Here is an extremely well made teardown of the Galaxy S i9000; the two images show the names of every single chip on the board. May be useful for future developments, so I'm posting it here.
EDIT:
As quadratic pointed out, this is the european version. I thought that the EU version had a different GPS chip, but it doesn't. Please mods move this thread to the i9000 dev area.

4g antenna? Actual working FFC... Hmm
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
That information would have me believe that the infineon radio in my Vibrant according to those specs is capable of 14.4 instead of the advertised 7.2Mbps. Inconceivable!

This is not a Vibrant, it's the international Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000. The Vibrant is the SGH-T959. The hardware is mostly the same, but there are differences.
In any case, all Galaxy S phones (including the Vibrant) use the same GPS receiver, so I'm not sure what you were trying to say.
This is true, however the linked article actually mentions the "Vibrant" specifically. That may be where the confusion (if any) has set in.

Hey guys,
what do you think, is it possible to port the Android 2.3 Gingerbread from Nexus S to our Samsung Galaxy S. Because it has a similar hardware!
/Discuss
You're fast , just wanted to ask this. Hope some legend dude will do this.
Theoretically it should be very simple to port the software. The only difference I can see from a hardware perspective is the NFC chip which simply needs to be disabled in software, and the missing search button which will need to be mapped to a menu long-press.
I did some work on the NITDroid project back when I had an N900, and neither of these is particularly difficult to do.
For nexus S info:

will the iNAND be a problem?
Supercurio says the devices use different types of memory.
Might be a bit of a problem
i can't see any reason we will have issues bringing it to the galaxy s line, especially if its the same SoC... and hardware, gps might be different, but thats a huge bonus anyways

yea the Nexus use the 16gb iNAND...
Since Samsung closely helped Google at making the hardware, hopefully we might have a quick 2.3 Samsung version for our devices
Which will then be easier to bring down to stock with the Cyanogen team progress
It must be far easier than a sense port or even cyanogen port.

One thing that also caught my eye was, that the video recording isn't HD... probably to not throw away boatloads of RAM for the camera...

I wouldn't bet on that. If Sammy released 2.3 in short order for the SGS it would cannibalize Nexus S sales. The aftermarket community is still the best bet.

GPS is the same! Both using A-GPS Chips. The NFC Software must be Disabled, Bluethooth Updated to 3.0, Nexus S has only 2.1 and Video Recording Updated to 1280x720, Nexus S had 720x480

This a premature thread. Once a dump or aosp is released only then can we begin to do something about it. Till then this is a discussion thread and not related to development. IMHO
What about rfs? Im sure google is not using it. We will have to work that out as well.
2.3 SDK is out so I see no problem in getting gingerbread.
Whether as a port from the NS or a homebrew I don't really care.
All I want is the integrated SIP client. Been missing this since switching from my Nokia e90 Communicator to Android 1 year ago.
I am interested how the nexus S fares against a hacked Galaxy S, don't think it will be any faster!

Everything is virtually the same.
I call up one the powers of the all powerful XDA to port the N:S for all the SGS's that are out there, so we can forget about samsung roms and use a normal google one
The Nexus S doesn't seem to support an external sd card. Likely another problem?

I read in a forum that Samsung have stated that there will not be a 2.3.3 Update available for the Galaxy Tab P1010 (wifi only).
I do not know if that is true, the guys from the original thread have been given the same BS answers or a negative one from The Samsung Support from various locations.
Do any of you guys have any idea or have heard anything about this issue?
Thanks.
P.S. I am never buyng Samsung again.
Well the Wifi version is an inferior version of its 3G cousin dues to its lesser CPU/GPU. They are probably trying to get the update to work with those different parts.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/wifi-galaxy-tab-running-on-an-older-cpu-than-its-3g-siblings/
I guess that most of the P1010 users are familiar with that, but i do not think that is enough for Samsung to spare us this major upgrade.
It SHOULD not be. I agree with you.
I also posted over at the Galaxy Tab Forums for you as well.
Let us hope that Samsung sees the errors of its ways.
this news sucks
i bought the gt p1010 cause it is ideal for when it comes to school stuff
this news really saddens me

+1, I believe so, and they are on the DEV forum, but it looks like the roms are specific to the version of tab you got!!
So be very careful, the WIFI only tabs are "P1010" so make sure you the posts/external websites lnked on the forum of the ROM you are considering to ensure that it works on P1010.
As I almost started the install OVERCOME when I checked the external site, its states specifically not for WIfI Only.
But keep looking.
Good luck
I have a tab wifi -p1010 ,it was a present and it stays on dust because is no usefull.Samsung just wanted to sell to stupids people like us ,their interest are just money,so we will have no updates to gingerbread,honeycomb,etc...I saw in tab development a lot of custom ROM and i am sure that is possible to put in our ,,cheap tab,, a custom rom, but,as long our place is just in in Q&A section,as long we don.t talk with devs ,we will not succed.I am pretty sure that samsung sold a lot of wifi tab so, we should find a way that someone (devs/chefs) see us..
ANY SUGGESTION?

