Fixes and Extras:
- Dual Boot Support
- Added Swype
- Added sqlite3
- Added 3 Button Fix
- Added Ad Blocking
- Fixed the build.prop fingerprint so you can see all apps in the market
- Fixed root not working
- Fixed Busybox symlinks
Known Issues:
- GPS broken
- Home is back, back is home
- Camera
- Only mounts internal sdcard
- Data works, however it takes 2-5 minutes to connect after boot. Works fine after.
Important Things To Know:
1. This rom duel boots and operates off /data. You cannot boot into clockwork recovery. SO, in order to return to your previously installed rom, all you must do is reboot into download mode and flash your previous kernel. I will provide a link where you kind find a list of current 2.2 kernels in a .tar format so you can flash using odin via download mode.
2. On boot, you will see a white fuzzy screen for about 3 seconds, it will not effect anything so don't panic.
3. YOU MUST currently have voodoo enabled before flashing this rom!!!!!!! I suggest just download and flashing our stable 2.2 rom, nero v3 and enabling voodoo, then flash this.
4. Yes, this is ACTUALLY Gingerbread, not a clone.
Installation:
- Install like you would any other rom via clockwork recovery. BUT LIKE I SAID, if you want to return to your previously installed rom, all you must do is reboot into download mode and flash your previous kernel.

I would like to try this, since it's a release from TW, but I'm just wondering exactly how stable is this release.
As stated in very large red letters at the top, this is EXPERIMENTAL.
EXPERIMENTAL!!!!
Don't cry when you break something or when something doesn't work. This is a proof of concept release (IMO) AND WILL get better. Let people that know what they are doing play with this.
Great Work!
I was really surprised by just how fast this was, great job to everyone working on this! The CRT screen off feature is absolutely sick, the grainy youtube videos really don't do it justice!
ok now i have problem getting to download mode using either terminal emulator or the adb as now my phone dont get recognized by the pc........any suggestions masters??
edit:
got it back to nero v3 where i left it hehe...... i got to download mode by hardware key combos....terminal emulator and adb didnt worked in my case.....so those without hardware keys working dont try it........anyways my vibrant got to taste the gingerbread
@sombionix
do we have to delete anything on the phone after reflashing 2.2 kernel?? is it the folder named gingerbread inside the data partition? Im getting kernel panics after reverting to nero ...any thoughts??
Edit2....kernel pAnic dissapeared after couple of reboots
Sombionix, install.sh calls for sbl.bin in updates, but there isn't one there. Am I missing something?
I just replaced my device, so I'll probably wait a few days.....
TW - Thanks for making this a reality!

I flashed earlier this morning and everything was safe. The only thing I saw was that sometimes I'd get hard resets (all the way back to the "Vibrant" screen). It would then come back up and I'd have to wait a couple of minutes before the data would come back. Again, as Som pointed out, it's not really a fully-functional thing at this point. It's completely safe to do, though, so long as you're familiar with Odin.
When you get sick of it, pull the battery and then put it back in. Hold both volume up and down and plug in the USB cord and BAM! You should be back in download mode to flash the kernel back to how it was before. I used the JL5 Voodoo modem.
Cool Demo, data worked right away for me. I had hard resets just like other posts have said, and will wait until the stable version. Thanks somb.
Ok did you guys got kernel panics after returning to 2.2 rom....i have got 4 th panic about 5 mins ago too...

Yep. After you flash your kernel though Odin, you're back to normal. Flash away.
Edit: The only thing us that you'll want to disable Voodoo before flashing a new rom, just in case.

Once you flash a kernel via Odin your phone will reboot automatically back to your previously installed rom. No other flashing is required, although you can if you want.
Also, you don't have to disable voodoo if you are flashing another rom that has a voodoo kernel included. However, you must disable voodoo if you are flashing a rom with anon voodoo kernel.

No, you don't want to flash an sbl file. I forgot to remove that file. It won't effect anything.

Hello again, going on my 4th new thread tonight (please no comments, Let's just say im starting to like phones ) Well anyways I wanted to max out my phone with an overclock kernal but I would rather find one that's compatible rather than brick my new phone. Could anyone suggest one? I tried searching the forums for a compatible kernal with no luck. Thanks
What rom are you running?

