Aside from a new ROM and Radio, what else can be done to improve battery life? I thought this could be a new thread in which to summarise essential, obvious and often forgotten tweaks that help alongside ROM and Radio changes. This would be especially useful for newbies who are unsure about their new Diamond (such as myself recently).
Please contribute guys!

p.s. I have decided to keep my Diamond, even though I have the choice to buy an Omnia. It's a great phone made even greater by the thoughtful and kind people on here. A community like this is a great attribute to consider when buying a new phone imho.
-disable auto gprs attach. If you don't use push.
-disable auto brightness on screen.
-enable all the power management tools in Schaps Advanced config.
-turn off beam and bluetooth.
-turn off customer feedback and error reporting.

Are there any drawbacks to enabling all the power management features; what does they mostly do? I have looked and the acronyms mean little to me i'm afraid
Also, how do you turn off customer feedback and error reporting? Mine is already off due to Swift 6.0 anyway.
What is beam?

Yes, and inherit an incredibly chunky phone, thus taking away one of the main advantages of the Diamond - its sleekness.
Oh come on, its not that bad... only 3mm extra!
I saw a pic of it and I thought it made the phone look ridiculous. It may have been a misleading pic though...

That's a 3rd party version HTC has released their own which isn't a 1800mah like the one posted above it's 1340mah and shouldn't be as chunky.
The HTC version is here http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=166204 waiting for better side by side pics.
Yes, its a misleading pic cos thats the 1800mah battery ffs! That battery adds about 5/6mm to the Diamond, so yes, it is ridiculous but it is by no means the official one, which looks ok by comparison.
Fair enough. I look forward to seeing the 1340mah version then...
Side by side pics here:

Does nobody bother searching on here? Or reading the accessories section?
Clearly not!
Calm down ffs! I thought I had already seen a pic of the battery and so I didn't feel any need to search for more pics. Plus, as bizarre as it may sound, we don't all spend every day of our waking lives on here...
I will only say this once - this forum contains a lot of conflicting information mostly caused by people posting without searching or looking in the appropriate location first. And saying you 'thought' you had already seen a picture of the battery is utter bollocks as you were able to post a direct link to it, which presumably would have given you the opportunity to actually read it again and realise it wasn't the official one.
Erm, no mate. I saw a pic of what I thought was the extended battery via typing 'htc touch diamond extended battery' into google. I then recalled the pic due to this thread and so went to find it again. I didn't bother reading details about the battery as I thought there was only one kind of extended battery. I know, it's a sin eh? Definitely worth your snide remarks?
Why don't you just pipe down and stop trying to act like some sort of adjudicater, it's tiresome and is far worse than repeat threads.
I understand your reasoning, but you also need to understand that I (and many others)am still feeling my way around this site. If this bothers you, don't enagage.

All the more reason to search then
I am not by any means a self appointed adjudicator - I sympathise with the guys who do moderate this forum though.
Anyway, whatever, sorry if I was being 'snide' but was in a bad mood anyway - strangely enough it has improved considerably!
is this the offical htc extended battery? ive heard the others interfere with gps?? can someone confirm this?
Is it possible to focus on the battery tweaks again? I thougt it was a good idear!
One of my last hang ups on getting the Nexus 6 is how it will handle notifications. I know it will have Ambient Display, but from what I have been able to read, its not going to pulse like the Active Display of the normal Moto phones. Has anyone seen how the Nexus 6 will handle notifications yet?
This is exactly what I'm trying to find out, i keep checking all the unboxing and first hands on video and reviews
and they just keep talking about the size, specs and camera, i might have to pass on this nexus if it doesn't pulse in some form, i just can always keep picking up my phone check for a message.
Yep. If it doesn't pulse or blink or something, it will be a poor choice. Knowing you have a notification from across the room or in a dark room, is one of the things I like about 95% of Android phones.
The last phone I had without an LED light was the GS2, and I had to use other means.
It seems like such a simple request for anyone with the phone to check as well. Every unboxing and first impressions video I have watched (far too many) have all said that "it has moto x like notifications and that's a good thing" but every time they show the settings it doesn't indicate that it pulses or breathes. I was hoping that DL would have answered this question when they got their test units, but even they haven't yet.
I'm pretty sure Google knows it's silly to send a visible notification only once. I'm confident they've incorporated some form of pulse or renotification of some kind. Fingers crossed
In any case if it is or not just remember this. ITS A SOFTWARE FEATURE.
I mean come on guys, we are XDA. If its not perfect I am sure one or some of us here will be able to modify the feature to allow whatever we want. The feature is baked into 5.0 android now and is Open, all we have to do is work on a expanded settings system to customize it if it already does not have one. Hell if Xposed gets properly ported to ART we can surely see a module for it!
Stop acting like its the end of the world if it does/doesn't have the exact feature of software design as the Moto X. Its a software feature and if demand needs it I am sure we will find a way to make it happen. Have faith in XDA and the Developers.