Yes. Buy yourself a proper tab. I will. And it will not be Samsung again.....
having search high and low there seems to be nothing for this tablet - ;o(
I do not understand why this can't be ported - it is on the same TI OMAP SOC that other gingerbread devices use.
See my technical question about this posted at this URL:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357414
It can be ported, but devs does't bother to do it. They prefer new shiny superduper tabs, our is packed with old HW.
Well shoot, lets offer them some kind of gift then. Since it should be a matter of removing cell modem and sim drivers, shouldn't be too much work right?
I am willing to kick up 20$ to the dev group for a CM7 or GB update. Any other P1010 owner's want to chip in to such a fund?
Any dev's interested in some holiday bucks?
I would throw in £10 for a gb/cm port
Sent from my R800i using XDA Premium App
I would throw in $10 for ics ported. About time for a bounty thread.
20 euro from my part for any custom rom with gingerbread
20$ at least from me. Wife bought this for me last year, feel bad cause I get hardly any use out of it now :/ would love to have some new life breathed into it.
U$S 30 from me. GB at least ! ! !....
Just curious, since the S6 and the S6 edge have their own sections on XDA, why doesn't the S6 Active have its own? It clearly is a separate model. Yeah, it has similar internals as the S6, but so does the S6 Edge, and it gets its own section. They even share root methods, while those don't work on the Active...
Definitely time to break this device out into a new section.
Agreed.
Getting frustrated finding root for this phone, I even declined OTA while on OE2, but after 3 times AT&T forced me to update to 0F3 and I'm afraid I'm stuck now.
Bones, package disabler in Google play store is your best bet currently. AoN
+1
Seriously, how do we get our own section? It really deserves its own
Waiting patiently
This is my first Samsung phone and I absolutely love it.Now just waiting for root access so I can truly personalize it.I don't have the knowledge to do this so I'm counting on the developers to come through and make this Thanks
From the Moderator
The reason that the S6 Active is in this forum is other than the outside being harder and the battery being bigger they are essentially the same phone inside. That means that you most likely can use the same custom software mods and roms made for this phone in the active.
In other words this is where it belongs ...... and that, is why the active is in this forum ... until the powers that be decide to change their decision
Regards, ~~~ oka1
Except that the active has an extra button, 3 physical rather than capacitive buttons, and no finger print scanner. Not the same phone, physically nor presumably from an electrical / software point of view.

Precisely. It has the same name, probably a ton of the same internals, but it's just as much the same phone as the S6 as the S6 is the same as the S6 edge. Different hardware and different software, different phone...
It will not get it's own forum because there is no, nor will there be any, development for it lol. Can't even get a stock firmware image! Sad fact...

Unfortunately the lack of a forum just leads to misinformation. People think, oh it's the same phone and think they can do the same things to it and brick their phone.
Additionally, just cause we can't develop things for it now doesn't mean we won't be able to in the future.
well, i asked. You saw the answer.
Both sides are correct. There are differences (not sure if there are any partition differences or not) that are present that could cause severe breakage on a user's device. But they would have to tie in another mod to watch yet another forum where people go to the s6 active area and flash stuff for the edge/s6 flat. So...it is what it is i suppose.
O RLY?
@oka1
You said that
you can use all the same custom software mods and roms made for this phone in the active

Can you please confirm a single ROM or root method that this is true for? Maybe I'm just bad at navigating these forums, but you claim that every single mod and ROM for the S6 works on the Active, and I can't find even one single ROM or root method for which that is true. Can you please double check your claim, and if you find yourself to have been truthful, provide an example as evidence?
Thanks!
It isn't true, you can't root the phone currently and can't use any custom roms etc.
Seems to me the mods know something the rest of the community doesn't. Like you know, no root ever etc. so why bother?
I'm not totally new to compiling CM for devices, as I compiled the sources for the Samsung i9100 and Motorola titan before. However starting development on a new device is a bit more challenging. Are there people who can help with starting this build? I already found this CM wiki page, but it kinda assumes you know what you're looking for when filling in the blanks. (or toe be more precise, know where to look in the locations for the required values)
It would also be nice to work together with someone who developed for a device before.

Since it comes with an Exynos 7 Octa 5433 chip it seems to be impossible at the moment. Samsung didn't release all the documentation of the chip. I hope someone will be able to get something going, even for the exynos 7420 on my Galaxy S6

Hmmm, this one is more difficult then the Exynos 5 in the T800? (cm12.1 is being build for that tablet) There also is an Optimalrom and a custom Kernel for this device... I'd think it should be possible.
I don't know if it is more difficult. The optimalrom is just a debloated and deodexed rom, still close to touchwiz. Cyanogenmod uses a whole other kind of building. Kernels are a bit modifies, but there is no heavy overclocking or undervolting possible yet.
Has anyone consulted the guys that worked on the Tab S version? They might be of some help.

The international Note 4 is the only other device with the Exynos that is in the S2
Look at teameos.org, they have their own builds for the note 4 exynos. Not cm12, but you may be able to find whatever missing pieces you need to work on it