Glitterballs will work with that. You will want to download voltage app. I think it is in the op
Where exactly is it? I'm pretty much a noob and the only files i've downloaded and installed are .zips, so if you could explain that would be awesome.
What kernel does darkeys user?
Download sgs kernel flasher from market
Kernel

Voltage app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=473124&d=1293301548
To be safe disable lagfix
Download kernel
Open sgs kernel flasher
Click on choose kernel
Select ......
Navigate to your download folder
Select kernel
Select flash kernel
After boot, kernel will be updated
Go into recovery
Advanced ulk options
Lagfix
Enable all ext 4
Go back
Tweaks
Click on all options except last
Go back
Reboot system
Select back up and restore
When booted up download voltage app
Kernel comes pre set to 1.2 ghz oc
I got until the recovery menu when I couldn't find the advanced ULK thing all I could find is Advanced and i couldn't find lagfix. I pressed something like fix permissions and then it fixed permissions. I rebooted into a screen that had Galaxy S I9000 with samsung at the bottom. Then a robotic lady voice said something long that i didnt catch and then it rebooted into that screen again and this time i listened and it said restore operation and rebooted so i took out the battery and it just keeps doing that. Please help!!!!!
Let it do it. Let it load. Voodoo is enabling. I was wrong about the lag fix on the kernel. Do not pull the battery again
It takes a couple of minutes. Man, I am sorry I have been using a different kernel and got crossed on what lag fix it has. I hope it loads, please in future do not panic and pull battery so quickly
Alright I'm sorry i just freaked when I couldn't even get into recovery mode. I let it sit but my dad is a senior member of the site and he tells me these stories of how people have new phones and they brick them out of the box, so when I heard that weird voice i flipped. How long does it usually take?
Couple of minutes. No more then ten
Ok It's been a long time and it's still just sitting there saying restore operation. At this point I don't care about the kernal, what can I do to get my phone back to normal or even factory reset???
Wait. Do you have allot of apps? It is converting all your data
As long as it is talking we are still moving along
Respond to my pm
No I just got this for christmas. I have ytt3r's version of Darky's ROM and as i was looking over it, I noticed all these little things like texts and there was ALOT of them.

FAQ
How to flash FireFly? (Method one)
BACK UP!!!
Flash to stock (FTS)
Wait for your phone to reboot and then re-enable debugging
Hook phone back up to pc and Master Clear (MC) using Odin
Load Clockwork update.zip (DOWNLOAD)
Load FireFly_X-X.zip to phone memory
Remove sim and external SD, and unplug USB
Boot into recovery and reinstall packages (You may have to reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork recovery)
Once in Clockwork recovery (Green Text), select install zip from SDcard
Next select choose zip from sdcard
Scroll down to FireFly_X-X.zip and select the file
This will run the script and install the ROM to your phone
After this is done, select go back and then select reboot phone
This may take a while, so leave your phone and go grab a snack!
How to flash FireFly? (Method two) - the one I usually do
Load ROM file onto phone
Boot into recovery
Select ROM and flash it
Reboot, wait and enjoy
Wash, rinse, repeat!

ok..lemme do the honors....quick ques...am flashing firefly 2.2(downloading it now)....i flashed back to stock JF6...do i need to flash to some base ROM for firefly 2.2 to work??
I'm asking cause i was on darky8.1, then flashed directly to 9.3b1 which resulted in incorrect orientation(i9000), then i read the instructions which expected me to flash to base(resurrection), then flash a captivate fix and then flash to 9.3b1...!!!!
You should be able to flash directly as long as you flash FF 2.2 full not the update package.

Nope, you can download the FF 2.2 from the site. LINK
Pick any one of the mirrors. This will get you FF2.2 with the clock in the status bar.
If you want to remove the clock, you can flash the no clock package.
EDIT: Spaz beat me to it. Thx Spaz.

