I have a few etextbooks from B&N that only work on my laptop with the Nook Study app. I was curious if anyone knows of a work around to get them on my Nook Color? It seems that B&N is not allowing it at the moment. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
PS Adobe Digital Editions can also view them on my laptop
If they have adobe drm look for an ereader app that supports it. I think maybe aldiko or laputa do but I'm not sure. I can't recommend removing the drm protection and converting them to an epub to read in a regular ebook reader because that is wrong and probably a violation of the use agreement you agreed to.

This functionality will be available in Aldiko 2.0
not sure about Laputa (<------ I always lol en espanol at this name)
If you have Adobe Digital Editions running on your computer and you plug in your Nook it'll recognize it and register the device. You can also sign in with Aldiko with your Adobe username and use that.
Adobe Digital Editions also has an Android app out right now. It should be available in the Market. You could try installing that?

Google unveiled its eBook Store today and launched an Android app as part of the process. I'd love to try it, but can't find the APK file to load it on my CN. Can any of you provide a link. Thanks.
Its on the market, and its free. A simple ADB pull and push will do the trick..

Thanks. My only Android device is my rooted NC, so the Android Market won't work for me. Or am I missing something?
The only problem with the books app is it asks for your account when you open the app. I was able to get around it by installing it to my droid first and then restoring the apk and data with titanium. Still not synced to my account but i can search fine so far. Haven't tried downloading any books from it just yet.
EDIT: I couldn't manage to download or read any books on my nc.
Here ya go!
I installed but it doesn't work. Need to have a google account attach to it. I haven't figure out how to do that yet.
Figures. The NC hasn't been getting along with anything associated with google. That's been the case for me at least.
There is an app called WordPlayer that can access all the free books from Google Books.
Also, I tried a free book on it (I'm outside the USA) and it worked alright in the non-rooted web browser as well. Icons a bit small, not very responsive, but it works.
You can still get books from Google and sideload them onto the Nook. We all happen to have a pretty nice reader built into our devices.

I want to say we can DL the books as Epub and then open in the nook app? Based on the app/NC not being tied to the Goog cloud yet, i'll stick to my sideloaded books from the Gutenberg Project site.
Adobe Digital Edition will handle the epub books, yes.
http://books.google.com/help/ebooks/ereader.html
I used this last night: just went to google.com/books with the NC browser.. then when you find one you like theres a link to read on you device.

Any particular reason for using EPE54B when the nook claims to be ERD79?
Yes, EPE54B is newer, but the ERD79 might be more compatible. Or alternately EPE76 which would be the newest (pre-froyo) release?
Does the nook color read ebooks that are downloaded from other sites?

yes.. once it's rooted you can install the kindle app, and many other ebook reading apps.. so no they don't have to be from b&n

... Not true!
The Nook is open source so you can download any Epub book and read it on the nook. These can be from google books, nook app, moobi, etc. Also in the off chance thats not enough you can edit kindle books to read on the nook... Either or you got tons of options beyond just B&N store books
BE WARNED THOUGH...
you loose features loading a non B&N book, these include...
Cant be put on the home screen.
Is a hassle to get cover art (if possible, I couldnt get it to sync, but I also didnt try hard)
You cant share. with other people
You cant use the twitter/facebook fuctions
All other features should work if its an Epub
Awesome! Im going back to college and would like a tablet for my text books instead of carrying around heavy books. This sounds perfect. Thanks.

The Nook doesn't seem to handle large PDF files well if that is what your schoolbooks are. I conveted most of mine to epub using Calibre last semester to put them on my ipod touch, but it is something to be aware of.

How well does converting PDFs with pictures or a lot of symbols (science texts) to epub work? I would imagine that a lot of science textbooks would convert pretty poorly to epub because the pictures would get messed up?
Also, the non-OCR'd scans -- do they just convert as full page images in epub?

