[Q] How to Re-Root a *Half* Rooted Captivate - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I seem to have a recurring problem with my root on the FireFly 2.8 rom, though it may have been present on Serendipity and I never noticed.
My problem is this: Before I flashed FireFly, I used Odin to revert to stock 2.1, master cleared, and then rooted using the One Click Galaxy S root, which worked fine. I was able to flash the rom using CWM and Titanium Backup as well as other apps that require root said they had proper permissions.
At some point, I do not know where, I lost my root. Now, when I try to use Titanium Backup or Firefly fixes, the app tells me Root access FAILED.
I have superuser as well as the current busybox. Can anyone help me with possibly telling me how to enable my root or how to reroot if necessary?
I have tried z4root but it never does anything anymore.
And when I try to use the One Click Root again I can not click "reinstall packages" because I am taken to CWM instead of regular recovery.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

You probably converted system to ext4. Go back into Recovery and go to the features of whatever kernel u are using and reapply root.
Sent from my Captivate running Continuum 4.0 with Onix 2.0.5.

I was neveraware you had to reroot after converting the system to EXT4. Worked like a charm though! Thanks for your help.

#1 in CWM "reinstall packages" is the 2nd option down! called "apply update.zip" (kinda makes sense doesnt it?)
#2 if you have CWM you can root without one click root.
boot to CWM recovery> Clockwork Features > root + install superuser
adv

Edit: Nevermind, looks like someone already solved your problem while I was typing my BS out.

You don't normally have to....

I has this same problem with FireFly 2.8. I never had that issue with older versions of FF. But, as mentioned, if you reapply root in CWM, it works again.
I love the FF themes, and stability, but I may go back to FF 2.6. FF 2.7 had charging death for me, and FF 2.8 I have issues with keep the lights on. That's how I found my root issue. Now, with the root fixed, keep the lights on seems to disable itself after a while. Definately after every reboot it turns back off. I never had this issue before with cog, perception, or any of the earlier FFs.

Your rom probably came with a kernel that implemented lagfix upon first boot. It happens if you manually apply lagfix as well and re-rooting in CWM works like a charm all the time.

All the FireFly versions I have used have the lagfix optional, and applied through CWM, but 2.8 is the first one that applying the lagfix affected the root of the ROM. I also didn't have this issue with Cognition or Perception, both of which apply the lagfix on first boot.
So the kernel is the issue, not the ROM? A different kernel may fix this?

Yes and no. losing root from converting system to ext4 or back to rfs, can happen with any kernel, and for the charge death that was the onix kernel in those versions. The keep the lights on, does that kernel have bln options in cwm? I use sp voodoo do idk.

i have never lost root converting my system
but i havent converted it in over a month. Just leave it EXT4 when i upgrade/change roms.
havent had any problems not converting it so i dont bother. (except going to stock)
but when i used to convert back and fourth every flash out of fear... NEVER LOST ROOT

I've only lost root converting on Continuum but never on FireFly or Apex so not sure if it is kernel or rom.

Yes FF 2.8 has bln options in CWM. I have issues with bln active or disabled (in FF 2.8). I have not tried managing the bln with the app from the market, would that make a difference (vs managing bln in CWM)?

[Q] Clockwork to back to JH7, kernel still Voodoo

Hey folks, so here's a basic summary of what I've done up to now...
Rooted... have Rom Manager, etc...
Flashed JH7 OTA with Clockwork. Worked nicely. Set some things up, happy at this stage so I made a backup.
Decided to try Cognition, was 2.1.4. Had some trouble with a few things.
Disabled lagfix, simple enough.
Flashed to a backup made when I was on regular JH7.
So to the question... when I go to About in Settings, my Kernel still says
[email protected] #Voodoo_lagfix_3.0_v1.9.
Shouldn't the Kernel have converted back when I restored/flashed my backup?
Clockwork won't reflash your kernel (unless it's a package with included kernel) however the voodoo kernel you currently have on your phone operates the same as a stock kernel until you remove the disable-lagfix folder. Cognition 2.1.4 does utilize that version of the kernel to enable init.d scripts for things like MobileAP to function

[APP] z4mod

If anybody here doesn't mind testing, could you check out the following thread and test the new z4mod app on your Vibrant? I only have an I9000, but the app (and lagfix) should work fine on the Vibrant as well. Let me know please!