I flash to FireFly 2.2 and its looks awesome + I've been looking for a ROM that had the fix for when I connect the AUX cable to the car radio I can talk to anyone on the phone and hear them on the car speakers... This ROM has that fix finally, I love it... no more Blutooth head sets. But I have a big issue and is that when I make my 3rd or 4th reboot my phone freeze on the "F" boot logo. It does that vibrating action once and then twice like when there's an error. I have flashed my phone before so many times and had no issues and I have been using all FireFly ROM's ever since It came to life. This 2.2 ROM I have flashed like 4 times and I keep having the same problem and I don't want to flash any other ROM only but this one. What can be the reason for this problem? Please Help!

Did apply any themes?

Not sure! but the only one I can think of would be "Launcher Pro", but I have always used it, and this problem has never happened. When you install it, you need to reboot again in order for Launcher to take effect. I do need to point out that before this flash I when to stock with Odin. I never have the need to do this cause I use too flash directly from "Rom Manager" but lately I was noticing that when I flash using ROM Manager It wasn't taking me to the green menu, it was taking me to what I think it was the stock menu with blue, yellow and a red letters where red was an error message,so that's why I decided to go to stock and then I did all the steps needed in order to flash a New ROM using the thread from the development section then I flash FF 2.2 and ever since when I boot like for the third or fourth time it freezes. I hope for a solution... I'm only digging FireFly right now cause lets face it...
Thanks a lot for your attention...
Several Questions
I've been using Firefly since it came out and upgraded to 2.2 last week. I do have a couple questions after having used 2.2 for awhile.
1. Why were the dark apps removed (gmail & market)? It seems like Firefly has a darker theme and using the modified apps as default makes sense. Maybe a CWM zip containing all the dark apps would be an option or links to the forum pages? I was able to find dark versions of Gmail, Voice, Gtalk, and the Market by searching, but I think it would make more sense from a theming sense for these to be included by default.
2. What's the best way to remove the Samsung Apps? I flashed the zip and messed around with it a bit, but realized I don't need it. You can't uninstall it like normal apps so I was thinking about removing it with TiBu, but I don't want to mess something up. Suggestions?
3. I searched around the forums, but I haven't been able to find a simple answer to this: does this rom support call recording? Is this a kernel issue or simply a rom feature that Firefly hasn't implemented? If this is something simple to do without losing theming, I have no problem with that, if not consider this a feature request.
4. Not sure if this is a Firefly issue or an ESPN issue, but since flashing 2.2 my ScoreCenter app keeps reverting to the user Tron98001. I don't know who this is or how it got on my phone, but it keeps changing all my settings. Everytime I delete the app and wipe the data, it defaults to that same user when I install it again. If I change the user and settings, within about a day it reverts back. Again, I'm thinking this is an ESPN issue, but I was just wondering if anybody was having the same issue since I didn't have a problem until upgrading to 2.2.
You can always try different modems, to see which one works best for you.

1. There were too many bugs involved with the dark apps. I decided that it is best to include stock and let users decide based on their preference.
2. I will have to create a CWM zip that takes care of this. It is not as simple as uninstalling.
3. This ROM does not have call recording. It is considered illegal in many states, to record calls without consent of the other part. I just want to stay away from the mess. Users can install that option on their own.
4. That definitely looks like an app issue.
I believe my ROM is more toward the neutral side and I dont wont to force themed apps (that are buggy) or features that can get them in trouble.
I am just being honest.
Let me know if there are more questions.
As FF is rogers based, can it support usb audio out through the car dock? I downloaded the rogers car dock app and no joy. Changed the kernel to FB2, which should have the fix, and still no joy.
Thanks for the amazing rom though!

I did run into this problem when I flashed Fire Fly 2.2. The only way around it was to uninstall Launcher Pro and then install it again. I am not sure what caused the problem but this did solve it for me. The one downside of this is that all the screen setups that I had got removed. But that is minor to me since I move things around all the time any way.

That fix is still in the works in Xcal's kernel. We will have to wait till it is implemented all around.
Thanks for your quick response. I'll wait for the CWM zip to remove the Samsung Apps. I understand the legallity of call recording and it is something I just wanted to try out, anyways I have a follow up question then: if I apply the phone.apk and libs I found (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938860) would I lose the theming of the dialer that comes with Firefly by default? Do you know of any reason why this wouldn't work?

