Hi and good morning.
So i had successfully rooted my nook at the start of this year, had it all setup with my apps, etc.. and well i also had a ton of apps for my 4 yr old on there. She was using the hell out of it and last night i looked over at her and i noticed that the Nook was rebooting. I didnt think much of it but then i saw it booting back up to the original OS, not the screens I have gotten familiar with seeing. Im not 100% sure, but im 99% sure that somehow she navigated to the settings of the NOOk and selected "Erase & Deregister Device". Ugh, im crushed.
But just wanted to check a few things before i root again:
1. I have to imagine it is okay to root again, correct?
2. What software could i have been using to have a nice little backup of the items that i had been using? Is there any you are using?
3. My next step will also be find an app that only allows certain programs to be open by my daughter.
I guess I should maybe take advantage of it being set back to the original today and go over to B&N and read for free for the hour..
Thanks --- Aaron
Hi there
1. Yes
2. I use either appmonster or titanium backup. Which if you like it is worth paying for paid version. That way if you have to do a restore you don't have to constantly click install.
3. Anyone have an idea about this one?

3. Try using a separate launcher for your daughter. i.e. Use Zeam/ADW/LP for your home screen, then use one of the others for your daughter. You can setup her screens the way you want and "hide" the settings icon as well. You wouldn't be able to have a default launcher but it would give you the ability to limit what your daughter can and can't use.
Thanks for the quick replies on this, much appreciated!

Good for the launcher but it returns in the apps. My biggest issue with it is when I'm typing I accidentally hit it constantly when I'm trying to REALLY type in landscape mode. Very annoying and frustrating.
They way they handle the softkeys and toolbar in Customized Nookie Froyo rocks

I used autoneuter and am running zeam launcher. I was pretty pissed the ipad had a switch for disabling screen rotation ( not anymore apparently) and wished there was some way to do it on my nook when laying down in bed reading.
I was messing with the screen and i found out touching the wifi/battery/clock area at the bottom right of the screen opens up Quick settings which has "wifi, mute, oreitnation, and brightness"!
I may be really slow but I was SUPER happy about this and wanted to share incase anyone else missed it.
I am not sure if this is part of autoneuter, zeam, or softkeys ( installed by autoneuter) but thought I'd share for those of you who don't know about it.
It's part of the stock B&N software.

As stated above its part of the B&N framework. Its actually a great setup except for its location. I love the notifications being a popup instead of a drag down.
BTW, there's a bunch of ways to get this same setting. In fact Extended Controls Widget has an orientation lock toggle that will handle that in one click if you want.
I can't find extended controls in the market... i've been using it on my Aria and wanted to use it for my nook too...?

They are not. The native B&N ebook reader can hide it and go completely fullscreen. We just need to find out how it is done.
EDIT: I have searched B&N developer documentation for some API how to enable/disable bottom system bar and found only following message
Note NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ do not support true full screen mode. The bottom system bar always displays. Therefore, the NOOK "n" key is the home button and not the back key since the system bar contains a back key that always displays.

This means it will be either unsupported hack or the documentation is wrong. At least the "back key that always displays" part is not true. I've seen the bar without back button
Additionally it appears that both home launcher and ebook reader can also add search box to the bottom system bar so it is not ordinary android system bar (or is it?). OTOH when media player is playing the design of system bar is same as stock ICS (black bar with dots in usual places).

I'm sure it can be modified, but are you sure you want to? It can be painful to have to "home" for every "back". Anyway, it will have to be a hack in /system, which means recompiling, putting in the /data/su directory and symlinking, and hoping it doesn't bork the system!
Part of the reason I got the nook hd is that you get the whole screen while reading. It is quite annoying to have the bar but in every android device I've used, you don't get the full screen. But the Nook HD screen is 16:10 so in landscape movies are ok as 16:9 is the typical encoding.

I can confirm this app does work. But you need the paid version. Status bar hiding only works in the paid version. And I had trouble with the multitouch gestures, so I switched it to phone mode instead of tablet and single finger geatures were enabled. And that made it work well. And nothing apparently was written to /system to cause a reset.

The GMD gesture control works fine. Only drawback is that every time I use it to hide the bar it also removes the wallpaper from both stock and apex launchers.
Also, just found that Asphalt 7 from play store, that normally crashed before loading, plays fine with the bar hidden.
You loose the wallpaper because the way that GMD uses to hide the bar is kill the SystemUI service.
I used that method before on my Touchpad and it did work, but it is a little nasty.
Since CM10 you can hide the bar (Expanded Desktop) so it is a better alternative than GMD.
I use an app called Hide Bottom Bar. Much easier to activate than GMD. You can activate it from the notification panel or via widget. Also it doesn't kill your wallpaper. And you can access a soft key pop up with a one finger swipe from the bottom similar to Button Savior but without a persistent visible toggle. Very convenient. Only drawback is that it is not free.
I tested all previously recommended possibilities. No one suits for my needs. But ... i used TSF Shell launcher and TSF MIUI theme for starting theming phone my way. TSF Shell have possibilities to hide all stuff, that you get blank screen. I dont tested it yet on Nook but i will do this on next week.
Actually i have not ended my Nook HD+ theming (based on original Nook HD+ theme), running on CM10 and CM10.1. I hope i have time to end it this week and post it here too.