Quote above from i9000 forum, but thought I should reply here since this is for Vibrant.
Same for me. I am on a Vibrant Running TW Obsidian V3.1, stock kernel. Uploading my kernel, patching & redownloading all seemed to work. Selected convert filesystem, the app said it was copying files, etc., and rebooted. App still says FS is RFS after reboot, and Quadrant score is the same. Maybe doesn't work with this ROM?
Also, I was surprised there was only an option for ext2. I thought the point of z4mod was to use ext4 or some other format. I apologize if I am mistaken. Thanks for all your hard work! OCLF app is great.

I was running it on stock rom so I'm betting it's strictly a coding issue. As for ext2 being the only option I believe it's b/c that is all the stock kernel supports. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Tested on stock 2.1 ji6, Error: Cannot patch kernel.
Worked perfectly on stock 2.1
Tested on TW 4.2 ULF with Eugene's A12 kernel... couldn't convert...
Tested on Eugene stock Froyo build and it works...
Worked like a charm Ryan! I had to root phone again due to a soft brick last and your Z4root got me rooted quick and easier than the previous method I used. Thanks!
Didn't work for me, on stock 2.1 (ji6). It would only reboot into recovery after patched kernel was applied.
Does it work with Froyo?
Also how different is it from the Universal Lagfix that team whiskey has?

Yes it works with Froyo. This is an app that patches the kernel, not an entire kernel replacement like the ULF. This is a bit less invasive because any future kernel changes from Samsung won't require a reflash. On the other hand, ULF has far more options (including formatting more than just /data and your choice of file systems -- although z4 has stated RyanZA will add these options in future releases)
I want to convert all of /System.
Thanks
Gave it a shot. Uploaded kernel, patched it, downloaded it, rebooted to flash kernel, but doesn't seem to flash it. Every time I reopen the app it wants to try flashing it again. Is it just a CWM .zip that I can flash manually, and if so where can I find it?
I'm running Macnut R12 with stock JK2 kernel.

That won't do anything as /system is read-only. The lag comes from writebacks.

[TECH DEMO] Gingerbread For Vibrant Build 1 (experimental)

READ EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EXPERIMENTAL! This is not a support or bug reporting thread!
EXPERIMENTAL! This is not a support or bug reporting thread!
Fixes and Extras:
- Dual Boot Support
- Added Swype
- Added sqlite3
- Added 3 Button Fix
- Added Ad Blocking
- Fixed the build.prop fingerprint so you can see all apps in the market
- Fixed root not working
- Fixed Busybox symlinks
Known Issues:
- GPS broken
- Home is back, back is home
- Camera
- Only mounts internal sdcard
- Data works, however it takes 2-5 minutes to connect after boot. Works fine after.
Important Things To Know:
1. This rom duel boots and operates off /data. You cannot boot into clockwork recovery. SO, in order to return to your previously installed rom, all you must do is reboot into download mode and flash your previous kernel. I will provide a link where you kind find a list of current 2.2 kernels in a .tar format so you can flash using odin via download mode.
2. On boot, you will see a white fuzzy screen for about 3 seconds, it will not effect anything so don't panic.
3. YOU MUST currently have voodoo enabled before flashing this rom!!!!!!! I suggest just download and flashing our stable 2.2 rom, nero v3 and enabling voodoo, then flash this.
4. Yes, this is ACTUALLY Gingerbread, not a clone.
Installation:
- Install like you would any other rom via clockwork recovery. BUT LIKE I SAID, if you want to return to your previously installed rom, all you must do is reboot into download mode and flash your previous kernel.