SO, earlier today Supercurio put together something special for those of us in Canada on the i896- a stock Rogers Froyo kernel with voodoo injected into it. Following logic, those of us on the stock Rogers Froyo should be able to have our cake and eat it too: a kernel modified especially from Froyo, intended for the Captivate, with voodoo lagfix but without the need to reflash an i9000modem or kernel. Here are the files:
Kernel: stock Rogers Froyo i896 w/ voodoo injection
Modem: Stock Rogers I896 UXJL1 Modem
Before trying a flash, I unlagfixed and backed up via Titanium Backup.
First I tried the kernel flash. I knew it wouldn't work with the modem, but I flashed it first to make sure there were no issues.
Rebooted into recovery- RED SCREEN
I did not enable the lagfix at this point. Just a straight reboot.
Regular boot screen; Rogers logo; Samsung Splash screen- then everything goes black. The home key buttons will light up and never go out if pressed. The phone stays like this until I pull the battery(I waited 25 min before I gave up).
I have tried various configurations regarding flash order(kernel/modem), I have repartitioned the card, factory reset before starting, everything I can think of, but this kernel won't boot past the splash screen.
However, when I revert to SpeedMod kernel(k13c) everything goes back to normal.
I would have thought I could flash this stock kernel over the i-9000 based kernel with the lagfix on both without issue, clearly I am wrong.
Can anyone see anything in my process that is inherently wrong, or even better would some other brave soul with stock Rogers Froyo be willing to try a flash? I wouldn't bother if this is your first crack at it though.
Thanks in advance to all who can help out.
So after wiping all caches and factory resetting, I get the following message at my Red Recovery screen:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
(File Exists)
Is this important?

I get that all the time. No idea what the hell it is and have had to manually select my GSM bands when I flash a new rom or wipe dalvik cache since it started. Other then that no problems seem to be caused by it, for me.
Call off the dogs- after I installed the driver package that was included with Odin 1-Click I managed to get a master clear and a flash to the AT&T stock.
I must have spent 3 hours installing different driver packages today.
A shame it didnt work out smoothly. I'd be interested but am far too new to risk the troubleshooting..

Well, I have some very good news. This little kernel seems to be pretty special. After getting myself back to Rogers Froyo, I have done a few tests. I am getting very solid Linpack scores of 15-16 mflops and Quadrant Standard scores of 1400-1500. Using CPU benchmark, we have scores of about 725 ms @ 1000 hz and 700 ms @ 550 hz.
These scores are very solid and are about 20-25% improvement over stock Rogers Froyo Kernel.
This is promising as the kernel is a native Captivate kernel and could do a better job of servicing the many Froyo ROMs out there in terms of simplicity and stability.
The stock modem still needs more testing in terms of gps fixes and accuracy and data speeds.
I'll get back to you about those shortly.
If you have thought about staying on Rogers Froyo, this would be a good start for improvement.

I would highly recommend this Kernel!! All the above benefits, plus fantastic battery life. The stock modem seems fine, although I've had better data transfer speeds and GPS locks from JL1 kernel, but this stock modem is perfectly fine.
Would love to see anyone else's results as well!
I like what I see so far. I am getting 1575 scores on quadrant (I know it doesn't mean much) but overall lag is gone.
I was a little freaked out this morning as the Rogers network was dead here this morning and I thought maybe I had done something with all this to kill cell / data. But everything cleared up after a few hours and I was back to normal.
Outcast, were you able to flash this custom Kernel without the issues that Clemmie came across? Much like phrenicthenub, I'd love to see the performance increase without the current bugs of custom ROMs, but I don't think I'm competent enough to troubleshoot if it all goes to hell.
As long as you disable any lagfixes and return any O/C or U/V kernels to normal you won't have these issues. Everything should work fine.

