2000 after rooting so surely this would mean ive unrooted my phone. I was just under the impression that once ive done that the superuser permissions would dissapper.
Heres the info my phone gives me if it helps.
csc: xajf3
kernel version: 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Ive just installed the latest firmware from kies and im now running
csc:I9000XAJM1
my baseband is now: XXJM1
The MCR scripts and superuser apps have both dissappeared now so im assuming ive de lagfixed and unrooted my phone.
I flashed Froyo the other day using the Scandinavian reg hack in Kies and to be honest I haven't had any problems really. But I was wondering if I should actaully perform a master reset as well?
The only thing is, if I should then I have already rooted and applied OCLF, so should I remove this first?
Thanks!

I would strongly suggest removing the lagfix and ext tools, back up your data etc.
You can leave as root.
I have a Galaxy S which i rooted and installed a lagfix on. I think it was Ryans OCLF i used for the lagfix.
I want to update to the official Froyo available from T-mobile via kies but having lots of problems getting it to connect (as everyone does). I have backed up contacts etc. I havent bothered backing up apps as i just wrote down the settings i have in each one and will just reinstall them after the upgrade.
What im planning on doing was completely resetting the phone back to factory settings and wiping it altogether so i have a clean phone to do the upgrade.
The problems im expecting or want to know how to avoid is with the root and lagfix i have installed. Will doing a factory reset or other reset (hopefully somebody can tell me another way of resetting) get rid of the root and lagfix or do i need to do something manually before wiping the phone? I know of something about the lagfix creating partitions etc so would a factory reset cancel the lagfix or would it cause all sorts of problems?
How do i go about removing the lagfix and resetting to the standard software that came with the phone? Also i have apps that require root so if i unroot the phone will this cause problems when they try to start or will they just not work and not be an issue?
Im not running any custom roms just the original one that came on the phone.
Sorry for all the questions and a rather long first post but im hoping to do this soon as the phone is running like a bag of smelly brown stuff lol.
Disable the lagfix first and then wipe. Root will not go away but I dont think that would be problem.PS. If I would be you I would just use odin to upgrade, there is plenty of good guides including how to use odin
Undo lagfix before any firmware upgrade .Then factory reset then go to Kies .
Remove lagfix as per the instructions with whatever lagfix you used .
Unroot not a problem its only a user administrative rights fix giving you greater access .
Personally i undo anything i can before an upgrade .

Yes i would definitely undo everything before upgrading its just a question of how i do it.
I used Ryans OneClickLagFix app that was on the market at the time but now it has been altered because it allowed you to root and google didnt like this. I still have the original version i downloaded on the phone so is it just a case of clicking on "remove lagfix" and that will sort it?
Also if the root remains on the phone after i have wiped it, will this cause any problems when i put froyo on it? Is there not a different method or file for rooting froyo to the one i have used on 2.1?
on "remove lagfix" and that will sort it?
Correct .

Also click Remove Ext2 Tools, and the go into the Scheduler changer and return it to CFG and uncheck the tweak buttons, if you messed with any of that.
In which order should i do all of those?
Should i remove the ext2 tools and return cfg settings etc to default before i remove the lagfix or after?
So just a quick update.
Something went totally wrong the other night on its own. This is before i had even thought of upgrading that night. Was sitting on facebook happily playing away when it started force closing within a few seconds of opening. Tried to open the market to reinstall the facebook app and the market force closed in a few seconds. It did this with every app including the email and phone etc. Even the RyansOCLF would forceclose so i couldnt remove the lagfix or unroot etc. All my settings for apps and launcher pro settings had disappeared. Only a couple of icons i had set on the home screen of launcher pro remained but i couldnt use any of them. All my phone logs were there and so were my texts etc but everything else had reset. When i tried to reapply some of my settings and then restart the phone, when i had finished the restart the settings i had reapplyed had defaulted again. Disaster!!
The only thing i could do was run a factory reset from the options menu. I crossed my fingers hoping this wouldnt brick the phone and alas it worked perfectly. Sorted out kies and connected the phone and installed 2.2.1 android. The lagfix had been cleared by the factory reset. I keep wondering if this is why i had so many problems with it taking ages to start up before. Maybe because the lagfix never really worked properly it never fully rebuilt the file system so was removed easily? Although the benchmarks were coming up double the speed of the fastest device on the results so not too sure how it was performing so fast with a duff lagfix...who knows. Anyway got it all up and running and rooted and lagfixed using the voodoo fix. Stuck launcher pro on setup everything. Got the apps i previously purchased reinstalled and restored any apps i wanted from titanium backup. Works like a dream and alot better memory usage aswell.
Thanks for all the help guys but it seems although i didnt follow any of the instructions you all posted (not out of choice...just because the phone physically wouldnt let me) it seemed to get the upgrade done without any problems.
I seem to have a recurring problem with my root on the FireFly 2.8 rom, though it may have been present on Serendipity and I never noticed.
My problem is this: Before I flashed FireFly, I used Odin to revert to stock 2.1, master cleared, and then rooted using the One Click Galaxy S root, which worked fine. I was able to flash the rom using CWM and Titanium Backup as well as other apps that require root said they had proper permissions.
At some point, I do not know where, I lost my root. Now, when I try to use Titanium Backup or Firefly fixes, the app tells me Root access FAILED.
I have superuser as well as the current busybox. Can anyone help me with possibly telling me how to enable my root or how to reroot if necessary?
I have tried z4root but it never does anything anymore.
And when I try to use the One Click Root again I can not click "reinstall packages" because I am taken to CWM instead of regular recovery.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
You probably converted system to ext4. Go back into Recovery and go to the features of whatever kernel u are using and reapply root.
Sent from my Captivate running Continuum 4.0 with Onix 2.0.5.
I was neveraware you had to reroot after converting the system to EXT4. Worked like a charm though! Thanks for your help.
#1 in CWM "reinstall packages" is the 2nd option down! called "apply update.zip" (kinda makes sense doesnt it?)
#2 if you have CWM you can root without one click root.
boot to CWM recovery> Clockwork Features > root + install superuser
adv
Edit: Nevermind, looks like someone already solved your problem while I was typing my BS out.