I would like to try this, since it's a release from TW, but I'm just wondering exactly how stable is this release.
As stated in very large red letters at the top, this is EXPERIMENTAL.
EXPERIMENTAL!!!!
Don't cry when you break something or when something doesn't work. This is a proof of concept release (IMO) AND WILL get better. Let people that know what they are doing play with this.
Great Work!
I was really surprised by just how fast this was, great job to everyone working on this! The CRT screen off feature is absolutely sick, the grainy youtube videos really don't do it justice!
ok now i have problem getting to download mode using either terminal emulator or the adb as now my phone dont get recognized by the pc........any suggestions masters??
edit:
got it back to nero v3 where i left it hehe...... i got to download mode by hardware key combos....terminal emulator and adb didnt worked in my case.....so those without hardware keys working dont try it........anyways my vibrant got to taste the gingerbread
@sombionix
do we have to delete anything on the phone after reflashing 2.2 kernel?? is it the folder named gingerbread inside the data partition? Im getting kernel panics after reverting to nero ...any thoughts??
Edit2....kernel pAnic dissapeared after couple of reboots
Sombionix, install.sh calls for sbl.bin in updates, but there isn't one there. Am I missing something?
I just replaced my device, so I'll probably wait a few days.....

I flashed earlier this morning and everything was safe. The only thing I saw was that sometimes I'd get hard resets (all the way back to the "Vibrant" screen). It would then come back up and I'd have to wait a couple of minutes before the data would come back. Again, as Som pointed out, it's not really a fully-functional thing at this point. It's completely safe to do, though, so long as you're familiar with Odin.
When you get sick of it, pull the battery and then put it back in. Hold both volume up and down and plug in the USB cord and BAM! You should be back in download mode to flash the kernel back to how it was before. I used the JL5 Voodoo modem.
Cool Demo, data worked right away for me. I had hard resets just like other posts have said, and will wait until the stable version. Thanks somb.

Once you flash a kernel via Odin your phone will reboot automatically back to your previously installed rom. No other flashing is required, although you can if you want.
Also, you don't have to disable voodoo if you are flashing another rom that has a voodoo kernel included. However, you must disable voodoo if you are flashing a rom with anon voodoo kernel.

Installing Continuum

You could always try flashing it without bootloaders and check it out. I have tried the other 2.3.3 ROMS out there and I find this one to be really smooth with very little issues. Battery is good, Rotation is great, Camera works good. If you have a Jig, you should not have any problems with ODIN.
When I went from CM7 to Continuum, I flashed back to Stock first just to be safe. Continuum V.5 RC2 is by far less buggy and smoother than CM7 in IMHO. I love it.

The process layed out in the first post for Continuum works perfectly, I wouldn't be worried about flashing the one with bootloaders, as long as you READ every step in detail first!
Using Heimdall in Linux to install Continuum
I'm ready to install Continuum v5, but would prefer to avoid Odin and Windows. I'm running Cognition 4.3.1 now; installing that was easy, just using CWM recovery.
Anyone know how to install Continuum using Heimdall? Also, how do I flash back to stock using Heimdall?
TIA.
Doesn't Continuum v5 have ext4 by default?
Someone on the main Continuum forum said that the ext4 file system does not come installed by default but it could be enabled using the ext4 app in the app drawer. This sounds ridiculous. To change file systems, you have to do the equivalent of reformatting the partition. In order to not lose all your data, you would have to back up, change the file system, then restore. I doubt very much you could do that with a phone app.
Am I wrong?
Yes you are wrong. The app boots the phone into recovery backs up, converts, restores, and then reboots. All from one button press in the app.
I have used on perception2 beta 1 and took minute rebooted then had nothing change and didn't backup then converted back to rfs and flash beta 2 and lost nothing