I just gave this a try. Found that unfortunately it does kill the wallpaper when I tried it.
Is there a way to add a "Home" soft key to the navigation bar (as in CM or standard Android navigation bars)?
Use Handy Soft Keys instead
Handy Soft Keys: It is a free app using which you will get navigation bar at any convenient position along the edges of the screen by drag and drop.
I have had a savage hatred for Google's idea of softkeys (while loving Button Saviour's) ever since HC dropped on us with the Xoom. Is this method of getting rid of the navigation bar viable on the Nook HD? I read from the guides that the Nook was "sensitive" but am too dumb to know what this means.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1985592
Currently on 2.0.5 rooted with GApps but no location.
Do not try. Will do 8 boot, restore. Seems most anything related to /system will cause this.
Despite this limitation I still hate the Nexus 7 enough to stick with the NookHD
I have the same/similar problem with the grey toolbar. I have used LeapinLar's excellent guide for getting CWM on the nook and it works very well indeed. The only problem is that when running BSplayer/Moboplayer/Mxplayer etc the nook home grey bar doesn't disappear when playing a video.
The grey bar does go black but the screen doesn't expand to make use of the extra space that the stock nook video player uses. Is there a setting that makes the grey bar slide away like on the stock video player? If one player can do it hopefully the other player can be made to do the same, but I can't find a setting that allow this?
Cheers

There is no setting to do what you want. And the bar turning black with tiny white dots is called "lights out" mode. It is to fool you into thinking it is gone. It is a "feature".
They only way to get the bar to disappear is with third party software like "GMD gesture control". That particular one is a paid software.

You can try a free application called "full!screen" to hide the gray toolbar.
This should work with any CM10. I wrote it for my TouchPad and it also works on my HD2
ToggleBarCM10.apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1555097&d=1355245239
full!screen needs access to system tools. Will this result in me never being able to let the tablet die for want of battery or rebooting? GMD GestureControl also requests the access to "modify system settings".
I'm fine with never turning it off but I am wondering if there are other ways that the 8loop bootloop can occur. I mostly use the Nook for satisfying an 18 year old habit of reading TIME magazine so I would prefer to be on stock rather than switch back and forth.
It really is weird...I can't eat cereal without reading last week's news on TIME
Man, I messed up that edit!
I will repeat.
It is ok to change system settings, just not /system. System settings is in /data.
Neither GMD or full!screen change /system.
Earlier I found full!screen did not work, but now it does.
Oh, it is a new version, that's is why it works now... and I just rebooted and no issues. It is awesome.
Sent from my BNTV400 using Tapatalk
CM10 already contains the code to switch the bar on and off, it is call expanded desktop.
It is usually accessed through the power menu but some builds don't have that option enabled, still the "logic" (finishAnimationLw()) inside the android.policy.jar is always there and can be "activated" using a simple setting on the system database.
Not sure about the "new" fullscreen app, but the way GMD used to hide the bar was killing the systemui service.
"ToggleBarCM10.apk" just updates the setting db switching the value on and off, it doesn't do anything else. It's not going to affect /system.
I've been doing that for quite a long time on the TouchPad and other devices with CM9 and CM10.
Search for "No way to hide the bottom bar in CM9" and you will would find the thread in Rootzwiki with a lot of more info about it

** Disclaimer 2: I don't own a Verizon G2, so while I know my tweaks work on AT&T and I made the same ones against Verizon framework files for these, I currently have no guarantee they work. **
Description:
I like my screen real-estate. Going from S4 -> G2 I was sad that despite the larger screen, I had *less* real estate because of the on-screen soft keys.
I know a lot of you use GMB Hide Soft Keys and it is a great app, however, I personally prefer to have an always-on, always-available set of navigation keys.
Enter this mod. It shrinks the nav bar down considerably, increasing screen real estate.

1. Turn device off by holding power key down until bootloop stops.
2. Hold power, down volume and where the home key would be.
3. choose yes factory reset, should take you back to recovery....

I know for a fact that this will not work on T-Mobile directly, the same tweak will, but it would have to be T-Mobile's file version.
You should be able to garner ADB access from the LG splash boot screen by holding Vol Down on boot, it won't go into recovery but it will lock up on the LG logo and should be recognized by your comp, at least it worked for me during testing.
Get a T-Mobile owner to send you framework-res.apk from /system/framework and replace yours and you should be good to go.

It shouldn't affect quick reply in any way. It is a relatively simple and unintrusive tweak, affecting a separate class file than what is involved with quick reply.
I don't know enough about how GMD works, but I know it is still quasi-beta and people can sometimes have weird interactions with untested UIs.
Cheers.