Did you guys do the 3e recovery fix first before being able to install CWM?
Hi guys... So i was trying to get SpeedMod to work with a i9000 modem like JK4, but my bluetooth is always noisy...
Right now, i have:
Latest SpeedMod kernel with LagFix enabled
JK4 Modem flashed.
What do i have to do to get this Rogers Supercirio's Voodoo kernel and modem ?
Thanks.
Elisha, I just took the plunge and got these flashed. Definately do the e3 recovery fix before setting up clockwork or anything else. That was the one part that gave me any trouble, but as soon as I got that sorted, everything went very well.
I'll try to pay attention to how things seem to perform and post my findings. Thanks for the encouragement again, Clemmie.

First you will need to boot into recovery and disable your lagfix. Back everything up with Titanium Backup. Download the files above to your root folder and reboot into recovery again. Using cwm, use the install zips option and flash both the kernel and the modem. Reboot yet again into recovery, clear your caches, then enable the new lagfix in your cwm options. It will take a while to convert your partitions from rfs to ext4, so be patient.

Thanks Clemmie,
I disabled LagFix from cwm and the speedmod kernel, rebooted, flashed modem with original JL1 modem, and then reflashed kernel with stock rogers froyo. backed everything up with Titanium backup. So i am currently back to stock, with a backup.
cwm is not in my recovery menu now, so if i use ODIN to flash the .tar version of supercurio's stock+voodoo kernel, does it contain cwm ?
ODIN with this kernel should work and then enable lagfix on first reboot by converting to ext4 right ?
Thanks alot, i am just starting with all this and want to make sure i understand everything before i take the plunge.
Thanks.

Thanks ! i'll try that a little later... i'll let you know how it goes...
Well, so far, this Kernel seems to be the best thing to ever happen. I consistently get a score of 1501 in Quadrant standard (not from a fresh boot or anything, and running beautiful widgets and things, so I don't know if that makes a difference. I know with most benchmarks you're meant to close as much as possible, etc) and things just seem to be nice and smooth overall. On top of that, the battery life is, all of a sudden, seemingly PHENOMENAL! All whilst using the stock ROM. Either one of those benefits alone would have made the flash worth it. This is the way this thing should have run from the beginning.
I'll test out how well the GPS works, and try to pay attention to my signal strength with WIFI and calls and report back.
Thanks I figured as much as I had to do the 3e fix after I accidentally upgraded to the official Rogers Froyo the first day I got the phone.

Ok, so i have used the tar version with ODIN3 v1.52 to flash stock+Voodoo-Froyo-I896-UXJL1. As i said, i was on stock kernel with stock JL1 modem.
Flash went great, took about 5 seconds, then rebooted. First reboot took about 7 or 8 minutes with a robot voice telling me the different steps it was in...
Everything workd without hickups... This kernel works realy well and speed is definitely there !
Thanks for the help guys...
I am already on CM7. Everything is fine, but I would like to flash Continuum. I already have 2.3.3 (and presumably the bootloaders). My question is: Exactly what method should I use to install? I try to avoid ODIN if I can help it. It gives me panic attacks. Lol

Just read over the op for C5. if you already have the 2.3 boot loaders you only need to flash the no boot version in recovery. The instructions in the op are very detailed.

You could always try flashing it without bootloaders and check it out. I have tried the other 2.3.3 ROMS out there and I find this one to be really smooth with very little issues. Battery is good, Rotation is great, Camera works good. If you have a Jig, you should not have any problems with ODIN.
When I went from CM7 to Continuum, I flashed back to Stock first just to be safe. Continuum V.5 RC2 is by far less buggy and smoother than CM7 in IMHO. I love it.

Flash w/o bootloaders and you lose recovery. Then you have to use odin to go back to stock.

The process layed out in the first post for Continuum works perfectly, I wouldn't be worried about flashing the one with bootloaders, as long as you READ every step in detail first!
Using Heimdall in Linux to install Continuum
I'm ready to install Continuum v5, but would prefer to avoid Odin and Windows. I'm running Cognition 4.3.1 now; installing that was easy, just using CWM recovery.
Anyone know how to install Continuum using Heimdall? Also, how do I flash back to stock using Heimdall?
TIA.
Doesn't Continuum v5 have ext4 by default?
Someone on the main Continuum forum said that the ext4 file system does not come installed by default but it could be enabled using the ext4 app in the app drawer. This sounds ridiculous. To change file systems, you have to do the equivalent of reformatting the partition. In order to not lose all your data, you would have to back up, change the file system, then restore. I doubt very much you could do that with a phone app.
Am I wrong?
Yes you are wrong. The app boots the phone into recovery backs up, converts, restores, and then reboots. All from one button press in the app.
I have used on perception2 beta 1 and took minute rebooted then had nothing change and didn't backup then converted back to rfs and flash beta 2 and lost nothing