You don't normally have to....
I has this same problem with FireFly 2.8. I never had that issue with older versions of FF. But, as mentioned, if you reapply root in CWM, it works again.
I love the FF themes, and stability, but I may go back to FF 2.6. FF 2.7 had charging death for me, and FF 2.8 I have issues with keep the lights on. That's how I found my root issue. Now, with the root fixed, keep the lights on seems to disable itself after a while. Definately after every reboot it turns back off. I never had this issue before with cog, perception, or any of the earlier FFs.

Your rom probably came with a kernel that implemented lagfix upon first boot. It happens if you manually apply lagfix as well and re-rooting in CWM works like a charm all the time.

All the FireFly versions I have used have the lagfix optional, and applied through CWM, but 2.8 is the first one that applying the lagfix affected the root of the ROM. I also didn't have this issue with Cognition or Perception, both of which apply the lagfix on first boot.
So the kernel is the issue, not the ROM? A different kernel may fix this?

Yes and no. losing root from converting system to ext4 or back to rfs, can happen with any kernel, and for the charge death that was the onix kernel in those versions. The keep the lights on, does that kernel have bln options in cwm? I use sp voodoo do idk.
i have never lost root converting my system
but i havent converted it in over a month. Just leave it EXT4 when i upgrade/change roms.
havent had any problems not converting it so i dont bother. (except going to stock)
but when i used to convert back and fourth every flash out of fear... NEVER LOST ROOT
I've only lost root converting on Continuum but never on FireFly or Apex so not sure if it is kernel or rom.

Yes FF 2.8 has bln options in CWM. I have issues with bln active or disabled (in FF 2.8). I have not tried managing the bln with the app from the market, would that make a difference (vs managing bln in CWM)?

Ok, so I have a stock 2.2 FW and I have really bad lag, especially with text messages. So I installed the OCLF from the market, installed the exttools, rooted the phone and did the lagfix v2. It didn't fix the lag. I still had the same exact problems as before. So others suggested using a ext4 kernal. However, my phone can't get into recovery or download mode. I have a phone I find out that will eventually have the shutdown problem. So I decided I would just trade the phone in.
However..the OCLF that has an unroot option..doesn't work for 2.2. So can't do this till I unroot. I thought about using the ADB Tools, but without a 2nd way to get into recovery/download, I didn't want to risk this.
Is there a different market app that can unroot since ryzes doesn't work? Also..any reason why the lag fixes wouldn't work at all? I mean..i get a text message..entire phone freezes for a good minute..recieve 2 back to back..yeah stuck for a while. Also..since I uninstalled the lagfix and ext tools..however..now I can't download any apps with error of insufficient space...I have 9 gigs free.
Anyone else have these sort of problems?
Appreciate the help, thanks!
Uninstalling the "lagfix" does not convert the file system back to rfs it is still in ext2, which is really antiquated btw, that is why you are getting the insufficient space error.
I'm pretty sure Super one click will un root you, it isn't an app, its a pc based program so you would plug your phone in via usb and unroot.
So how do you covert back? I UN did lag fix undid root undid ext tools but still have space problem.
I will try super oneclick. Was hoping to do through phone so could exchange today. The lag is really awful and making phone not able to unstall apps or save pictures wasnt good fix anyway :/.Curious as to why lag fix didn't work though.

that "lagfix" is super old. ext2 as compared to ext4 which is the current filesystem for "lagfix", that And the stock rom is pretty crappy also. and only goes up to android 2.2.
So think they would replace phone that is rooted if its in the O'Neil range of power problems?