Its definitely not the end of the world. I'm not being dramatic and condemning the phone if it doesn't have it. Just looking for an answer to what I hope Google realizes is a basic need. I've been rooting and roming since the OG Droid days here so I know what XDA can do, I just don't believe this is a feature that I should need to rely on the Devs here to create.
First of all, it's something you can turn off. So if it doesn't work the way you want it to you don't have to use it.
Google is also pushing Android Wear which makes anything like Moto Display (ie Active Display) pointless cause you can see it on your wrist faster anyway.

The battery on the G watch is really great actually.
And if you don't want Android wear, don't buy it. But that's where Google is going so some features that used to be present on phones that aren't as necessary now will potentially be removed.
Ambient display on N6 works similar to Moto X. It will pulse when the notification arrives. After that it will pulse every few minutes, in an adaptive time period - the longer you don't pick it up, the period between pulses will increase.
And of course custom rom's will be able to tweak this, I hope.

Seems very unreliable, he had to try multiple times. Also why is pick up to activate so unreliable?
I really wish they'd copied the Moto version and added the sensors.
this seems like it will just nuke the battery in comparison to an LED.... I may end up just leaving this off.
won't this turn on constantly in a pocket as well?
Had a n6 with half purple screen and had it exchanged.
This new one is horrible ..
It seems to get really warm compared to the other and when it does, boy does it lag. Just typing this out, it's lagging.
I also noticed that my Bluetooth has "silence" spots while listening to music. Every 2-3 minutes, it will stop for a split second like it can't buffer, even if the music is on the device.
Another thing that may just be me, it seems the keyboard doesn't predict as well, like it's not even touching the keys I'm swiping.
Lastly, half the screen is white and half is a really yellow color. Very irritated by this device. Makes me want to throw it against a wall.
Your first problem can be resolved by using a custom kernel that does not use mpdecision. Mpdecision is known to be power inefficient and sends your CPU to be sitting in wasteful frequencies causing your phone to generate additional heat. My phone became really warm with mpdecision on.
Secondly, I don't use bluetooth so I can't comment.
Third. That isn't a N6 problem, its a problem with the software of the keyboard application that you're using. SwiftKey works great for me.
Fourth, can't really comment on that. My screen looks good, your phone should be uniformly the same color, you can try changing RGB and see if it would do anything. I recommend turning off adaptive brightness.
Good suggestions I suppose.
Only problem with those, I'm not gonna root or use a custom kernel. The last n6 only had a faulty screen and no other problems. That one didn't need any custom root activities.

If you don't root, or use ROM's then why post about it on a developer forum? I'm not trying to be rude just wondering why here. If it has more issue call moto and have them send a new one. My RMA phone is fine 0 issues so far and I'm happy with it.
This is a user forum as well as a developer forum.
I'm posting here to show there is problems with these phones.
Why does it matter to you?
If you are having those problems on stock, and don't want to root/etc, then your only option is to return it again. Pretty simple.
If you are looking for confirmation that your experience isn't 'normal' on the stock phone, I can confirm it is not.

I'm not trying to argue at all I was just curious. I would have the phone replaced if you want to gave those issues fixed without modifying the phone. Best of luck with the issues because it's not fun when you can't fix them.

I scratch my head also. XDA is a developer's forum. There are tons of other sites more suitable to those not wanting to root/ROM it up.
Sounds good. Let's discuss dbrand skins and the such.
I doubt this has anything to do with memory leaks or anything that's been discussed on lollipop.
I'd say you have a faulty SOC and I would replace it. My wife had similar issues on an S5 where it would stutter and fall behind almost and get warm. The icing on the cake was while taking video, normal 1080p video, and it would drop frames like crazy. Maybe 22fps or so was al, it was getting.
I actually agree with 20degrees on this one... There are tons of non development/customization threads on here, and XDA has a pretty knowledgeable user base so it is a convenient one stop shop for info.
People just need to ignore/keep their comments to themselves in the Q&A and general sections if they have nothing constructive to add to the topic of the thread.
So the Galaxy S7 has now been announced, and one of the new features is a clock which is always displayed on the screen. Obviously, this would be possible with our phone too as it has the same OLED display. Does anyone know of an app that does this, or could anyone make a simple one like it?
Source: http://www.theverge.com/2016/2/21/1...y-s7-edge-smartphone-announced-specs-mwc-2016