What about his statement was not true? You CAN put kindle on it once your rooted(I know I have done it)
Most of the time you don't even have to root, the default B&N reader uses Adobe DRM epub/pdf and most unsecured formats.... But imo 7" screens sucks for textbooks, most of them just aren't laid out for it.

The statement is true, I will admit that... But in realative terms of the topic IE can in then you reply with "yes via X" it has no baring on the actual subject matter
do the honeycomb roms still retain the original eReader apps that came with the nook? Like the library and whatnot?
No.

Crap... so is the nook app on the market the same thing?
The Nook for Android app on the market is basically the same except I believe it doesn't have the magazines and newspaper part.
Nook app same thing as stock reader?

[strikethru/]Not really. It only reads BN ePubs. Also, I'm having no luck getting Nook.apk to recognize any non-BN ePubs. Is this common for others? [/]
edit: MNMichael is correct. I figured out a while ago how to sideload other books; forgot to update post. Thanks for pointing it out.
Is there any way to dual boot honeycomb and the stock nook rom? Honeycomb doesn't work too well from my class 4 SD card, so I was considering this. I don't really want to lose all the B&N features of the nook.
I guess the other option is to boot a stock from from an SD card.

Not so. Other than the loss of magazines and newspapers, you can still sideload other publications.

I actually like the reader for Android better than the stock Nook reader.
You'll also lose the read in store ability, and no more free books, at least not from B&N.
Hey guys,
Do you know where could I download the Nook app? Im currently living in the Netherlands and its not appearing on my market
Looks like we not have a real use for the stock Nook Reader app much longer.
According to this the new tablet app can be used to read magazines.

I haven't had a chance to check this out yet on CM7 as I'm at work and my NC is at home. Anyone try it yet? Does it even see the NC running CM7 as a tablet and give us the right version?
Ive been using it since last night and it is freaking awesome. Do yourself a favor and dl ASAP.
I downloaded it and so far it's a little clunky. At first it didn't see any of my books, but then they showed up. Then I ordered the free trial of Maxim, but I don't see the magazine anywhere. Maybe it just takes a little getting used to but so far it's bugging me.
I couldn't find anything in the press release on gizmodo (but I scanned pretty quickly)... will it play read-to-me children's books?
My Analog subscription magazine now shows up on my C7 Nook App! Woohoo.
Time to re-subscribe!

Sweet.
Does it have the word lookup feature? Having a dictionary at my fingertips was awesome with the stock reader.
Is there a way to side load ebooks to the nook app?
For me the Nook Reader is very sluggish in the menus & I can only se my B&N downloaded books & mags. Nothing shows in My files & I have sideloaded several books. Quite a few FC, so I don't know what to think. I like the page turn animation a lot. Great feedback that the page was turned. MAybe I need to try to reinstall??

book title and page number at top of page annoying, anyone know how can to get back to 2.5?

Using CM7.02 on NC...
Update: Market Enabler did the trick. Had to "be" in the US. Can't buy anything though, seems you have to have an US-creditcard as well. Workaround for this?
What's a good, cheap, e-reader that will meet this need?
I already have these books in .pdf and .epub format ready to be uploaded onto something so I can start reading them.
Something that will allow me to replace the rom so I won't have restrictions (I don't plan on using Amazon's service, etc...).

I use Cool Reader. It's free and I like it better than all the other e-reader apps that I've tried. Not sure if it's in the Amazon Appstore though, you may have to sideload it.

Nexus 7
try Aldiko :good:
I second the Cool Reader option. Lot's of customization and reads practically everything! If it only had cross-device bookmarks (read on my phone at lunch at work and my KFHD at home)!
Moon+ Reader works good, has autoscrool and can sync reading position via Drdpbox.

Cool Reader
I am very happy with Cool Reader. It seems not to be present on Amazon market, so I searched the apk and sideloaded it via Dropbox. It works beautifully-BTW; I downloaded the "cr3-0-45-07.apk".