Do I need 3 button combo to install using odin 3 button?
My captivate does not have the 3 button combo, so I have no way to get into download mode on my own. I have never used the Odin 3 button, but am very familiar with Odin one click. Odin one click automatically puts my phone into download mode in order to finish flashing to stock. I am wanting to install continuum v5, and understand the instructions fully, but just wanted to make sure before I started, that I can successfully install using icezars instructions, without the need for 3 button combo. Can anyone confirm if this is possible, or if I need to install the 3 button combo fix that is floating around the forums? Thanks in advance for any help.
I currently have Continuum V4 and used have AIO Captivate Toolbox to install most roms.
First it's not called "odin 3 button" it's just odin 3.
You don't technically need the button combo to flash it but if something goes awry and you end up in s boot loop, or soft brick your only fix then would be a jig...
After you make it to gingerbread you will have a working combo ... The buttons will be different thats in the op of continuum 5 ...
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not sure where I came up with calling it that, and I've read plenty about Odin 3, but have still been a bit nervous when it comes to utilizing it. I am confident that I can follow directions well, and have read the instructions several times as well as many of the posts. I may have to order myself a jig just in case something does get messed up, but I'm antsy to get me some gingerbread love.
Again, thank you for the help.
Okay first of all, I would like to apologize if this is being posted in the wrong forum, or if I am upsetting anybody by posting this. I have searched all over for a couple days trying to figure this out. This is my last resort, and I'm hoping you guys can help. All of your time and understanding is much appreciated!
So a little background. About a week ago, I rooted my AT&T Captivate 2.2(build number 1012 if that helps) using Superoneclick, and then flashed CM7.1 using clockworkmod. I was not satisfied with CM7.1(terrible battery for me, other various reasons). I then downloaded MIUI (not sure which version, the one available on the premium version of clockworkmod) and flashed it using clockworkmod. This started with the cm bootscreen, and then went to an MIUI bootscreen that played a little tune. The miui screen looped, and it would not go past this.
After rebooting and running into the same thing, I went to f\attempt to find a solution. I thought I backed up my rom, but it had been erased (issue with the external sd I think). I used an odin one click I found on here, but this odin one click brought me back to eclair 2.1, instead of 2.2. Up until now, I could get into both download and recovery mode using the three button method, and now I can't. I am not sure what to do exactly. I have read about getting it into download mode using adb, but I'm not sure if that would work in my situation, and I'm not too educated on adb or android sdk. I stayed up almost all night last night, and now have researched most of today, not making much progress.
Thanks again for your time!
Just to clarify have you used all button methods in order to try to get into download mode. Seems as though flashing bootloaders may have f'ed up you combos. I have a couple suggestions. I'll edit my post as I find the urls to post for you
Stock GB ROM you should be using -- http://www.mediafire.com/?05nemq5yyn5fuqf, this one has bootloaders, but preferably you should use stock odin roms that don't mess with the BL's (after this of course, since yours are messed up right now).
Now of course this depends upon you getting into download mode. If you can use ROMmanager (btw, I don't recommend you download your roms from rommanager, as that will not always be the most up to date and may not be the one for you) to get into recovery mode, then from there go to advanced then reboot download. However some kernels do not support this. Try the cable methods before trying this method.
First of all, I appreciate your help Mikel.canovas. I have used all the button methods. I can no longer get into recovery or download. (Romtoolbox enables me to get into recovery(2E), but not download). I now have root access, but am not able to sideload apps, and apparently rommanager free isn't available on the market. I did buy rommanager premium, but unfortunately now that I basically reset my phone, it doesn't show up as bought (known issue, apparently not resolved?), and even after I bought it again, it says I need the free version to even use the premium version.
Should I go through the process to be able to sideload apps? Or will romtoolbox do the trick? Rom toolbox gives me the option to install a rom from my sd card. Should I use that, and select the GB ROM you provided? I'm not sure I understood exactly how you want me to get that GB ROM onto my phone.
What I want to eventually have is either MIUI or rom fasty on my phone. If possible, could you give me some steps on how to reach that goal?
Thanks again for your time. Eclair on the captivate is not pleasant, especially since I had a taste of CM.
Well first off I highly recommend Mosaic over CM or Fasty, solely because of performance and battery life. However that is all subjective.
Ah since you're rom is sending to 2E recovery, you're not rooted with cwm. You need to flash another kernel that supports this. Afterwards, If you can get into CWM, I recommend putting CM onto your sdcard and flashing from there. After booting into CM hold down the power button, press reboot, choose reboot download. See if that works. If not, does adb reboot download work for you? If not again, I recommend trying another USB port, reinstalling drivers, trying different button combos. I've had issues getting into download mode in the past and, trust me, it is VERY frustrating.
Well first of all, before you back into flashing stuff, don't flash to stock unless you have done everything possible with the tools on your phone. I'm assuming you gave it at least 5 minutes to boot up, as the first boot can variably take longer. You could go into recovery and wipe stuff, or you could have gone back to CM7. A flash to stock is probably never necessary in the situation you reported.
Anyway, if you can get into recovery, maybe try getting a kernel that allows you to reboot into download from recovery. Although that will depends on what kernel you are on right now, as I know speedmod kernel has that option, but you would need to get to download to flash that.
And as another poster wrote, have you tried all button combinations?