Try out this app DynamicNotifications. Available on PlayStore. Does work like S7. The only issue is it drains battery quite a lot. Probably coz digitiser is always on. It would be good if someone could turn off the digitiser. Coz I am pretty that's the reason for battery drain. After all both S7 and S6 use same S-AMOLED.
I am currently having a battery drain of 3%/30mins (WiFi on). I think rather than an app, we need a custom kernel.
Try out these two apps.
Glance and Off Clock. Very similar functions, it doesn't consume a great deal of battery life.

not quite the same thing. the wave thing was anyways there by default. what we need is a true 'always on' display app. we need a kernel actually. no way to turn off digitiser.

Sadly the app is so good that I have decided to keep it anyways. Lol. And the fact it doesn't mess up with the lock screen makes it even better. Unlike NoLED your phone could be locked and you'd still have DynamicNotifications running.

What do you mean? Both of those applications support always on clock, with Glance supporting notifications. It's minimal battery consumption, the only downside is that with "Off Clock", you have to first open the app than lock the screen then press the home button to activate it, but other than that it works the same way, just without the customisations.

The clock moving randomly was only added in the most recent version, if you can find the previous version, the clock will stay in the same place.
I'm on the hunt, kept being brought to websites that I didn't think I could trust. You're welcome to try and find the order version. I think it's 2.2 unless the developer went from 1.0 to 2.3

just wait for the S7 ports and you probably will get most of these features.

You can get same thing at cost of battery, anyone can get same thing at cost of battery(more on ips), but both G5 and S7 has an auxiliary processor which are very low powered and can only handle to show clock, these are very helpful, as main processor is very powerful and will consume lot of power even at lower Frequency. So basically you cannot port the hardware. You can do at cost of battery

Actually S6 too has low powered CPUs. And plus it has AMOLED. So you can pretty much make it work for S6 with minimal effect on battery as long as the digitiser is off.

Literally you could've been like "wow, so many ways to do something on this phone thanks for one more tool in my tool box".
Nevermind checking the extensive manual that answers a lot of these questions. Let's not pretend this is hard info to find. It's the phone doing what it was designed to do, not some broken feature you need to troubleshoot.
I keep forgetting this is XDA, it's easier to ask for the answer right in front of you as opposed to learning how to answer the questions yourself.
I'll report back to my support group and tell them mission accomplished. Someone learned something new.
Knowing is half the battle!
...
If you pick up your phone with your hand over the proximity sensor (top of phone), you will get this pop-up. I turned the setting off and it went away but the screen did unintentionally come on while in a pocket. Therefore, it appears best to leave it on and ignore the message.
Can a mod delete pcriz's comments and androidwarriors responses after the question was answered. I think this topic was a valid question.
Samsung has switched up a lot for the better but the downside is they moved it all around. We are stuck in such a monotonous get to point A to point B environment these days the answer was right in front of his face but he couldn't see it because he was too used to the tools he always uses. I am still learning little things about this phone as I go too. I think his question was valid, seeing as Samsung experience is still quite new, Samsung experience is such a huge improvement over TouchWiz, the note9 is loaded to the gills with features and nuances and Samsung (and other OEMs including Google) having features that have trained us to a certain mindset for years. Coming back to the note line after a hiatus hasn't been overwhelming for me but I can see where coming to the note would be like a longtime Android user switching to iOS or even vice versa. For me, still using my work iPhone is so underwhelming I can't figure stuff out and I am pretty savvy with tech. iOS users can find Android overwhelming. And listening to the apologies Apple users come up with now, compared to yesteryear, when many people are finding out iOS isn't as easy to use as has been claimed, it's just what they grew up on, kind of like learning a language. There is a lot to grasp by being immersed in the ecosystem, but more to find out by asking details and learning, learning that can be turned into a tool to find more stuff on your own. Dude obviously tried and put out one more flag up for something he might not have had control over and the response was douchebaggery at it's finest. I find the questions dumb when people are asking me how do I get such great battery life and how they can do it but are unwilling to take their phone off full brightness, theme it to take advantage of OLED's self emitting pixels and are stacked to the gills with social media and email accounts because they have to be that connected and are not willing to streamline portability. Finding the sweetspot for my notifications on the note9 was aggravating for the first time in years as there are many layers to it now. I had to experiment and read about other questions to figure it out. Settings are still taking some time to get used to with main settings, app settings and figuring out where the granular settings are when they're not in places or labeled to what we are accustomed to. To each his own but pcriz obviously overstepped the bounds for a valid question.