Do I need 3 button combo to install using odin 3 button?
My captivate does not have the 3 button combo, so I have no way to get into download mode on my own. I have never used the Odin 3 button, but am very familiar with Odin one click. Odin one click automatically puts my phone into download mode in order to finish flashing to stock. I am wanting to install continuum v5, and understand the instructions fully, but just wanted to make sure before I started, that I can successfully install using icezars instructions, without the need for 3 button combo. Can anyone confirm if this is possible, or if I need to install the 3 button combo fix that is floating around the forums? Thanks in advance for any help.
I currently have Continuum V4 and used have AIO Captivate Toolbox to install most roms.
First it's not called "odin 3 button" it's just odin 3.
You don't technically need the button combo to flash it but if something goes awry and you end up in s boot loop, or soft brick your only fix then would be a jig...
After you make it to gingerbread you will have a working combo ... The buttons will be different thats in the op of continuum 5 ...
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not sure where I came up with calling it that, and I've read plenty about Odin 3, but have still been a bit nervous when it comes to utilizing it. I am confident that I can follow directions well, and have read the instructions several times as well as many of the posts. I may have to order myself a jig just in case something does get messed up, but I'm antsy to get me some gingerbread love.
Again, thank you for the help.

[Q] CWM Nandroid Backup Fail? Busybox?

Finally got things up and running on CassieXL GB ROM. I did not feel secure on the ICS ROMS with the weird Kernel. I find it odd that all the active threads in development are for ICS or CM9 ROMS.
1. What GB ROM are stable and highly regarded? Cassie XL thread was closed after I flashed it!
So I wanted a good Nandroid. Powered off and started 5.0.27 CWM. Backup yields:
-messages about mounts?
-error while backing up boot image! SD Card space free xxxxx (there's plenty of space. I tried external as well as internal.
-/tmp/recovery.log copied to /sd or something
2. Cassie installed CWM Manager. Does that use the same recovery as vol up/home/power? Is CWM Manager app only compatible with certain kernels? Cassie installed Franco Kernel-9. CWM Manager v3.0 lists current kernel as CF-Root 5.0.
History:
New phone with GB
PC Odin LPY (felt unsafe... but really liked it), Su installer, CWM Installer
PC Odin CF Root Kernel
CWM flash Parnoid Android (Missed some Note things and my eyes hurt)
Triangle away
Flash Casie LC1 based ROM
That included superuser, but I ran an app that said I needed busybox so I used busy box free from the market (stericson) and the app works fine (Google Voice Full Integration). The busy box free app says symlinks applets will not be replaced in the free version? Busy box installer also states multiple versions available... fairly sure I used the default 1.20.0.
To be honest, I don't really understand what busybox actually does. But I know I need it and it's usually included in the kernel/ROM/
3. Did I create some kind of incompatibility between my busybox and rooted kernel? Titanium says: OK (BusyBox 1.18.4-Tatanium from app). Bottom Line: How do I make a nandroid?
4. Should I stick w/ Casie's inclued Franco Kernel-9? I've heard of a -10 version, but the development thread is way deep with a bunch of LPY ROMS!
5. While I'm at it, I'm not yet up to speed on modem options yet. Casie put me on LB2 when I flashed it. Seems to be working ok, but I have to toggle data sometimes.
Thanks for the help. I would like to make this a learning experience.

So you had gb stock. Did you make a backup of this before lpy.
I would flash a directly rootable gb rom see dr k thread.
Do that then install cassie xlr rom. Then flash franco ten yhats all you need.

Haven't the faintest idea why that happened, frankly. I think I would try to flash one of the pre-rooted Roms to go all the way back, like this:

CWM Manager is just a graphic interface for your CWM Recovery. Manager uses all the CWMR functions to carry out whatever you tell it to.
And it lists your kernel as CF-Root, because Franco is 100% compatible with CF-Root.

I used that rogue app Busybox Free to uninstall busybox. Took a long time.... removing a buncch of symlinks?
Nandroid is running now... so at least I'll have some good GB DATA.