Or download SGS Kernel Flasher from the market. You can then flash kernels with the app. without having to go into download mode. Very handy.
Once again guys, thank you for your time. A little more information:
Kernel:
2.6.29

Baseband:

Let me know if you need any other information.
I am able to get into download mode using the terminal emulator in rom tool box. (The free version of rom manager is no longer on the market)
I was hoping one of you could give me a step by step of what I need to do, with links to downloads.
And yes, I have tried all off the three button methods. Also, I probably should have researched more before I flashed back to stock.

Oh, and miui won't really give you better battery life than CM7. It basically is CM7 with a different UI. I loved CM7 a ton, so if you are having issues with it, let me know! With the right kernel and other settings, battery life is pretty decent, as long as you charge nightly.

What is the build number of your phone? It's located under your battery, looks something like 10.06,10.07, 10.08 and so on
Alright, thank you, I will be checking back tomorrow.
Eventually what I want is to have the working 3 button combos again for both download and recovery mode, and either the miui, mosaic or rom fasty on my phone.
Easy flash GB BL's and you won't have to worry about 3 button problems!
If you didnt do a Master Clear, now would be the time. Make sure you back up anything you want to keep. MC will erase EVERYTHING on your internal SD
Remove your Micro SD, and your SIM
Download:
OneClick Root
SideLoadWonderMachine This also has CWM, 3ButtonFix and ROM Manager in the zip
Make sure you have Debugging enabled
Connect to your PC
Run One Click Root, and follow the instructions, reboot
Run Sideload Wonder Machine and direct it to install ROM Manager
Copy the update.zip(CWM) and 3Button Fix to your phone
Open ROM manager and "reboot to recovery"
You'll go thru the boot twice to get to CWM
In CWM install the 3 Button Fix
I usually pop out the battery and check it before I put the ROM in.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! DO NOT TRY TO USE THE 3ButtonFix while you have a GB ROM installed you WILL brick your phone. It only works on 2.1, and 2.2 ROM's
using this one click package I now am able to manually enter download and recovery :

The only reason I asked about the build # is because the 10.08's were pretty commonly known to have 3 button issues. Also, anything above 1012 and using Odin1 Click could soft brick. I was just checking as I was offering info

Yep. Because these are Odin or Heimdall One Clicks.
You can't just flash to a GB firmware/rom from Eclair/Froyo without using Odin or Heimdall to at least get the Gb Bootloaders. You cannot just go through CWM recovery unless u already have the GB Bootloaders.
Of course u can get it all through mini Kies, the official GB 2.3.5 KK4 update that is.
